In discussing l’affaire Letterman, the question was asked: Why is Sarah Palin’s family a target for Leftoid attacks?
To be perfectly fair (I hate it when that becomes necessary) Palin’s family is a strong point of her appeal. In fact, one of the main reason the Leftoids have to deal with a stereotyped construct is that their heads threaten to explode if they are ever forced to consider the reality.
Stereotype: Womyn® are good Progressive Democrats.
Reality: Sarah Palin is a Republican.
Stereotype: Only Democrats give power to Womyn®
Reality: Sarah Palin is not just a Governor, she’s Governor of a State where the Governor has real power.
Stereotype: All manly men are part of Teh Patriarchy, dedicated to preventing Womyn® from achievement and deeply resentful of anything resembling a subordinate position.
Reality: Todd Palin is a manly man with a manly occupation; nevertheless he seems quite cheerful and accepting that his wife’s occupation is much higher on the social scale than his.
Stereotype: Good Progressive Womyn® are supposed to abort their babies to prevent career difficulties, especially if they might have medical problems.
Reality: Sarah Palin has several (three?) children, the latest of which has Down’s Syndrome, and seems perfectly capable of handling her duties as Governor despite any child-care difficulties.
Stereotype:Patriarchal manly men don’t participate in child-rearing; they force the Womyn® in their lives to do it all, which is why Progressive Womyn® have to avoid childbearing if possible.
Reality: Todd Palin apparently participates wholeheartedly in child-rearing.
Stereotype: Winger dupes of the Patriarchy are supposed to be disgusted with childbearing out of wedlock, call such girls “sluts†etc., and cast them out.
Reality: Bristol Palin is an unwed mother. The Palin family (all of them, including Todd and the grandparents) has been supportive.
There is more, but you get the idea — the whole Palin family is a direct challenge to the Leftoids’ bigoted (yes, that’s what it is), stereotyped notion of what a family of right-wing God-botherers should be. Just one aspect of that, the legions of Womyn® who left child-bearing off until later and now have psychological problems with it, cannot be borne in any way and must be rejected in toto.
Now, in point of fact, down here among my gap-toothed redneck neighbors, Palin’s family looks a lot more like “us†than anything found within the DC beltway. I know lots of families where the woman makes more money or has a more powerful job than the man; unwed mothers are all around, and they get family and societal support, including from the church(es); men in manly occupations — firefighters, welders, construction, and the like — tend more often than not to have wives who are teachers, managers, or other higher-status jobs.
B Moe notes:
It’s that way across most of the country…
Yes. This is the real appeal of Sarah Palin, and from the Leftoids’ point of view it must be countered. Too bad (for them) they have so little knowledge of how things go that much of what they do to (putatively) counter Palin’s appeal turns out to be counterproductive unless addressed to the choir.
B Moe further notes:
Palin’s only chance is to start playing exclusively to that audience. When she gives speeches, give them to us, not the party elites or pundits. When she does interviews, talk to us, not the media hack across the table. Just talk right past the nay-sayers and directly address the voters. If she connects she has a shot.
Which is precisely what she’s doing at the moment, but she isn’t playing off the outrage! at such a vile joke — she’s cleverly and cheerfully pointing out that such attacks are a cultural problem for everybody (though not in those words) and pointing out the double standard in terms that anyone reasonable who’s watching can’t help but see it. You can tell it’s working by the hysteria among the Leftoids.
Regards,
Ric

Lol…Reihan said Palin’s “wonderful sprawling messy American family” was one of her good points…BUT no way was she a feminist heroine.
She was cynically chosen as means of harvesting Puma votes, and spent all all her campaign time either lashed to McCain’s side as a stage prop or being exploited as an attack dog saying things McCain was too politically cunning to say himself.
And in result, McCain got invited to the WH while Palin got snubbed when she tried to reach out to Obama post-election.
The GOP Patriarchy just used her like a two-dollar whore.
AND she signed on to it.
That argues to me that she isn’t terribly bright.
Comment by Ric Locke on 6/12 @ 9:11 pm #
Of course not. She went into politics voluntarily.
Compared to a guy who can’t speak in public without a TelePrompter® and apparently believes the Arabs invented “Arabic numerals” she comes off pretty well.
Unprepared? Unprepared for national campaigning I’ll give you. Prepared for the duties of office? –again, compared to a guy who’s never so much as supervised the graveyard shift at a fast-food restaurant, a sitting Governor looks pretty good.

