Following up on this post that covered Patrick Courrielche’s report of his participation in a conference call where the NEA discussed recruiting “artists, producers, promoters, organizers, influencers, marketers, taste-makers, leaders or just plain cool people” to help Obama shape the public into the correct manner of thinking.

Seems that report was just the first shoe. Big Government’s Big Hollywood recaps the call, the fall out and promises more.
And now here is MORE:
The NEA and the White House did encourage a handpicked, pro-Obama arts group to address politically controversial issues under contentious national debate. That fact is irrefutable. But some have claimed that the invite and passages, pulled from the conference call that inspired the article, were taken out of context. Context is what I intend to establish here.
**NEA conference call full audio and transcript here**
Excerpts:
•“I just first of all want to thank everyone for being on the call and just a deep deep appreciation for all the work you all put into the campaign for the 2+ years we all worked together.”
•“We won.”
•“I’m actually in the White House and working towards furthering this agenda, this very aggressive agenda.”
•“We’re going to come at you with some specific asks here.”
•“I hope you guys are ready.”
******************
•“I would encourage you to pick something, whether it’s health care, education, the environment, you know, there’s four key areas that the corporation has identified as the areas of service.”
•“And then my ask would be to apply artistic, you know, your artistic creative communities utilities and bring them to the table.”
•“Again, I’m really, really honored to be working with you; the National Endowment for the Arts is really honored.”
•“You’re going to see a lot more of us in the next four and hopefully eight years.”
*********************
•“I’ve been asked by folks in the White House and folks in the NEA … we had the idea that I would help bring together the artist community…”
•“…the Hope poster obviously is a great example, but it’s clear as an independent art community as artists and thinkers and tastemakers and marketers and visionaries that are on this call, the role that we played during the campaign for the president…”
•“…the President has a clear arts agenda and has been very supportive of using art and supporting art in creative ways to talk about some issues that we face here in our country, but also to engage people. And I think all of us who are on this phone call, you know, were selected for a reason.”
•“And so I’m hoping that through this group, and the goal of all this, and the goal of this phone call, is through this group we can create a stronger community amongst ourselves to get involved in things we’re passionate about as we did during the campaign. But to continue to get involved in those things, to support some of the President’s initiatives, but also to do things that we are passionate about and to push the President and push his administration…“

Why does the NEA even bother? I’m a libertarian who movies in artsy circles, and although they think they’re free spirits, I can tell you that most of them that I’ve encounter are probably even bigger State-fellators than Snowcone. (And that’s saying a lot.) In any political contest, the arts community will almost always support the least pro-freedom of the candidates, and pretty much will always fall in lockstep behind Big Brother. (Provided, of course, he doesn’t threaten to cut their subsidies.)
Comment by Blake on 9/21 @ 11:01 am #

I’ll take that as high praise.

Comment by JD on 9/21 @ 11:01 am #
It is clearly an inappropriate use of the NEA to push Barcky’s legislative agenda. My question is if this is legal? Can taxpayer dollars, especially with someone in the White House, be used for overtly partisan political purposes?

News: ACORN offices nationwide busted giving illegal tax advice to people posing as pimps and hookers.
Snowcone’s response: This is a non-story. No one cares. Why aren’t you talking about that guy who got beat up? You’re so heartless!
News: Obama Adminstration using NEA as a propaganda mouthpiece.
Snowcone’s response: This is meaningless. Why don’t you say something substantive? Don’t you care about ACORN anymore?
I’ve tried to get Snowcone to display the intellectual and moral seriousness that the Good Lord gave to spider monkeys by condemning bad things as bad before he showers us with abuse for pointing fingers at the bad things. This he steadfastly refuses to do.
Conclusion: Snowcone is un-bothered by prostiution, underage sex slavery, or the transformation of public artistic foundations into Obama’s MiniTruth.
Secondary Conclusion: Snowcone is a moral midget and a fascist.
My theory remains testable.

Once again, the question for Leftists:
Suppose an NEA official under George Bush participated in a conference call encouraging artists to use their creative talents to advance the president’s agenda including that of the Iraq war.
You’re telling me this wouldn’t be on the front page above-the-fold of the NY Times with wall-to-wall calls for Senate hearings and even murmurs of “impeachment”?
Go ahead, tell me.
As a filmmaker, this story actually arouses more revulsion in me than the ACORN story. To make it through such a call without a violent physical reaction disqualifies one from even calling himself an artist, much less “independent.” I know the sort of people on this conference call, the so-called “tastemakers and really cool people.” I run across them all the time in LA. The experience is never better than dispiriting.

