Climategate. [JHoward]

James Delingpole has a summary at the Telegraph.

If you own any shares in alternative energy companies I should start dumping them NOW.

When you read some of those files – including 1079 emails and 72 documents – you realise just why the boffins at Hadley CRU might have preferred to keep them confidential.

That hacker is a heroic person the like of which seems to be very rare in our little country these days.

And, perhaps most reprehensibly, a long series of communications discussing how best to squeeze dissenting scientists out of the peer review process.

Behold the little Eichmanns of the scientific community.

I love the taste of schadenfreude in the morning…It smells like…the end of the AGW connivance and man/bear/pig’s Waterloo…

It doesn’t get any better than this. And, what do you want to bet that any time this prooof is mentioned, enviro-nazi’s will go off on the eeeeevollls of “hacking” into their system as opposed to admitting any fraud or intent of the same…

  4. Comment by Joe on 11/20 @ 10:14 am #

Are you telling me that these climate change folks lie?

    This never gets old.

Alright. This made me laugh. Schadenfreude tastes great for breakfast.

Somewheres Down Under, Tim Blair and Andrew Bolt are smiling.

Me too (but up here in America as opposed to down in Oz).

One reaction I hope to see is that of, in the words of happyfeet, the hoochie from the Weather Channel (Heidi Cullen) who wanted the AMS Seal of Approval removed from any TV weather person who dared deny AGW.

Or David Roberts, last seen on “The Climate Code” demanding Nuremburg type trials for “Global Warming deniers”.

  8. Comment by Raving Moonbats R Us on 11/20 @ 10:30 am #

It’s all lies! Lies, I tell you. AGW is real and we’re all doomed! Unless we stop generating CO2 yesterday, all the animals and insects and plants will die!

I guess some people will die too, so it isn’t all bad, but still… .

Besides, it was for your own good. You’re all too stupid and clingy with your guns and religion to understand Teh Truth! So what if we had to lie a little?

Anyway, only FauxNewz will report this stuff. We otherwise own the MSM. So only you wingers will ever see it.

I’m thinking some of this might be BS. It is too good to be true.
I’ts all too easy and highly-scripted with the only element that’s missing is a Snidely Whiplash chuckling in an e-mail, “It’s working! My fiendish plan is working!”

This is like living through the weirdest movie ever. Scroll down the front page of pw, and ask yourself how much of this reality (and attempts to approximate such) you’d have thought remotely plausible 15 years ago.

    We need an intermission.

  23. Comment by mcgruder on 11/20 @ 10:52 am #

    BJT and JHO,
I hear and respect you. This wouldnt be the first time I’m wrong, Lord knows.

Let me just say this: I have seen dozens–and I do mean north of 12—legal cases launched with some truly titillating and apparently damning E-mail and electronic discovery–only to see an easy 50% sink like the proverbial lead zeppelin. What seems balls out damning often has some more context that was not disclosed or not revealed. Full disclosure: I have often written glowingly of these things, only to be proved less than judicious later. I have learned the hard way is what i am trying to say.

I agree it LOOKS bad. We shall see. I may well be wrong here.

  24. Comment by Pablo on 11/20 @ 10:54 am #

Ah, and just in time to validate my weird movie allegory, in walks the ball-gagged gimp.

  25. Comment by mcgruder on 11/20 @ 10:55 am #

In the future, people will study Snocone’s attempt to redirect this into a stock market thread and be greatly amused. Also, people in the present will laugh too.

  26. Comment by Salt Lick on 11/20 @ 10:56 am #

I’m thinking some of this might be BS. It is too good to be true.

I worked among university “scientists” for 20 years and this sounds exactly like the kind of crap they’d do. Even relatively well-informed people don’t realize how much science has been twisted to fit social agendas. Have a talk with Larry Summers if you don’t believe me.

  27. Comment by JD on 11/20 @ 10:58 am #

This would be even more fun if SemenKKKleo were here to talk about her windmill, and regale us with stories about her PRE-traumatic stress disorder.

  28. Comment by JHo on 11/20 @ 11:00 am #

mcgruder, assuming this is genuine data, and assuming it was illegally obtained, and without knowing law — international, British, or otherwise — do you have any idea how this would stand up to scrutiny?

The jacked US press notwithstanding, of course.

  29. Comment by BJTexs on 11/20 @ 11:00 am #

mcgruder: I think you are being prudent and it doesn’t hurt to continue to follow the story and see how it plays out. If it turns out that there is information withheld that would present a different picture then we should expect the outed to scream like toy denied two year olds. Absent of that (perhaps a forlorn hope that the issue will magically drift away) we’ll know soon enough.

