At Canada’s National Post<\/em>, Michael Coren<\/a> reports on “Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race” — a new exhibit at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa on the role of the elites that “gave a grimy intellectual veneer to the Nazi genocide”:<\/p>\n

The exhibit is important, accurate but, regrettably, long overdue. It also fails to stress just how much the socialist left initiated and supported the eugenics campaign, not only in Germany but in Britain, the U. S. and the rest of Europe. Playwright George Bernard Shaw, English social democrat leader Sydney Webb and, in Canada, Tommy Douglas were just three influential socialists who called, for example, for the mass sterilization of the handicapped. In his Master’s thesis The Problems of the Subnormal Family, the now revered Douglas argued that the mentally and even physically disabled should be sterilized and sent to camps so as not to “infect” the rest of the population.<\/p>\n

It is deeply significant that few if any of Douglas’s left-wing comrades in this country or internationally were surprised or offended by his proposals. Indeed the early fascism of 1920s Italy, while unsavoury and dictatorial, had little connection with social engineering and eugenics. The latter German version of fascism was influenced not by ultra conservatism in southern Europe but, as is made clear in the writings of the Nazi ideologues, by the Marxist left.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Coren, the author of a highy-regarded biography of H. G. Wells, knows whereof he writes.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 It is a companion piece of sorts to our host Jeff G’s\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0“Provocateurism”<\/a> series discussing the\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0topic as raised\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0in Jonah Goldberg’s Liberal Fascism<\/em>, as well as Jeff’s recent pieces of Devil’s advocacy\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0under the heading of\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0“The Rise and Fall of Homosexual Culture: could science and judicial activism lead to the eventual eradication of homosexuality?”<\/a><\/p>\n

I found Coren’s piece via see-dubya<\/a>, who also notes the story of Bertha Pinedo Bugarin<\/a>, a 48-year-old woman who ran an abortion clinic who faces multiple felony charges in Los Angeles and now Chula Vista of running\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0unlicensed abortion clinics that preyed on women in the Hispanic community and endangered their lives.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 A quick scan of Google News<\/a> this morning turned up only a dozen or so stories on Bugarin — almost entirely local coverage.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Some topics are just a bit too sensitive for the establishment media.<\/p>\n
