Confessions of a self-loathing narcissist (from the protein wisdom conceptual series)

God, how I hate me.

— Though on the plus side, these Zanella linen trousers make my fabulous ass look even more fabulous! — if such a thing is possible…*

    The ennui of self-loathing narcissist…

What I love most about me is how bored I am with being so damnably amused by timmy’s fascination with my endlessly contemptible self.

Somewhere in Indiana, a young attorney in training is moping over his unrequited love. You’re a heartbreaking self loathing narcissist to boot. Bastard!

I would rather have timmy in my foxhole than Frankie. I think he’ll turn out alright in the end. Law school plus job, good for him.

    - It takes a village to raise a child…..But it takes a village of idiots to “growthen an entity with beautified self image, and awareness of otherness, and truthiness, and the absolute infallibility of the cause to greater good, and the undeniable omnipotence of the leader”…..

    - Apparently, as a SecProgg, if you manage to escape the coat hangers and brain drills, you have a wonderfully fullfilling, and totally vacuous future to look forward too. Maybe they look at their own lives and want to kill their babues out of pity.

    - The very best aspect of Progressivism, is as a group they have an end goal of extinction. That we don’t care to join them just proves what meanies we are.

That was truly vintage timmah. I like that our esteemed host parades that collection of spittle right out in front of everyone, shining a spotlight on teh krazy coming from our intellectual and moral betters, like timmah. He really seemed unhinged.

We may not be quite as conservative as we once were here in Indiana, but I can assure everyone that we are most certainly not trending timmah’s way.

  15. Comment by Tim P on 8/7 @ 10:24 pm #

While you’re chasing down Beauchamp, make sure you once again can forget to post on the verdicts of actual war crimes trials…raping and murdering a 14 year girl vs. running over a dog. I guess Beauchamp is more detrimental to the “morale” of the American people.

In the midst of his hissy fit, he gave voice to the next phase of the progressive spinning of the sad little Beauchamp saga. How the great ‘rightwing noise machine’ created all this froth about some shmuck whose only problem was creating phony incidents for his stories.

All the while the real criminals, those convicted of rape and murder, which incidentally prove Beauchamp’s point, are ignored.

Trouble is, that those Marines and soldiers who did commit these crimes were the exception, not the rule. The perpetrators were prosecuted and found guilty. The system worked and and the criminals were brought to justice by their own. Hardly the broad brush indictment of our inhuman and dehumanizing war effort many progressives so fervently hope for.

One of the main implications of stories like Beauchamp’s, to me anyway, were not only that ugly things happen during war, no news there, but that they painted, by implication, all Americans serving in this conflict. A latter day ‘winter soldier’ narrative.

Painting our troops as the real criminals is the logical next step after “ofcourse we support the troops but” and the oh so nuanced, soldiers are (hapless bumpkins who didn’t do well in school and wound up stuck in Iraq) victims meme.

  16. Comment by Jeff G. on 8/7 @ 10:36 pm #

I’ve never been on record defending rape and murder, so I see no reason why I have to condemn it in the case referenced.

I have, however, been quite consistent about defending the importance of a certain type of journalism (provided we, as a culture, maintain certain conventions), so the Beauchamp story — which I engaged with only after reading a semiotic analysis that I found problematic in parts — fits in with many of the themes frequently covered here.

But I do so love how timmy followed up heet’s lead with the whole “you think you’re so smart, mr smarty farty pants” critique. Even his jibes are unoriginal.

In fact, poorman broke it out the other day, as well — asking why I liked to “wank” in public by getting all academic-like.

To which I’d respond, why do you care? Aren’t their, like, kitten pics to caption, or action figures to pose in the ongoing project of showing how stupid and evil Rethugliklans are?

Why do these people care what I write about, or what my academic interests are? Why the need to comment on them — or to analyze my character so frequently?

    Curious.

  17. Comment by JD on 8/7 @ 10:47 pm #

Because they have no sense of purpose or lives of their own, and thrive on being able to personify that which they consider to be evil on the other side. Just guessing …

They live vicariously through their hatred of all things not Democrat.

