Heart of Paleness [Dan Collins]

In the Poconos
I saw a Christian, armed, ignorant,
Who, perched on a deerstand,
Held a Rolling Rock in his hand,
And drank of it.
I said: “Is it good, friend?”
“It is bitter–bitter,” he answered;
“But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because I don’t know no better.
And I ain’t votin’ for Obama.”

(with apologies to Stephen Crane)

    Now quiet, young fool,
    for an eight pointer has stepped into the clearing
    head up, sniffing, listening
    and if I nail him good and true
    then my shriveled heart will grow
    two sizes this day.