Snowy: Afghanistan is the “good” war; Iraq was the “pointless” one. Check your notes.
And for those of you keeping score at home:
1) Obama’s pretense that he’s unaware of his connections to ACORN, the criminal organization that uses tax dollars sent by our criminal congressmen to help other criminals hide their criminal acts from the tax man and the cops;
2) Obama’s cap-and-trade scheme which was revealed to cost $300,000,000,000 per year;
3) Obama’s health care/health insurance reform effort which is hemorrhaging support faster than even the best amputate-for-profit surgeon could fix;
4) Obama’s paralysis in the face of increasing challenges in Afghanistan that demand swift and decisive action;
5) Obama’s continuing sucking-up to despots around the world at the expense of our allies and other democratically-elected leaders; and
6) Obama’s still-unfulfilled promise to “create or save” jobs in the face of an unemployment rate that exceeds his own worst-case scenario…

Comment by Ric Locke on 9/21 @ 1:21 pm #
no, no, louchette. You aren’t thinking hard hitting! enough.
What’s needed are used prosthetics — limbs, hands, all the various types, although snowcone’s prosthetic brain probably wouldn’t be edgy enough, and they all have to be from soldiers (small pictures of the individuals, preferably in uniform, will be attached to each). We glue and/or weld them into a simulacrum of (s*t, I can’t remember enough of the name to find it on the web; it’s a statue of a caryatid or Kore, who has collapsed under the column she supports but is still straining to hold it up. If it doesn’t break your heart to look at it, you have no soul), except that in this case the load that’s broken its carrier is a two-faced bust of Bush and Cheney holding money bags in each hand; and, at the figure’s feet, we have a pile of crushed and broken bodies of dead children.
No blood, menstrual or otherwise, needed, although a little blood and used engine oil, mixed, would add something to the piece. It may be hard to get the prosthetics, but that just means the grant has to be big — we’ll need two dozen or so, and I figure ten grand apiece will be enough for the people we get them from to replace them, so we ask up front for a million and settle for half that. The bust, crushed brown children, &etc. can come from stock — there must be a couple of tons of that stuff rolling around the Art Community.
Anybody prepared to do a concept sketch?
Regards,
Ric

I know got banned in his Alphie mutation for stating, on a memorial thread to the murdered students at Va. Jeff dropped an MIRV on his ass for that.
He also got banned at Jules Crittenden’s place when he, in so many words, wished then Major john harm on his upcoming mission to Iraq.
He’s also echoed the thor meme that Russia won WWII and the US was merely a bit player as well as opining that Neville Chamberlain (one of his aliases) was “right” when he signed the Munich accords.
There is so much more but I get tired talking about it.

and yes i suppose you’re correct. it would have to be incoherent and ambivalent, in both celebrating and dissing ‘flyover country.’
and, semi-OT, but this reminds me of something from when i was in gradual school/TAing… when jeff koons first had that show of his ginormous fake hummel and other granny’s mantle type porcelains, including the infamous one depicting michael jackson and bubbles, i had a huge argument with a bunch of my colleagues. i really liked koons, still sorta do (but not in the same way.) and i thought the work was clever. but all my leftard art damaged friends hated the piece, and were deeply offended by it. and i tried to get them to ’splain to me why. and tho they were mostly spouting jargon with no content a few were sort of able to explain their anger. and what it boiled down to was this: i hate this art, not because it makes fun of people like my grandma and the things that suchlike people enjoy, but because my grandma might actually see it and might like it and she wouldn’t properly understand that it was intended to insult and hurt her. therefor it sucks.
um kya… i am so glad to not be in that world of stupid anymore. srsly.

I dunno, I rather like the idea of this NEA project. Starbucks closed a bunch of locations this past year. Just think of how many unemployed baristas this makework project will get off the dole!

There was a former ACORN board member, Michael McCray (I think) on Lou Dobbs’ show tonite. He was really good, and is combatting ACORN from his position as a former Board member.

It’s amazing that snowbunny has gone this long without even saying something smart by accident. If he was just slapping his dick on the keyboard and then hitting “send” his odds of not beclowing himself would improve.”
Prove that that’s not what he’s doing.

If he was just slapping his dick on the keyboard and then hitting “send” his odds of not beclowing himself would improve.
You’re assuming that his dick is long enough for this task. It’s more likely that he’s flinging his poo at the keyboard.

That one day story being buried just raised its head again on my local news radio station. A relative of the founder of ACORN apparently stole about one million dollars from the organization ten years ago and it was never reported to the authorities.

Is it still no big deal if the story lasts a month?

I once did stock replies to nishi; they consisted of using the names of IJN warships.
I had fun with that, especially deciding where to put the punctuation marks.
Example: “Haruna, Mogami Chitose? Shigure! Akagi Kaga!”
have fun making your own replies.

OTOH, maybe you should get a self-cleaning litterbox. See http://www.litterbox-central.com/litter-box/ for discussions about the various types.

From the Klavan link, a pet peeve of mine:
If you are doing it for the money, you are a craftsman, not an artist. That is why I have always held anyone involved with the NEA with utter contempt. If you can make money honest money doing what you love and feel, that’s fine and God bless you. But patronage by any other name smells just as bad.
Comment by SBP on 9/21 @ 10:55 pm #
#241:
Hmm… I’d say that an artist tries to make an original statement, while a craftsman focuses on perfecting his technical control of the medium. One person can be both, of course.

I once watched a guy TIG weld an aluminum motorcycle frame. Welds like dimes laid one atop the other on every weld on the whole frame. He raised what he did for a living to the level of art, and to watch was poetry.I think when you take what you are passionate about and put your whole self into it so that it absorbs you totally you make it art.