  19. Comment by Karl on 8/7 @ 10:59 pm #

Why do these people care what I write about, or what my academic interests are? Why the need to comment on them — or to analyze my character so frequently?

    Curious.

Sarcasm aside, we have covered this ground before, but folks who might be new to PW should be made aware that Jeff is particularly hated by the Left precisely because he comes from academia — a sector the Left believes it should have a monopoly over.

It is similar to the special brand of hate the Left reserves for Clarence Thomas, Matt Sanchez, Abigail Thernstrom, etc. — anyone who the Left believes has left their plantation. It is the politico-religious hatred reserved for the heretic.

  20. Comment by Ric Locke on 8/7 @ 11:33 pm #

It is the politico-religious hatred reserved for the heretic.

With all due respect, a terminology quibble, Karl. Not heretic: apostate.

Someone who leaves another faith and joins yours is a convert. Someone who leaves your faith and joins another is an apostate. It is the religious equivalent of treason. A heretic is somebody who claims to continue in the True Faith but teaches something different. Joe Lieberman is a heretic (and was drummed out of the Church for it). Jeff is an apostate.

Apostasy is the hardest test of True Believers. A heretic may simply be somebody who misunderstands the Teachings. An apostate has heard and understood the Word — and left anyway. What went wrong? Most horrifying, could it happen to me? My kids?

As I’ve said before, the attitude is at the root of Bush Derangement Syndrome. According to his heritage and upbringing, George Bush ought to be a minor scion of the Blue State Liberaloid Establishment, indistinguishable from John Kerry without chemical analysis. For God’s sake, his mother’s a Pierce (as in Franklin). But instead of following the One True Way he was somehow induced, programmed like a Moonie, to go off with those awful cowboys, and he acts like he enjoys it. Inexplicable. Chilling, horrifying. It could happen again! Avert! Avert! Kill the infidel!

    Regards,
    Ric

How very revealing. I’d say that adding timmy’s “self-loating narciss[ism]” projection with Madame Hillary’s “compassionate misanthrop[y]” actually gives a startlingly accurate summation of the modern Leftist mindset. So much of history explained in two little oxymorons.

TW: accused first. Did not! I’m the one doing the accusing around here.

  23. Comment by Slartibartfast on 8/8 @ 4:56 am #

Just in case you think timmah is bad, our former friend alphie (along with compatriot Sematicleo) is badgering Patterico about…something or other. Seems to be along the lines of: sure, Beauchamp lied, but Sanchez is a gay porn star.

It’s always difficult to tell what the point is, with either of those two. Both at the same time is pointlessness, squared.

  24. Comment by Slartibartfast on 8/8 @ 5:03 am #

I mean, at one point in that thread, alphie attempts to make the point (At least, that’s how it appears. Since alphie never, ever actually makes his point, it’s hard to say for sure.) that since a soldier in Kuwait is getting combat pay, that Scott Beauchamp could in fact be writing from the point of view of a soldier experiencing PTSD. Or something like that.

I think if timmah winds up on that thread, it might implode from sheer density of stupidity.

    TW: man’s coating.

  25. Comment by Slartibartfast on 8/8 @ 5:10 am #

Hmmm…bad link, I guess. Sentence should have read something like “alphie tries to make the point that since Scott Beauchamp was getting combat pay in Kuwait, he could have been writing accurately about combat-stress-induced coarsening from firsthand experience.

Or something like that. With a straight face, possibly.

I’m working on developing the dimmill even as I speak, McGehee. If I can only keep track of alphie’s whereabouts long enough to work it through initial testing…

Unrelated, do you think Sanchez is being attacked because he’s gay, because he’s done pornography, or some evil combination of the two? Is he supposed to be a liar because he’s gay, or because he’s had sex on film? And since what he’s had to say is pretty much redundant with what the military has had to say, why does it even matter if he’s a gay liar, or a having-sex-on-film liar?

    timb’s mea culpa.

All that self-importance didn’t bode well for it, even at the time. The protein wisdom shoals tear our the bottoms of that kind of arrogance.

Something seems to have happened to alphie. He was fairly inoffensive here, but the few times I have seen his latest at Patterico or Jules Crittenden’s sites – whooo. He has devolved to accusing the US of genocide in Iraq, stopped slightly short of wishing me death in upcoming deployment, etc.

