The Ugly Truth About the Media [Dan Collins]

Bitter about Hillary’s continuance of the race against Barack, media types in the tank lash out by managing to find a NASCAR fan who’s a moron:

While the case for Hillary Clinton to stay in the race is shakier than ever, one ugly reason for staying in could be found Tuesday amid the ruddy, sun-kissed Hoosiers who cheered her on to victory at the Indianapolis Speedway.

With Clinton posing alongside pioneering Indy speedster Sarah Fisher, there were almost no African-Americans to be seen. Many in the white, working-class crowd were simply not ready to back Barack Obama – for reasons that are disturbing.

“I’m kind of still up in the air between McCain and Hillary,” said Jason Jenkins, 32, who cited information from a hoax e-mail as a reason to spurn Obama.

“I’ll be honest with you. Barack scares the hell out of me,”he said. “He swore on the Koran.”

Obama did manage to pull in many white voters, but still encountered similar sentiments from a man who refused to shake his hand at a diner in Greenwood, Ind.

“I can’t stand him,” the man said. “He’s a Muslim. He’s not even pro-American as far as I’m concerned.”

The implication being that Hillary backers are misinformed racist crackers specifically and haters generally.  The pursuit of anecdotes in the service of the narrative: it’s amazing what these jackasses will cling to.

Reminiscent of this.

Dan, it’s fun and funny to laugh and point at stupid white (redneck) voters. Doing the same with black voters, though, is just mean. And racist.

  2. joe buz says:

Carin, I agree. white voting for a white candidate is racist. minority voting for a minority candidate is not only fine but expected.

  3. Salt Lick says:

    “He’s a Muslim. He’s not even pro-American as far as I’m concerned.”

The mainstream media would be lucky to match this fellow’s 50% accuracy. I gotta wonder, though, whether black NASCAR attendance would improve if cops beat up the winner at the end.

Nothing the matter with pointing out a Hoosier acting like a Hoosier. ;-)

  6. Jeff says:

Are the Dems sure there is enough white guilt left over to join the “racist” african american vote in November and win it for Obama ? I certainly don’t feel any significant guilt about slavery and especially I would feel not guilt about not voting for Obama who is not the ancestor of a slave, who has been given scholarships by the truckload partially because of his skin color (yes, he was a bright student), who made over a million dollars last year. Seem like he has done ok for himself, “despite” being half-african.

  7. Dan Collins says:

    “Halfrican,” please, Jeff.

  8. Lisa says:

Wait, I thought it was rich white latte sippers voting for Obama…while the real Americans were voting for Clinton.

    Hmmm.

    I am confused.

  9. nishizonoshinji says:

well…some empathy here…it’s like fighting the moronic dimwits who persist in their endless and illformed crusade to replace ToE with IDT. they really ARE neanderthal biblethumpers.

and ppl that fall for internet hoaxes ARE probably racist crackers. And 40-percenters too.

    Too credulous, Dan.

Time-filling tics like “I’ll be honest with you” and “as far as I’m concerned” — note that each character gets one — are more likely to show up in fake quotes than in real ones.

    Real people lack verisimilitude.

  11. Lisa says:

    6. I disagree. I give white people a bit more credit. I think they like Obama because they think he is a better candidate for POTUS. Not because they think they “owe the negroes one”. Plus, according to the Clinton campaign, the Democratic Party is rife with misogynists (I would have to agree since people keep talking about being so annoyed with her that they want to “punch her in the face” when they hear her talk).

  12. Pablo says:

Point of clarification – Obama is a descendant of slave owners but not of slaves.

  13. sashal says:

Lisa, I am white, I do not think I owe Obama anything or to any black American.
I just think he is a better candidate then Clinton..

Dan: Welcome to MY world. The world where the news guys go out to the scene of an incident and find the black person with:

1.The LEAST amount of front teeth.
2.The most dirty and nappy-headed children in tow (with bonus coverage of them hopping up and down in the background happily screaming obscenities).
3.The shakiest grasp on the English language.

Hey nishi, I thought you said you secular types weren’t concerned with a candidates church based beliefs. And yet you seem to be choking on someone. Is it Wright or Hagee?

  16. JD says:

I agree in general, but watching MSNBC’s coverage yesterday I couldn’t count the number of times the pundits said “How can she take this away from an African American man…?”
Mike Barnicle, in railing against Rush Limbaugh, said Rush was missing a really great story: that an African American man, who two years ago would have had trouble getting a taxi in Chicago, is about to get his party’s nomination. As if the story of overcoming prejudice in this society is SOO great, even Rush Limbaugh should get behind him.

  19. JD says:

Lisa – I think we can all agree that the media is a group of lying mendoucheous crapweasels.

