It depends on the meaning of the word “trend” [Karl]

At the mothership, part-time troll Tim in SF does not think there is a trend on the part of the MSM to downplay party affiliation when a Democrat is mired in scandal.

For Tim’s consideration, here’s Ex-MD State Sen. Tommy Bromwell, US Rep. Bob Filner, TN State Sen. John Ford, Fmr. GA Gov. Lester Maddox, Rep. James Traficant, Rep. Gary Condit, former LA Gov. Edwin Edwards, former NC district court judge Garey Ballance and former U.S. Rep. Frank Ballance, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, former NC state House Speaker Jim Black, Former Newark Mayor Sharpe James, NOLA Councilman Oliver Thomas, US Rep. Kendrick Meek, Atlanta Councilman Jim Maddox, and Revere city councilor Mark Casella, just to name fifteen.

Update:  Note that it’s 16 if you count the Ballances separately.  Darleen adds Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, bring the count to 17.  And Jeff started with Minnesota state Senate President James Metzen, bringing the total to 18.

And then there’s LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Damn, Darleen is quick. So, how about Patrick Kennedy?

Since Tim in SF shows up in a thread puncturing still further the fallen Balloon Juice, and one “Tim F” is hugely responsible for that blog’s decline into lunacy (assisted by Mr. Cole’s own dissolution), is it likely that “SF” *is* “F?”

That about exhausts my truly caring; Balloon Juice was a favorite stop through 2004. After Cole went batshit over Schiavo, the blog got dull. Hey, you attract dullards, and that’s to be expected!

    Cordially…

    TW: foundered, down. No kidding.

Ah! Another article on Antonio…and yours is so damned apologetic for his behavior

The recent disclosures, coming at the midpoint of his four-year term, run against the mayor’s once carefully honed image as a devoted family man who promised a new era of transparency and integrity at City Hall.

But in a famously permissive city — and in an age when some presidential candidates are in their second or third marriages — it was not immediately clear if the political fallout would be more than temporary.

    sheesh

Interesting point. I can’t help but see the similarity with how Andrew Sullivan was interesting until he started his “Bush supports the Marriage Amendment” hissy fit and never stopped.

Here’s my favorite example. Back in January, a S.D. state senator was accused of fondling a male page. In this story his party affilition (guess which one!) appears in the 16th of 16 paragraphs.

    Relationship scrutinized
McMahan’s name has surfaced because of his relationship with Phipps, who has admitted paying kickbacks to three legislators.
Phipps pleaded guilty in June to a federal conspiracy charge.

He agreed to cooperate in the continuing investigation and is awaiting sentencing.

Phipps and his estranged business partner, former state Sen. Gene Stipe, co-own several abstract and title insurance companies.

McMahan’s office regulates the abstract industry.

    The straw donors
According to an FBI affidavit made public in March, Phipps and Stipe frequently made illegal campaign contributions through other people, called straw donors.
Those people would give money to political campaigns under their own names but were reimbursed by Stipe or Phipps, the FBI document alleges.

Phipps’ accountant, Rita Benson, previously told The Oklahoman she was given money by Phipps for her $3,200 contribution to McMahan’s 2002 campaign.

The FBI affidavit identifies 21 people as straw donors who gave $34,600 to Dan Boren’s 2004 congressional campaign. Fifteen of those same people gave a total of $35,863.89 to McMahan’s first campaign in 2002, records show.

Straw donors are used to bypass state and federal campaign contribution limits. It is illegal for both the straw donor and the person who provided the money.

McMahan has said he took three trips with Phipps:

A guided striper bass fishing excursion at Lake Texoma in 2002 with Phipps and then-state Auditor and Inspector Clifton Scott. Phipps paid for the one-day trip.

All people under investigation are Democrats and it is not mentioned ONCE in the article
