Sunday football open thread [Darleen Click]

I do not want to talk about the USC game. Do.not.

But you all can have at it in the thread.

I will say, great bunch of trick-o-treaters last night. Had about 160 (by candy count). Vast majority of the kids said “Thank you” and a couple of the early teen boys (about 13 or 14 y/o) said “Thank you, m’am.”

Damn. There’s hope yet.

It is unreasonable to think a team can be that good forever.

    ILL-INI !!!!

    Ducks were strong.

Chief Illiniwek is somewhere in the dust bin of political correctness, smiling and flipping the bird at the same time.

  4. Comment by B Moe on 11/1 @ 6:59 am #

With the Mountaineers and the Bulldogs both suffering crushing defeats, I would once again like to thank the Illini for the only bright spot this weekend. The back-stabbing weasel losing is a wonderful thing.

    Amen, al. Preach it, brotherman.

Dan Snyder is considering changing his team’s name to The Washington Casino Owners.

Darleen, that’s great to hear: both that you had a lot of To’Ters, and that they were polite. One of our neighbors hosted a haunted house for the kids in the neighborhood. When I think that America is really going off the rails, I am a little heartened to see folks still working to have a sense of civic community.

My Pats aren’t playing this weekend. I’ll have to watch another game…how’s KC? I’m kinda a Cassel fan.

My Colts have the 49ers this afternoon. This one worries me.

  10. Comment by JD on 11/1 @ 7:22 am #

The Ducks’ absolute domination of the Condoms was quite the surprise.

  11. Comment by Darleen on 11/1 @ 9:13 am #

    JD

It was if the ‘SC defense decided to stay home this trip. The Ducks just were “on” for the whole game. And lordy, every time the SC defense broke up up a play OR QB Masoli just scrambled away, usually for huge gains.

Despite the loss, the Dawgs persuaded me yesterday that the Gators won’t win a National Championship this year. In fact, I’m not sure they can get into the Nat Champ bowl. What was it? The series at 11:45 in the fourth quarter beginning with Fl. ball at Georgia 28 and ending with the ball at UGA 27, having moved the ball to the 17 and fallen back, with a field goal of 44 yds made. The sudden onset of stupidity and incompetence in Fl during that sequence, in the face of determined though merely competent defense, and seeming to come from out of nowhere broke any faith I had maintained in the Gators theretofore. Something is not right in Gatorland.

    Darleen,

We had a lot of kids, too. The kids were invariably polite and said thank you. They tended to get a kick out of our two large dogs that were at the screen door behind me as I handed out candy.

Autzen is one of the toughest places to play in all of college football. It’s a small venue that gets very loud awfully fast.

  15. Comment by Carin on 11/1 @ 9:33 am #

    Football? Never heard of it?

    [Looks at local tv schedule]
    Nope, no football on here.

    AT least no local team.

Despite the Phillies’ loss last night orgasmic delights of athletics await us this afternoon.

    1:00PM — Eagles – Giants, in Philly

4:05PM — Vikings – Packers, Favre returns to Green Bay

    8:05PM — Phillies – Yankees, Game 4

The 55 gallon drum of popcorn is ready!

Also, kudos to area two teams: Penn State continues to roll and appears to have recovered from their loss to to a better than everyone expected Iowa team.

Even better: Perennial loser/doormat/whipping post Temple is … 6-2! and, oh my word, BOWL ELIGIBLE!! One more victory and The Owls would clinch their first winning season in almost twenty years.

Leading 31-17 with ten minutes to go in the game, that Florida had to settle for a field goal instead of a touchdown is a sign of mortal weakness?

Geez, sdferr, the Dogs aren’t that bad!

  18. Comment by B Moe on 11/1 @ 10:09 am #

Meanwhile, the first pitch tonight is at 8 freekin 20? What is wrong with these people?

  19. Comment by BJTexs on 11/1 @ 10:10 am #

Tell me about it, BMoe. I fell asleep last night in the eighth inning.

  20. Comment by sdferr on 11/1 @ 10:22 am #

    “…had to settle for a field goal…”

Nah, the Dogs are better than the score indicates I think. They suck at their penalty discipline (or put better, don’t have any) and they were misfortunate yesterday with a couple of interceptions, but they play the game pretty well otherwise. But my misgivings aren’t about the quality of the opposition. Rather there is something dumb-ish about the Fl offense. They set out from the beginning of the game to prove to themselves that they could run an efficient offensive game and more importantly, drive the ball in from inside the 20. And in their last full series QB’d by Tebow, they proved exactly the opposite. Not right, I say.

