I’m old enough to not only recall President George H.W. Bush’s phrase a thousand points of light in reference to volunteerism, but to remember how that phrase and concept was mocked, derided and satirized.
My, how times have changed.
On September 10th of this year the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) posted a press release informing the world that “from October 19-25, more than 60 network TV shows [will] spotlight the power and personal benefits of service,” and that this “unprecedented block of TV programming is the first wave of a multi-year ‘I Participate’ campaign.”On its face this all sounds rather benign in that silly, liberal do-gooder kind of way. The networks have launched these kinds of campaigns before and other than some clunky exposition awkwardly inserted into your favorite show to meet the mandate — no harm, no foul. [...]
We’ll have to wait until next week to see what effect this initiative will have on the 60 television (and news) programs in question, but thanks to the intrepid Patrick Courrielche and Stage Right, today we can answer the simple question of…
“What’s wrong with this?”
Doing the work the Kamikaze Media (many of whom are participating in this event rather than digging for the story) refuses, and with the help of Big Government’s Dana Loesch, Patrick and Stage Right have discovered that when it comes to this White House – whether it’s the NEA conference calls or EIF’s iParticipate programming — all roads funnel into one place: online volunteer portals, including Serve.gov, where if you plug in “health care” all kinds of Planned Parenthood openings pop up along with a video dispelling those ugly “myths” knocking ObamaCare.
There’s scarier stuff, but I don’t want to spoil the surprise. *cough*Trutherism*cough*
Maybe “service” and “volunteerism” is something exotic and new to coastal, urban elites — save for an occassional march against Global Warming Climate Change; but for the vast majority of middle Americans coaching soccer, preparing packages for soldiers, quilting covers for NICU incubators, delivering Meals on Wheels, fundraising for PTA, adopting a section of highway to keep clean of litter, being part of a church group that feeds the homeless, etc, this is just a way of life.
Makes this kind of creepy. Even the authors of that memo felt it necessary to put “organically” in quotes.
Indeed.

A. [Richard Dawkins] There does seem to be evidence of a divide in the United States between two cultures. It does seem to be a deeper divide, and maybe even a widening one, perhaps we don’t see in European countries. There seems to be a divide between what shall we say — the Sarah Palin voters and the Barack Obama voters — who seem to be more bitterly split than the corresponding divides in other countries.

“J Street’s conference next week has become a Rorschach test of sorts. More and more members of Congress are dropping out, having discovered just who will be speaking — such as this “poet” who finds Gaza to be another fascistic ghetto, complete with numbers written “on the wrists of babies.” And then there is the 9-11 “truther.” So Sens. Schumer, Gillibrand, Lincoln, and Cochran have bugged out, as have a growing list of congressmen.
But not the administration. The Obami are to be represented by National Security Adviser James Jones, who has no problem appearing on the same stage with those who wax lyrical about Guantanamo being Auschwitz and who find noxious any sanctions against Iran.
This of course is the gang who awarded Mary Robinson America’s highest honor. Hobnobbing with Israel bashers, therefore, is nothing new. But it does remind those who vouched for Obama just how misguided they were about his instincts and internal radar where Israel is concerned.”

keep the elephants in the minority for a long time. Thank you Kathleen Parker, John McCain, David Frum, etc. Although I must admit I DO approve of Meghan’s assets–too bad they are politiclly worthless! ! ! ! !M !

In the end that the left foresees there will be two classes of “volunteers”. The activists who will readily sign up and will be paid “volunteers”. paid by us to work on behalf of “the cause”. What in the past would be called employees.
Then there will be those required by law to “volunteer”. If paid we would call it indentured servitude. If unpaid it is simply slavery, State slavery, the kind the left loves now that the private kind is not available. The activist “volunteers” will be their bosses, being the “more equal” of the “volunteers”.

Perfecting mankind, making Heaven in this life by use of force, Government force, is the goal of the Left.
Conservatism wants less government involvement in the personal side, not more.

Instead, each volunteered locally and did what they thought their own neighborhoods or community needed. At one point, one interviewee from Seattle said, “I’m not going to be a ‘point of light.’
At which point I pointed out, “But that is exactly what every one of you has just described yourselves as . . .”
