Karl CCed me this morning on an email (unpublished) to Hot Air:
Ed’s post on the Zogby poll sorta echoes the LAT poll analysis in suggesting that the race is tightening because of McCain’s attacks on Obama.
But take a look at the graph of the RCP average.
McCain starts trending upward at the end of June. Obama peaks on the July 4th weekend. At that point in the campaign Obama was still getting much more coverage than McCain. Obama had yet to make his World Tour, so there was no McCain celebrity ad, etc.
That line of attack seems to have helped McCain, who enjoyed a surge at the end of Obama’s World Tour (probably due to free media coverage of his ad about O! snubbing the wounded troops).
But that doesn’t change that the current trend started as far back as July 4th. The MSM is going to want to blame McCain/Republicans for their mean, sophomoric attacks on The One, but it seems at least equally likely that support for Obama started eroding once he rejected public financing, started flip-flopping on a whole range of issues, and trying to polish his image on character issues.
Karl also had this to say about this admonitory piece by Robert Arena today:
Robert Arena is casting pears before swine, even if he’s analyzing a week-old poll, rather than looking at the bigger picture. Key point is his post was the bit about attention is already higher than at any similar point in the cycle since 1992. That, combined with the continuing volatility, tells you neither candidate has really closed the deal.
As a related thought, it could be that (esp. if Obama loses) that people not invested in Teh Narrative will look back at the late June-July period as a period of major blunder for BO. Running around saying “I am too patriotic!” and “Look at me! I can stand next to Sarkozy!” was a lot of time spent highlighting his weaknesses as much as ameliorating them. Smarter folks on the Left will start saying (as one commenter at Americablog did) that BO should have spent the month ripping more pages out of the Clinton ‘92 playbook — It’s the economy stupid, we can’t afford four more years of failed GOP economic policies, etc.ÂÂ
The Clinton ‘92 crew had Message Discipline. You could have asked Bill Clinton if he liked the weather and he would have answered that it wasn’t bad, compared to “the worst economy in the last 50 years.” BO rolled out the McSamey attack rhetoric the other day, but he has had only marginally more message discipline than McCain. BO should have been making McCain seem like the riskier choice every single day. Instead, he’s playing defense, blustering with talk about how McCain does not know what he’s up against, when he’s up against the guy who similarly blustered about the Chicago Way from the Untouchables before he started sliding in the polls.
Any questions? I hope he’ll join us in the comments, but if not, I’ll convey them.
ÂÂ

- Hard to say just how much McCains Ads have effected Obama’s ratings. Certainly O’s handlers have set him up for some of the more obvious image problems re his ridiculous campaign stop in Germany. Matter of fact, its questionable that McCain has actually capitalized nearly as much as he might, after all Obama’s Euro tour cold be seen by many as an “in your face” to the American “middle”, as well as typical elitist Euro thinking.
- And then Saddleback was an O}bama disaster.
- Which, I think, speaks more to the point of Obama’s real problem; not so much MKcCains attacks as the fact that he is what he is, zn inexperienced Socialist Junior Senator, who has a cult of personality celeb going, and precious little else.
- As a direct result, as time goes on his positions and ideology will be brought to the front, no matter how hard they try to avoid it, and that I think will continue to depress of his numbers.
- IOW’s its not just McCains attacks, but Obama’s empty wagon of responses he can draw from. I also think thats why hes not taking the offensive and attacking McCain more vigorously. Theres very few areas he can be aggressive on without revealing more and more of his hard Leftist positions.

Obama has never been in a real campaign before, at any level. He got all his opponents DQed in the state senate race, and the Republicans self-destructed in the US Senate race. He is effectively making his rookie campaign run for President of the United States. To say he is out of his league right now is the Mother of All Understatements, and it is no going to get any prettier as the campaign heats up. I don’t think the kid has a chance.

Then he gets on the news and says, “Obama is too thin-skinned. He whines about being attacked.”
If Huckagobblechin really wanted to help, he’d let the RNC stick a helium hose up his bunghole – inflate until all loose skin has been stretched to maximum tautness, and paint a big McCain/Romney between his nipples and float him over Denver next week.

Don’t let the demi-god of thunder distract you. thor knows that Obama is wrong on this issue yet continues to pine for !Change! as an all purpose salve to heal the leaking blisters of partisanship and incompetence. How long, I ask, does one have to sit on a frozen hotdog before they have no clue it’s their own political party throttling their ass? From 2000 to 2005 DelayCo, LottCo and BushCo added $3-trillion dollars to our national debt. And they borrowed that mountain of money without the decency to close the southern border, or shoring up SS, or improving the prospects for working Americans without health insurance, not even a right hand reach around for the working man!