  21. Comment by JD on 11/1 @ 10:29 am #

I can see why a Phillies fan would have gone to bed early last night ;-)

  22. Comment by B Moe on 11/1 @ 10:36 am #

They suck at their penalty discipline (or put better, don’t have any)

FTFY. One of the players got a ticket for driving without a license this week, and Richt’s response was to assure the fan base that that those that needed them would be obtaining licenses immediately.

Newt Gingrich explains: See, you turned her into a democrat and a liberal.

Newt, it is funny how you missed the point she always was a democrat and a liberal.

Newt probably thinks the Redskins have good coaching too.

  26. Comment by Frontman on 11/1 @ 11:10 am #

Georgia’s season will be partially redeemed when they beat Tech (and this is from a Tech household). The Dogs are just laying in the weeds for the Jackets.

  27. Comment by B Moe on 11/1 @ 11:49 am #

    So, — fish — rot — head –, situation?

I don’t know if I would equate it with rot, just a serious lack of discipline in my opinion.

And Frontman may be correct, but right now I am not seeing it. Tech’s running game is getting stronger, the Dog’s defense is not.

B Moe, I didn’t get to see WVU-USF, did you? And if so, did USF stop Noel Divine (a local kid from here who I watched playing highschool ball) or did WVU stop him?

  29. Comment by sdferr on 11/1 @ 11:55 am #

    Devine, duh.

  30. Comment by JD on 11/1 @ 12:02 pm #

The GaTech vs Miami game was surreal. GaTech just imploded, and had they not, they would be in the national conversation right now. They can freakin’ run the ball.

Kind of both. We just didn’t play well all the way around, and USF just made one big play after another. Jarrett Brown is by all accounts a great kid, smart with a ton of athletic ability, unfortunately he just doesn’t seem to make good decisions under pressure.

  33. Comment by BJTexs on 11/1 @ 12:39 pm #

    Ruh-Row, JD!

    49ers 7 – Colts 0

Eagles are pretty much laughing at the Giants right. Still early, though.

  34. Comment by JD on 11/1 @ 12:46 pm #

We gave them one, though Gore is a good back. Lots of time left.

    46 seconds remaining 1st half:

    Eagles 30 — Giants 7

Tom Coughlin looks like he chugged a bottle of wine vinegar.

Tech 48, GA 38 (neutral party here). No way can Georgia stop that freight-train option offense of the Jackets. Of course, GT can’t stop GA either, but all they need is to do it a couple times a game (like last night). Plus, home field.

  39. Comment by BJTexs on 11/1 @ 1:48 pm #

    BWAAAAA HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Giants just fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half. This is a waking nightmare for the Gothams right now.

  40. Comment by BJTexs on 11/1 @ 2:42 pm #

This game has just gotten goofy. Fumbles, weird play calling, Giants running their offense with no sense of urgency and kicking a field goal while down 23 points in the fourth quarter … and missing it.

Eagles 40 — Giants 17 nine minutes left.

  41. Comment by JD on 11/1 @ 2:49 pm #

My Colts are in a nail-biter. But Jr is strong strong strong at Talladega. Yankees win tonite. Great sports day.

  42. Comment by BJTexs on 11/1 @ 2:54 pm #

    Yankees win tonite.

Well then! Here’s hoping the Colts choke and die!

  43. Comment by JD on 11/1 @ 2:59 pm #

Choke and die? This has been ugly ugly ugly and has been just what I feared before kickoff.

  44. Comment by JD on 11/1 @ 6:05 pm #

This Green Bay / Minnesota game turned out to be pretty damn fun.

  45. Comment by sdferr on 11/1 @ 6:23 pm #

Watching that GreenBMinVike game I’ve got the notion that the NFL is going to go with a new rule that the defense can’t touch the QB except to shake his hand in congratulations after he throws a TD. Referring specifically to that last roughing the passer call against the V’s.

  46. Comment by sdferr on 11/1 @ 6:33 pm #

Oh, and the earlier horsecollar call on the Iggles when the fella grabbed the middle of Mannings shirt and managed to pull him down. Time was the rule had a hand inside the shirtcollar holding on to the shoulderpads. Time was, actually, there wasn’t a horsecollar rule.

  47. Comment by JD on 11/1 @ 7:58 pm #

Agreed, sdferr. This is all post-Brady injury, though it had roots prior to that.

Fun start to the Pillies/Yankees game.
