‘Hundreds of thousands’ [Darleen Click]

Click on the screenshot image to see the NBC report on the Washington D.C. Tea Party. I want to feature this one for two reasons. One, I have paused it at the .52 second point to show the image of the crowd moving past a flag at half mast — an image similiar to one that Michelle Malkin had up via a traffic cam (I took my own screenshot) that had hysterical Leftcultists accusing Malkin of “fakery”.

Second, unlike ABC, this report actually features the Tea Party instead of using it as a segue to cover Obama’s [much much smaller] healthcare “rally”.

@.35 Tom Costello: “Park Police estimate the crowd at tens of thousands, our own people think hundreds of thousands of people were here to have a voice, or to express their voice to Capitol Hill. So many people that DC police had to close down Pennsylvania Avenue to accomodate everybody making their way to the national mall. Their message: No to runaway government and No to government healthcare.”

The report makes it clear that this was a coalition of groups, a cross-section of America and, truly, grassroots.

Somewhere, Nancy Pelosi is dialing for more botox.

************************************
The Washington DC Tea Party wasn’t the only rally yesterday. Donald Douglas of American Power reports from Los Angeles – in front of the Federal Building on West Wilshire.

Amazing. The Past Tense Media gets one thing right. Is this a trend, or a broken watch being accurate twice a day?

Oh, and I see the “astroturfing” smear has gone down the memory hole.

Somewhere, Nancy Pelosi is dialing for more botox.

If her forehead gets any tighter, she can find a gig as a snare drum.

I was there. I was in the crowd all the way down Pennsylvania Avenue. I saw the flag at half-staff. There were so many people that we were unable to get close enough to see the speakers at the Capitol steps, and still the crowd stretched back all the way to Freedom Plaza, over a mile.
Maybe there weren’t a million people there, but there were certainly several hundred thousand.

  6. Comment by Joe on 9/13 @ 1:54 pm #

I am no expert on crowd estimating, but that was no football game. Unless my eyes are lying, that is a completely different magnitude of crowd. I would go with a million, give or take a couple of hundred thousand.

Robert Stacy McCain said the crowd was metered (early on) at almost 500,000, so guessing a million is not that crazy.

Mail Online: Up to two million march to US Capitol to protest against Obama’s spending in ‘tea-party’ demonstration

    With An Important Qualifier

The question isn’t if 2010 will bring the third American Revolution since the seventies. It’s if — as always — the damn Republicans will do something meaningful with it. Like term limits, anti-lobby legislation, and sunsetting half the laws in the place. With that as a framework, government monopolies on everything from “education” to myriad interferences in the private sector could actually occur.

  8. Comment by Dennis D on 9/13 @ 2:21 pm #

Perhaps it is time for a new party. Something that will attract Middle Class Democrats. Push traditional American values with less emphasis on relgion although we know they go hand in hand.

    MSNBC ran this?

This may be a distinction without a difference, but that was an NBC Nightly News piece that resides online at the MSNBC site, as there is no NBC News site.

Still, holy shit on both counts, NBC and the size of that crowd. I was at the Million Moonbat March in Sept ‘06, and this looks significantly larger that that one. Also, that one had a significant counter-protest contingent that this one doesn’t seem to have. Damn.

They’re scared all, scared by a larger turnout than they have ever mounted on DC; bigger than the (far less than) million-man-march, and much bigger than the wO!n’s! inauguration crowd; even though all of the liberal succubus federal workers were given the day off to worship dear leader’s installment…

So when they resort to the worst behavior we’ve seen in some time, it’s because of the fear…That, and their heralds at the NYT have basically said the public option is finished, as well as essentially the Obamacare bill as written in the House of Representatives…

Get used to it, I figure they’ll be in attack mode for the next few weeks at least…

Re #30, Bob: Spot on! The lefties are wetting their pants over 9/12, ObamaCare flaming out, and in general the failure and ineptitude of The Once™.

My only concern is that Obama, being the ultimate narcissist that he is, simply can’t accept failure, and decides to go for broke with the so-called “reconciliation” option. Ramming ObamaCare down our throats with his fist would seal his reputation as a Marxist, but I doubt that he really cares about that, since he knows it already.

So I expect that he is actively considering just that right now.

    this is hilarious –

Some of the protesters had traveled farther than just the distance between their home town and Washington. Dr. David Levine, a psychiatrist from Rockford, Illinois, was Ramsey Clark’s volunteer press secretary when the ultra-liberal former U.S. attorney general ran for the Senate from New York in 1976. Now, Levine, wearing a faded NEWT GINGRICH 2008 t-shirt, was on the streets of Washington in a crowd of conservatives. What accounted for the change? “It started when liberals just stopped making sense to me,” Levine said. “I was listening to NPR, and nothing was making sense. So I started reading more and more conservative things, and here I am.”

