Jimmy Carter, fresh off of sniffing wood glue, takes to legal parsing in defending the Sudanese government against charges of genocide:

“If you read the law textbooks … you’ll see very clearly that it’s not genocide and to call it genocide falsely just to exaggerate a horrible situation I don’t think it helps.”

Mr Carter, if outcome is any indications, didn’t think a nuclear-free North Korea helped much either — and he wasn’t too sanguine on how helpful would have been an aggressive US response to the Iranian Student Revolution that kept US citizens hostage for over a year. And lest we forget, it wasn’t helpful, in Carter’s view, to cast communism as evil, nor was it helpful to complain about a dying economy when all one needed to do was put on a few more layers of clothing to keep warm.

Or, to put it another way, the only thing Jimmy Carter seems to find helpful are the things Jimmy Carter finds helpful, though ironically, these things have a track record of proving completely unhelpful — unless, that is, your interests run counter to US interests. In which case, Carter is something of a transnational savior.

Ken McCracken at Say Anthing has a different take on the Sudanese conditions — citing the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide to make his case.

Which is helpful, given that the 200,000 people who have died in this legally non-genocidal Janjaweed depopulation program could not readily be reached to testify.

Their having been, you know, depopulated and all.

Not very helpful on their part, sure — but the blame almost certainly goes to AIPAC and Israel. Just because.
