Yes, Congress is not the British Parliment and Joe Wilson’s emotions and frustration got the best of him, but the pearl clutching and vapors by the Democrats who have made a vibrant industry of calling Republicans and conservatives liars, Nazi and worse is a hoot. And how short the memory (via William Jacobson)
TED KOPPEL (ABC host): When the president talked about the bankruptcy of Social Security, there were clearly some Democrats on the floor who thought that that was taking it too far. And they did something that, apparently, no one at this table has ever heard before. They booed. [ABC, Nightline, 2/2/05; Koppel's panel consisted of former Bush adviser Mary Matalin, former Reagan chief of staff Ken Duberstein, and former Clinton speechwriter Michael Waldman]JOHN ROBERTS (CBS White House correspondent): At a couple points in this address, it looked more like the British Parliament than the United States Congress. I’ve never heard the minority party shout at the president during the State of the Union address. [CBS, post-speech coverage, 2/2/05]
JOE SCARBOROUGH (former U.S. representative (R-FL) and MSNBC host): After the Democrats booed and hissed, Republicans were on the floor saying, you know, we never once did that to Clinton. So every time he would talk about Social Security, the roars got a little louder. And they got behind their president. [MSNBC, Hardball, 2/2/05]
BOB BARR (former U.S. representative (R-GA) and CNN contributor): It will be a very, very difficult battle as we saw by the unprecedented and, I think, highly improper virtual booing of the president when he simply said that the system is going to be bankrupt and the time is now to fix it. [CNN, Inside Politics, 2/3/05]
JOE WATKINS (radio host and CNN substitute host): Did you hear it? Certainly not the polite protocol usually practiced when a president speaks to Congress. If a Democrat one day delivers a State of the Union address, I hope the Republicans won’t lower themselves to such a disrespectful level. I hope last night’s behavior by a few lawmakers doesn’t set a new precedent, that both parties can agree to remain civil, even when voicing disagreements.[...] PAUL BEGALA (CNN host): Let me correct your history — 1993, I was with President Bill Clinton in that House chamber when he addressed a joint session of Congress. And Republicans heckled him when he cited Congressional Budget Office statistics about the deficit. [CNN, Crossfire, 2/3/05]
JOHN GIBSON (FOX News host): Maryanne Marsh, what did you think of those audible jeers, boos, for the president? It sounded a little like the House of Commons: that grumbling that comes from the back-benchers when they don’t like something [British Prime Minister] Tony Blair said. That isn’t very common for state of the union speeches, is it?MARYANNE MARSH (Democratic strategist): I don’t ever remember hearing it, and was very surprised. But I have to say at least the good news is the Democrats are fighting and they’re on offense. And they’re more united than they’ve ever been against George Bush and the Republicans. [FOX News, The Big Story with John Gibson, 2/3/05]
Wilson understandably voiced his frustration with Obama duplicity
Technically, Obama was correct that his plan does not cover illegal aliens because Obama has no plan that has been released, only concepts. So if Obama says his plan doesn’t cover illegals, then by definition it does not cover illegals — at least until we see the language in his plan. Similarly, the Senate HELP Committee bill defines an “eligible individual” in numerous places throughout the bill to include only citizens and legal residents (including for the public option, at page 111 of the bill). So using the two measures, the non-existent Obama bill and the draft Senate HELP Committee bill which was not a full Senate proposal, Obama was correct.
But if the standard is the full House Bill, HR3200, then it appears that Obama was incorrect. There is nothing in HR3200 that excludes illegal aliens from the various coverage provisions (with a few limited exceptions). The Congressional Research Service agrees with this assessment
And the rest of this rehashed, regurgitated summer stump speech was all sizzle, no steak
Obama did not seem to be advancing a very detailed plan, but rather championing some vague generalities. And when you line these generalities up, they form a very peculiar and implausible picture. It will cost $900 billion, involve no tax increases for the middle class and no Medicare benefit cuts for the elderly, but not add a dime to the deficit. The basic prerequisites for risk-based insurance will be rendered illegal, but the public is assured that insurance arrangements need not change-or rather that they will only improve. To try to sneak these glaring contradictions past his listeners, the president engaged in some familiar misdirection. He said the government would not force people to lose their existing insurance. But the question of displacement is not about force: employers currently provide insurance not because they are forced to do so (they are not) but because a combination of policy and labor market pressures lead them to choose to do so. Change those pressures and coverage arrangements will change for millions.
He insisted that “no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions,” but those dollars would be used to fund insurance that would pay for abortion, and new rules would require more insurers to pay for it. He insisted the public plan would not be subsidized by the public (though he then compared it to public universities, which are subsidized by the public). But the problem with that plan is that it would have regulatory advantages and negotiating power that would allow it to price private insurers out of the market, not that it would be directly subsidized in ways its competitors were not.
To pass off this misdirection (not to say dishonesty), he accused his opponents of dishonesty. There won’t actually literally be panels of people deciding that elderly patients should die, he said. That’s a relief. To argue that cutting hundreds of billions of dollars from Medicare will in any way reduce benefits is just plain lying, he insisted. [...]
Obama concluded with a painfully inappropriate abuse of the memory of the late Senator Ted Kennedy-calling by name on several Republican friends of Kennedy’s, as if to shame them into voting for a bill they do not support because failing to do so would be a failure of friendship. Is this how a president behaves? Using the memory of the recently deceased as a club with which to pound upon the man’s friends?
That’s how this president behaves. Never let a crisis or a corpse go to waste.

