… in telling Obama to stop dithering in Afghanistan and give McChrystal his troops:
Washington, D.C.—General Stanley McChrystal´s call for the deployment of additional troops to Afghanistan gained a key endorsement over the weekend. As the commander of NATO´s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, General McChrystal´s plan to implement President Obama´s March counterinsurgency strategy received “broad support” from NATO member-nation defense ministers at a weekend meeting in Slovakia.According to a Voice of America news report, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said “that defense ministers have a ´general shared view´ that Afghanistan must be empowered to defend itself.”
Further, Mr. Rasmussen clearly articulated the consequences if NATO and the Afghan government do not succeed in their fight against the Taliban-led insurgency. Rasmussen: “The only way to ensure that Afghanistan does not become, once again, a safe haven for terrorists is if it is made strong enough to resist the insurgency as well. The Taliban hosted al-Qaida in the past, [and] extreme elements of the Taliban could well do so in the future.”

RELATED: Why it is a good idea not to have Afghanistan back in Taliban hands:
Two Chicago men have been charged in connection with the planning of terrorist acts against overseas targets, including a Danish newspaper that published cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad.Federal investigators unsealed the charges nine days after the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force conducted a massive raid on an Islamic butcher shop in the tiny, rural town of Kinsman, Ill. — a meatpacking business owned by one of the suspects, Tahawwur Hussain Rana. [...]
Prosecutors contend Headley traveled to Denmark twice this year to identify potential targets for a terrorist attack and that Rana helped arrange Headley’s travel, concealing the true nature of his journeys.
Headley was arrested on Oct. 3 at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on his way to Pakistan, where federal officials say he was planning to meet with representatives of the Pakistan-based terrorist groups, Harakat ul-Jihad Islami and Lakshar-e-Taiba.

Translation: NATO insists that the U.S. and G.B. sacrifice more of their own so that the other NATO member nations don’t look bad.
You know how I feel, sending more troops to die in a conflict that the C.I.C. doesn’t want to be involved in is a waste of our youth. I’d prefer not to spend the next 3 years watching The Partner With God play golf while our kids die as he dithers endlessly.
Comment by LTC John on 10/27 @ 9:28 am #
Eben,
NATO is saying “stop dithering”. The Canadians and Brits would never follow us again, if this happens – ditto for the Australians. They have all punched above their weight in this one. The Poles and Rumanians have sent plenty too. The Baltics have almost no military establishments, but send folks. Just becuase the Germans, Italians, French and Benelux countries aren’t up to it is no reason to abandon Afghanistan once again.
I rather hope we continue to help the Afghans, and erase the earlier shame of GHW Bush and Clinton in leaving them unthought of when the place fell to #$%& in the 1990s.
If I have to go over again, so be it.

It’s a shame that it’s come to this; NATO telling us to stop fiddling around and get with it!
It’s like I’m living in a bizzaro world out of a bad science fiction story or something…
Definately so after “Lurch” Kerry’s palaver the other day, seemingly laying the groundwork for bugging out…
I also can’t believe that Obama doesn’t realize that, in combination with his world apology tour, failure with Iran, and seeming to strategically blink with the Russians, if he also withdraws from Afghanistan he will be seen as Presiding over the biggest foreign policy self inflicted failure since Vietnam. For all of their rhetoric about quagmires and such, it appears they’re going out of their way to turn Afghanistan into a real good one! They’re determined to force this into a Vietnam model, down to regime change in Kabul…
If they vote in a new leader, no problem; but I get the feeling sometimes that they are looking at this like substituting in a relief pitcher or second-string QB in the hopes that they’ll do better…

Blood flows feely but it’s brown people’s blood, Middle Eastern blood and, therefore, of no account. We can ignore it and work on significantly reducing the welfare system that is the US military, thereby making more money available to send to poor countries to treat childhood diarrhea.
Then again, alphie/snocone was always confused by why people made such a big fuss about the Twin Towers as, hey, it wasn’t even 1/10 the number US military fatalities in Vietnam. Why were all of us wee-weed up over a lousy 3000 casualties?
All of the above represents the commentary footprint that is alphie/snocone in all of his various iterations. Did I cover it all, alpo? I left out the VATech massacre thing that got you banned from this site to begin with.

A Taliban controlled Afghanistan provides a safe-zone for various Islamofascist groups to rest, regroup, and re-equip. It provides an area for training. Denying an enemy safe-zones is merely good warfare. Same with Somalia; same with Waziristan.
Any energy and resource spent concealing the activities of rest, regroup, re-equip, re-train, and basic train are energy and resources not spent on operations. And much more costly to a much more shallow treasury than the USA and the West have. And very costly to morale and fitness.