Whilst goofy and unserious, he wasn’t so bitter, angry and hateful before.

  36. Comment by Rob Crawford on 8/8 @ 7:30 am #

Whilst goofy and unserious, he wasn’t so bitter, angry and hateful before.

Sure he was. He just had it under control.

  37. Comment by Obstreperous Infidel on 8/8 @ 8:08 am #

Gotta agree with JD on that one. The alphoid always had that shit in him, he just held it back, for whatever reason. I think he knew that being at Jeff’s place (I suspect even alphie respected Jeff’s rhetoric and intelligence) he needed to restrain himself. Unseriousness and empty rhetoric is all he used. But once he was sent packing, I think, not much unlike timmah, he said “the fuck with it” and unleashed the toothless hounds of war that is his arsenal. Just nod and laugh at alphie and timmah.

  38. Comment by Obstreperous Infidel on 8/8 @ 8:09 am #

Sorry, I was agreeing with Rob. I am sure I have agreed with JD many times before, though.

  39. Comment by BJTexs on 8/8 @ 8:12 am #

Well, Dr Steve, I guess I’m in the same boat as you. I have a reputation for being the peacemaker amongst my conservative friends. I can’t help responding to some sense of self reflection when offered.

Unfortunately, timmah, heet and semi-concious share the same affliction: overwhelming bitterness. It infuses almost everything they write and corrupts (in tim’s case add “ultimately”)any chance of extended intellectual give and take. I’ve written before about Progressive/Liberal doctrine coalescing into a reasonable reflection of Evangelical Christianity, complete with revival meetings and public calls for all repent from the wicked ways asa defined by the leftist dogma.

(See: http://proteinwisdom.com/?p=9049 and pardom my HTML stupidity.)

I’m beginning to realise that I’ve left out the element of bitterness in this equation. The “god breathed” doctrine of many liberal/progressive policy positions is tied for some on the left to an overwhelmingly righteous frustration with those who haven’t chugged the kool aide. Their anger at this heresy (right, Mr. Locke?) seems to shut down any semblance of nuance or discourse, resulting in precisely the sort of rant that tim dumped on Jeff.

I’ll have to change the name to The First Church of the Progressive Misery Pimage: Bitterly.

This is why I’m on a campaign to deconstruct “phobia” terms from policy or politcal discourse. I don’t need angry, bitter leftists psychoanalyzing my positions based upon their own thinly grasped assumptions.

  40. Comment by SarahW on 8/8 @ 8:30 am #

Is it not plain what the COCK OF LIES defense signifies?

It is being employed to show the bad faith of anyone questioning STBeauchamp. It is lefty cannon that Sanchez would ordinarily be immediately discredited and discounted among the right as having a bad, unreliable character by virtue of his sexual deviancy and/or his checkered, seedy past where he performed deviant sex on camera in exchange for very, very filthy lucre.
    It is the perfect weapon.

Either the source of the damaging information suddenly become worthless and suspect, or you have called out your opponents as obvious cheaters,

Just as, in a childish game of cops and robbers, where the finger pistol has been employed with a clear line of sight and the target refuses to fall down and take his fake death like a man (claiming some sort of finger-bullet immunity in violation of unwritten but clearly understood rules of the game), the target is acting in bad faith and is a cheater.

If Ace or Patterico or Jeff or any other right-wing troglodyte refuses to say “Auggh, you got us”, by virtue of the gayness of Sanchez, clearly they are abandoning priniciple in favor of the cheap win.
    COCK !

  41. Comment by Ric Locke on 8/8 @ 8:30 am #

What you want to visualize when dealing with alphie, timb, Semanticleo, et al, is fresh-faced young people, in painfully neat cheap suits with properly-knotted ties despite the heat, walking through the neighborhood with a briefcase full of tracts, occasionally knocking on doors and offering to deliver the occupants from Evil by teaching the Truth. Missionaries. The next time LDS or Jehovah’s Witnesses come by, invite them in for a chat. The similarities will become obvious.

