I have a friend who works in a DA’s office. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Recently, there has been a scandal concerning the processing of “downer” cattle–too sick or weak to be used as food, for both\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0health and humane reasons<\/a>. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0This is terrible, of course, and the secretary has been fielding calls nonstop. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0They’ve received 6000 emails from around the globe on the subject.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0It was terrible, too, when a mentally disturbed man poured lighter fluid over a dog and lit it. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0They received emails from as far away as Australia on that one, urging them to throw the book at the guy.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0While the phone is ringing off the hook regarding the cows,\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0John Michael Burton<\/a>‘s sentencing was scheduled for Friday. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0He’s a “boyfriend” who beat to death a 4-month-old baby girl in 2005, tried and convicted this year. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0The biological family of the dead infant actually support the killer, and after the guilty verdict was brought, a couple of these people attempted to jump the DDA in the courtroom hallway. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0He has to go about with agents, due to the death threats he’s received from these genetic anomalies.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0How many messages do you suppose the DA’s office has gotten, email, snail mail or telephone, on behalf of that murdered baby girl? \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Care to guess? \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0If you guessed one, you guessed too many.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0There have been other such episodes. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0I fancy myself an animal lover, but when our bizarre cult of The Other goes so far as to deprive members of our own species of their humanity so that we may lavish it elsewhere, we have ourselves become beasts.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0From the Ontario Daily Bulletin write-up of the trial:\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

old foster daughter. Jurors deliberated about five hours before announcing their decision in the trial of 29-year-old\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

Burton will be sentenced to 25 years to life in prison when he returns Oct. 5 to West Valley Superior Court.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I’m glad the jury was able to see the facts,” Deputy District Attorney Jason Anderson said.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

Authorities say Burton fatally beat Tiffany Eilders on Nov. 30 while he babysat her for about an hour at his home\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

on Monte Vista Avenue.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

She was rushed to the hospital after he called 9-1-1 to report that she was struggling to breathe.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

Doctors later determined that she had a fractured skull, broken ribs and internal and external bruises.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

She died several days later from a brain injury related to the skull fracture.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

Most of the broken ribs appeared to be old injuries, but the skull fracture seemed fresh, leading doctors to\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

conclude that it must have happened while Tiffany was in Burton’s care.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

Others who had been around the child reported that she seemed healthy before she was left with Burton that\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

morning.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

Burton testified during his trial that he deeply loved Tiffany and did not harm her.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

His lawyer claimed all the injuries occurred either before Tiffany was left alone with Burton or while Burton or\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

paramedics handled her during rescue attempts. The defense attorney claimed Burton was being blamed for the\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

abuse because he was the last one who watched the baby.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

Prosecutors argued that Burton harbored ill will toward Tiffany because social workers had forbidden him from\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

living in the home with his girlfriend and the baby, leaving him with nowhere to go.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n
