With just a day left at talks to fight global warming in Nairobi, Canada had racked up the most “fossil of the day” prizes handed out by environmentalists to nations they say have delayed, obstructed or stalled the negotiations.

\nAs delegates boo-ed loudly, activist Maia Green said Canada had won joint first and second place on Thursday for, among others things, “misleading” the world, “repudiating” the Kyoto Protocol and “flagrantly … washing its political laundry on the international stage”.
\n
\nThen she placed an oil lamp and Canadian flag on a podium in front of a poster of a fire-breathing Tyrannosaurus rex. Burning fossil fuels like coal is a big source of the greenhouse gases blamed for global warming—hence the name.
\n
\nFirst launched in 1999 at the annual climate convention of 190 nations, the “fossil of the day” award has named-and-shamed countries deemed to have failed by the Climate Action Network (CAN) of green non-governmental organisations.
\n
\nWhile provides a daily dose of light relief, organisers say winners find it harder than you might think to laugh off.
\n
\nA Canadian delegate stormed away and refused to talk to reporters after his country won a “fossil” prize this week.
\n
\nCanada has been slammed at the Kenya talks, which are trying to agree a successor to Kyoto, mostly for saying it would be “very, very difficult” for it to meet its promised cuts in the emission of greenhouse gases.
\n
\nOther “fossil” winners have included Australia, Saudi Arabia, the E.U. and United States.
\n
\nU.S. President George W. Bush, whose country has rejected Kyoto, was being honoured as “Fossil of the Century”.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nIt’s so densely packed with stupidity that one hardly knows where to start, though Maia Green seems a useful handle.  Amazing that George Bush would win fossil of the century so early in the century, too.  Storming seems to be getting more violent, as well.\n<\/p>\n

As an example of U.N. brainwashing at this week’s climate change meeting in Nairobi, Inhofe held up a children’s book he said was distributed at the gathering, called “Tore and the Town on Thin Ice.”\n<\/p>\n

\nHe said the book, the tale of a fictional young Arctic villager who becomes aware of global warming when his dogsled crashes through thinning ice, relies on disputed science.\n<\/p>\n

\n“This is paid for by the United Nations and it’s brainwashing little kids,” Inhofe said.\n<\/p>\n

\nInhofe did not attend the Nairobi meeting but said some of his staff did.\n<\/p>\n

\n“What we learned in Nairobi is … that the real focus has little to do with the fate of the planet and more to do with money—who has it and who wants it,” he said.\n<\/p>\n

\nInhofe will be the ranking Republican on the environment committee when the newly elected Democratic majority takes power in January. Barbara Boxer, a California Democrat with long-standing environmental credentials, will chair the committee.\n<\/p>\n

\nBoxer and two other Democrats wrote a letter to Bush on Wednesday urging him to fight global warming by putting mandatory limits on greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

“I sincerely believe if Australia joined the rest of the world community in the Kyoto process, then the pressure on (US President George W.) Bush would be enormous, just enormous,” Gore told reporters in Sydney.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
