Only in America

Could such a putz be feted for such a crappy speech.  YMMV.

I brought a few main things away from this:

“It’s not about me talking about me.  It’s about you talking about me talking about you.”

“I support the right of unborn rural Ohio proto-humans to wield handguns when they visit gay hospitals.”

“I staunchly opposed the Iraq War from the start, in the Illinois Senate.”

“After 8 years of Bush and McCain, it’s time for 10 years of me throughout the 57 states.”

“I’m not going to question John McCain’s patriotism, so he shouldn’t question my . . . anything.  But if he were a real man, he’d invade Pakistan and hunt bin Laden down in a cave armed only with a Bowie knife,  just as I will, if elected.”

“I have a dromedary!”

This kind of backfired:

Barack Obama was Thursday to summon America to join his crusade for change, as the Democratic convention climaxes in a historic echo of Martin Luther King’s” “I have a dream” speech. Forty-five years to the day after the civil rights icon spelled out an electrifying vision of racial equality, Obama will claim his prize as the first-ever black presidential nominee of a major US political party.

I just heard Al Hunt say that it was a “boffo” speech.  I’ll have to check the definition of the word again.

I distinctly remember Hillary getting dogged for affecting a faux-southern accent during one or two speeches.. Did you catch Obama’s dead on Martin Luther King impression? Echo my ass.. an echo like Phil Hartman echoed Frank Sinatra.. Probably practiced in front of a mirror for a month..

  7. Comment by B Moe on 8/29 @ 4:00 am #

Obama aides have been downplaying expectations: the speech will be a “nuts and bolts” address, said spokesman Josh Earnest.

That is a Hall of Fame sentence, right there.

“We are the party of Roosevelt. We are the party of Kennedy. So don’t tell me that Democrats won’t defend this country. Don’t tell me that Democrats won’t keep us safe.”

Kennedy was the most recent Democratic president to keep America safe? Ouch. Plus, Bill and Hill won’t be liking that.

Standard Dem boilerplate preached to the choir.. The True Believers were left all misty eyed and filled with The Spirit… The rest of us non-Obamaniacs were left someplace between mildly entertained and bored.. Nothing’s changed.

“Unlike John McCain, I won’t give tax breaks to companies that take American jobs overseas, I will only give tax breaks to companies that keep jobs here.”

“Kennedy was the most recent Democratic president to keep America safe?”

Now don’t go hatin on our real first black president like that.. You cant say Bill didn’t keep us safe from terrorism.. He did call down the shock and awe on that empty terrorist base before calling it a day .. It’ll be a cold day in hell before one of those empty bases ever attacks one of ours again..

I’m sure O! will be every bit as forceful and decisive as Bill…

The speech — like Biden’s material — was aimed at the working class voters Hillary tended to get. The Obama campaign probably would have rethought the stadium setting for that appeal, but it was probably too late to dump the stadium.

The historic nature of the occasion, and Obama’s typically good delivery of the speech, may give him a decent bounce with disaffected Democrats and independents who are just starting to pay attention to the election. But the GOP will have their week to sell McCain’s record (more substantive than Obama’s) while making the case that Obama is a tax-and-spend liberal and naive on foreign policy.

  16. Comment by AK on 8/29 @ 5:03 am #

My favorite line has to be Obama’s promise to go to Afghanistan/Pakistan personally to get bin Laden. I assume he’ll be using his Indonesian passport, and going incognito as Barry Dunham-Soetoro.

I still can’t get over that some people think Joe Lieberman could be a correct VP choice for McCain.

There’s an alternate close-by planet they’re living on no one’s told me about yet?

The rest of us non-Obamaniacs were left someplace between mildly entertained and bored.

I was watching a rented DVD of a 1982 Doctor Who adventure, so I was slightly more than mildly entertained. Oddly enough, the story involved a transfer of power to what turned out to be something of a Manchurian Candidate. I did not remember that much about it when I rented it; it just happened to be Anthony Ainley’s first appearance as The Master.

The part where he basically dismissed the idea that someone who’s poor can pull themselves up by their bootstraps as a “discredited Republican idea” and suggested that the government should do it for you instead struck me as remarkably tone-deaf. I mean, it’s not like that’s a cherished American ideal going back for generations or anything.

Sean M.#21 : …poor can pull themselves up by their bootstraps as a “discredited Republican idea” ..

Yes, he slammed the discredited Republican idea of lifting oneself out of poverty by the bootstrap right after praising the American belief in hard work and sacrifice as a means of getting ahead.. and all this on top of his the running and recurring theme of entitlement for the least productive, least able portion of our society.. Talk about mixed messages.. Anything you want, it’s in there someplace..

Heh! It is really funny to see the reaction from well, reactionaries, to his speech. Just remember, this is the guy that is gonna bury the guttersnipe republicans politically for the next 8 years. And, if he accomplishes 1/3 of what he has said he will accomplish, he will effectively send republicans to the hinterlands of political relevance for a decade after that. Better get your shots in now because you are toast in the long run.

Wow, I’ve seen some pigheaded stuff on the Internet before, but these comments here pretty much take the award for partisan witch hunting.

The sad thing is if any of you took the time to step outside your partisan eggheads (and it’s obvious you haven’t when you slice and dice individual phrases) then perhaps you would understand that McCain is one of the worst candidates for POTUS to come around in recent history. Noun, verb, POW is all he has along with the mixed messages of honor, straight talk, and a C*NT of a wife.
