What can be said about an American “mainstream media” that rushes to cover the massacre, but does everything it can to shape the story about a “harassed, disturbed psychiatrist” …
Here in Norway CNN International was my only real TV option. Our cable system doesn’t offer Fox News, though it does offer Al-Jazeera, BBC News, and Sky News, all of which offered only spotty, repetitious coverage of the massacre. It was a deeply frustrating experience. In the hours after Michael Jackson’s death CNN International had stayed with the U.S. feed continuously, focusing on nothing other than Jacko’s life and death. This time around, however, the network kept cutting away from the U.S. feed and from the massacre in order to give us international news, including endlessly repeated sports reports and other trivial material. They seemed determined not to treat this as a truly major story.CNN (ditto the New York Times website) was considerably less useful than the tidbits I picked up online by following links on various blogs and in Facebook postings. They led me to (among other things) an AP story, a Daily Mail article, and a Fox News interview that provided telling details: Hasan had apparently been a devout Muslim; Arabic words, reportedly a Muslim prayer, had been posted on his apartment door in Maryland; in conversations with colleagues he had repeatedly expressed sympathy for suicide bombers; on Thursday morning, hours before the massacre, he had supposedly handed out copies of the Koran to neighbors. A couple of these facts eventually surfaced on CNN, but only briefly; they were rushed past, left untouched, unexamined; the network seemed to be making a masterly effort to avoid giving this data a cold, hard look. Meanwhile it spent time doing heavy-handed spin — devoting several minutes, for example, to an inane interview with a forensic psychiatrist who talked about the stress of treating soldiers bearing the emotional scars of war. The obvious purpose was to turn our eyes away from Islamism and toward psychiatric instability as a motive.
… even as further reports have eyewitnesses stating Hasan shouted Allahu Akbar! as he went about his evil murderous deed in a “very calm and measured approach”?
“Morally flacid” doesn’t even begin to cover it.
But it is all of a piece isn’t it?

It does seem to me that this guy, while obviously embarking on his own private jihad, wasn’t part of a larger conspiracy. I’m willing to classify this in the “lone whackjob” category, which is plenty bad but different than “part of a terrorist cell”. I don’t think it matters to the victims or their families why Major Asshole did this, the fact that he did it is terrible enough.
But to ignore the obvious connection to Islam in explaining this guy’s motives is journalistic malpractice. If Billy Bob Slackjaw found himself inspired by Revelations to bring the Rapture on by shooting up a Waffle House, I would expect (and would not be disappointed, I’m sure) to hear that Mr. Slackjaw’s strange personal religious beliefs led him to that course of action. It should not be a problem to point out that Maj. Asshole’s personal trip through the pages of the Koran led him to think that God wanted him to do that and he was crazy enough to believe it.

The story will come out that Hasan was increasingly unstable–which raises the question why wasn’t he kicked out of the Army. But of course, we can not profile Muslims who start to go a little weird (when a muslim starts praising suicide murderers as heroes, that is a danger sign). It’s due to multiculturalism’s crippling of common sense, lee. The fact that even the military’s judgment has been impaired by that disease is stunning. Common sense would require isolating a soldier of any race, creed or religion who praises suicide bombers for killing Americans. Such statements exceed soldier’s bellyache that “we’re fighting the wrong war” or some such.
I know that anecdote isn’t data, but I’d like to hear LTC John (and others) address this with personal experience, if he’s had any. A career-military friend of mine now in A-stan once said he was encountering more and more “philosophical opposition” from ethnics in the military, but something came up before I could ask him to elaborate on that.

What does it say for Homeland Security, when a malignant mad muzzie can wage jihad for ten minutes on an army camp of some 40,000 squaddie, before a civilian lady cop steps in and wings the bastard, taking a bullet herself and becoming a heroine in the process?
The Senior Officers who had logged this murderer’s prior attitude and failed to take the necessary steps to remove him from the armed services and put him under close surveillance should be cashiered themselves.
Had the camp been raided by an armed militia of whirling dervishes, rather than just a lone warrior, I fear that they could have wiped out a large percentage of the US Army before somebody managed to scramble the storm troops.

Couple of points:
Kicked out of the Army … the military and thus the taxpayer put Major Asshole through med school and his residency, so the notion of him cashiering out early should and would have been squashed as much as possible. So that he was given the “Fuck you, next in line please” treatment is not surprising. I suspect the not wanting to go into combat line is fake, a cover. I believe that it came initially from his family, so grain of salt warning there.
Promoted to Major. My understanding is that this is routine for medical corps. Perhaps our military colleagues can confirm or reject. Reason I know is when my wife was finishing her 4 years of Dental, she was heavily recruited by the Air Force. They offered to pay for any speciality programs she have wanted to pursue, plus she would come in at Captain rank and there was a fast track to higher ranks with all the privelages (primarily pay & benefits) that come with such advancement.
Regarding Nancy Pelosi. They are doubling down and going for broke. You can see it in their eyes. Get it over the line, damn what tomorrow brings.

#25 - I have no experience in PC paralysis over religion, but have seen plenty over race. AGR career types are quite often seen fleeing even elementary responsibilities if there is someone holding the IG on speed dial/race card held aloft.
Medical providers in the Armed Forces are often on auto-pilot for the first promotion, but this guy’s other, obvious problems should have had him shut down and admin separated some time back. If he went all jihad-y after that, we would simply have a different NARRATIVE - “those rotten bigots drove him to it by discriminating against him and kicking out of the Army”.
I’m still having a hard time coming to grips with this.

I would imagine the employees noticed? But hey, it is take it or leave it. And let’s face facts, while there are undoubtably very qualified and critically necessary persons working for the State of California (mostly in the public safety side of things) there is probably enough dead wood in state agencies to burn the whole state down.
The Governator and the California State Legislators should be slashing budgets in the less than necessary departments and not hurting employees in critical jobs.
But they are a bunch of girly men.

Hasans, upon learning what they are dealing with as Col. Lee had done, ought to be encouraged to return to that conversation armed with a hidden tape-recorder to draw his jihadi interlocutor out through straightforward question and answer, doing their best not to entrap them but simply to elicit honest answers to honestly put questions. Let the jihadi reveal himself on his own terms without provocation. Then take the case to his chain of command. I’d guess that many such potential future Col. Lees are working this out for themselves even now.