What? Not for the benefit of Illinois corn farming corporations? Baracky’s clammy hands are all over subsidies for grain alcohol producers.
NYTimes, June 23, 2008:
” …“We made a series of mistakes by not adopting a sustainable energy policy, one of which is the subsidies for corn ethanol, which I warned in Iowa were going to destroy the market†and contribute to inflation, Mr. McCain said this month in an interview with a Brazilian newspaper, O Estado de São Paulo. “Besides, it is wrong,†he added, to tax Brazilian-made sugar cane ethanol, “which is much more efficient than corn ethanol.â€Â
Mr. Obama, in contrast, favors the subsidies, some of which end up in the hands of the same oil companies he says should be subjected to a windfall profits tax. In the name of helping the United States build “energy independence,†he also supports the tariff, which some economists say may well be illegal under the World Trade Organization’s rules but which his advisers say is not. …”

Ok. All set now.
What made you think I thought poverty was colorblind? The majority of my personal experience is with inner-city poverty (which largely is black), but I currently reside in one of the poorest counties in the state, which is mostly white. White people fail as a result of poor choices as well. Perhaps different choices, perhaps the same. Lack of planing. Lack of ambition. An inability to work hard.

And, I’m going to assume we’re talking about POOR people. People who constantly have utilities shut off. People who are unable to make do with what they take in.

Not true. Someone can make $10 an hour, share a flat with a few friends, not run up their credit cards, and live a rather rich life. A buddy of mine is married with three children and her husband makes a very modest salary. She buys food in bulk and at a coop. She rents small apartment. They drive one car. Gustalpho: Your ignorance of Jesus, money and morality is stunning but not unexpected.
You would have a better understanding if you hadn’t truncated several of the verses so let me give you the proper verse and context (all emphasis mine):
1) 1Timothy 6:10: “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”
This may be the most misquoted verse in the bible. Of course money/riches in and of themselves are not inherently evil. only if the individual loves money and places it as the cornerstone of his life before God or man does evil become apparent. Strike one.
2) Matthew 19″ 19-23: “Jesus replied, ” ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, 19honor your father and mother,’[a] and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’[b]”
20″All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?”
21Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
22When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.
23Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Again the decision to love his money so much that he wouldn’t give it up to follow Jesus to be “perfect” weighed against him. His wealth in and of itself is not his downfall. His desperate need to hang on to it is the problem. Strike Two.
3) Luke 18:22-27: “22When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
23When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was a man of great wealth. 24Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! 25Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
26Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”
27Jesus replied, “What is impossible with men is possible with God.”
Trust in God more than wealth and the riches of heaven are yours. Strike Three
Nowhere in any of those passages (nor elsewhere in the New Testament) do you find Jesus talking about the forced redistribution of wealth by a government entity to the poor. Ya see, he was all about the pureness of heart in giving rather than pointing and demanding coin for someone else’s idea of charity. “Render unto Caesar” was not a carte blanche demand for rich people to give up wealth. Thus using Jesus as a justification for Marxist/Socialist organized redistribution to the poor is completely at odds with scripture and, Jesus’ teachings.
Thanks for playing and buh-bye, now!

Apparently, your moral judgment is that he is a prick for not giving away his money and he is also a prick because you think he will take yours. Wow.
Actually … you are kind of correct there.
He’s in a protected minority group, disabled, and poor. Not like those dum-dums in the ghetto though.
I’m sure you and he are very nice people when you’re not wingering at the ghetto folk. Nice discussing interpretive ideologies with you. I must go now and scold people who look different than
You really are an asshole. What I was illustrating was that my dad didn’t have a plan, so I’m HELPING HIM OUT. Not anyone else. Not the g’vment. Not O! When my sister needed help, we helped HER out. My bil called and needed help too. I’m thinking of changing my phone number.
But, I do know for sure that “I” can help my family members with a shit-load more efficiency than the gov’ment.
As for your opinion of me, and how I feel about the poor – well, you have no idea. I’ve volunteered at the soup kitchen. I’ve supported church drives to cloth the needy. What have you done? I criticize because I think our social service structure creates MORE needy and it sucks to live off the tit of the more productive members of society. I want MORE for them.

Excellent job, BJ. Bravo. The fact that people such as gus try and use that tack and always get stomped in return. No, gus, Jesus wasn’t advocating for the forced redistribution of wealth. You lose this round.

I see Thor more as a CHICKEN. He cannot make a rational argument as to why we should vote for O(no)! He cannot expound on any of his O!nesses ideas and is incapable of carrying on an argument without resorting to either childish taunts or physical (non) threats.
I’d be willing to put serious money that his Russian girlfriend? comes from an LL thing I ran into years ago in a newsgroup…do not google if you value your computer or your freedom.
I say ‘chicken’ because I really think his hammerness is a scared little puppy, hiding behind intellect (which I admit he has) and a wall of anonymity.
Thor? If you’re reading this? Do us all a favor…Go away. You’re not well received here. If you can’t fathom that? Seek proffesional help, as you could be a megolomaniac.