Like any other group of people some are less intelligent than others, but “stupid” is the wrong concept. What you are dealing with is the special, frustrating purblindness of the reasonably intelligent person who believes — and is supported by the previous work of other Believers. It’s good practice (as well as an odd sort of generosity) to buttonhole one on the street, or call at the Kingdom Hall in a spare moment, and ask for some of the tracts. The logical holes can be surprisingly hard to spot, because most people aren’t accustomed to that style of argument. The logic, the reasoning, will be impeccable, impervious to challenge, because it’s been refined by multiple thinkers for literally millenia. What you have to do is drill down through the thicket and find the faulty premise, the invalid paradigm, the postulate that doesn’t describe this Universe. And when/if you do there is no use challenging them on it, because for them the premise is unshakable, the equivalent of gravity or the “laws” of thermodynamics. That’s what “belief” means.

Modern Leftist belief is a sort of mixture, less well-formed than some of the God-based faiths, but it is not for nothing that Marxism has been described as a Christian heresy. What Marx (or, more correctly, Hegel) did was to take the doctrine of the medieval Church and recast it in different words. If you go back and look at the words in the Book, Christ did not say that rich people were evil and were inevitably doomed to Hell; He said that rich people were busy and likely to forget, in the complex process of managing their wealth, the necessity to pay attention to God and what was needed for salvation. The Church distorted that into a doctrine that would allow them to extort valuta from rich people, and to keep the lid on the society they lived in by giving the poor a consolation prize; more importantly, they secured their own power by exploiting the envy and jealousy of the less well off to counterbalance the authority of the nobility. The Left took that system over wholesale, rephrasing it in different words to obscure the makers’ marks and serial numbers, in exactly the same way Constantine repurposed the structure evolved by the Roman Empire to manage their animist religion to form the Church in the first place.

What all that means is that the Left has two millenia of sophistry and Jesuitry to draw on in formulating their arguments, plus the diligent efforts of Soviet propagandists who put strenuous effort into recasting Church teachings into Marxist-Leninist terminology and adapting them to modern conditions. You cannot argue with them on any basis involving logic, consequentialism, or intent; they have a nearly-infinite number of fallbacks, all the way back to Augustine. If you’re going to address them at all, you have to do it on the basis of fundamentals, of paradigms and postulates, and accusing them of stupidity is not only wrong, it isn’t even on the same axis as the force needed to shift them.

    Regards,
    Ric

  44. Comment by BJTexs on 8/8 @ 9:18 am #

    Ric:

    That’s an interesting historical perspective.

So are we left to ponder the immaturity and stated bitterness as reserved for the unrepentant heretics that are conservatives? I agree with you about the “stupid” meme (an argument I have with a few of my best friends) but what constitutes the intellectual makeup of a True Believer™ who eshews dialogue to taunt, call names and declare your “doom?” Perhaps they are the liberal equivalent to “End Timers,” preaching that those pesky, unrepentant ‘thugs will be cast into the pit of historical irrelevance whilst the righteous will be raised up to the holy Nanny State with the divine task of handing out the goodies.

I suppose so! The left has never been shy about promoting apocalyptic visions as the result of policy (Ban the Bomb, Nuclear Winter, Better Red than Dead, Silent Spring.) One wonders if the historical purloining of Christian church doctrine included a careful reading of Apocolyptic Vision as a lever against their strategic “enemies.” Some anger can be found in the fringes of Christianity over heresies both real and imagined but real faith bitterness is pretty much marginalized to the extreme fringe (think Phelps) disavowed by the vast weight of congregants. This sort of grade school recess bitterness has been given wide report by the MSM and at least a backhanded acknowledgement by mainstream Democratic politicians.

What facinates me is that their Apocolyptic message today is almost entirely rooted in the lame-o AGW meme, where the faith based thinking is obvious and overt. National security issues related to Global Terrorism are being delibrately diminished as a sort of world ending threat to be replaced by another lame-o apocalyptic vision: Civil Liberties and the Shredding of the Constitution!

Perhaps the bitterness is rooted in their overwhelming disappointment that a 60’s style minirevoluttion has not materialized despite these dire threats to all things humanity. Either way, you teach me well, master Ric.

