Obama\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s announcement Thursday that he would become the first candidate to opt out<\/a> of the public financing program for the general election was a big deal for some of the nation\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s most influential newspaper editorial boards, which have long been ardent champions of campaign finance reform and which had thought they\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2d found a kindred spirit on the issue.<\/p>\n

Friday morning, scathing editorials in many top broadsheets characterized Obama\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s move as a self-interested flip-flop, dismissed his efforts to cast it as a principled stand and charged that Obama wasn\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2t living up to the reformer image around which he has crafted his political identity.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is not the Barack Obama they knew.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 But you know who is not<\/em> alienated by the decision?\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 The reporters actually covering the Obama campaign.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Indeed, Jake Tapper<\/a> of ABC News deconstructs Obama’s Friday presser and was “flummoxed that the press conference was so bereft of conflict.” (Tapper’s piece is also worth reading to note how many of Obama’s answers have the gravitas<\/em> of cotton candy.)<\/p>\n

As I noted last Thursday<\/a>, I have never been a big fan of public financing and \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u20ac\u009d judging from the tax receipts \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u20ac\u009d neither has the general public.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 However, some may care about the flip-flop and\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Obama breaking his word.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 As I have also noted previously<\/a>, there is a sizable bloc of voters who use issue positions to gain insight into the character of the candidates — and that candidates that are\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0seen as otherwise qualified and competent lose when voters find them lacking in terms of honesty and trust.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Those<\/em> are the people Obama has to worry about alienating.<\/p>\n
