Dies ist kein politisches Plakat! [Karl]

“It is not going to be a political speech,” said a senior foreign policy adviser, who spoke to reporters on background.*

Obama Berlin Poster

The German flyers bear Obama’s campaign logo and say “Paid for by Obama for America.”

It’s the advisor’s way of suggesting–and it’s probably a good idea, considering–that what happens in Germany stays in Germany. I wish the advisor had thought of that before inviting a million people and a lot of reporters (with notable exceptions) along for the non-political chat over tea and streudel.

Not a political speech? That’s laughable. Almost as laughable as McCain’s insistence on no timelines, even useful ones that show the Anbar Awakening and the Shiite ceasefire preceding the Surge. For a guy running as strong on foreign policy McCain sure doesn’t seem to have much more than a superficial understanding about what’s happening in Iraq, especially in those border regions with Pakistan.

I am pretty sure he knows Pakistan and India don’t get along.

  3. Dan Collins says:

    Iraq’s border regions with Pakistan?

  4. JD says:

That is not the Pakistan that jon knew.

  5. TheGeezer says:

Egad, my German bones get all tingly looking at the poster

    – wait –

my right arm is rising of its own

    – I’m struggling to get up from my chair and my legs are weak –

    MEIN FUEHRER! I CAN VALK!

  6. Carin says:

I definitely think the Germans are gonna vote for the O!

  7. JD says:

It is not going to be a political speech. We can safely call this advisor a douchebag and a liar. Yet another advisor that will be thrown under the back of the bus, shortly.

  8. jon says:

Iraq has a border with Pakistan on the same alternative-earth where the US has 57 states. Note to self: next time I’m getting an atlas, avoid the “McCain Publishing” and “Obamabook” brands.

  9. geoffb says:

    From The Politico
“At a morning background briefing, reporters parried with senior advisers on the characterization of Obama’s speech Thursday in Berlin as a campaign rally. The outdoor speech at the Victory Column could draw thousands of people, similar to the size of Obama events in the United States.

“It is not going to be a political speech,” said a senior foreign policy adviser, who spoke to reporters on background. “When the president of the United States goes and gives a speech, it is not a political speech or a political rally.

“But he is not president of the United States,” a reporter reminded the adviser.

“He is going to talk about the issues as an individual … not as a candidate, but as an individual, as a senator,” the adviser added.”

  10. happyfeet says:

It’s win-win. If Baracky becomes pezzydent, the Germans will feel they have a stake in his pezzydency. If he loses, he’s poisoned the well for McCain. This is patriotism.

    Where’s his mustache? snark/off

  12. great banana says:

will he be delivering his speech in German? Or will he embarrass himself and America by speaking English. I seem to recall a major politician lecturing americans on how requiring immigrants to learn english was unimportant, but it embarrassed us all when an American went to a foriegn country and did not speak the langauage.

Does anyone remember what politician that was who lectured America about that?

  15. geoffb says:

I think that Obama’s people “feel” that he is already Predident. Gore and Kerry gave off that same vib after they were nominated, Obama has it going earlier. When he is not elected they will crash hard and say “Once more with feeling” that they were robbed again.

  16. SarahW says:

    That is one scary-ass poster…

I feel all, like, velcro to shotguns.

  17. SarahW says:

Maybe that didn’t sound right. But I’m clinging bitterly to something democratic, whiskey and sexy and not violent at all.

  18. geoffb says:

    President not Predident, ack.

  19. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

That’s the actual poster, not a parody?

Did they hire Leni Riefenstahl as a design consultant or somethin’?

  20. serr8d says:

Seems that the Germans should know better.

Mikey .. no kidding … my first thought was ‘Seig O!’

  23. […] ~*~Seems that they should know better. crossed from home […]

  24. jdm says:

will he be delivering his speech in German?

Only the part where he mentions the Jews… oh, my mistake, Zionism.

I wonder if he’ll recreate the JFK flub about being a Berliner. It didn’t seem to hurt JFK.

  25. Chris Klein says:

I will not be plakated !

  26. jdm says:

Oh, and Karl? I believe it’s “Diese” not “Dies” if Plakat were feminine. I also believe that poster is “das Plakat” which would make it “das ist nicht ein politisches Plakat”.

