\nAs Mike Nifong was calling the Duke lacrosse team a “bunch of hooligans” in public, he was privately acknowledging that the rape case would be hard to prove without DNA evidence and without being able to prove that a suspect was even at the party in which the stripper claimed she was raped and beaten.\n<\/p>\n
\nBut the Durham County district attorney insisted on pressing ahead with the case, police Investigator Benjamin Himan said on the opening day of Nifong’s ethics trial.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe North Carolina State Bar has charged Nifong with several violations of the state’s rules of professional conduct, and if convicted, Nifong could be stripped of his license to practice law in the state.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
—which, if you ask me, is too soft a punishment, but one that I certainly believe he deserves. A better punishment might be to compel Nifong to share lunch conversation and an enormous bowl of Miso soup with Amanda Marcotte. Same spoon and everything<\/i>!<\/p>\n
\nThe irony here is that nothing offered so far proves that Nifong didn’t believe the rape actually took place—which would suggest that the prosecution was politically motivated, and knowingly unethical (though such information may still come out, and I believe it will)—and yet he is being tried on ethics charges as a way to return credibility to the Durham County and the NC State Bar.\n<\/p>\n
\nWhich is to say, his trial most certainly has a very public political angle.\n<\/p>\n