For Christy Smith, who handles sales for a shipping company in Houston, this rally, and the tea party she attended in April, were the first time she had been to a protest since the early 1980s, when, as part of the Tulsa Peace Coalition, she tried to stop a U.S. military train carrying nuclear warheads bound for American Pershing II missiles in Europe. “I was a bit radical on the other side,” Smith says. “I’ve had a long journey.” Now, she worries about the nation’s debt and wants to see tort reform and term limits.

    So true JeffS.,
But you make a good point; Obama will try to use the nuclear option on this bill, to ram it down the country’s throat; after all, he won!

But I predict if that is his course, he’ll have a lot tougher time selling the moderates and Blu Dogs on joining him in that action. After all, they’ll have to face the test of re-election in 2010, while he’ll have the luxury of another 2 years…

And, perhaps more importantly, between Obamacare, the coming cap-n-tax furfight, the high level of unemployment that his man Larry Summers warned we would suffer for the next few years, continued high defecit spending, and the inevitable coming tax hike, let’s just say that people’s memories may not be a short as Obama and the liberal Democrats would like to believe…

Obama, Pelosi, and Reid are preparing to drive the Democrat party over a cliff, and not as many non-liberals are going with them on that dive as they think!

How can you expect a group of people who are proven science deniers, less educated and predominantly white, religious and southern to understand that this country is headed for disaster if the health care system is not reformed? They fear change. Conservatism by it’s very nature is REGRESSIVE - you know the opposite of progressive (as in forward thinking). This is the level we’re dealing with here… most of these idiots think the president is an illegal alien Kenyon muslim.

I’m thinking you don’t really know what meaning is attached to the word “progressive.” Not surprised.

Honestly, you’ve just proven yourself too stupid to argue with.

Theas you lie almost as good as your boy Obama,
But what is this about Nazi signs? Were you flashing back to a Berkley BusHitler rally or something? Because that’s the only place that swastika’s were on parade, save for Pelosi’s mind…

And what is this “fascist conservatism” clap trap? To start, nazi’s were SOCIALISTS; read a histiry book occasionally. And if anyone is fascist, well, hello-it’s your boy Obama again. He’s the pnly one nationalizing banks, the auto industry, and who desires the same for the energy and health care sectors of the economy…

And science deniers? I don’t think so, especially here at PW; I personally hold a graduate degree in aerospace engineering-and not the slacking modern version, mine is in both aeronautics and astronautics. I think that you would find many here who are highly educated, thoughtful individuals. The same is true throughout the groups that oppose the collectivization of our nation. Indeed, many of those folks have a much better grasp on history and the intent of the founders of our nation that you breathless lefty mouth-breathers ever will…

I’m surprised at the rest of your stereotypes Theas; especially coming from an enlightened member of the party of multi-culturalism and tolerance. So you can tolerate the Jeremiah Wrights and Louis Farrakhans of the nation, just not provincial southerners, eh? Muslims who want to reduce you to dhimmitude are fine folks, but the eeeevoll Christians are intolerable…

And the fear thing? You have got to be kidding me. I reming you that Obama too warned of fear mongering on Wednesday; right before he went on to warn that a lot more people would die and go bankrupt and the economy crippled for years if his phony-baloney health care legislation was not passed immediately. Now I don’t know about you, but arguing against something just prior to invoking that which you decry is not too effective a strategy with thinking people…

Oh, and Mr. elite intellect, consevatism is conservatory, not regressive; try and at least be able to get definitions right when mounting your prejudicial and specious arguments…

Talking points don’t work here son, people here tend to use their heads. And spare more your moral authority based on race; my ancestry is one of the trump suits in your identity politics deck, so that argument bites the dust too.

Less talking points, more reason, less stereotypes; be classically disinterested and not ideologically invested. Because the arguments should revolve around the good of our nation and progeny, and not what is expedient for Obama, the socialists, or even you…

Great post. Sums up the situation quite well, I think. However, when it is now shown in surveys that Republicans are “less educated and predominantly white, religious and southern” as you note, I fear you cast pearls before swine. Trying to reason with them is, as Barney Frank noted, like “arguing with a kitchen table”. They cannot match either wits or logical arguments with the Left, so they do Junior High School level things such as putting square mustaches on Obama or Painting him as the Joker, or going into self-indulgent disruptive tirades at town halls. Then Joe Wilson blames his racist outburst on a “Town Hall Moment” as if it were some kind of normal thing to do because Re-thugs the country over have been doing it and thinking they are winning some kind of argument. Pathetic and sad actually. Unfortunately, stupidity can’t be cured.

