Keeping up With the Collective. [JHoward]

From Congress.org:

In the coming weeks, the Senate will consider overhauling the way student loans are handled in the United States.

The House has already passed legislation that would put the federal government directly in charge of making loans.

But last year’s recession played a pivotal role in pushing this initiative forward. As lending markets froze up in 2008, the government intervened with the “Ensuring Continued Access to Student Loans Act” (ECASLA) — a government promise, effectively, to buy loans off of lenders after four months in order to keep capital flowing through the system.

The House voted 253-171 on Sept. 17 to pass the bill.

When the prior, fundamental principle is finally abandoned, anything’s possible.

I understand politically why this is happening with student loans, but it is still a bad precedent.

And I have to give Tapper kudos for taking this issue on with the White House. Tapper is smart enough to realize that if the White House can delegitimize Fox, it can delegitimize any “news organization.”

    , “anything’s possible.”

One of the possible chain reactions cited was ‘cascading failure’, as in
failure of the electrical grid. Why you folks were busy championing the de-taxing and deregulation of America, all that infrastructure built in the 30’s and 40’s (highways and dams and such) promulgated by the Roosevelt Administration was followed by a sense of unreality about what our priorities should be as we fiddled with reinvesting in the basics of daily living.

Student loans could be counted in that equation, as it pertains to building a proper foundation for the future.

As a consequence, of failing to keep our electrical grid viable, we are going to need all the technicians and engineers we can lay our hands on when household appliances brown-out, or are consigned to operating on a Baghdad, one-hour per day schedule. Try to look a little deeper than the surface of fiscal responsibility.

Let’s hope the feds make sure that lenders are forced to give loans to students who have almost no chance of repaying them. Then the legislation would be perfect.

Just asking, is there a reason why colleges that are competing for students, or banks that are competing for customers, couldn’t be making these loans instead of the Feds?

#2 if we’re going to use tax dollars invest in college students, could we at least do it base on (1) their likely ability to repay, and (2) their likely ability to contribute to US GDP? A start might be using aptitude, rather than need, as a qualifier.

  7. Comment by Joe on 10/20 @ 4:16 pm #

Holy Shit, Charles is starting to make sense! Did I get high or something?

Acutally it is really hard to get out of paying student loans. It is hard to dump them even in bankruptcy. You basically have to die or go into somesort of vegetative state to get out of them.

The problem with student loans is they have encouraged colleges and universities to greatly raise their tuitions far faster than inflation. It is a false market. Wouldn’t students be better off with schools that cost less and thus having less debt when they got out of school? You can still offer programs for expensive degrees such as medicine.

  8. Comment by B Moe on 10/20 @ 4:18 pm #

I would like to know why these colleges can’t just lower their fucking rates if too many people are having trouble paying them.

  9. Comment by Joe on 10/20 @ 4:19 pm #

B Moe, becuase…well just because. They have to keep maintaining those six figure (and in some cases seven figure) salaries to the administration.

  10. Comment by SDN on 10/20 @ 4:23 pm #

#2: Of course, the electricity market in the US is pretty close to a POLAR OPPOSITE from a free and unregulated market. In most states (TX being an exception) there is one electricity provider. In all states, the number of providers and how they operate are under the control of state government utility commissions, heavily modified by Federal government (Energy Dept, EPA, etc., ad nauseam) regulators.

    Meet the Trollhammer.

  11. Comment by B Moe on 10/20 @ 4:24 pm #

I live in a college town, trust me I know how it works. I also get a lot of work because of the college, so I really can’t bitch too much. Although I suspect private industry would be doing better if it weren’t for the ridiculous tax load.

  12. Comment by JHo on 10/20 @ 4:25 pm #

Charles made sense on military welfare, actually, such as it may be. Charles makes no sense on arbitrary “aptitude”-activated aid from the federal government simply because we know how such systems go. Invariably in the shitter. Invariably, to use Joe’s lingo, the way of all false markets.

Charles therefore yet makes no overall sense on the issue of government’s authority, that being the context that encompasses both issues. Further, why does the discussion almost always turn to a perception of the pragmatic outcomes and rarely to the fundamental authority and why such authority was once so strictly limited.

Shorter JHo: Where the heck is government’s right to run everything? I mean, if we’re just giving up on personal liberty, stupid land that we obviously are, then keeping up with the collective is impossible.

  13. Comment by Charles on 10/20 @ 4:30 pm #

#12 – Hey, I completely agree. I don’t actually want the Feds involved in student loans *at all*. I suppose states could be in the game, if they so choose. I was just making a note that “need” seems a strange loan criteria. I can’t think of any place else where need trumps return on investment.

  14. Comment by JHo on 10/20 @ 4:34 pm #

Yeh, if states were in the game we could go shopping. But so messy is the way of liberty that surely someone will devise a way to clean it up. Which brings us back to the point that there’s nothing govt can’t wreck that it can’t then take over.

I move for a constitution that enumerates what govt can do.

Because Congress recently decided that banks should just keep out of the student loan business and let Uncle Sugar handle it. Theses are Our Children™ after all, and we wouldn’t want them getting tangled up with capitalists at such a tender age.

Come on, just think of this new program as a payoff for that core constituency — college professors, sort of like cash for clunkers. If money isn’t guaranteed, colleges might have to actually start competing, and professors might have to get their salaries cut.

The conservative dilemma is, ironically, profound. They set the stage
for gargantuan avarice to ply it’s trade, then hunker down while the world around them wrestles with piecing the pottery shards, biting ankles feverishly as they bemoan the consequences of nearly three decades of Keynesian Perversions, hoping against hope to deflect consequential responsibility from the originators of our present outcome.