I second tha call for an intermission Pablo; but funny thing is Obama’s not taking my calls these days…

I can only imagine the scene:

Secretary: Mr. President, you have a call on line 2.
The Won!: Uhh, who, uhh, is it, Mabel..?
Secretary: I’m not sure, sir, but it sounds wingerish to me; he wants to know about Afghanistan, oh and jobs too sir…
The Won!: How can you be sure he’s a winger, Mabel..?
    Secretary: Well, sir, he’s…polite.
    The Won: Take a message…

  35. Comment by BJTexs on 11/20 @ 11:27 am #

Secretary: Um … sir? you have an … ah … interesting call in line 3.
The Won: Uh Uh Mabel? What do you, uh, mean by, uh, interesting?
Secretary: Well, sir he um … I don’t know if I should say this …
The Won: Just spit it out, uh, Mabel.
Secretary: Well he, uh, asked to speak to … uh … sir?
    The Won: What, Mabel!?!?
Secretary: What is a “mendouchious twatwaffle?”
    The Won: …
The Won: Call the Secret Service.

Unless we stop generating CO2 yesterday, all the animals and insects and plants will die!

I suspect even the most strident AGW booster knows that to be false, and that it’s also impossible to stop generating CO2. They don’t want that…what they want is political control over the generation of CO2, something very different, with benefits accruing to a certain political class.

  37. Comment by JD on 11/20 @ 11:37 am #

BJ – I am pretty sure that it is spelled mendoucheous ;-). And I am pretty sure they are not taking my calls.

  42. Comment by mcgruder on 11/20 @ 12:09 pm #

JHo, I have been pondering this as well.
The press has obviously fallen hook-line-sinker for the AGW camp’s line, but this does change the playing field. My guess is that it gets picked up bit-by-bit. It doesnt appear to do much credit to the AGW camp.

The media’s cover will be the ‘net….writing about the emails as documents themselves is difficult, given they were clearly stolen (which is all hacking is, pure and simple), but writing about the internet’s take on it, blog v. blog (think rathergate) is the story.

we can also imagine a major blowback for this think-tank. They get carried out.

  43. Comment by Kresh on 11/20 @ 12:12 pm #

Hmm. I’m with McGruder. Caution, until proven authentic. Remember, counter-intelligence is a powerful weapon, and seeing as how they own the media, any mis-steps on our part will only be magnified until even Snowdouche can comprehend that something happened. Not that he’ll understand it, but he’ll know that those reichwingnutterz got all atwitter Dan Rather-style over something.

Let’s be sure it’s real. THEN we’ll stomp their tiny dicks into the dirt.

I’m thinking that, much the same way a whistleblower is treated when the scandal involves Dems, the focus of this story will be on the hacker and the illegalities of his behavior.

  45. Comment by geoffb on 11/20 @ 12:24 pm #

Several things. I believe the emails have all their header info which should help in verifying them.

The large number of emails would suggest it would be hard to fake them all, however slipping in a few damning fakes would seem possible.

It was mentioned that many of the emails come from US University email accounts and that that may make them subject to FOIA requests. Is this true?

  46. Comment by Bob Reed on 11/20 @ 12:27 pm #

That’s a great dialogue BJT, I can see them sending the Secret Service to JD’s place, and calling for back-up once they get a load of the ma deuce and the concertina wire…

“You men better bring in the APC, I’m getting that Ruby Ridge feeling all over again!”

  47. Comment by SBP on 11/20 @ 12:27 pm #

geoffb, it’s true. As I understand it, there are also some emails in the set that discuss how best to stonewall FOIA requests.

Do we know it’s a hacker? I think that’s an unfounded assumption at this point. Despite CRU’s use of the term “hacked” my impression is that they’ve just been completely blindsided by this and don’t have a clue what happened.

Could be a disgruntled employee/whistleblower. Or it could be like Zoe Lofgren’s cyber-hacking in which a dipshit staffer left classified material available to a file sharing network.

I am an AGW skeptic, of an increasingly avowed nature, but something might be off here. I counsel caution.

Of course, mcgruder, but how else would a real scientist or a Classical Liberal/fill-in-blank proceed?

I already know that the elite “Climate Scientists” are not doing real Science, and instead are involved in what is no more than a gigantic propaganda op. – so that something like what these files so far seem to contain or might portend at this point must be happening.

But that does not prove that the files are authentic, which I’m pretty sure nearly everyone here knows anyway.

I don’t even know yet if the files are real, were actually hacked, or if what they contain is authentic, critically damning material that goes beyond what the “Climate Scientists” have already authentically demonstrated for anyone who wants to, to see.

There’s got to be something to it all, Slart. Owing to its blinding effect on the unwashed, probably the left hides it.

I’m working on a vast conspiracy theory involving hidden star gates and ancient clicky tumbler thingies that reveal hidden realms of mystery when you dial em in just so. From a Tim Blair update, the “hacked” email server was at the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit (CRU), not the Hadley Climatic Research Centre – which, interestingly, had their Ministry of Defence funding cut. Hmmm.

  62. Comment by Pablo on 11/20 @ 1:31 pm #

And while confirming the “hack” the Beeb makes it clear that they don’t know what happened.

