YES WE CAN Will would like to maybe…ah screw it… [Darleen Click]

About that economy thing

Job losses may last well into 2010 to hit an unemployment peak close to 11%. That unemployment rate may be sustained for an extended period. [...]

How could this happen when Washington has thrown trillions of dollars into the pot, including the famous $787 billion in stimulus spending that was supposed to yield $1.50 in growth for every dollar spent? For a start, too much of the money went to transfer payments such as Medicaid, jobless benefits and the like that do nothing for jobs and growth. The spending that creates new jobs is new spending, particularly on infrastructure. It amounts to less than 10% of the stimulus package today.

Woohoo! And Obama has just done something really unprecedented — a Trillion Dollar deficit. I, for one, want to welcome our new Chinese Overlords.

Not to worry, I’m sure when ObamaCare is enacted we’ll see some of these clinics popping up in order to help struggling families.

LONDON – British conductor Edward Downes, a longtime stalwart at the Royal Opera and maestro of the first-ever performance at Sydney’s iconic Opera House, has died with his wife Joan at an assisted suicide clinic in Switzerland. He was 85 and she was 74.

The couple’s children said Tuesday that the couple died “peacefully and under circumstances of their own choosing” on Friday at a Zurich clinic run by the group Dignitas.

Such a brave, new world!

You mean paying people for not working results in fewer people working? C’mon…what kind of fucked up economics is that?

Speaking of being Sarah Palin’s fault on Al Sharpton’s radio show an idiot called in saying that she thought Palin had something to do with Michael Jackson’s death. If she has that kind of juice she can definitely fuck up the economy.

I’m not sure I get the problem with the assisted suicide piece. According to the article, “”After 54 happy years together, they decided to end their own lives rather than continue to struggle with serious health problems,”. It doesn’t appear as though these were two 30-something’s looking to make a statement.

Having seen two grandparents die within the last year and a half, both of whom had virtually no quality of life and were in constant pain for the past 4-5 years, I can’t understand how a society can’t come to grips with the reality that, at some point, it is more dignified to die under your own terms.

I had to watch my grandmother suffering in agony under hospice care. Just laying there, waiting to die. What is wrong with having the family come in, say they’re last goodbyes, and then having her life ended quickly and painlessly. Is it really necessary to prolong the pain and suffering?

Maybe I’m misreading what everyone is saying.

    Obama’s fault.
Just 6 months into his term, and he has completely reversed all of the good work done by George W Bush.
We were doing great until this moron came along.
Now, the economy is trashed, the military is stretched thinner than thin, the financial markets are in trouble, the auto industry if screwed up, the building industry is toast, people’s 401Ks are now closer too 200.5Ks (and falling), the stock market is down, Iran hates our guts, North Korea is threatening to bomb Hawai’i, our health care system is out of control, and unemployment is at almost 10%.

George W Bush was a great great president, the country was running along like a Swiss watch for the last 8 years, and all problems are Barack Obama’s fault.

I think Obama and his economic team thought that this was merely a “crisis of confidence,” meaning the economy would resume as soon as the feeling of “panic” was abated, so targeting the “stimulus” just was that important. As a matter of fact, I think you could have sold that idea up until GM went into bankruptcy. At that point, the banks had been tested and GM and Chrysler were “dealt with” so the feeling of crisis had abated, but it set the stage for the current situation.
Once there was a feeling that the worst of the crisis was over, the Obama agenda was left there, naked for all to see.
As the weeks have progressed, the unease of the underlying future consequences of the current “cap and trade” (somehow called an energy bill) and Obamacare bills started to suck the oxygen out of the normal recovery process.

The “big lie” was calling it a “Recovery Act” .. it was merely another spending bill, hardly targeted to stimulate the engines of the American economy, but rather the engines of the political agenda.
    Obama lied, the economy died.

I think Obama and his economic team thought that this was merely a “crisis of confidence,” meaning the economy would resume as soon as the feeling of “panic” was abated…”

That’s a pretty good assessment, after all, they knew that the had been talking don the economy for years in order to drive up the chances of a Democrat victory in s008. Coupled with the suspicion of course, based on past history, that Mr. Soros and his pals at the offshore hedge funds had been effectively “shorting” the US economy for some time prior to the election as well, in order to achieve the same results…

I’m sure that O!&Co. felt confident that once he was elected, and the organized market manipulations and economic gainsaying had ceased, that everything would come roaring back to life, and aided by a media only too happy to trumpet the meme of, “happy days are here again”, would be able to take credit for the economic rebound…

But it didn’t quite work out that way. Instead, things had moved past a tipping point and the complete collapse of the US financial and credit markets, a key component in the stock markets vigor and the public’s perception of bottomless wealth availability, drove the macro-economic conditions to a point they couldn’t have ever dreamed of during their disparaging of the Booooooosh! economy…

