The United Nations has extended its mandate for US-led forces in Iraq after the country\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s foreign minister said they were \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cvitally necessary\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d for security and regional stability.\n<\/p>\n

\n Hoshyar Zebari called the UN security council\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s move \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cvery positive for Iraq\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d.\n<\/p>\n

\n He said all Security Council members understood \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cwhat the Iraqi government is facing\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d, illustrated by the bombing of Samarra\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s Askariya shrine on Wednesday by \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cterrorists \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u00a6 seek to destroy the fabric of Iraqi society\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d.\n<\/p>\n

\n The resolution adopted by the Security Council last year, which extended the mandate of the multinational force for one year starting on December 31, authorised a review of the mandate by June 15.\n<\/p>\n

\n At an open council meeting, Zebari said that despite Iraq\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s daily violence, \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cthe government has made tremendous strides toward the day when security will be provided by a self-sufficient, Iraqi national security force\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d.\n<\/p>\n

\n He said: \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cWhile Iraqis will always be grateful for their liberation from an absolute despot, no Iraqi government official – indeed, no Iraqi citizen – wants the presence of foreign troops on Iraqi soil one day longer than is vitally necessary.\n<\/p>\n

\n \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cBut today, and for the foreseeable months at least, the presence of [foreign] troops is vitally necessary not only for Iraq but also to safeguard regional security and stability.\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
