A PTA member objected to the decoration, saying that the reference was to Ramadan and that the school didn&#8217;t allow religious symbols.<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth Zahdan, who hung the lights, asked the school board <strong>why it would permit Christmas trees and Santa Claus and not allow an acknowledgment of her faith.<\/strong> The school board immediately began considering a ban on all religious references\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u20ac\u009dincluding the annual Christmas party\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u20ac\u009dso as not to offend any group.<\/p>\n<p>That outraged parents whose children revel in the Christmas-themed celebrations, and many attended the meeting to speak in favor of the Christian observances.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Why would a school board permit Christmas trees and Santa Claus and not allow an acknowledgment of her faith?\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Because the former do not have much of anything to do with the latter, as recognized by everyone from the <a href=\"http:\/\/caselaw.lp.findlaw.com\/scripts\/getcase.pl?court=US&amp;vol=465&amp;invol=668\">US Supreme Court<\/a>\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0to\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/xmasfun.com\/Stories\/CB\/Default.htm\">Linus Van Pelt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But not by\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0folks in Oak Lawn, who kneel before their graven images of Santa and His eight tiny reindeer.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 And from there, who knows where the submission ends?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Chicago Tribune\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0reports on the Pagan-Wiccan enclave in Oak Lawn, IL: Residents and school officials in Oak Lawn said they want to unite their community after a tense three-week debate divided some Christians and Muslims.