And so, both they and the rest of us now are in the unenviable position of reaping what we’ve sown…

Mort Zuckerman bears paying attention to especially regarding economic issues. He, like many others not directly involved in supporting Obama’s agenda are predicting another slide in the market and difficult times ahead. The only question I have is, If the media breathlessly talked about Boooosh!’s “jobless recovery” during the last 8 years when unemployment was at historic lows, how will they be able to credibly blame the coming years messes on Booooooosh! also? Especially in light of that twit Robert Gibbs recent pronouncement that this was now Obama’s economy…

Oh, and I like that slogan, “Obama lied, the economy died”, and plan to shamelessly take it up and insert it into my conversations with liberal Democrats as often as possible…

But I’ll at least wait for places in conversation where it’s appropriate, not like, you know, the Kos and Code Pinko crowd…

Enh. I’m not certain that it’s entirely fair to say that Obama fucked the economy alone. He inherited a mess. And there’s argument to be made that extending things like unemployment insurance was a needful palliative. But everything else has been the equivalent of pouring gasoline on a fire. BO could have said “let’s hunker down and muddle through. It might be a while, folks.” But he cast himself as SuperPrez, and told us that dropping $800 billion we don’t have would save the day. It didn’t, and now he owns it.

If he had any actual experience running anything that had a bottom line, he would have known about managing expectations. But since he had no executive experience to speak of before being installed in the Oval Office, he’s too busy smelling his own farts.

    I miss Bill Clinton.

They think unemployment “may” hit 11% next year? Are they smoking crack? We’ll hit 11% in a month or two. I think it’s very likely that this time next year we’ll be past 15%. Look at how very far corporate profits have fallen. (In fact, the only places really posting profits and giving out lavish bonuses are companies taken over bailed out by the US government.) Employment has a long way to fall when profits are off anywhere from 50% to 90%, and employment is only down about 6% (on top of a 4% baseline).

Of course, as this CBO chart makes plain, while the deficit went up right after Bush took office (and the Democrats controlled the Senate even then), the deficits steadily decreased after that (despite the Iraq / Afghanistan war) until FY2007. What happened then? Why, the Democrats took over Congress again.

You know, the part of the government that actually taxes and spends the budget.

Now that O! has the Executive branch and something the Republicans never had, a filibuster proof Senate, notice how the deficits are projected to explode based on the Rats’ proposals? Gee, that whole cause and effect thing is such a bummer.

Obama does not have to fix the economy, just hold off total meltdown till 2012. Rahm and Axelrod said it would work. Biden was not sure till he was told to shut up, or they would tie him up and gag him.

  41. Comment by geoffb on 7/14 @ 12:39 pm #

Republicans tend to grow both the economy and the budget with the economy growing faster than the budget which shrinks deficits and makes the government a smaller part of the economic pie. This is where the Democrats have a problem with the Republicans and growth. It is not that they wish the government to spend more and tax more, though that is the result, it is that they wish and work to make the government a greater and greater share of the economy.

Everybody always talks about taxes, government spending, and the economy in dollar terms. That is not the important thing. What is important is the percentage relationships. The percent of the total economy that goes to taxes, to government spending, and percent which is government controlled. Increasing that number is the goal for the left. It is what all of Obama’s programs are about. As “psycho…” said on the thor thread.

    “Yes. They want everything.”

  47. Comment by Andrew the Noisy on 7/14 @ 4:08 pm #

Sashal is fond of using words without considering their meaning. When he says “the military is stretched thinner than thin,” it’s because he heard someone whose opinion he trusts say so, and he passes it on in good faith. That those words may not mean what he thinks they mean simply has not occurred to him.

Militaries are often stretched by wars. This does not always mean they lose them. The US Army was stretched quite thin in 1777 & 1864, and still managed to triumph. I do not think that our current situation bears any resemblance to that one. I do not think it even bears any resemblance to 1972, either.

  48. Comment by Seth on 7/14 @ 4:53 pm #

The army is stretched thin only to the extent that we have to send people for multiple tours – hardly a novel thing in a time of war – and to the extent that we are somewhat loathe to grow the military by much.

I know this has nothing to do with the post… NE ways, Obama is a socialist. The only way socialism can ever succeed is if it kills poor, black and hispanic babies. That is why abortion needs to continue to be legal. So that the socialist government of Obama won’t have to support the poor with welfare and other government aid. Imagine this, if our taxes had to support millions upon millions of poor black and hispanic people – the government would go bankrupt… Everyone wants to live longer and people want to do this at all costs – even killing babies. Genocide of the poor and the weak – that’s the Obama story. He’s the Black Hero… Why do liberals and socialists talk about population control and yet want all these drugs and health care privilages for everyone to live longer? Talk about irony. If you liberals and socialists want to control population, then be the first to die! Why fund health care? Maybe it’s because of your selfishness and carelessness for your fellow man??? LOL! How ironic!
