Who the hell can hear this statement …
Today we vote whether to even discuss one of the greatest issues of our generation – indeed, one of the greatest issues this body has ever face: whether this nation will finally guarantee its people the right to live free from the fear of illness and death, which can be prevented by decent health care for all.
… and not want to reach for the phone and call 911 and have Reid 5150′d?

This bill would be awesome for that purposes. Destroy America in a whirlwind of hopey-changey feelgood legislation! Horay Democrats! Fighting America for… er, I’m still not sure what it is they’re fighting FOR/b>, but I do know what they’re fighting against. Adulthood.
I wonder if they’ll ever figure out how much harm they’re going to do if they get their way. I (as a Mormon) look upon them and often think, “What a bunch of fanatics.” That should be saying something. I’m not sure what, but it’s saying something. Heh.

sdferr,
Sorry but I just saw you link to the weekly standard story about the shredding of the Tomcats at the boneyard. In truth, it kind of makes my skin crawl to hear it…
But it did my heart good to hear this said once again:
The good ol’ Tomcats were bad Muthas indeed, and while in the interim fighters such as the F/A-18 E/F super hornets have become much more manueverable, as a flat-out interceptor the F-14 couldn’t be beat…
Fast, Powerful, sporting impressive targeting systems and deadly standoff missiles; it was quite a machine…
When the decision was officially made to phase them out, in part to maximize the “peace dividend”, Grumman had been working on a project called the Super Tomcat 21; the upgraded airframe sported a better radar, full digital electronic instrument suite, greater fuel capacity and higher takeoff weight, and a new engine which would have provided vector thrust and super-cruise capability (cruise at supersonic speeds without afterburner-resulting in much greater unrefueled range). I can only imagine what capabilities the addition of modern systems would have provided…
The ‘Cat was one hell of a fighter, and I had no idea they were shredding them; last I heard they were staying at the boneyard. Seems like a short sighted decision to me…

Bob, I don’t know the Tomcat except by word-of-mouth, but my understanding is it is/was a nice airframe.
Super Hornet is a bit nicer than the C/D Hornet, and it’ll have some nicer targeting equipment, too. Well, it’ll have a nicer IRST; the air-to-ground targeting will continue to suck until such time as they decide to trash ATFLIR. That probably isn’t going to happen as long as there are folks around whose careers are invested in not declaring it a tragic bit of failure.
Comment by Bob Reed on 11/22 @ 6:33 pm #

Comment by sdferr on 11/22 @ 6:35 pm #
Though calming down a bit and thinking on it, perhaps a nomination of Chuck Hagel would be just the ticket for the Senate Republican’s to demonstrate that they have begun to regain their sanity — by steadfastly refusing to allow their imbecilic former colleague anywhere near the DoD?
Comment by geoffb on 11/22 @ 6:37 pm #
I was just following on from the logic trail that Robert Wright used in his Op_Ed piece.
If KSM uses “I blame BOOOOSH!” then we will know time travel is a reality in some minds.
That stinks about the F-14. You would think that the Left would behave more Soviet and never throw any usable weapons system away. Just store them for that rainy day.
Comment by sdferr on 11/22 @ 6:40 pm #
Heh, me too geoffb, though in trying to force it to be humorous it looks like I hit the fail button again. ;-)
Comment by Bob Reed on 11/22 @ 6:44 pm #
Slart,
E/F Superhornet has larger wing area, and larger elevator and rudder areas for greater control authority; although the Hornet variants aren’t as fast as the Tomcats, they are much more nimble at dogfighting speeds (approx 0.80 Mach). Now the F-14 wasn’t simply a missile at high speeds; we could maneuver at 2.3+ Mach. But the smallest radius turns resulted in high G forces at that incredible speed…
My understanding is that the IR targeting systems are tits, and so you’re assessment of a similar ground targeting method must be career prolonging on someone’s part!
Comment by geoffb on 11/22 @ 6:45 pm #

Comment by SporkLift Driver on 11/22 @ 9:38 pm #
Shame about the Tomcats they would make nice bomber or cruise missile interceptors. It has always struck me as stupid being in a hurry to scrap old equipment. If we got in a hot war with a major power and needed the numbers I suspect we could bring a few hundred pilots out of retirement or even train new ones quicker than we could crank out a hundred new airframes
Comment by geoffb on 11/23 @ 12:07 am #
When I wrote in #57 that the KSM trial would be a Chicago 7 remake I didn’t realize/remember that the “Center for Constitutional Rights” that has steered all the legal cases that have led to this end was the group that defended the Chicago 7, formerly 8, back in 1972. There is another weird twist.
In 1998 the CCR absorbed another left legal group, The “National Emergency Civil Liberties Committee” founded in 1951 by, among others, I.F.Stone. Counsel to the NECLC was Leonard Boudin father of Kathy Boudin, Weather Underground member who was convicted in the 1981 Brinks robbery. Her son Chesa Boudin was adopted by Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn. Which closes the circle right back to the White House.
The elite left where everybody knows everybody. A powerful little village hidden away because it is spread out physically but is quite tightly bound together ideologically.
Comment by JD on 11/23 @ 7:29 am #
Yup, just make them legal, huh, twit?
Comment by geoffb on 11/23 @ 9:35 am #
It’s the same reasoning as in the link sdferr put up in #58.
Definitions cause all the troubles, not actions. If you define someone as being (A) then they will of course do what (A) does. Magic! Spells woven of words work see.
But only if humans do them. Otherwise “Let there be light” would come into play and the Left allows no other God to come before themselves.
Comment by JD on 11/23 @ 9:57 am #