I commend you, Ric Locke. And thank you.
There is, however, another component, and it’s the attractiveness dealio. Being butt-ass ugly, for whatever reason, confers a certain legitimacy to a woman’s political pronouncements in modern day America. It’s a stereotype that goes beyond the family thing and goes directly to being a woman.
Comment by John Bradley on 6/13 @ 2:11 am #
Naah, attractiveness doesn’t matter. All that matters is the letter after their name.

* not-hot lefty (e.g. Hillary, Pelosi, etc.) – gravitas, baby

Ric, you left out the most galling aspect of Palin’s career: she started in politics because she wanted to change things, went ahead and did it BY HERSELF. Alaska’s Senator Murkowski only got the job because of her father, Clinton owes her career to her husband and Pelosi’s father was a Congressman. Many people who thought Palin as a national politician was laughable seemed to have no problem with Caroline Kennedy. In others words all those “independent” women all needed a male relative to run interference for them and give them a head start.
How dare she actually do all those things her opponents give lip service to!

Which is amply shown up by the vicious, over-the-top nastiness that passes for “humor” among the statists.

Palin’s fine.
I can tell by reading yet another hysterically off the wall post on her from Andrew Sullivan, professional turd, that she is pressing all the right Pavlovian buttons on the Obamist Left.
What she is doing is connecting with the average person. The Left does not get this and never will. And what’s more, the average guy likes an underdog who succeeds against the odds and does great things with his or her life.
Palin just roped Exxon into her oil pipeline deal with TransCanada. This is a major triumph for her. Everyone is now on board with her project. This is the largest private pipeline project in the world and it’s her baby.
A year from now, when Oil is north of $100.00 a barrell and the libtards are reduced to making spluttering excuses fro Teh Won and sex jokes about Palin, Sarah will look like the prophet from Alaska.

Excellent analysis. It should be pointed out here that Letterboy’s attack came just 2 days after Palin drew over 20,000 to an event in Auburn NY, 1 day after she received a warm welcome by 12,000 participating in the Autism walk on Long Island, and later that day received an award from Independent Group Home Living Foundation for helping to raise awarness of those living with disabilities. It also came later the same day that Palin announced that there would be big news regarding the pipeline deal. If Letterboy had not attacked when he did we would be analyzing Palin’s highly successful swing through NY, AND the fact that she help cement the deal between Exxon-Mobil and TransCanada to get the pipeline project underway, something that every governor of Alaska has talked about, but failed to achieve.
We can’t forget that Palin has essentially been on a roll for the last few months dating back to her highly effective speech at the Right to LIfe event in Evansville. Following closely on the heels of that, several of the bogus “ethics” complaints were dismissed, she took Notre Dame to task for inviting 0bama to address their graduating class, she spoke out in defense of Carrie Prejean, she condemned the murder of George Tiller, and the next day condemned the killing of Pvt Long, and drew attention to the fact that Pvt. Long’s murder was being ignored by the media, while Tiller’s murder was being extensively reported. Oh yeah, throw in the announcement that she got a big book deal.

Actually, she has 5 kids – two boys and three girls. I think that is part of why the left hates her – the more kids a woman has, the more she is being oppressed. Yet Sarah Palin has more than the acceptable 2 children and is clearly not oppressed.

Actually, Palin was chosen to solidify the base. I am a middle aged, white business owner and I wasn’t about to vote for McCain. But I held my nose and did it when he picked Palin as his running mate. Let’s face it, every complaint the left has about her is non-substantive. They don’t like how she talks, or how she dresses, or how happy she is. All issues of style. Guess what? I don’t think she is a great orator either. None of that has anything to do with being right on the issues. And given the unwillingness of the left to engage her on that basis I can only conclude that they feel they will not win that sort of argument. Indeed, that is why they put an empty suit up for office. A man of no accomplishment whatsoever to that point in time, whose legacy will now be that he intended to loot 49% of the country to buy the votes of the other 51% but ended up bankrupting the treasury for generations instead.
But hey, at least we were saved the spectacle of an American president dropping her g’s. That Obama is one cool cat!

For the record I have a PhD and believe me half of those people would not be able to manage a two person shop where they are one of the two.
She has managerial skill, learns quick and delegates when necessary. That is what you want in a leader. Second spot was good because she would be well set to take over afetr 4 years. Now it will be harder but as said if she just works on connecting to the average person she can win.