  20. Daryl Herbert says:

They never seem to quote black people who believe crazy-ass conspiracy theories and say that’s why they’re voting for Sen. Obama.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I want more misleading anecdotes that drum up racism and are published solely for reasons of partisan hackery . . .

  21. JD says:

MayBee – I watched 4 straight hours of MSNBC last night. I had to take a shower in bleach to get the Baracky love juice off of me. Olberdickhead is truly the worst person on earth. Maddow kept bleating about post-rational thinking. Buchanon was Pat. Crissy will be picking the Baracky pubes out of his teeth for weeks.

  22. JD says:

Make the world a better place,
    Punch Olberdouche in the face.

  23. MayBee says:

    Here’s Barnicle’s ridiculousness:

BARNICLE: You know what Rush is missing here? As I said earlier, he‘s a great entertainer. And he‘s a great American entertainer. And he preaches largely three hours a day to the American heartland. And they listen to him and they respond. He‘s missing a truly great American story, I would submit, and it is this: a black guy from Chicago running for president of the United States, who two years ago would have di>fficulty getting a cab on a rainy Friday afternoon in midtown Manhattan, is this close to securing the nomination of one of our two political parties. That‘s a huge story that Rush, because he‘s bound to ideology, has missed.

He‘s not the only one who has missed it.

Ideology should play no part in a presidential election.

  24. Lisa says:

As long as Sean “I drink deeply of the cock of Cheney” Hannity remains un-cockpunched, then Keith “I drink deeply of the cock of Obama” Olbermann should remain unmolested. They kind of cancel each other out with their popular, joyous celebrations of partisan fuckery.

  25. Education Guy says:

    Hannity has much better hair.

  26. MayBee says:

JD- I finally had to change to CNN. There I saw some pundit say that Obama saying God Bless America! is just him getting finally to say who he really is.

  27. cranky-d says:

Maddow kept bleating about post-rational thinking

I guess they’re getting more honest, though I interpret it as “non-rational” thinking. I have no idea what “post-rational” means, but I imagine it results in massive income redistribution. I guess Obama’s idea to increase taxes on the most wealthy, whether or not it actually increases overall revenue, is an example of post-rational thought.

Lisa, I think part of the problem with media representation is that “incidents” seem to happen more often in poor communities. The white people they interview in those cases are just as unrepresentative of mainstream white people. The problem is fewer representatives of mainstream black folk are out there, distorting the perception for people who don’t know the reality.

I’m not excusing the media by any means, just providing a possible explanation. If it can be refuted with evidence, my little feelings won’t be hurt one bit.

  28. Lisa says:

JD: WHY would you watch MSNBC for more than a few minutes (to view post typhoon pictures or scandalous photos of Miley Cyrus)?

You might as well have smoked crack and inhaled amyl nitrate all night (while being pounded in the ass by a male hooker). You would probably feel just as terrible in the morning (both your brain and your ass).

  29. Karl says:

Lisa is on a roll this morning.

    BRAVA !

Now, you are wrong. Olberfesteringrectalfistula is far worse of an ass. Hannity is a nice guy in person, and there is no reason to suspect that he who swallows the Obama spunk is anything close to a nice guy, and lots of evidence to the contrary.

cranky-d – She had no idea what she was talking about either. The first time she said it, Gregory looked at her funny, but after that, it looked like the other panel members just let it go, figuring it was probably a term they should have been familiar with. Methinks she was just making it up. Either way, it is sad when that Air America thespian is the closest thing to rational thought on your network.

  31. Lisa says:

#27: Yes, you are correct to a point. Yes, drive-bys and robberies occur in mostly shitty neighborhoods. However, within those shitty neighborhoods are plenty of people who can throw a sentence together. But they always go for the more “colorful” characters (referred to by black folks as the “hotghettomess”. This is purely anecdotal, though – so I have no statistics.

  32. JD says:

You might as well have smoked crack and inhaled amyl nitrate all night (while being pounded in the ass by a male hooker). You would probably feel just as terrible in the morning (both your brain and your ass).

I am both disgusted, and mildly and disturbingly aroused. lol Damn you to hell Lisa. I denounce you. You are killing me today.

  33. Education Guy says:

    Lisa,

It’s because the smart people who can speak coherently are smart enough to stay away from the press, knowing as they do, that the press has an interest in making them look less than they are because of where they are.

  34. Lisa says:

    LMAO!

I am glad to be of service, JD!

See you later, I am off to a bunch of meetings (that is what they call the group navel-gazing sessions they have in academia).

  35. Matt, Esq. says:

Whether misinformed or not, I think at the end of the day, the general voting public (many of whom are indeed white and go to Nascar races) just don’t trust him. Remember, alot of rednecks are also union members and democratic supporters. Obama’s made alot of stupid decisions which, while they seem small taken individually, add up to alot of “stuff” floating around which the ordinary voter, who doesn’t read blogs and doesn’t intellectualize about candidates, takes note of, even if the information is wrong or inconsequential (my example here is the flag pin non-issue- while not a huge deal, I know people who bring that up when talking about Obama like it is a big deal).

