Landrieu Bought Off; It’s Down to Lincoln. [JHoward]

Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) said Friday night that she’s “leaning towards” voting to start debate on the health care bill – which would leave Democrats just a single vote shy of clearing a critical test for the reform package on Saturday.

Asked outside the Capitol if she’s made up her mind on starting the debate, Landrieu said she planned to announce her intentions Saturday but told POLITICO, “I’m leaning towards it.”

That would mean Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s hopes for a successful vote hinge on one senator: Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.), who remained mum about her intentions as the clock ticked down to the critical vote.

  2. Comment by Joe on 11/20 @ 8:46 pm #

They will sweeten the pot to give Lincoln cover for a vote that will be very unpopular at home. She might lose reelection over it if the Dems do not dump all the pigs in Iowa on Arkansas.

Blanche should ask for a cool quarter bil. Either that or a placement with a K street firm.

She’s such a whore. Such a god damned whore. Our entire Senate is whores but she’s a particularly scuzzy one I think. You know who else is a whore is Dede Scozzafava and Meghan’s coward daddy.

There’s more but it’s been a long day.

Most blatant bribe in political history. I hope to god she turns it down ultimately.

How is it not a major news story that a waffling senator was given a 100 million dollars of our tax money to vote for said piece of legislation? How is it not a major news story that the bills gettin passed now are so unpopular that they need to be passed in the dead of night on a saturday?
How is it not a major news story that the President is making up congressional districts where he supposedly creates jobs?
How is it not a major news story that the President supposedly doesn’t know that terrorists are taken out of his custody and tried in the United States?

  11. Comment by Mr. Pink on 11/20 @ 9:00 pm #

Yeah I am pretty pissed. It is insulting to my intelligence to be told a prisoner of the military can be taken by the Justice Department, overturning 200 years of precedent, and the President would not know about it. Especially adding in that even the blind ahole Paterson admits he was knew of this 6 months ago.

  12. Comment by Big D on 11/20 @ 9:04 pm #

Clearly Mr Pink is racist as there is no rational way to oppose the One!

Ha. You must be kidding. This is the Senator who’s first bid on the heels of Katrina was $200 Billion. Gimme, she said. Gimme right now, gimme gimme gimme. Back in the days before people lightly thought in terms of trillions of dollars, back two years before a “stimulus” could be passed out at a mere $60 Billion. A paltry $100 Million is found money to this pos.

  14. Comment by Mr. Pink on 11/20 @ 9:09 pm #

How can you not be pissed being lied to directly to your face? Really, they are basically telling blatant lies and daring people to disagree. The press doesn’t call them on it cept in Opinion pieces. Their cultists clap and applaud. Rational people are insulted.

  15. Comment by No one you know on 11/20 @ 9:12 pm #

Turns out there really are no “moderate” Dems. They are all statist dirt bags. Who’d've thunk it?

  16. Comment by Mr. Pink on 11/20 @ 9:12 pm #

I wonder what would have happened to Bush if when he had tried to reform SS he had blatantly lied, gave no people time to read the bills, had votes at 12 pm on saturdays, and paid off Senators with amendments in the bill that only apply to their state? Seriously am I supposed to believe that the press and my TV would treat that as just normal politics? Or would they have blasted that on the front page? For fucks sake this is insulting to me personally. They have the votes now to do this bullshit, why lie to me?

  17. Comment by Mr. Pink on 11/20 @ 9:15 pm #

They are telling everyone in this country that a new entitlement program giving insurance to millions of people will reduce the deficit. REDUCE THE DEFICIT????
This would be like if JFK said he wanted to launch a space program to put a man on the moon and it would not only not cost a dime but would reduce government spending.

  19. Comment by Big D on 11/20 @ 9:18 pm #

Why lie to you, Pink? Because they can.

We have all known for a long time that they are whores. Mary simply confirmed it.

What was that cliche that used to be said about the Clinton years? Something like “a vacation from history” wasn’t it? Something similar is coming regarding the election of Barry Obama to the presidency, though I think it’ll read more like a vacation from sanity than history.

This from the Hot Air piece is a small ray of hope.