So… 59 and 60 is Nishi?
Take away the obvious sarcasm and those two posts are almost 100% right on.
McCain or McCain’s staff screwed Palin. She won’t campaign with a staff she’s not in control of again. Left to her own she’s doing great and doing all the right things.
What some entity called the “GOP” wants is irrelevant. In fact, what the GOP wants is probably a counter-indication of what conservatives should DO if they want to win elections. But mostly, the GOP isn’t the boss of us.
Which brings me to my contribution of why Palin is the target of so much lefty hysteria (pun intended.) Conservatives aren’t looking for a “boss”, no matter how much the left likes to talk like we’re all looking for a father figure or authority figure… it’s projection. When you’re looking for government to solve your problems and a leader to take care of you, those Ivy League creds are comforting.
I recall an editorial after Sarah was announced last fall that started out all positive how Sarah Palin made the writer realize that anyone could grow up to be president, that *she* could be President… after all… she had a Journalism degree TOO. The reader was supposed to realize that only special people who are much better than us regular folks should be President.
I realize that Ric was focusing on her family and why her *family* is the subject of so much political bile that usually is reserved for opposition politicians themselves. He’s right on all the way.

When you’re looking for government to solve your problems and a leader to take care of you, those Ivy League creds are comforting.
Syn wins the thread .
Likewise, when the only things required to bring about desirable social outcomes is political will and government power, the leader of the government becomes super-duper awesomely important; that is where the will meets the power. When the left accuses conservatives of needing a supreme leader, they are indeed projecting—their premises.

Long ago,
before I heard a rivetting campaign acceptance speech under the most difficult advisarial media bombardment I have ever witness (this including the Nixon years),
before Michelle Malkin started linking to the nominate Palin website,
before I heard about a family with values deeper then politics,
before I saw a picture of a miss Wassila beauty contestant,
I read a news blurb from Alaska announcing that the governor was planning to file suit against listing the polar bear as an endangered species.
She had my vote from that point.
I sent her office an email that day, pledging to help her if possible, and cheering her for taking the fight to the Gorites head on.
The fact that she answered the email I sent that day, with a cheerful thanks for my support, was just the cherry on top.
You know I haven’t received a return email from my own governor, ever.

“She was cynically chosen as means of harvesting Puma votes, and spent all all her campaign time either lashed to McCain’s side as a stage prop or being exploited as an attack dog saying things McCain was too politically cunning to say himself.”
If you recall, the reason she was lashed to McCain’s side was that she had become a supernova that totally eclipsed him. Her rallies routinely drew much larger crowds than when McCain appeared alone. It was beginning to reflect poorly on McCain himself. They had no choice.
And the role of “attack dog” is one that has ALWAYS been filled by the VP nominee, to maintain the perception of above-the-fray gravitas of the Presidential candidate himself. If you condemn Sarah Palin for this without saying the same about scores of male VP nominees who preceded her, it’s either historical ignorance or rank sexism.

If her hubbie was some wimpy guy, they could soothe their own fears in some way, call her bitchy or such, but he is a manly-man, and “dishy”. That he is, really puts a point on it. The Left fears Alphas, because they have few, if any. Some women loathe her, because she’s Alpha. Those who love her, love her because she’s Alpha. This is why she’s so “polarizing”.

I think the commenters who noticed the Class Warfare aspect of this are onto something. I work in Manhattan, in the advertising business. A huge agency. My colleagues, almost to a person, are Lefties (there are a few dissenters, but they live like Christians in Caligula’s Rome).
They react to Sarah with a visceral loathing, and it’s all loathing of her lower-middle-class roots and style. They ridicule her accent, her college education, her syntax; her church (fundamentalist Protestant! HISSSS); her tacky fecundity, her small-town mayoralty, and her cheerful beauty-queen demeanor (the gays in particular hate this about her–jealousy, anyone?). These are the things that draw the most fire from them.
So they attack her because they know she has charisma to equal that of the Jackass-in-Chief, and appeals to all her Tacky Supporters, in Flyover Country/Jesusland. She is the symbol to them of the culture war they’ve been waging against the rest of us for several decades.
Yes, they fear her. Or they did last year. Now, triumphant over the vicious success of their “politics of personal destruction,” they are jeering and spitting and flinging poo whenever they see or hear of her.
They attack her: they hate US.

Cynn finally draws the Trollhammer. I always have kept her around because on rare occasions she would utter something worthwhile but enough is enough. One of the great things about Trollhammer is that it strikes at the jerks where it hurts the worst, they effectively cease to exist. There used to be a Nishi and a Thor around here but I never see them post any more, guess they fell off the earth or something.
