Whacky week, including my facility did a full-on earthquake drill on October 15 including organizing rescue teams, satellite walkie-talkie phones, and scenarios where a team runs around tagging buildings as collapsed, people dead or injured, and drafting people to play dead bodies throughout the buildings.
Took only 2.5 hours this year. Last year it was 4.5.
And only 100 degrees outside.
SO, Friday night is welcome with no alarm to jangle tomorrow morning and beloved hubby (taking some vacation after a major server rebuilds, database migration and replacement of workstations to thin clients) meeting me at the door with a gin martini, two olives, shaken not stirred.
Life has its good moments. What are yours tonight? For the weekend?

I wish I could know the good moments ahead of time but they just sort of happen, sometimes. Either that or they don’t happen. I wish it would rain some more.
Comment by Darleen on 10/16 @ 9:14 pm #
I wish it would rain some more.
Yeah…it was rainy and cold on Wed. On Thurs it was 100 degrees as we stood outside on a parched field during the earthquake drill.
On the other hand, this is the earliest opening weekend of skiing at Mammoth Mountain in over a dozen years (with a 6 foot base at the higher elevations).
somewhere, Al Gore is livid.

They recently put reruns of Star Trek The Next Generation on a local broadcast TV station.

You can have the rest of ours. Metro Atlanta won’t be needing any more for a while.
Comment by happyfeet on 10/16 @ 9:18 pm #
That was sort of cruel how that happened. I’m ready for cold. I want to say wow it’s blustery out there. And have a mocha. I’m drinking mochas a lot anyway just the kind with splenda, coffee and cocoa and they’re tasty but think how much more tasty they would be as an accompaniment to blustery weather. Pretty darn tasty.
Comment by happyfeet on 10/16 @ 9:19 pm #
I heard that about Atlanta. That’s nice for y’all though cause it was pretty arid there for awhile.

Yard-work over for the year until the snow. Mower put up for the winter. Minimal leaves as this yard has no trees, sigh, former house was surrounded. A weekend to spend with my darling wife, relaxing I pray. Heaven at home. DVDs and popcorn.
Comment by LTC John on 10/16 @ 10:03 pm #
hf, better with a splash of Dalwhinnie or Oban (maybe even Talisker) in it!
Played with the kids, made dinner, let the missus get to bed early while I watched a couple of episodes of the “Flight of the Conchords” while nursing a drink (now two). I rather like being home.
Comment by happyfeet on 10/16 @ 10:10 pm #
That sounds good after all. I got to looking at Astroworld pictures online and I got sort of melancholy. That was a theme park in Houston I went to a million times when I was little. They tore it down cause of it got infested with gangs of yoots. The really mean kind. This was where you came in for when you started your day of fun. You had to walk over this bridge to get there or you could have gotten a tram depending on where you parked.
Comment by happyfeet on 10/16 @ 10:12 pm #
that sounds like a really great weekend Mr. geoff. I have to do a presentation. And stats reports. And laundry.
Comment by geoffb on 10/16 @ 10:21 pm #
“And laundry”
Well there is that but it happens everyday, unlike when I was single, plus cooking, dishes, banking, shopping and bills. Gah! Concentrate on the relax part, OOOOOOMMMMMMMM…

On Wednesday they called to tell me that a job they told me I’d been turned down for was now open and did I want it and I had just awakened and couldn’t respond beyond saying “iiiiiinteresting.”
And then I accepted. Doesn’t start until mid-November. One-year contract. Short commute. Easy workload.
Wish I had the energy to celebrate. But I did buy pie.
Comment by geoffb on 10/17 @ 1:13 am #
Congratulations dicentra!
And with that, it’s 3am and bedtime for me.

I didn’t get any notes tonight.
going to some tea party thinger tomorrow with RTO. It will require getting up early, but I have been promised doughnuts. and then the rest of the weekend will probably be spent on the sofa catching up on things on the DVR and football. and napping. oh and probably a dog walk in there somewhere since the sun is supposed to be out this weekend.

Going to my daughter’s soccer game this morning in 45 degrees and light rain. Yea! Even she doesn’t want to play, but she made a commitment and she’s going to honor it. We’ll just have to dress her warmly…Tonight will be time for a few beverages along the lines the good Colonel was talking about, except I prefer a Balvenie or a Lagavulin.
Congratulations, dicentra. That is indeed good news.

I’m in Kentucky for the weekend at a most beloved Aunt-in-law’s 90th birthday celebration. Gonna be a terrific weekend.

