Oh, dear lord, let it be true!*

Because if it is, I’ll send flowers to the big orange lug!

Obama claims he was offering the moon to the intransigent wingnuts, what he is calling “an extraordinarily fair deal” that was, if anything, “too light on revenues.” Which, translated, means he was insisting still on tax increases (of $1.2 trillion over 10 years, in exchange for spending cuts of $1.6 trillion over 10 years — a “cut” wiped out by this year’s deficit spending included in the Obama budget!). And of course, none of this “extraordinarily fair deal” exists anywhere in writing — something the GOP should take advantage of when the usual suspects start insisting that they squandered a remarkable opportunity. You can’t vote on a speech, and the President’s decision to keep the talks behind closed doors only benefits him if the GOP caves. If they don’t, they can point out that, despite his public pronouncements, the President put nothing in writing — and the Dems never offered up any legislation of their own.

Clearly, the President is now hoping the media and the GOP establishment will help him bring pressure on Boehner, who is having more trouble that he thought he would keeping the conservatives at bay, to reach a compromise.

I pray we can provide the counterweight — and that the conservatives have finally succeeded in convincing Speaker Boehner that the only way we’ll “default” on August 2 is if the President and Geithner eschew Constitutional mandates and fail to pay the debt service by choice.
