Pay it forward: The Blind Side [Darleen Click]

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. ~~ Galatians 6:9

There are no special effects, no cgi, no aliens, vampires or werewolves. The Blind Side is that other, old-fashioned (and often too rare) Hollywood movie: The character-driven story.

Based on the true story of Michael Oher, who went from a life fending for himself when he was seven years old, to graduating college with a degree and the now current right tackle for the Baltimore Ravens, the movie had to tread the fine line between sentimentality and treacle, between inspiration and manipulation.

And it succeeds. Wonderfully.

At 6′5″ and over 300 pounds, Oher (played by Quinton Aaron) is a reluctant and silent giant whose crack-addict mother taught him to just close his eyes to “the bad things”. Only by accidental circumstance does he find his way to Wingate Christian School (standing in for the real Briarcrest Christian School) where most of his teachers are, at first, annoyed at who ever allowed this kid with no skills, a GPA of 0.4 and who won’t talk into the school. It finally takes his science teacher who retrieves from the waste basket a balled-up note Oher has written to realize that he is not stupid, just unequipped.

In another moment of providence (that would be dismissed as unbelievable if it weren’t true), the Tuohy family (wealthy, white, conservative with two kids already at Wingate) drive past a shorts and t-shirt clad Oher on a freezing night. Sean Jr, who has already “chatted up” Big Mike at the school before, points him out to mom Leigh Anne (Sandra Bullock) who has her husband Sean (Tim McGraw) stop the car. She goes out to find out if Big Mike really has a place to stay for the night and, in a line that defines her character, husband Sean remarks to son, Sean Jr “SJ” — “I’ve seen that look before. Your mother is about to get her way.”

Sandra Bullock demonstrates her considerable acting chops defining Leigh Anne Tuohy as one of those exacting, nearly insufferable, female forces-of-nature who, when the chips are down, one couldn’t pick any better to have one’s back. She is a mama grizzly bear in a size four dress and when she stands up in the bleachers of a high school football game to tell some racist redneck behind her making cracks about Oher to “shut up or I’ll come up and make you shut up,” like the guy who blinks and closes his mouth, you believe her.

The movie contains so many great scenes, from the exasperated high school football coach who hangs up on Leigh Anne when she tries to call in a play from her cell phone to the tutor, Miss Sue (Kathy Bates) who the Tuohy’s have hired for Michael, who confesses apologetically to Leigh Anne that she’s a Democrat to the look on Leigh Anne’s face when Michael thanks her because he has never had a bed before.

And that really sums up the soul of this movie. For all the moments of gentle comedy and tense drama, it is about the people. This wasn’t checkbook charity or Oher being a “project” to score points. This is about people being open to the opportunity to pay it forward. To indulge in that random act of kindness just because such things are too rare in this world dominated by nihilism and cynicism.

One of Leigh Anne’s lunching-lady friends (who she later dumps) says “You are changing that boy’s life”. Leigh Anne answers, “No, he’s changing mine.”

Love is thicker than blood. It’s a great movie. See it.

I don’t think it was a sucker punch. I thought it was the usual “pass the buck” crap one gets in any bureaucracy.

    Thanks for the review Darleen.

So much toxic waste comes out of Hollywood these days that I pretty much gave up trying to sludge through it to find a single worthy movie out of hundreds of worthless ones.
I saw the commercial promos of this movie a while back and figured it was another liberal talking point about how someone was wronged by a evil conservative and well you know – the standard screenplay.

I may have to see it now.

I’m looking forward to seeing this film. In addition to holding Ravens season tickets, I lived in the DC area of Maryland for many years before moving to Long Island.

It looked like an uplifting and inspiring story; and demonstrates the value of the most dear kind of charity and love for your fellow man-giving of your time as well as your treasure…

I’m glad that movies like this are still made…

  6. Comment by happyfeet on 11/22 @ 7:15 pm #

sorry. I have a deep contempt for the Warner Bros. ones.

I will go to my quiet place.

  7. Comment by happyfeet on 11/22 @ 7:17 pm #

But if you think that if you make this movie a hit then the Warner Bros. ones will grow to respect you and think of you as an appreciative and lucrative audience, they won’t.

