It has become quite evident that the case for Anthropogenic Global Warming transmogrified from science to ideology and politics quite a while ago.
So, it may appear, for what constitutes “persistent vegetative state”
A man thought by doctors to be in a vegetative state for 23 years was actually conscious the whole time, it was revealed last night.Student Rom Houben was misdiagnosed after a car crash left him totally paralysed.
He had no way of letting experts, family or friends know he could hear every word they said.
‘I screamed, but there was nothing to hear,’ said Mr Houben, now 46.
Doctors used a range of coma tests, recognised worldwide, before reluctantly concluding that his consciousness was ‘extinct’.
But three years ago, new hi-tech scans showed his brain was still functioning almost completely normally. [...]
Dr Laureys’s new study claims that patients classed as in a vegetative state are often misdiagnosed.
‘Anyone who bears the stamp of “unconscious” just one time hardly ever gets rid of it again,’ he said. The doctor, who leads the Coma Science Group and Department of Neurology at Liege University Hospital, found Mr Houben’s brain was still working by using state-of-the-art imaging.
He plans to use the case to highlight what he considers may be similar examples around the world.
Which is going to be really inconvenient for these people:
Supporters of euthanasia and assisted suicide argue that people who have lain in persistent vegetative states for years should be given the opportunity to have crucial medical support withdrawn because of the ‘indignity’ of their condition.
Opportunity for whom?

As for global warming/climate change/al gore’s madoff plan…
Yes there is a man made component to CO2 and yes it has an impact on climate (albeit a lot smaller than Goracle would have you think).
No it is not the end of the world, regardless of Al Gore singing about melting polar caps–things are not as catastrophic as portrayed and the fact is we really cannot stop CO2 production right now. Even if the US dropped CO2 by 50% (devastating our economy), China and India would pick up the slack and exceed it.
Given all the other problems we have, throwing trillions at climate change is insane.
And oh btw a rising economy helps the environment.

meya, in case you missed it this occurred in England, under the UK’s fan-effin-tastic national health care that many in America want us to emulate, but are not willing to admit aloud due to the fact that they would then have to own it’s shortcomings as well…
Valiant attempt at snark, especially the Trumbo reference. Did RD suggest that part, or the devastating irony of capping damage awards combined it?
Comment by Joe on 11/23 @ 10:35 am #

This is all part of a confluence of events that even some of the true believers on the left are starting to sense is leading to disaster for Dems.
These AGW scam emails, the Orwellian ‘healthcare’ bill, the expensive suit taking up space in the Oval office, they are all symptomatic of a ruling class spinning out of control in a haze of fake money and mandates.
One by one they could be dealt with by the Government Approved Media, but this White House has proven to be a veritable factory for the production of bad policy. Even the circa 1973 New York Times and all three networks couldn’t cover-up for this level of incompetence.
(extended metaphor alert)
Some of the first class passengers (Et tu, Chris Matthews?) on the doomed Democrat ocean liner are beginning to notice the giant icebergs, but it seems the ship of state, and it’s crew of overpaid bureaucrats, has too much momentum. It is no longer a question of if the Good Ship Karl Marx sinks, it’s just a question of when they throw captain Obama to the sharks.
The only tragedy is that the American People are locked in steerage.
Comment by SDN on 11/23 @ 10:44 am #

Won’t we have to wait and see what sort of economy he generates? That is, how well does his forthcoming book do, how much economy can his doctors stir up on the heels of his case, how do the study grants flow, etc. At this point, these will all be close to quantifiable over time. Whereas, taken as a measure of economic damages from the day before he was hypothetically plug-pulled two years ago, say, to the day after, you’ld be left with a big fat zero, no?

Comment by dicentra on 11/23 @ 12:06 pm #
Yes there is a man-made component to CO2 and yes it has an impact on climate
What exactly is the impact, Sparky? Do you know, or are you just making “reasonable” consessions to the alarmists? Because of smoke being caused by fire and all? Because you can’t believe that so many scientists could be so blinkered?
A few months back, Richard Lindzen of MIT found out, through 20 years of measurement, that the more heat you have beneath the “blanket” of CO2, the more heat radiates into space. The amount of CO2 in the “blanket” doesn’t seem to matter much.
Which is exactly the opposite of what these East Anglia CRU pukes predicted.
Opposite. As in contrary to. As in the measurements don’t conform to the hypothesis.
Don’t give concessions where they’re not merited. This is a good example of where not to do that.

The ice in the Arctic Ocean is not static. It is not smooth like a hockey rink. It moves all the time. It buckles and piles up in places, while lees and areas of no ice open up, and then such areas close up again. Some areas never freeze due to currents and upswellings.
Has it gotten thinner? Well during a warming period I expect it would, just like during a colder period it would expect it to get thicker.

Oh, oh, I know! *Raises hand* Pick meeeee.
750 million years ago or so the whole planet was covered in ice. Some time after that, during the Time of the Dinosaurs, the planet was (probably, given the abundant life back then) warmer than it is now. Humans were not around to blame for either event.
There was a medieval warming period, that is documented. Also, we know people grew grapes in a region that will not longer support that during that warming period. We also know that it was colder in the U.S. in the 1700s than it is now. There weren’t enough people to really effect much of anything then.
And yet, somehow, we are to blame NOW for stuff that’s been going on just fine without us for as long as the planet has been here. Right.

I see from the bit quoted in #176 that Rilly Dumb has no response. As expected.
The problem here, NippleNut, SFAG, Rilly, et al is that even though you, personally, couldn’t understand this stuff even if it came in a Sesame Street edition, there are plenty of scientists and engineers who can.
An awful lot of them have been operating on the assumption that these guys were honest scientists.

Skate (SSN-578), surfaced at the North Pole, 17 March 1959.
Haha, right below this photo:
http://www.navsource.org/archives/08/0857815.jpg
“Three crewmembers of the Skate (SSN-578) checking the ice on deck while above the Arctic Circle in 1959.”
Not to mention this from the attached story: In the following months, Skate, as the first ship of her class, conducted various tests in the vicinity of her home port. In early March 1959, she again headed for the Arctic to pioneer operations during the period of extreme cold and maximum ice thickness. The submarine steamed 3,900 miles (6,300 km) under pack ice while surfacing through it ten times
The same year Bob tells us the arctic was “ice free.”
Comment by Slartibartfast on 11/23 @ 10:12 pm #

Y’know, if I’d said that I navigated the Northwest Passage in, for instance, 1939, most folks with half a brain (or more) wouldn’t take that to mean that the Northwest Passage was open every day in that year.
I’m sure that Bob didn’t mean to float (so to speak) the notion that all of the arctic circle was ice-free, even for a day. Because that would be kind of unreasonable. But I’d be sure and ask before making a few dozen comments arguing that point.
But that’s me. I tend to not have time to fuck around with the kind of trivial horseshit Snowy revels in.

Mr. Flacy,
You are correct; I didn’t make a very clear statement. I worked from an assumption that it would be understood that I didn’t mean ice-free for the entire year, but for short periods of time. That assertion was backed up by the links I posted. And for what it’s worth, I clarified that in # 198.
Still, I never mention 1959 at all, in any of my comments, although a few of my links referenced a large number of years.
I chose my wording poorly in a moment of haste, it muddled my precise meaning, but far from justifies snowcone’s sophistry.