Comment by Squid on 9/10 @ 8:10 am #
Why wait for Geraghty? The article itself states that it was a poll of people who watched the speech, not registered voters. The end of the linked article states:
The sample of speech-watchers in this poll was 45 percent Democratic and 18 percent Republican. Our best estimate of the number of Democrats in the voting age population as a whole indicates that the sample is about 8-10 points more Democratic than the population as a whole.
So yeah, color me not-real-surprised. If one considers the unclassified 37% of the audience to break down along similar lines as those who professed a party affiliation, we can expect that two-thirds of them were probably favorably disposed to begin with. A 14% bounce is hardly surprising when the audience consists mostly of supporters and people sitting on the fence waiting to be reassured.
Cliff’s Notes version: The information gained from CNN’s viewers is almost as valuable as that garners from their on-air “talent”.

The only reason I even listened to the speech was that I was on Ace’s live blog of the event. Otherwise I would have had the teevee off, and wouldn’t have ended up listening to all the lies and misdirections that came out of our president’s mouth. It was unbelievable. He has no shame. The fact that he talked about small government at the end was… I don’t have the words.

Done learnt me some history! Thanks, O’Brain! See, that’s called “citing a fact” rather than the Republican method of “pulling a fact from your ass”. You guys can learn more about your proud conservative heritage at:

Still no testimonial as to the source of your race fixation Mr Dover? How come? Are you wanting to keep it a secret known only to yourself? Surely sharing it with others won’t cause it to be taken from you will it?
Comment by ben_dover on 9/10 @ 1:22 pm #
I’m sorry sdferr, I don’t understand. To what racial fixation do you refer?
Oops. That was too civil, I know. Sorry, I’m still learning the local culture.

Ben_stupid,
What part of “conservatives’ former preeminent position within the “NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY” don’t you understand?”
These so-called Dixiecrats were part of the Democratic Party. They were, in no shape or form, attached to the Republican party.