    They hate you.

when judging a book, the story is more important than the author and the author is more important than the publisher.

sorry, dear, you’re wrong. OUTLAWS use whatever means to get out their message. This is a good story, with good principles highlighting good people. And to use even a dirty socialist publisher to get that story out (and to make more possible for other stories like it to get out) is a good thing.

I’m not surprised. I haven’t read their review and I won’t. I’m sure of what it says – probably something a long the line of “so what if this is a true story, showing white people helping a black person is just wrong and reeks of racism” being totally clueless of how racist that show THEY are.

  32. Comment by broken_quanta on 11/22 @ 8:42 pm #

As a supplement to Darleen’s wonderful post, the story is told in more detail here.

Possible spoiler: Mike eventually chose his adoptive parents’ alma mater, Ole Miss, over…well, over just about every other school in the SEC. Last year, Scott and Leigh Anne Tuohy stood on the field with Big Mike on Senior Day in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. When they announced Mike, the house came down. Four hours after that, Mike stood in the end zone and held the Egg Bowl trophy over his head, and the house came down all over again. The two moments were the very best of college sports; this is why we watch, and why we care so much more about college than we do the pros.

With due respect to happyfeet, whose position I understand, this is a good and important story, and I’m glad to hear that it’s been made into a good movie. I myself haven’t seen it yet — you couldn’t get a ticket in Oxford this weekend.

I’m taking it on faith that Darleen’s summary is correct. I went to see “Pursuit of Happyness” with my older son. The message I got was “Once freed of a woman’s nagging and clear of her shrew-like behavior, a man can achieve anything.” Which wasn’t the *intended* message, I’m guessing. But it was there. There are tons more great scenes in the movie I didn’t want to spoil. It is a fine balance of a movie – enough heart and sports that it both men and women, boys and girls, will love it.

Funny, talking over with husband, we both found a certain irony in that the movies lately we’ve enjoyed that have that kind of heart have been made by Pixar (i.e. UP) and FINALLY here is a movie with humans that is in the same category.

Don’t get me wrong. I love a good crash-bang sci-fi or thriller as the next person. I’d like to see Avatar even if it looks like “Dances with Wolves” via blue aliens. But small gems like The Blind Side are what are going to be classics 50 years from now due to their timeless themes.

  41. Comment by happyfeet on 11/22 @ 9:46 pm #

I read the review at the link and part of the problem I have with it is the author also trends to the cynical idea that all this was pretext for the Tuohys. They didn’t “really” accept Oher as another son – becoming his legal guardians then making him an equal heir with their bio-kids – just a pet to feed their passion for college football.

In doing this review and after I saw the movie, I checked out several interviews of Oher and the Tuohys (one linked above) and this really is about [fate, karma, providence] bringing together people who need each other and improve each other.

The outraged Proggie can’t accept loving, sincere Tuohys because that shatters the racist cartoon in its head about white, wealthy, Republican, NRA membership, born-again Christians. The author hints at his disbelief because why would the Tuohys adopt Oher and not have another kid of their own?

Are the people who attack the Tuohys realize what they are saying about a grown, successful Oher who professes to this day his love and gratitude towards his family? That this black man is too stupid to realize it was just a sham?

One of my husband’s late uncles wasn’t real wealthy, but like the Tuohys somewhere along the way he (and his wife and their two bio kids) discovered they just had a lot of love to expand their family, and they adopted and fostered lots of physically and mentally challenged kids through the years. Kids, like Oher, who had been discarded as lost cases by society.

Bad things happen in life, but that doesn’t mean good things and good people are an impossibility.

  77. Comment by sdferr on 11/23 @ 9:45 am #

Bad, poor, inadequate human psychological descriptions don’t yield simplest explanations though BJT. The work to get to simplest (simplest because true) explanations hasn’t been completed as yet, so far as we can tell. People and their doings are way crazy complicated, it turns out, no matter what they may self-report.

hf: I second LTC John on “Band of Brothers.” Arguably the best mini-series ever produced (I haven’t seen “Adams” yet) and most certainly one of the best productions about war ever made.

I’m going to have to bite the bullet and get HBO. In addition to a big budget pilot being produced of “A Song of Fire and Ice” the same group that did “Band of Brothers” is taking their skills west for “The Pacific” a story about The Marines against the Japanese.

