… in the taste of movie audiences
The Blind Side nearly knocked off New Moon as the number one movie at the box office over the weekend. New Moon pulled in $42.5 million which was down a stunning but not unanticipated 70%. In comparison The Blind Side shot up over 17% from its opening weekend for $40.1 million. That puts it at $100 million in just nine days of release while New Moon has collected $230 million in the same time frame.
I reviewed The Blind Side here. It’s a film Frank Capra would have made if he were still alive.

Even though I am of a certain age, I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m an aficionada of true cinematic erotica. Unfortunately it does not exist in today’s offerings which can only be described as soft porn and even beyond that. [...]Erotica should be what arouses sensuality and sexual desire in the imagination. Pornography is a cheap substitute to genuine sensuality by replacing it with naked thrusts and bursts of faux gasps of passion. How trite compared to visions created in our minds stimulated by a simple touch, look or gesture.

I like the old movies where it takes them the whole time just to end up kissing. The tension is more interesting that the resolution.

Lamont: [wakes up, yells at girlfriend] “Why can’t you be more like Darleen!?”

Why do I get the feeling Lamont spends an inordinate amount of time sleeping on the sofa?
Comment by sdferr on 11/29 @ 6:09 pm #
“Why do I get the feeling …”
Was it the bar-b-que smears on his shirtfront, JD?

I took the little ones to go see Fantastic Mr. Fox. My wife and daughter went to <i<The Blind Side. I would have preferred to see the later, but Mr. Fox was actually pretty good too. I suppose if I were paranoid I could read a Obamakleptocracy theme in the behavior of certain characters, but I will let that go for now.

Darleen–I told them that it was highly recommended (based on your review) and they were not disappointed.

Sadly, I resemble all those remarks…

Ace has a short summation of Twighlight which shows why you should probably skip New Moon.

I have a BB-Q stain on my t-shirt right now.
And I’m not changing it.
Comment by Joe on 11/29 @ 6:23 pm #
Twightlight speeded up like a running Vampire or something.

B-B-Q and meat smoke infused clothing is Channel No. 5 for men. It let’s women know you are not some Axe wearing poser.

…”you should probably skip New Moon.”
Joe, your stock just dropped 20 pts for your above use of the word “probably”.
Comment by JD on 11/29 @ 6:30 pm #
Chanel No. 5 for men should have blood, mud, and sweat mixed in too.
Lamont – I am shocked, shocked I tell you, to hear that I was right ;-)

Lamont, I have an 11 year old girl who is tall for her age and wants to see that film with her girlfriends (they have all read the books). The use of “probably” is due to my wife suggesting it is better to gently steer the ship and pay attention than say “stay away from icebergs!” My wife is explaining to her that boys that stare and say the presence of a young lady that she “excites their blood” are the rule not the exception and are often not looking out for their date’s best interest.
Comment by cranky-d on 11/29 @ 8:06 pm #
That is a very gentle way of pointing out that boys are horndogs.

Streetcar Named Desire with Marlon Brando is a good example of the long-lamented sensuality. The film fairly perspires sensuality and sexual tension without being pornographic.
Shadowlands also works this way in some segments.
Human sensuality/sexuality is a proper subject for art, but if art is to serve it well, it must keep the treatment of the topic in the realm of the aesthetic, intellectual, and emotional. Once you “show it,” the limbic system kicks in and all those other considerations are obliterated.
That’s not art, that’s, well… something else. There’s a reason the “hard core” stuff needs to stay in the boudoir, and that’s because it becomes corrupted outside that context.
And that’s all I have to say on the subject.

Joe,
…there is so much I could say to that…(smartass and stupidly, without a friggin’ clue, because I don’t have an eleven year old girl).
Anywho. Vampires, werewolves, and weird sexual innuendo and whatnot, look on the bright side.
At least she’s reading books.
Comment by Lamontyoubigdummy on 11/29 @ 8:41 pm #
Too true dicentra.
And thank you.
Lamont: “I can’t help it baby! You were kinda “showing it” and my limbic system just kicked in out of nowhere.”
Awesome.
Comment by JD on 11/29 @ 9:01 pm #
We all know that there is something wrong with your limbic system, Lamont. Janeane Barfalot told us.
Comment by Lamontyoubigdummy on 11/29 @ 9:51 pm #
“Janeane Barfalot told us.”
Garofalo…
How did Jack Bauer not straight up murder her in last season’s opener?
I don’t care if she did anything.
It’s Janeane Garofalo.
She’s on my TV screen.
Just shoot her and be done with it.
Call it general principle.
There’s a law for that, right?

In Cats & Dogs, I kept waiting for the dog to maul her, or the cat to go all Pet Cemetary on her.

Ha! Ha! JD
You watched Cats & Dogs.
On purpose.
You’ve seen “New Moon” haven’t you?!

It was on a date, Lamont. And it worked.

My 10 year old son was right.
“DAD! That’s a GIRL’S movie!”
Ugh…