So again, where did you come by it, this race thing of yours? Was it pressed upon you from outside yourself? Or were you born with it, whole and ready to go, instead? Did you take to it like a duck takes to water or was it more like the kid who can’t carry a tune to save his life forced to sing Italian Madrigals in mandatory choir class at school?
Comment by ben_dover on 9/10 @ 1:34 pm #
Blake, I said “ideologically, the Dixiecrats were a lot closer to the Republican party of today.”
I didn’t say that they were “attached” to the Republican party. You’re engaging in a logical fallacy commonly called a “Straw Man” defense, or more accurately, disambiguation. Though I’m not privy to the contemporary uses of the word it seems odd to me that Mr Dover would have it that “disambiguation” be taken as something akin to a logical fallacy, does it not?
At least judging from the surface and working inward, it looks as though disambiguation would mean something like “sorting out multiple and hence possibly confusing meanings attributable to one word, an ambiguous word”. Which, on the whole, would appear to be a help to reason rather than a stumbling block, as the various fallacies prove to be. Or am I simply missing something here?
Comment by SBP on 9/10 @ 5:24 pm #
At least judging from the surface and working inward, it looks as though disambiguation would mean something like “sorting out multiple and hence possibly confusing meanings attributable to one word, an ambiguous word”.
That’s exactly what it means.
–verb (used with object), -at⋅ed, -at⋅ing.
to remove the ambiguity from; make unambiguous: In order to disambiguate the sentence “She lectured on the famous passenger ship,” you’ll have to write either “lectured on board” or “lectured about.”

Hey guess what? Wilson’s top campaign supporter is the health care industry – paying him nearly a half million bucks over the course of his career, now why would he want to reform anything?
But what would you expect from a southern redneck member of the “sons of the confederacy” like Wilson?
The present bill says clearly: SEC. 246. NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS. Obama is working on a bill that will address concerns by the CRS.
Obama kicked ass. It was a game changer. Polls show Obama’s health care reform approval jumped 14%, one in five naysayers came over to support reform. The rest of the GOP like Wilson remain in the know-nothing Palin-esque far right Civil War reenacting racist morons that are tryingf to spread lies and fear. Death Panels!!!!
It was great to see the contrast between an eloquent and intelligent President and a belligerent dumb redneck – the fool that represents the far right morons. They are incapable of negotiation. Obama has no business discussing anything with these imbeciles.

Rep. Wilson Outburst Leads Senate Dems to Close Loophole in Health Reform Bill
In the Senate,
Democrats in the so called “Gang of Six,” began moving quickly to close the loophole Rep. Joe Wilson helped bring to light with his outburst during President Obama’s address to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday night.
Snip
“The Congressional Research Service has indicated that indeed the bills that are before Congress would include illegal aliens,” Wilson said. “And I think this is wrong.”
Indeed, the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service study found that the House health care bill does not restrict illegal immigrants from receiving health care coverage.
House Republican Minority Leader John Boehner amplified the complaint that without proof of citizenship, illegal immigrants could be insured.
“There were two opportunities for House Democrats to make clear that illegal immigrants wouldn’t be covered by putting in requirements to show citizenships,” he said. “Both of those amendments were, in fact, rejected.”
In the Senate, Democrats in the so called “Gang of Six,” a group of bipartisan senators on the Senate Finance Committee which is the last panel yet to release its bill, began moving quickly to close the loophole that Wilson helped bring greater attention to.

Stated as Obama put it — “There are now more than 30 million American citizens who cannot get coverage,” — I don’t think the statement can stand as a defensible proposition. “Cannot get coverage” just doesn’t do justice to the myriad reasons (30 million of ‘em after all) these people don’t happen to have coverage. Many choose not to have coverage though they can afford to purchase it. Mike Tanner cited a study (Pauly and Bundorf) last night which appears to conclude that cohort runs from 25% to 75% (pretty wide margin!) but still, even at the little end of the scale that’s a hell of a lot of people.

Except…HR 3200 makes it illegal for any medical clinic or hospital personnel to ask about or require proof of citizenship (Obama’s push for drivers license for illegals anyone?). The Repubs tried to strip that portion of the bill and were voted down across party lines.
Illegals will be covered ipso facto.

That ability is not working out in the real world of politics. The world outside the cloistered settings of Harvard Law, Hyde Park, and Community Organizing.
Obama is not used to having anyone disagree with him. He has moved through the world seeing barriers fall and believing they have done so by the force of his charm, his intellect. Seemingly unaware of the band of thugs that clear the way for him. Like a royal who never gets his feet wet because others always throw down their cloaks.
When his feet finally hit the water the shock will be felt by us all. Last night he felt a single drop. A precursor to the flood to come.

