The latest Zogby/Reuters poll shows McCain leading Obama by five points–the first time that the GOP candidate has been in the lead since Hillary dropped out.
Support for Obama seems to be sinking across all categories:
The dip in support for Obama, who would be the first black U.S. president, cut across demographic and ideological lines. He slipped among Catholics, born-again Christians, women, independents and younger voters. He retained the support of more than 90 percent of black voters.
“There were no wild swings, there isn’t one group that is radically different than last month or even two months ago. It was just a steady decline for Obama across the board,†Zogby said.
Notice how Reuters works in the first black president bit? That gambit has two prongs: If Obama is winning it shows that he is a different kind of leader and can’t be held to ordinary standards and if he is losing, liberals can blame the voters for being racists.

On a micro level, most of the democrats in my life aren’t down with the O! My cousin and her husband were here last week, and one is voting for McCain and the other looks like he’s going to stay home. My mother and sister aren’t sure what they are going to do.

Few days ago I mentioned to a couple average libs in my office that McCain was climbing in the polls and asked what they thought might happen if The O! actually loses in November.. Without pause and in all seriousness they replied to the effect that it would just “show how racist this country really is…”.. I chuckled and waited for them to crack a smile.. They weren’t kidding.. The Believers truly believe that the ONLY reason anyone wouldn’t embrace the Secular Messiah is because they’re they’re a closet Klansman.. We had people crying in our office and going home sick when Kerry lost to Bush… Gnashing their teeth like it was the end of the world (It’s Seattle.. the term Dramaqueen comes to mind).. I cant imagine what the Obama hardcorps are going to do when he loses.. It’s not just about O!.. It’s gone far beyond a man.. it’s about black people in America.. Their self image.. their paranoia.. their sense of worth.. If he loses, I think 90% of the black population will feel .. will believe.. the white man just voted en masse to screw them.. How will they react? There’s the sixty thousand dollar question..

Oye. Jake, I think perhaps you should save up your vacation days. You may want to take a week off in November.
I’m sure in places like Detroit, the narrative with be something along the lines that cheating and racism could be the only explanation for the O! losing. A few elections back, I HEARD to black women talking, and one said to the other “You know, Bush is going to take away the black vote.”
I don’t know where they heard that kind of thing, but heard it somewhere they must have.

Be prepared, if The One loses, for an extensive and extended wallowing in every arcane and backwater whisper of “election fraud.” Unless McCain wins by a landslide there will be rending of hair and tearing of cloaks that the election was not only stolen but that it was stolen because the electorate is !RACIST! It will be amusing for a while until it becomes mind numbingly annoying.
The real question is what the actual effect of “racial victimization guilt” will have on actual voters. Will they be chastened and meekly submit to voting for Obama or will they lash out defensively by either staying home or voting for the familiar, even if the familiar is ties to an unpopular party and presidency.
Time will tell.

Denver is going to be fugly. We are in for some very interesting times, I fear. The Democrats have to be aware that Obama is sinking like a stone, and absent a miracle, will never be elected president. They are stuck between a rock and a hard place because of the ignorance of their base – an ignorance that they have knowingly and carefully courted. Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, John Murtha, etc. are about to find out what a great strategy they have been pursuing.
What I can’t understand is, where are these poll numbers coming from? I can honestly say I don’t know one person, including my liberal friends, who think that Obama is anything but a big, stinking bag of manure. His arrogance in thinking that he can bullshit his way into the presidency is pissing everybody off.
But get ready to duck when he loses, whether it be in Denver (where I wouldn’t be surprised to see Hillary knock him off), or in the general election. As Carin said, if you live in an urban area, it might be a good idea to plan your vacation for next week.
Jeff, don’t forget your M1-A1 if you actually go to the convention. I have a feeling that it’s going to make Chicago ‘68 look like the teddy bear’s picnic. Remember, the police are no longer allowed to do mass beat downs, which should make it quite interesting. And let us all know when downtown businesses start replacing their windows with steel plates.
The left leadership has been cynically manipulating and lying to the ignorant for too many years. As Alexandra says above: “You reap what you sow”. The proggs are about to reap the whirlwind that they have created. It’s just too bad that a lot of us are going to get caught in it, too.
The question is, will they bring down the whole country, or just themselves in what is looking more and more like a self destructive orgy of ignorance?

Denver is the Clinton convention, SHill and her proxies get 3/4 of the face time. How strong can the O be if he conceded all that to her when she has *no* real power?
As Coulter mentioned today, the O cited his undergrad degree as part of his foreign-policy qualification. Lucky he didn’t pull out the Law Review editorship, that would have certainly clinched the deal for me.

I’d go the other way. I think reaction to Obama’s loss would be more like “Meh. We kinda figured.” His faults have become plain enough.
Even the most ardent Obama supporter has to allow he’s young and not particularly accomplished, and that however brilliant and hopey and changey his ideas seem to themselves, it’s not likely a candidate of a different race espousing them would be treated differently.
No, the argument has to be, you are racist if you don’t ignore these deficiencies and vote for him BECAUSE he is a strong black man. Because you only prove your lack of racism by being willing to go for symbolism over substance.

Not the whole country. The country is fed up with being called racist, when it is not, by ignorant elitists who can retain untenable philosophic and political positions only with irrational racial racketeering that forbids true debate of their postmodern nonsense. The racket permeates contemporary liberalism completely, and justifies so much of it, that it will collapse upon itself unless racial guilt is constantly renewed.
When reality breaks through – that Dems have nominated someone to cool their self-induced pseudoracist guilt and not because Obama is more than an empty Chicago-machine-pressed suit – the party will be rejected and may crash. Others, however, will realize they’ve been had by the likes of certified malicious liar AL Sharpton and whore-mongering Jesse Jackson; they will resent deeply assertions that rejection of Obama cannot be anything but racist.

The difference between McCain and Obama is like the difference between a train wreck at 30 mph and one at 60 mph. I’m definitely voting for the 30 mph one, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be a train wreck.