In fact, Reid may have to have a couple of Republicans even if his caucus holds firm. As the Hill reports, Reid can’t count on getting everyone into the chamber for this vote. Max Baucus, who helped put together a different version of the bill, left DC this week to be with his seriously-ill mother. Robert Byrd has been able to attend the Senate only occasionally this year due to his own health problems. Five other Senate Democrats had already arranged a “codel’ — an official travel event — and may not be able to stay in town.

Which should provide a spectacle of ACORN and SEIU members kidnapping Democrat Senators and using whips to drive them screaming onto the floor of the Senate. Prime CSPAN viewing.

I wonder how much Lincoln and Bayh are going to cost ?

If the bidding goes too high look to see Senators, who were yes votes, to move to get in on the action. DiFi and Boxer could likely get a complete California bailout by playing hardball. A hundred million here, a hundred billion there, pretty soon you’re getting into serious change for a hope.

“I said to myself very early on, even when I started running for office, I don’t want to be making decisions based on getting re-elected, because I think the challenges that America faces right now are so significant,”

This is reinforced when he says stuff like “You are destroying my presidency!!”

  58. Comment by sdferr on 11/21 @ 7:53 am #

He also said early on, even before he started running for office, though he said it only to himself:

“I don’t mind lying through my teeth in every utterance I make in public, seeing as how I’ve gotten away with just such a policeh this far and no-one’s called me on it.”

Remember when he said, “Well, I can hear you. And the world can hear you. And pretty soon the people who tore down these buildings are going to hear from us.” Al? That was great wasn’t it?

  61. Comment by Seth on 11/21 @ 8:19 am #

Even if it’s not passed now, expect it to come back like a bad penny. A penny that costs a couple of trillion. And really, I don’t dare hope there aren’t a few Republicans that can’t be bought. The Maine senators are usually good for that. This isn’t a short game move by the Democrats, this is about creating a reliable, dependent, and Democrat caste. The kind of thing that makes elections a mere formality.

So whether it passes or not, 2010 needs be a year of political vengance. This whole year has stunk to high heaven.

  62. Comment by Danger on 11/21 @ 8:20 am #

    sdferr,

Well of course because he has always said that; That George W. Bush guy was merely repeating the message.

  63. Comment by SporkLift Driver on 11/21 @ 5:42 pm #

I seem to remember getting this idea from the paltry civics I received in school that the Senate voted on the legislation that came out of the House. Now I know that this was only me misunderstanding what wasn’t being taught very well by teachers who spent much more time telling us how much more wonderfuller the Soviet, Chinese, Cuban, North Vietnamese and Kalihari Bushmen systems were than actually teaching the subject. But I think this system of having the Senate vote on the House bill as written makes much more sense than this Senate version gayness. Think about it, how much bad legislation makes it through the Senate because senators get bought off the way Landrieu was? Does larding up bills with bribes to senators make for better legislation? Think of all the time spent duplicating the efforts of the House, wouldn’t it be better spent examining and debating and coming to a better decision? Wouldn’t that be a better use of “The World’s Greatest Deliberative Body’s” time?

If things go as badly as they might and The Republic is torn down, and if we get luckier than we have any right to expect and we get a chance to rebuild it. Wouldn’t that be a good idea for an improvement the next time around? A Senate that was limited to voting on the legislation that came out of the House as written would IMHO better serve the original intent of having a two house system. It would also attract a better class of people, could you imagine a Senator Byrd who couldn’t name half his state after himself?

  64. Comment by SporkLift Driver on 11/21 @ 5:49 pm #

Slightly OT but Mr. Pink touched on it.

Picking up on a story from ABC News about stimulus jobs created in phantom congressional districts, I found jobs/awards reported for the following Illinois “districts”: 0, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 28th, 33rd, 34th, 42nd, 44th, 53rd, and 59th. Or as Stephen Colbert would say, “the fightin’ 59th.” Too bad Colbert couldn’t “better know these districts,” because they don’t exist. Notes the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, “the federal government is attributing about $6.5 million in stimulus spending to non-existent congressional districts in Illinois.”

Don’t know if the federal government is actually cutting checks to non-existent congressional districts or not, but if so who’s cashing them?

Don’t know but could be huge I think.