Just don’t make me snatch some stupid pebble…

Since they all belive that we are scared of teh gay, or just flaming homophobics, or repressed homosexuals, it boggles their mind when we do not go crazy when they point out that some conservative is gay. It simply does not compute for them.

“Perhaps the bitterness is rooted in their overwhelming disappointment that a 60’s style minirevoluttion has not materialized despite these dire threats to all things humanity.”

Perhaps it’s a bit deeper than that. Hegelian historicism rejected revelation at inception, proudly proclaiming Reason in the stead of a godhead. A little light theft from the terminology of natural science mixed with a heavy gruel of sophistry and – viola! – the “inexorable march” began. I believe that the level of bitterness that we see today stems in large part from the collapse of that “paradise on earth”, the USSR. Never mind that von Mises predicted it in 1926, his critique has been successfully ignored for over eighty years, it took the unescapable fact of collapse to start really letting the air out of the left’s square tires. We really can’t blame them for bitterness, hauling a stinking corpse around is bound to affect one’s outlook.

While this chestnut may work with 55+ academic geriatro-hippies how are we to explain the likes of timmah and the kos kiddies? I don’t think they’ve taken an in depth Hegelian position that fires the flames of bitterness. The immaturity of the attacks suggests a more narcissistic response to the rejection (both perceived and actual) of policy strategies that they hold as “settled truth.” How dare we question The Narrative™ and the troothiness that it contains?

I just don’t see the depth of thinking and/or scholarship that would allow me to raise the spectre of the “worker’s paradise.”

Of course, it could be because they are a bunch of addled, snobby brats…

It must be something about that name. Damn you Ballard and Locke. And Goldstein. You fuckers make me think, and learn. Damn you all to hell !

  51. Comment by Ric Locke on 8/8 @ 10:42 am #

BJ: You’re correct, of course, but what we’re really looking at is what might be termed “missionary fatigue”. Being continually contradicted, your faith challenged at its deepest roots, is extremely frustrating. That’s why the sects that do in-country missionary work restrict it to fairly short periods, and almost always to young people and/or recent converts. If they do it that way, it can be cast as a lesson in humility: people don’t agree with you, and even challenge you, but turn the other cheek. If it goes on too long, though, it’s just human nature that a reaction sets in, promoting bitterness and hatefulness. You’ll notice that that’s the way it works here. The occasional drive-by troll can be polite, even amusing, but those that persist always descend into poison.

The occasional apparent exception is extremely interesting. If you follow semanticleo, you will find that he/she/it occasionally emits some fairly vicious vitriol, then returns to something resembling an even keel. Apparently the charge builds and is released as sparks, then the process begins again.

I have long suspected that at least some of the Leftists employ a variant of the missionary system, assigning people to go forth and teach the infidel by trolling Rightist sites for a while, then giving it up. Those people are no problem, and are occasionally useful and instructive. It’s the free-lancers whose persistence becomes annoying (and counterproductive, as a rule).

Incidentally, as regards specifics pay attention to SarahW. She has the case of Sanchez down cold.

“While this chestnut may work with 55+ academic geriatro-hippies how are we to explain the likes of timmah and the kos kiddies?”

I think that’s where Matt Collin’s excellent rant against Boomers derives its justification. Timmah and the kos kiddies are getting their pap predigested from Boomer profs whom I seriusly doubt could themselves now engage in dialectical warfare based upon the shibboleths that they in turn had been fed by profs indoctrinated at a time when Uncle Joe’s paradise was still being extolled in the pages of the NYT. When the main point of your pitch is inexorable progress toward a preknown end and not only do the tracks get torn up but the big way station (and a lot of little way stations) get burned down, where can you turn?

The left has turned into Gertrude Stein’s Oakland and they really do “sense” it. Circumstance has extirpated the fraudulent “empirical proof” that Hegelian historicism is a path to anything but ruin and Timmuh and the kos kiddies are just echoing the rage of the profs charged with their indoctrination.

    At least, that’s my theory.

Ric – “missionary fatigue” – Is that when your arms get tired?

BJ – The Ric(k)’s come along and confirm exactly what we were talking about. Thanks guys. Back to my dictionary.