George W Bush went to a field in Pennsylvania and he kept the jackals at 300 yards while he hugged, shook hands, hugged some more and listened to families who had lost loved ones. When I say “listened” I mean looked them in the eye, never looking at his watch, never interrupting to move on to the next family and listened until they got it all out.
I look at the man. With all the douchebags in Washington, George W Bush remained the class act that I describe above. And now with Obama in office, the circle is complete with the most classless individual ever to occupy the White House.
Obama might as well have a sign hanging around his neck that says ‘Hey! Look at me! I’m the president!’
Alan Keyes had it right, and if Ben_Dover disagrees, it means he’s a racist, because Alan Keyes is even blacker that Vijay Singh. You need to get off skin color Dover, it’s a loser.

But, we have found FOUR of Obama’s ARRA signs. It’s just like Mark Steyn says: a Sign proclaiming that this is a job funded by the ARRA (with an Obama logo next to it – ’cause that’s what it is, and anyone who says different is an idiot or liar) – anyway, a sign, some barrels, and not a damn person working.

Mr. Wilson hasn’t released any figures yet but when I called his office yesterday and made a donation the lady I talked to said the contribution had been pouring in from all over the country. Honestly she sounded like it totally surprised them, but that is my speculation because she never said that.
I saw where crAP went to South Carolina to see how many people they could get to bash him, but it seems to have sort of backfired since many said they were glad he said it and most said they would still vote for him.

Shorter version of Obama’s in Q & A form:
Q: What about the CBO’s report that the costs are underestimated and that the bill will add billions to an “unsustainable” deficit?
Obama: This talk of paying for the bill and red ink is divisive. The time for bickering is over.
Q: Um … Hookay what about this promise of billions of dollars saved by eliminating massive fraud in Medicare, a promise that every President and Congress has made and failed to accomplish since Carter?
Obama: Misrepresentations about our Aesop’s Fable promise to accomplish the impossible are partisan and bickering. Bickering no more, the time is!
Q: I … er … hmmm … well what about all of those peer reviewed studies from various medical researchers that plainly state that expanded preventative screening actually increases costs rather than saving money?
Obama: People who study studies are in and of themselves a study in studied obstruction. Bickering is bickery bicking! The time to end bickering bickly by bick bickety, bickety bickaroo!!
Q: [...]

But really I don’t care much about what a ignorant little man you are. It is a day to honor real victims, Not the perpetual whines and con men you hold in high esteem.

http://publicpolicypolling.blogspot.com/2009/09/wilson-in-trouble.html
Wilson trails Democratic challenger Rob Miller 44-43 in a PPP survey conducted Thursday night and Friday morning. 62% of voters in SC-2 disapprove of Wilson’s actions while just 29% think they were ok. By a 48-41 margin Republicans think what he did was fine, but independents are opposed to it by a 66-25 margin
If a fat white racist “son of the confederacy” Republican is in trouble in SC… then 2010 should be good!!

“Dean Debnam is a Democratic pollster and regular campaign donor. The chief executive officer of Workplace Options, he started Public Policy Polling, a Raleigh-based political research firm, in 2002 as a side business. The company uses automated dialers for polling, message testing for candidates and advocacy, such as a recent effort urging higher impact fees in Raleigh. Clients have included Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker, City Councilman Thomas Crowder and the Conservation Council of North Carolina. Respondents are found using voter rolls which are weighted to represent typical turnout. His wife, Stephanie Fanjul, ran for mayor in 1999.” from http://projects.newsobserver.com/under_the_dome/profiles/dean_debnam

Take a deep breath Theas. Don’t get too caught up in today’s leftard talking points. Wilson’s opponent should be getting cash rained down on him at the moment because that’s the way the left operates. If a politician urks you, finance his opponent and slime him. If a private citizen urks you, dig up dirt and get bureaucratic hacks to release private information. If a beauty pageant contestant shares the same view on gay marriage as Teleprompter Jesus, attack her and get her run out of the competition. If a purveyor of food for the dipshit secular religion of the left writes an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal about healthcare reform that’s at odds with the far left, boycott his stores.
And the best part is that lefty opinion-makers and activists can always rely on a steady stream of addled-brained zombies like yourself to mindlessly giggle out their talking points. But this will pass, and while you’re copy and pasting your horse race polling/contribution numbers like an Orangutan masturbating in front of families at the zoo, your fearless leaders are already at work developing your next batch of thoughts.