Saltlick–I read the review at the link and part of the problem I have with it is the author also trends to the cynical idea that all this was pretext for the Tuohys…

I mostly agree with your critique of that author, Darleen. I just thought it was an interesting take.

What the Tuohys did was wonderful, and having been a foster parent several times, I’d assume there were some very rough, trying times in their and Oher’s relationship. Those kids almost never completely escape the emotional damage of a blighted childhood and having them under your roof comes with a price.

Oher’s success is unusual, even for someone who got his providential “breaks.” Case in point is a couple of white Progs I know who adopted 2 crack babies about 20 years ago. Both kids are estranged from the parents annd have thrown away advantages similar to Oher’s. The father once told me about 50% of all such adopted kids eventually end up in jail. I hated the guy’s politics, but I felt sorry for his struggles with those kids. Their stories aren’t finished, so maybe they’ll be happy endings in their movies, too.

But bottom line is, I didn’t mean to diss the Tuohys by linking that site.
And I look forward to loving on Ms. Sandra’s on screen blonde.

  81. Comment by Joe on 11/23 @ 10:06 am #

BJTexs–The Pacific starts in March. Hopefully it captures what Band of Brothers did.

And Adams is very good. Go get the set at Costco, it is worth having around.

  82. Comment by BJTexs on 11/23 @ 10:12 am #

Salt Lick: I have very close friends who, due to a sterility issue, elected to adopt three brothers from substance abusing parents. they were never told and only found out much later that all three boys suffered from various stages of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Despite having plenty of resources and a loving commitment the adoption turned into a disaster. The oldest bot was a sexual deviant, the middle one became a heroin addict and the youngest couldn’t hold a job for more than six months, stole from his employers and has fathered two babies whom he has no chance of supporting.

Adoption is a wonderful gift and can be a great blessing but there are potential potholes on that highway.

I see the Progressive Sneering© is in full force with our troll. the scare quotes around “Christian” and “science” tell a particular tale of mindless derision and ideological centered intolerance.

    BJTexas

It would appear that Oher, through whatever chance it happened, escaped physical damage in utero. And his emotional problems were less about aggressiveness and more about avoidance of anything stressful.

Brain-damaged children – especially via substance abuse by moms – need to be carefully assessed before any kind of adoptive placement.

Unfortunately, too many public agencies want to place these kids without properly preparing either the kid or the adoptive parents.

True, Darleen. My friends spent thousands of dollars to finally pry the information out of the agency. Those kids spent years not getting the sort of treatment they needed … although in cases of F.A.S. treatments really don’t help in any significant way.

Thanks D, I saw if Friday night at a Cinema & Drafthouse. Had to set my beer down a couple of times for fear of getting a tear in it….Tim Mcgraw needs to keep practicing his “acting chops” although he didnt appear to be struggling when acting pleased while is arms were around Sandra….

I reluctantly went to this movie last night because my son wanted to see it.

I saw it yesterday and totally loved it. This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. Sandra Bullock did an excellent job playing Leigh Anne Tuohy and had some really memorable lines. I will go see this movie again (soon) and will buy the DVD when it comes out. It was a movie even a democrat might enjoy (JK… see the movie if you don’t get my comment). Lastly… Go Michael Oher, you’ve overcome struggles that have stopped many other people. I wish you all the best in your career and your life!!!

We weren’t put on this earth to entertain ourselves. That’s what mom said. She was a right proper outlaw I think.

I wish Sandra Bullock would pick me up and take me home. Especially in full-on fake-blonde MILF mode. daaaaaauuuuummmmm.

I thought the premise of the movie “Saving Private Ryan” was deeply flawed.Although the cinematography was excellent. However the title turned around would make a great title to a porno movie.

I got an invite from Ethan Hastert to go shoot birds if I give him money so he can run for office. My wife went to high school with Dennis but I’m not familiar with his son. I would like more than -vote for me I’m Denny Hasterts kid. Maybe somebody more conservative will show up.

I thought the beginning of Private Ryan was pretty good, the intensity of the beach landing and establishing a foothold. After that is was pretty much the same old WWII boilerplate.