Many people are as uncomfortable about Obama’s past associates indicating possible prejudices, just as those same people would be concerned with a white candidate whose past associations implied a prejudiced view towards blacks. However, its interesting that a white candidate could no longer get away with that type of prejudice, even with white voters, while many black voters not only don’t care if Obama’s prejudiced against white people, they echo that same sentiment themselves.

I think that’s whats going to sink him in the general and its why I’m glad he’s going to be the nominee instead of Hillary. McCain’s an almost vanilla candidate compared to Obama but despite McCain’s failings, people who feel a general distrust towards Obama are going to vote for McCain as the safe choice. God knows he has 20x the experience.

By putting a inexperienced black empty suit forward as the candidate rather than a more experienced but still polarizing woman candidate, I think ultimately the democrats have managed to shoot themselves in the foot again, on the same level they shot themselves in the foot by putting Kerry forward as the candidate in the last election.

Say it with me “Rove you magnificent bastard!”.

  36. N. O'Brain says:

” Obama won 91 percent of the black vote in North Carolina, but Clinton took 59 percent of the white vote. ”

91% of the vote? That statistic approaches the kind of result you see in elections held in totalitarian states where there is only one candidate– and you’d better vote for him, or else.

So, let’s have a frank, open and honest discussion about those statistics, and what they suggest about residual racism in this country, shall we? Who’s behaving in a stereotypically racist manner here, and for which block of voters is the color of one’s skin the most important consideration?”

    – Yes. Particilarly when her very existance keeps pissing in your messiahs political cornflakes.

    – I could care less really, but Lisa you shopuld thank her for her service to your candidate, because id he had to go through the revelations of the past three weeks, cold, at some critical point of the general, his ass would be grass. By early vetting, Hill-Bot is helping him dis-infect his campaign to some extent.

    – In the mean time, no amount of yammering is going to make the two unseated States go away, and no amount of looking the other way is going to negate Obama’s head to head lower numbers against McDinosaur.

  41. mojo says:

Geeze, now they’re anointing Barry O as the nominee!

A little early for that, isn’t it, guys? Who knows? Anything could happen. Hillary may vanish in a puff of smoke. Barry may wander in front of a speeding truck.

Or the horse MIGHT learn to sing!

  42. Radish says:

    1) I’m not sure why they were looking for NASCAR at an IRL event. Shame on Clinton, “the media”, and y’all for not knowing that they’re governed by separate organizations and appeal to different kinds of fans.
    2) Randy Moss just started a NASCAR (truck series) team.

  43. kelly says:

Easy there, mojo, on speculating something untoward could happen to the Messiah. All the cool lefties have already prophesied that should he get the nomination, he may well get the crucifixion.

“For you didn’t know, Barry, the world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.”

  44. B Moe says:

Moss said. “I am by nature a very competitive person and this is an outlet for me to compete at another level.”

I hope he understands just how true that is. Auto racing, NASCAR in particular, is a brutally competitive world. It is also a world that revolves around corporate image, and will brook no foolishness from its competitors, so hopefully this will help Mr. Moss continue to keep his nose clean. Good for him.

  45. Jim in KC says:

Yeah, B Moe, NASCAR has gotten a bit boring nowadays.

  46. libarbarian says:

    It’s funny.

I’ve noticed that people who tend to glibly assert that “Of course, we all know that anyone who opposes Israel automatically gets labeled an anti-semite by the Jewish Lobby” usually turn out to be, in fact, anti-semites.

But of course, when it comes to white people who can’t seem to discuss Obama without jumping on the cross and bemoaning how “any white person who opposes Obama really are automatically labeled a racist by the blacks and Obamabots” isn’t anything like that…..

  47. guinsPen says:

    Funny, how?

  48. ironpacker says:

I don’t have the intelectual horsepower to compete in PW comments, but I love the fact that the Dems have to decide if it is worse to be a racist or a misogynist.

i thought we people under the western gods are better than that; folks in the “Land of the Free” are supposed to be enlightened. don’t let the minority terrorists fool you into fearing any ol’ muslim (fact check: obama isn’t one): for every kind wouldn’t-kill-an-ant granny out there, there’s always one duplicate in the arab world.

  51. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – Actually I had forgotten something that popped up the other day. Obama is, in fact, born a Muslim to a muslim father, in the eyes of the Muslim community, and since he has converted to Xtian he is also now an apostate, an infidel, probably uses barbacue sauce from NY city, and automatically is under a Fatwa of death for doing so. Not that it matters I suppose, but them are the fax jack.