A university spokesman confirmed the email system had been hacked and that information was taken and published without permission.

An investigation was underway and the police had been informed, he added.

“We are aware that information from a server used for research information in one area of the university has been made available on public websites,” the spokesman stated.

“Because of the volume of this information we cannot currently confirm that all of this material is genuine.

“This information has been obtained and published without our permission and we took immediate action to remove the server in question from operation.

“We are undertaking a thorough internal investigation and we have involved the police in this enquiry.”

Maybe they don’t know what “hacked” means. Or maybe they don’t care.

The e-mails involve Michael Mann, who ranks second only to James Hanson in the AGW crime family.

As for whether the files are real, the deafining silence over at realclimate.org means that everyone got the message to clam up until the real damage-control team can swing into operation.

Also, the level of detail in the e-mails (naming specific series and the ways to use them to fraudulent ends) might bespeak authenticity. You’d have to be Steve McIntyre or a faithful reader of climateaudit.org who understands all of the science to fake such docs.

Me, I’m fairly sure Glenn Beck did it.

Polar Bear 2: Would you cut it out with the CRU email crap!
    Polar Bear 1: Well…it’s true.
Polar Bear 2: You need an email to tell you this whole AGW shit was all about power and money?
Polar Bear 1: No. But I need a sandwich.
Polar Bear 2: This thing is gonna evaporate in about five fucking minutes and you’re thinking about food?
Polar Bear 1: I’m hungry. Plus, there’s a ton of ice beneath us. We’re OK.

“Professor Michael Mann, director of Pennsylvania State University’s Earth System Science Centre and a regular contributor to the popular climate science blog Real Climate, features in many of the email exchanges. He said: “I’m not going to comment on the content of illegally obtained emails. However, I will say this: both their theft and, I believe, any reproduction of the emails that were obtained on public websites, etc, constitutes serious criminal activity. I’m hoping the perpetrators and their facilitators will be tracked down and prosecuted to the fullest extent the law allows.”"

    Dear Michael Mann,

After parsing your response, what, in your opinion sir, would be the scientific definition of “corn holed”?

If you’ll hold on, I’ll get you a mirror.

  94. Comment by SBP on 11/20 @ 5:58 pm #

So we have a “no comment” from Mann and a “no comment” from Jones.

All we need is one from Hansen to complete the trifecta.

Ah, there’s the spin I was thinking about earlier today. If this story gains any traction at all, look for the hacker to take on Linda Tripp or Joe the Plumber status. Messenger is about to be zorched.

    Polar Bear 1: Yeah.
Polar Bear 2: Dude. He’s retarded. He gets lost in his own nest.

    1. Penguins and poley bears do not commingle in nature. Get an atlas.
    2. Penguins do not use nests. They incubate their eggs on their foots. Watch March of the Penguins already.

the Left says Palin is a liar or psychopath or trailer trash

so why are they so afraid of her that she is the poster grrrrl for OFA/MoveOn fund raising?

Democracy died in this country when the DC/NYC/Frisco/Chicago/LA elites decided that “voters” were rubes too declasse to be allowed a voice in the politics or policies of this country.

Barack Obama has no dignity. This is why everybody says he’s just a Chicago street trash piece of shit. I think it’s cause his mommy and daddy both abandoned his ass is why he has no dignity. Some people just never get over that kind of rejection.

Oh, and this is one of the smokingest guns, so far, IMAO:

And the issue of with-holding data is still a hot potato, one that affects both you and Keith (and Mann). Yes, there are reasons — but many *good* scientists appear to be unsympathetic to these. The trouble here is that with-holding data looks like hiding something, and hiding means (in some eyes) that it is bogus science that is being hidden.

That’s some genu-wine, bona fide moonbat reasoning going on there. The scientific method DEMANDS that data NEVER be withheld, that it all be transparency and double-checking and the like.

But these fools are True Believers, as Hinderaker said in my link, above. They are fully marinated in the assumption that Teh Cause is what’s important, and their manipulations of data isn’t problematic except to the evil people on the outside.

Yup, it’s bunker mentality for sure. Critiques of one’s methods and conclusions is NOT WELCOME, and anyone who isn’t fully on-board with the project can’t be trusted to do “good science.”

    Wow. Just. Wow.

  120. Comment by sdferr on 11/21 @ 11:06 am #

No doubt many years from now, so many years that these dishonest men who are happy to call themselves scientists will all be long dead, someone will look back at this shameful episode and shake their head in wonder. Until then, will justice be done? I think not.

After #118 I wondered how big those extracted files were as I hadn’t done that part yet. 157 meg. Sizable but not drive busting. Oops, there are zip files inside the zip file. Now up to 201 meg. Probably more hidden inside somewhere.

On another forum I frequent, some of us were chastised by a stalwart defender of SCIENCE for being totally immersed/caught up in/consumed by the quest to prove AGW wrong. He just couldn’t understand why.
