Tragedy Meets Irony [Dan Collins]

Many people were quite rightly appalled by the classist spin placed on the tragedy of yesterday’s Montana plane crash by AP:

Three California families headed to a retreat for the ultrarich were among the 14 victims of a plane crash in Montana. Seven children, all 9 or younger, were among those killed Sunday in Butte as their families were traveling to the Yellowstone Club near Yellowstone National Park for a skiing vacation.

Today, Anorak unearths some details about the crash that AP seems to have overlooked:

A PLANE crashes in Montana, landing in a cemetery killing seven children and seven adults. Fallows blogged about it here. But, as Andrew Sullivan says, nothing beats the Christian News Wire:

What the news sources fail to mention is that the Catholic Holy Cross Cemetery owned by Resurrection Cemetery Association in Butte - contains a memorial for local residents to pray the rosary, at the ‘Tomb of the Unborn’. This memorial, located a short distance west of the church, was erected as a dedication to all babies who have died because of abortion.

What else is the mainstream news not telling you? The family who died in the crash near the location of the abortion victim’s memorial, is the family of Irving ‘Bud’ Feldkamp, owner of the largest for-profit abortion chain in the nation.

Do I think it’s funny?  No.  But at least they died with their pride intact, eh?  I wish someone would ask Ward Churchill whether they were Little Eichpeople.

Forgive me, but I don’t see what possible good can come of dwelling on the facts presented above.

The question is, who or what ought to engage our sympathies? In my view, that is all of the above. That seems not to be AP’s view, though.

It just seems fraught with the potential for misread intent.

Lot of that going around lately.

Yes, it’s designed as a trap.

As much as I want to believe in some kind of karmic justice, because it “feels right,” the fact is that there is no justice this side of heaven. The good get struck down and the bad survive all the frelling time.