    Sorry, sorry, sorry… I couldn’t help myself.

  27. psycho... says:

The white text on that red and black stripe there is a reference to Ghostbusters.

    Ceci n’est pas un fasciste.

  29. Karl says:

#1: jon, I explained why your timeline is not viable yesterday. Start with the following link, but particularly note the underlying material (esp. at Mudville) that we were giving military support to the Awakening both before and during the surge:

    https://proteinwisdom.com/?p=12965

#26: jdm – blame Google Translate. Or America for my lack of German fluency, like O!

  30. afall says:

I remember “Viva Bush” signs. The foreign language thing don’t seem so bad. Would we prefer that senate money be used for this speech or campaign money?

  31. jdm says:

Or America for my lack of German fluency, like O!

    Heh. Good one.

  32. Mr. Pink says:

Well this gives Hugo Chavez free reign to come here and pose with Democrats when he is campaigning for reelection.

Obama’s set up has become tiresome.

Watch what happens. His trousers have fallen down!

    And now we must vote.

  35. Jack Klompus says:

Is Chris Matthews going to attend the speech and report on the Triumph of the Thrill?

  36. Mr. Pink says:

That poster without the words reminds me of the murals Saddam Hussien puts up at his palaces. All of them have rainbows behind his head and sunlight beaming down on him. Also everyone else is shorter than him in the murals and is looking up at him.

  37. Topsecretk9 says:

I’m still trying to figure out why the graphic designers keep using the image of Obama looking really, really confused is a good thing.

  44. JD says:

  45. alppuccino says:

    A reprise of sorts:

How do you solve a problem like Obama?
On any issue can you pin him down?
How do you find a word that means Obama?
    Commander-in-Chief? Maliki’s best bud? Brown?

  46. JD says:

Brown? Are you fucking kidding me? Brown?! Good Allah, your racism knows no bounds.

  47. twolaneflash says:

John F. Kennedy called the Germans “weiners” when he attempted to speak the native language in Berlin: “Ich bin ein Berliner!”, Berliner being a German tube-steak. Probably got him killed.

  58. MayBee says:

Imagine Ahmadenijad making a similar poster just before he leaves for his no-preconditions meeting with Obama.

I know I am a dead-horse beater, here. But Obama is making so much of his overseas trip, yet he is the one that has tried to pretend other world leaders meeting with POTUS is no big deal. Not a prize. Surely he now realizes the value of such propaganda.

  59. happyfeet says:

Is Baracky expecting smurfs to come or something?

  60. DJ says:

OK, I just have to do this. As a native German speaker I can say the title should be “Dies ist kein politisches Plakat” and a “Berliner” is a North German expression for a jelly-filled donut, called a “Krapfen” in Bavaria.
    Can I be President, now?

  61. alppuccino says:

I know I am a dead-horse beater, here. But Obama is making so much of his overseas trip, yet he is the one that has tried to pretend other world leaders meeting with POTUS is no big deal. Not a prize. Surely he now realizes the value of such propaganda.

As I’ve said before, MayBee, this pure genius. Why is it not getting more traction? Perhaps if you set it to music?

  62. Clint says:

Set it to music, MayBee, but don’t have any of those dancers in the background. That would just further the oppression of women, especially if they’re hot black women.

  63. alppuccino says:

this “is” pure genius. Too late.

  64. maggie katzen says:

well, I for one applaud Karl for not outsourcing this job to someone overseas just as Obama would want.

  65. alppuccino says:

    May I?

    There’s a place for us.
    Somewhere a place for us.
    Hugo, me and Ahmadinijad,
    Peace, by God, is there.

    There’s a time for us,
Some day a time for us,
Sticks and carrots and friendly talk,
Hold your nukes and we’ll take a walk

  66. Sdferr says:

MayBee on your 58, Obama is pulling the same stunt with regard to the Surge, ie. we need a surge into Afghanistan right now, but the surge into Iraq was useless and wasteful of soldiers lives.

  67. RTO Trainer says:

“Almost as laughable as McCain’s insistence on no timelines, even useful ones that show the Anbar Awakening and the Shiite ceasefire preceding the Surge.”

Given the usage, I don’t think you know what “timeline” means in this discussion. In addition, the term has been “timetable.”
