This is the first in a series of posts discussing common misconceptions.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 However, since I only have one other misconception in mind to discuss, this may be a very short series.<\/p>\n
How often does one hear the phrase, “Doing the jobs Americans won’t do,” bandied about in the MSM?\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 How many people out there believe that is a correct statement?\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Show of hands?\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Those of you with your hands up, sorry, I think you are mistaken.<\/p>\n
I don’t believe there is such an animal.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 I think the correct statement would be, “Doing the jobs that Americans won’t do at the price they get paid.”\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 For instance, I would not work in a sewage treatment plant even if I were paid, say, $100K per year.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 If you paid me $200K per year, I probably would.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 For $500K, definitely.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 So somewhere in that range is my price point for doing a disgusting (yet very necessary) job.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 There are people out there whose price point is lower, and that’s why they work in the sewage treatment plant.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 The same is true for almost any job you can think of.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Everyone has a price point at which they think they are getting fair compensation for their labor and experience.<\/p>\n
The same is true for most jobs that have a high illegal immigrant representation, such as restaurant, hotel, and construction work.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 For better or worse, they are willing to do the job for what most Americans apparently feel is too low a wage.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 My mother and sisters used to clean motels for extra money around 30 or more years ago, for instance.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 So they were obviously willing to do the work.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 I imagine that now the wages are too low for many non-illegals to consider.<\/p>\n
Having a labor pool willing to work very cheap obviously keeps costs down for consumers, at the expense of keeping wages down for legal citizens.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 This has absolutely nothing to do with whether these are jobs that Americans won’t do.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 I doubt such a job exists.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