Abe Froman,
“mindlessly giggle out their talking points” Like “you lie” and “death panels”?? – that should be very easy for the Republican Party, since most of their constituency is relegated to the southern, rural areas, and the least educated parts of America where lunatic talk radio has the most impact. That is obvious.
CNN poll 9/9/09
“Do you think the policies being proposed by Barack Obama will move the country in the right direction or the wrong direction?”
Right Direction 70%
Wrong Direction 27%
“From everything you have heard or read so far, do you favor or oppose Barack Obama’s plan to reform health care?”
Favor 67%
Oppose 29%

I guess they haven’t posted that on his talking point memo, On second though that doesn’t really matter to his puppet masters does it?

Pardon the length but this has been on my mind all day.
My mom used to tell me that I should never pick at a wound while it was healing. The more I picked the longer it would take to heal and might leave a more prominent scar.
Some wounds should never heal, at least not completely.
Every 9/11 anniversary for the past eight years I have taken the time to plow through many of the films, testimonials and recordings of the awful day. I try not to worry about the masochistic idea of hearing and seeing horrific things that have been burned into my memory. Every year at this time I cry all over again
I watch various videos of the planes hitting the towers.
I see photos and film of terrified, desperate people jumping to their deaths.
I listen to that little girl speaking to her father on the one year anniversary of his murder, telling him that she tries not to cry because “he didn’t like it” and assure him that she leaves the light on in her bedroom just in case he may show up to kiss her goodnight.
I listen to the 911 calls from Kevin Cosgrove and Melissa Doi, alternately angry, full of pain and terrified as the last moments of their lives slipped away.
I sit and stare at that incredible Budweiser ad as the Clydesdales trot across country highways, cross the Brooklyn Bridge and bow before the skyline of Manhattan.
I ache for Betty Ong’s husband as he describes his last call from his flight attendant wife on United 93.
I watch and listen to “I Am Overcome” set to the images of the aftermath of the attack.
I always end with Todd Beamer’s wife describing the last call from her husband aboard that flight; about how much he loved her and their child to be born without him and the final, iconic “Let’s roll.”
and .. I cry, the tears as copious as as they were on that day and every day each year after.
That last choice is designed to fix defiance on my heart even as I struggle for forgiveness and reconciliation in my soul.
I know that I’m picking at the wound, but I don’t care. I don’t want this wound to completely heal and I want the scar to be visible and real. We now live in a time when it is more the policy of our government to act in appeasement and self blame rather than in defiance and righteousness. The very fact that our President decided that the anniversary of the the most violent attack upon our country’s shores should be a day of service sickens me in it’s attempt to deflect and sidestep. My defiance wins out over despair.
Every. Time.
I pray for God’s grace, in some inconceivable way, to comfort the thousands of families who lost loved ones and that He may heal the world of the evil that is Radical Islam. I also pray that He will keep us forthright and clear eyed in seeking justice for ourselves and the rest of the world in the face of tyranny and extremism.
By the next morning the bleeding will have stopped but the scar will remain. I hope it is visible until the end of my days.”
I think you would agree that was worthy of more than a single post so if you have a site or facebook page set up a link and spread the message: NEVER FORGET!

S.C.’s Wilson Rakes In $750,000 in Less Than 48 Hours !
Washington Post ^ | 9.11.09 | Paul Kane
With a political arms race in full force, Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) has raised almost $750,000 in less than 48 hours since his shout of “You lie!” to President Obama during the Wednesday address to Congress, almost matching the Internet-fueled haul of his likely Democratic opponent.
A senior GOP official said Wilson, who apologized to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel after the health-care speech but has since refused a more public apology, has turned his own previous sleepy campaign machine into an Web-friendly effort. Just as liberals have poured cash into the campaign of Rob Miller, who lost to Wilson by almost eight percentage points in 2008, conservatives are pouring contributions into Wilson’s campaign at an astonishing rate.

Well dumbass I guess you know who the Washington Compost is don’t you?