The educational distribution of Democrats is bimodal, with both high school dropouts and those with advanced degrees breaking Dem.

Progressives are only interested in progressing their political power; and certainly could give a fig about individualism and personal liberty…

Socialism/communism are systems where the rights of individuals are bestowed on them by the benevolently tyrranical government. In contrast, our democratic republic specifies limit’s on the power of government in order to preserve personal liberty as much as possible…

Progressives are only interested in increasing the power of the state over the individual; not recognizing that the government recieves it’s limited authority from the people themselves…

You all use the term progressive revealed it’s statist, collectivist, ideology in the 60’s and 70’s; an ideology antithetical to classic American values. They’ve tried to morph into “progressives” in order to hide their well known intent from the people. But that jig is up, people are getting wise to it. The folks see “progressives” for the statist, anti-liberty types that they are, and that’s why so many gathered in DC this past Saturday to protest the direction that Obama and the progressives have taken, and want to take, this country in…

    Theas,
Your “Think Progress” link is of dubious factual value, as I wouldn’t put them past photoshopping or staging photos to suit their narrative.. And even if they could be trusted as legitimate, you once again have demonstrated questionable intellect since there were no nazi references in any of their pictures anyway…

And did you actually read the Gallup link you posted? I think not, because aside from the widely varying and conflicting survey’s outlined, the results were actually split 50-50. And can easily be explained by devout fundamentalist religious people being sampled in the poll…

Once again, you mult-culti types embrace and celebrate all religions, whether legitimate or simply Shirley MacLain cult like groups, but have complete intolerance of Christians-even though Catholics and Evangelics account for most of Obama’s margin of victory in 2008!

You hardly own me, son. You couldn’t even aford to rent me…

  102. Comment by Abe Froman on 9/13 @ 7:05 pm #

Theas kind of reminds me of william yelverton in that he continually throws out stats that don’t mean what they think they mean. He’s kind of a dummy like that.

He seems to labor under the impression that all people in blue states vote Democrat and all people in red states vote Republican. And he’s not smart enough to deduce from this evolution poll that it was posed as a “big band” vs. “Creationism” question which is a far more complicated matter than simply being anti-science. But the guy is just working offthe narrative he was given so what can you expect?

“Tom Davis, a former Republican Congressman from Virginia, explained how “the politics of culture has wounded the GOP’s mass appeal” in the recent years:

Politics has been defined by culture over the last few cycles, and we’ve become a rural party and a Southern party. We’ve been losing inner suburbs and the like. A lot of this was the policies of the Bush administration.

He also said that, in most cases, people with higher education vote for Democrats, while the less educated vote Republican:

The high education areas Obama carried – 78 of the 100 counties with the highest education. McCain carried 88 of the 100 counties with the lowest education.”

And Abe is right, had he enjoyed stellar academics at Columbia, as a black man in NYC he would have had a muuuuuuuuch nicer entry level job…

Do you know what has really driven college tuition costs? How about the great surplus of money available in grants, scholarships, and government sponsored loans. Just as the deluge of money directed by CRA from Fannie/Freddie helped inflate the housing bubble, so too has the amount of public money thrown into the system fueled the cost of higher education…

Just as the government pays maore than private sector organizations for just about anything, so too have they paid more to educate poor, minority, and gender preferred students. Oh and guess what happens when a large state school’s coffers run dry? Surprise!, the government bails them out of the hole…

I’m just getting started mullet..For the first six years of the Bush Administration — when Congress was under Republican control — the President did not follow through on his six-year-old campaign promise to increase the maximum Pell Grant congress had an opportunity to address the rising cost of attending college by reducing excessive subsidies going to student loan lenders and using those savings to substantially increase need-based aid to all students eligible for Pell Grants. But Rethuglicans have other priorities: cutting $12 billion from the student loan program and using it to pay for tax breaks that primarily benefit the wealthy. Only a very small amount of additional savings from the budget reconciliation bill went to student aid, and only a small subset of Pell-eligible students are eligible for this additional aid. Which sucks for you because you voted your chances at not remaining a fuck-witted repub imbecile right out the window..