Sementicleo’s son joined the Marines? That had to be quite traumatic for her. Maybe that explains her inability to differentiate between pre- and post- over at Pattericos yesterday.

  56. Comment by Ric Locke on 8/8 @ 11:02 am #

Well, yeah, that’s part of it, Rick. But there’s something else at work.

Pacepa and the rest worked in a system that was at once highly regimented and extremely collegial. Everybody worked toward the same end, and ideas were freely exchanged and adapted, but nobody ever forgot that the folks along Nevskyy Prospekt were In Charge, or that they in turn had to either accommodate or evade the Politburo. That was extended to the fellow travelers and useful idiots they used as conduits for their propaganda; somebody who got off message was pretty quickly disciplined and brought into line. In effect, the Soviet propaganda machine served as governor and regulator (in the machinery sense) of the whole sprawling enterprise.

That regulation is gone. Even to the extent that the propaganda machine still exists it’s been discredited, not just from the fact of defeat but from the evident corruption of the revenants. What you’re seeing is the individual pieces of the machine revving up in the absence of any coordination, like a car motor with a broken throttle cable. Some centers are beginning to coalesce out of the chaos, but most of them don’t last long because they quickly run into conflict with the adjacent ones that either have competing considerations or are simply so chaotic as to spoil anything they come in contact with. The march of academia toward a reductio ad absurdum of egalitarian ideals is an example of the latter effect.

    Regards,
    Ric

    Ric,

Thanks for the explication. The “broken regulator” is a very useful metaphor for understanding the current incoherence on display by the left. I sure hope they don’t find a competent repairman…

  60. Comment by Jeff G. on 8/8 @ 12:01 pm #

Why repair it when you can just repackage it as a car with a progressive and independent-minded throttle?

tw: edited prudence. That thing’s scary sometimes.

  62. Comment by BJTexs on 8/8 @ 12:58 pm #

…but what we’re really looking at is what might be termed “missionary fatigue”. Being continually contradicted, your faith challenged at its deepest roots, is extremely frustrating.

That’s a great analogy. It also applies to those hyper evnagelicals who see themselves as “converters.” I’ve seen more than one of these proactive witnesses melt down when faced with a particularly willful or disrespectful subject.

So we’re back to the presentation of conclusions based upon “settled science” ideals as put forth by the academic class and upchucked into the impressionable minds. Once out of the university they are jolted by the lack of insularity in the outside world. Heck, even in Haight-Ashbury you might run into a conservative Asian! What has been drilled into them as revealed truth (those progressive systems that never quite got instituted correctly or were shamelessly derailed by pig capitalists and emotionally stunted ugly American CIA types as played by Matt Damon) is now challenged informally in their day to day life (by even their families!) or, worse still, is disreputed by actual blog sites dedicated to that purpose! The very strain of reading such heretical ignornace releases the righteous, enlightened anger for the cause of purity and troothiness. Of course, unlike those “theocrat” religious folk, their faith has been tested by men’s minds! Smart men! Men (and a few women) who have unlocked the keys of human existance and politcal systems through their study!

Thus the “phobia” diagnoses become buzzwords and conservatives aren’t even human anymore, being “a cancer” and “insane,” needing to be “marginalized” and “made irrelevent.” There is no humanity to consider, so anger, name calling, extreme bitterness for the greater good is perfectly reasonable.

After all, there are no humans here, least of all our host. He represents the institutionalized “intellectual cover” for the heretical message. He, of course, must be burned first, metaphorically speaking.

It’s why I try to go out of my way to be nice to SEK and cynn because they come by their views honestly and (most of the time) don’t seem to be chewing 6 penny galvinized nails while commenting.

    JD:

I saw that with semi-concious. That was some funny stuff! I guarantee you she knows the difference between “pre” and “post” now! heh

Timmy is so needy that he’d suck up to a guy who sees chocolate milk as a form of racist oppression.

Fuck timmy. He’s typical of the trolls here who I’ve put up with over the years. When they finally do enough to get kicked off — after months and months of using my bandwidth for their nonsense — they regard me with a hatred that is so incendiary that it makes their boxers smoke.

And you know what? I kinda dig that.