    From:

    http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_091709/content/01125114.guest.html

Let me review for you what is happening. Do you understand they’ve taken over the mortgage market? Ninety percent of it. The federal government is in charge of determining who gets a mortgage — and it’s not just the federal government. It’s the Obama branch of the federal government. It’s the Obama administration. This is Obama’s America. The Republican Party is not taking over Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. That was done by Chris Dodd, Bill Clinton, and Barney Frank “the Banking Queen.” The House today just voted to take over in its entirety the student loan program as soon as next year. There will be no private lending for the student loan program in six months. Now, what this adds up to is that the federal government is in charge of who gets money. The Obama administration is literally taking over all control of access to money in this country.

They’ve got the banks under their spell. They are sitting on Wall Street. They’ve got their favorite players up there. Goldman Sachs and the rest have bull’s-eyes painted on them. So if they can take over the student loan market, if they can take over the home loan market, and they own the car companies, pretty soon the Obama administration is going to sit there and be the determining factor into who gets money in the form of loans to grow a business or to send a kid to school. This is not the Republicans doing this, and this is not “what Washington’s always done.” This is the biggest power grab ever! This is radical leftism fascism that has gotten its hooks into this country, and if you want to sit out there and say that there’s no difference in the two parties, you go ahead and delude yourselves.

And I say that not defending the Republican Party. I’m telling you what we face is an onslaught of radical leftism like we have never faced before. This is not “Washington as usual.” This is Washington as usual on steroids being run by radical leftists who have had designs on this since the sixties, and even prior to that. You think it might matter whether you’re Republican or Democrat when you want to get your kid a student loan? You think it might matter who they can find that you contributed to in elections campaigns? You think it might matter when it comes to health care when they take that over? You think it might matter whether your procedure gets approved or not, depending on where your political loyalties lie?

Now, don’t tell me the Republicans are doing this kind of stuff. The Republicans’ big sin is to sit back and say nothing while this is happening! The Republicans’ big sin is sitting around and letting all of you people lead this way. There is no charismatic leader in charge of this. People are fed up. It’s a generational thing. We went through that mere moments ago. It’s fascinating to watch. There’s no racism involved here. There’s just deep patriotism, people finally at the boiling point. This has been effervescing for years. I understand totally the overwhelming disgust you have for Washington, and I understand the overwhelming desire you have to lump them together. But, folks, you gotta be more discerning. As inept and as elitist and as monitor blue-blood country club as the Republican Party is, they are not fascists. They are not socialists.
    [emphasis-ed]

I don’t generally listen to Limbaugh, and never have quoted him before. But I heard him while traveling in late September, and thought his discussion of this to be unusually cogent and on target. Sure, he’s an entertainer, prone to being hyperbolic, but there are kernels of truth throughout this rant, and it is appropriate to the discussion.

I’d like to think that I’ve never led any here wrong…

    All the best

First, I don’t know where the Federal government has the authority to be in the student loan business. I mean, we could end the conversation right there, but assuming you think the feds have the authority to do whatever they want…

I have a better idea. Why don’t you set up a business originating student loans. Set it up as a non-profit if you want, or pay a return to the people who fund it.

Do you really doubt you could probably figure out how to be more efficient? You don’t have a budget allocated to you, so you shop for cheaper office space, you do real due-diligence when you hire people, turn lights off to save electricity, and look at every line item and figure out how to trim it down. You get rid of any dead weight quickly. Your going to scrutinize the loans, because if you make bad loans, your out of business. Can the government really do it better?

That doesn’t even make sense, Snowcone. For starters, I’ve only mentioned what I do for a living here once (aside from a few occasions where it was germane to the topic of a post). I’ve only been asked what I do for a living once. By you. And I answered in the most simple and non-egotistical manner I could. Yet no matter how many times people ask you questions of that nature you hide like a little bitch.

THEY woul get the scholarships, and trust me, they weren’t “full boats” like today. Once the Govt. got involved? (I’d like to blame Carter here, but it started w/LBJ) It became a quota system

And I don’t think Obama has properly thanked Palin for winning him Virginia with her “Real America” crack.

    Thank you, Sarah.

What RS McCain said. Barrett, you are a nozzle of douches, and as always, my sincere apologies to actual douchenozzles.

In your case it is self-evident. Nobody with a brain or any self-respect would persist as a side show clown and punching bag like you do here.

“Why pass up the chance to prove to your peers you’re a real conservative, not a partisan whiner?”

‘Cause in the end you’re not my peer and I don’t give a rat’s fuck what you think in the end. No matter what, you’ve proven that you’re going to believe what you want to believe. ”

You know, I’m not really sure that snottard actually HAS beliefs.

It’s more like it shows up and vomits talking points that have no connection to reality.

    R. S. McCain reply to Barrett Brown.

Barrett’s being more stupid than usual. Wonder why he didn’t reply in comments?

I went to Huffpo to see what he’s written, and, well, waste of time. He has quite a lot more sarcasm at his command than he has actual argument.

I just saw a piece the other day referring to folks like Barrett as “evangelical atheists”.

I really like that, wish I could remember where it was.

    “evangelical atheists”

    A web site.

    Article at American Thinker.

And a reasonable (for them)definition at Urban Dictionary.

An evangelical atheist is one who not only believes there is no god or other supreme being, but is obsessed with convincing everyone around them to become an atheist too, usually through hard-line intolerance (the kind they accuse other religions of).

Maybe prospective student borrowers should look first at how TARP recipients fared once the took the King’s shilling.