Lets see the Mrs is in Dallas until Sat night, that means that I’m Mr. Mom.
I have to get the haloween yard art up.
Buy some milk – we running low. Oh and potatoes, and bananas.
Take them to piano practice.
Take em by my aunt’s place to see their godmother who is in from out of town.
Make dinner
Get about 10 hours of work done.
Catch a flight to chicago on Sunday for a week long training session.
At this rate they’ll be 16 by the time I make it home.
Nutz.

I don’t know what my plans are for the weekend, but I think you just talked me into a couple of gin martinis. That sounds good, and it’s been awhile since I’ve had one (or more).
Comment by Seth on 10/17 @ 7:52 am #
Dicentra: congrats. Pie is always a good idea.
Oh, and that job thing sounds good, too.
Comment by McGehee on 10/17 @ 7:54 am #
True, but that’s how these things work; we’re on watering restrictions until the house floats away, and then by the time the flood damage is fixed we’re back on watering restrictions.
You’d think we were in Texas or something — except I hear in Texas that’s, like, a typical weekend.

I have to take my 7-year old shopping for a new outfit, and then to a brithday party where she will inevitably want to wear the new outfit. 20+ 7 year olds at Bounce Planet gives me a migraine every time, but my little angel loves it, which more than makes up for it. Then, more shopping for a pet that we promised her should she get straight A’s on her 1st Quarter report card. I am thinking hermit crab or a fish. She is thinking one of those dogs you put clothes on and carry around in your purse. This could be a challenge. Oh, and I have to find a way to fit in the OU vs TX and ND vs USC games.
Comment by Joe on 10/17 @ 8:24 am #
dicentra, congratulations on the job.

WTF? Does CJ have his minions trolling the ‘net looking for every place possible that his “enemies” like RSM leave a comment?
This is beyond pitiful, the man’s paranoia has edged into psychosis. He’s moving into dangerous territory.

Serr8d – Is there a QB controversy in Titans-world yet?
Comment by Seth on 10/17 @ 8:41 am #
serr8d: I disagree. My fav pie is vinegar, the outlaw of pies.
Comment by serr8d on 10/17 @ 8:43 am #
Hmmmph. I think the problem with the Titans is that Jeff Fisher is burned out. Steve McNair’s horrific death (happened within sight of LP Field) couldn’t have helped. He needs a change of scenery, after maybe a year or so off to recharge.
Of course, losing Jim Schwartz to the Lions (we have Chuck Cecil as defensive coordinator now, and look at the carnage) didn’t help.
Comment by serr8d on 10/17 @ 8:44 am #
Vinegar on a pie? Ummm…
No. I won’t go there. NO!
Comment by JD on 10/17 @ 8:45 am #
You would think of all people, Chuck “Headhunter” Cecil could coach an aggressive defense. I really like Fischer, but agree with your take that he seems burned out.
Comment by Seth on 10/17 @ 8:47 am #
Heh, not as horrible as it would sound. Like a custard pie with a tangy kick.
Comment by Darleen on 10/17 @ 8:50 am #
I have this recipe for lemon bars that are the perfect balance of sweet and tangy.

Vinegar on hairpie is a very traditional dessert ;-)

Oh, JD, sushi on me whenever you’re in the neighborhood. There’s plenty of decent outlets around town.
I get to play amateur HVAC repairman today. Wife turned on the heater yesterday, worked fine for one cycle. Then no more. It’ll be 30 F tonight, so out I go. Man cannot survive on gas logs alone!

JD:
Last month we rescued a teacup chihuahua from the local pound. She’s almost six years old, and weights a little less than two pounds. I’ve always had big dogs, and right now we have three, ranging from German Shepherd to rat terrier. I always thought little dogs were useless, better for bait than for a dog.
But, I’ve got to tell you, this little thing has grown on me. She’s not really like a dog, because she doesn’t do dog stuff, but she loves people and loves to sit on your lap and snuggle. I’m sure some of them are, but this one’s not “yippy” at all, she only barks quietly out of excitemennt when you’re about to feed her.
Comment by JD on 10/17 @ 2:05 pm #
Now that sounds like a good dog, Cowboy. Though the idea of a cowboy with a mini-chihuahua is kind of amusing. My little ones like Shih-Tzu’s. I prefer Boxers.
Comment by Cowboy on 10/17 @ 2:15 pm #
I know. It goes completely contrary to my carefully developed image!
I’ve heard boxers are good dogs.
Comment by maggie katzen on 10/19 @ 12:21 am #
I’ve decided that men hit a certain age (um, old) and it’s not necessarily a conscious decision, but they decide they need a small dog. I see many in my neighborhood and they make me giggle. Particularly the guy in the biker vest that waves at everybody with his two tiny poodle looking things.
Comment by B Moe on 10/19 @ 5:04 am #
Chicks dig them, maggie. Its as simple as that.