Much of the decrease is based on a 2006 funding level inflated by one-time costs for Hurricane Katrina relief. WTF! Underfunded Po’ Child Left Behind and Title I. The Po’ Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was supposed to provide a substantial increase in federal funding to go along with its accountability requirements. But the Bush Administration and Republican-controlled Congress failed to fund fully NCLB programs. Each year, the gap between the authorized and appropriated levels had grown wider. At the levels proposed in the President’s Fiscal Year 2009 Budget, NCLB programs would be underfunded by a cumulative total of over $85 billion. American public education is the backbone of our democracy wheteher your pappy learned you that or not is deceptive in social and economic ways as well. Needs to be abolished. I’m not much of a blogger, but I felt compelled to respond to some of the more virulent comments being posted this evening. Much seems to be made of the fact that one side or the other has more college graduates. I have a Master’s degree (albeit in English) and I teach both high school and college students. My husband and I have a farm and we live in Texas. We don’t attend church, but are tolerant of those that do. We are also Republicans. Do we agree with everything the party does? No. However, as a voracious reader and fan of the Constitution, I am concerned with the direction this country is taking. I am also concerned about the tenor of the debate. The level of venom is quite frightening (on both sides). I spend my days trying to teach my students the fine art of debate, rhetoric, and how to avoid fallacious argumentation. I would enjoy seeing the level of discourse ramped up a notch to thoughtful debate rather than who can call whom the most horrible name.

“Elbow licking, booger eating, ass picking retard,” from the Old English “dumb ass, dumb shit.” Scholars have traced modern usage to Bugs Bunny, “What a maroon,” and more recently to Dick Cheney–”He’s (she’s, it’s) an asshole. The accepted response is “Big Time!”

If you actually read much of the comments through the numerous threads you will be hard pressed to find a more intelligent group of commenters willing to engage in debate.

However, trolls are for thumping because the Left rarely argues or debates in good faith. As you can see, the Left doesn’t consider heretics and apostates of its dogma as worthy of any consideration. For the non-left, those that disagree are mistaken. For the Left, those that disagree are evil.

I suspect you’re correct. Krystal is no lawyer. I work/worked with so many in the DA office and while there are some who let their degrees go to their head, I’ve never seen one write/talk like a 15 y/o who swiped mom’s Blackberry.

I don’t know about where you work Darleen, but all the DA’s I know in NYC and New Jersey are exceedingly well educated. It’s a very desirable job, especially in the early stages of a career. But I also know lawyers who are who are dumb enough to light their hair on fire in the sun with a magnifying glass. Krystalx being among them wouldn’t shock me. Which has jack shit to do with ObamaCare.

Why is your answer to every question about ObamaCare “BUT, BUT, BUT, BOOOOOOOOOSH!!!!!!”

  280. Comment by JeffS on 9/13 @ 10:46 pm #

    #260, whatshisname:

Ironically, health care reform is critical to deficit reduction.

Ironically, Obama and the Democratic Congress has yet to offer a health care reform plan that doesn’t add to the deficit. All of the “savings” come from accounting tricks, shuffling Medicare funds around, and arbitrarily declaring benefits where there be none (e.g., the preventative medicine ponzi scheme). The CBO says so, as do a lot of other economists, doctors, and other professionals.

You know, they want people to be polite; they want people to listen to each other.

Equally ironically, Obama and his minions have pretty much refused to listen to other ideas.

David Axelrod, for example, brushed off a decent suggestion for improving health insurance, apparently because it widened competition without the public option (i.e., government controls).

President Obama hasn’t meet with GOP leaders to discuss health care reform since April. Specifically:

“Earlier this year, GOP leaders sent a letter to the president in May stating that they would like to work with the administration to find “common ground” on healthcare reform.

But the administration responded with a tersely worded letter indicating that they had healthcare reform under control.”

So all the Prezshizzle did tonight was what he did last Wednesday: offer the same empty talking points he has been offering all along. No change in his position. And no new plan, either.

Some “listening”, dude. Pretty much what he and the other Dhimmicrats have been doing all along. Their definition of “teamwork” is “I’ll tell you what to do, and you’ll do it!”

That doesn’t work in a free society. Maybe in Chicago, but this ain’t Chicago, it’s America.

Yes, it’s always a hoot when someone faceplants while correcting already-correct grammar, after having already compiled a trainwreck of screwed up contractions and possessives.

The tweaker has probably not gotten a JC degree yet. Not that there’s anything wrong with our local institutions preparing the unwashed for higher education, but it’s just an occasional step on the way to a JD, for those who slacked in high school. Chin up, krystalx, only a few more years and some large state university will, undoubtedly, gladly take you in undergraduate studies.
