I’m with The Anchoress — Dear God, please don’t let Obama channel his inner Chamberlain.
Steve Schippert over at Threats Watch keeps an eye on all those places I refer to as “guy sites” (well, they never have recipes) and he writes:
It comes to our attention that the MEMRI Blog highlights an article from the Saudi _al-Watan_ in Arabic that – according to an Afghan source – the United States is talking to the Taliban seeking to trade control of 5 provinces in exchange for the cessation of attacks on US bases. MEMRI summarizes:An Afghan source in Kabul reports that U.S. Ambassador in Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry is holding secret talks with Taliban elements headed by the movement’s foreign minister, Ahmad Mutawakil, at a secret location in Kabul. According to the source, the U.S. has offered the Taliban control of the Kandahar, Helmand, Oruzgan, Kunar and Nuristan provinces in return for a halt to the Taliban missile attacks on U.S. bases.
Kunar province borders the Khyber Pass region where the majority of US and NATO supplies pass enroute from Pakistan. And the4 remaining four provinces constitute fully the southern 25% of Afghanistan’s territory.
This, if true, is a disturbing development.
I’m speechless. Now I know why Barry won’t release his college transcripts…. he flunked history.

Personally, I am loathe to consider the terrible and lasting effects this would have on US foreign policy in that region and elsewhere. I heard this earlier this morning and must point out that it is as yet unconfirmed; it could simply be very public “pushback” against Petraeus’, McChrystal’s, and Gates’ calls for more troops, or laying the groundwork for Obama to send only token reinforcements.
Like I said, take a breath, say some prayers, and realize that this is unconfirmed…
But, I have noticed lately thye Obama administrations adoption of the Clintonia trial balloon technique of deciding courses of action when they are frozen in political indecision…
I’m hoping this is only another one of those…

How can Obama be Chamberlain and Hitler at the same time?
“I had never before heard him speak with such passion for peace nor so movingly and persuasively. Several times during his two-hour-long oration I found myself being carried away… What could be more reasonable — and convincing — than these words, spoken, I noted, in his beautifully modulated, low, resonant voice, his face, his eyes, his frown, his manner exuding sincerity as he recalled the history of the follies of warring mankind:
‘The blood shed on the European Continent in the course of the last three hundred years bears no proportion to the national results achieved. In the end France has remained France, Germany Germany, Poland Poland, and Italy Italy…The shedding of rivers of blood has not substantially altered their fundamental characters. If these nations had applied merely a fraction of their sacrifices to wiser purposes the success would certainly have been greater and more permanent.’

Slightly more than three months it will have taken to make a decision that had been understood to be in the offing more than a year ago, more than two years ago were we to go by Obama’s own presidential campaign rhetoric, not to say position. Disgraceful can hardly sum the man.

Under the potentially “Never mind!” category:
McClatchy is reporting that the decision was made last night to send 34,000 additional troops to Afghanistan starting early next year. Of concern is the expressed demand for “off ramps” suggesting an exit strategy if things don’t work out to the president’s liking. Ed Morrissy points out that any COIN strategy is dependent upon the locals believing that we’ll be there to protect them over a period of time. Such “off ramps” may not inspire that kind of confidence in our commitment.
We’ll see …

I see your point, sdferr, and I hope that LTC John and RTO Trainer will stop by to give their takes on this. I do think Ed raised a good point with the so-called “off ramps” though.
Why is this administration so hyped up about “political progress” in Afghanistan? Either there is a compelling national security issue or their isn’t. If so, then political progress be damned. I’m of the opinion that allowing the Taliban to reestablish themselves in Afghanistan would be the height of dishonor (they make those psychotic thugs in Burma look like Swedish socialists) and bad anti terrorism strategy. Any “solution” has to begin and end with a plan to eventually eliminate Afghanistan as a haven for terrorists in conjunction with continued support to Pakistan for the purpose of limiting havens in Waziristan.
I’m at a loss to conjure up a valid explanation as to why we are safer as a country if Afghanistan is abandoned or not prosecuted as fully as it should.

I work with a large number of black leftists, which made for a lively election as they bought the Hopenchange at wholesale; a great number of them have approached me since the election to express their regret that I seem to have been proved right when I called him an empty suit.
These are decidedly not Protein Wisdom readers, they are the true-believers, and even they realize what an expensive joke this administration is turning out to be.
So don’t begrudge Snowcone his bile and anger. At what he thought was the beginning of a golden age of communist ascendancy, he now must face the realization that what seemed to be the vehicle for that communist ascedancy (O!) is instead fueling a reaffirmation Constitutional principles by a majority of the Ameriacn people.
