From FOX:
Detainees, Even if Acquitted, Might Not Go Free
Obama administration said Tuesday it could continue to imprison non-U.S. citizens indefinitely.
Like the Bush administration, the Obama administration argues that the legal basis for indefinite detention of aliens it considers dangerous is separate from war-crimes prosecutions. Officials say that the laws of war allow indefinite detention to prevent aliens from committing warlike acts in future, while prosecution by military commission aims to punish them for war crimes committed in the past.
Johnson said such prisoners held without trial would receive “some form of periodic review” that could lead to their release.
Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a leading Republican on detainee policy, approved. “Some of them will be able to get out of jail because they’ve rehabilitated themselves and some of them may in fact die in jail,” Graham said. But “I don’t want to put people in a dark hole forever” simply “because somebody like Dick Cheney, or you fill in the blank with a politician, said so.”
Paraphrasing the adage: repeat it often enough and it has become true even within the very context of its untruth. Or if you prefer, what was once unassailable Troof is now untrue even if true.
Progressivism! Is there anything it can’t do?

I’m starting to believe that the greatest hoax of all time, greater than Bigfoot, AGW, or the great “Obama’s High IQ Hoax” is the “Two parties will provide a loyal opposition to go along with our system of checks and balances” hoax.

Well, no shit, Sherlock.
Hey, I’ve got an idea! Let’s leave it up to the military to figure that out. However, if Dick Cheney says so, I’m OK with putting Lindsay in a dark hole forever. Or if he doesn’t. Whatever.

How is this a partisan issue, explain that. What were your expectations? That you’d be able to go to Gitmo yourself and poke a stick through the prison bars and prod some Muslim in the gizzard? “Hey kids, here’s the one Dickey C. says is a terrorist! Ya! Ya! Look at him hop!”

Because to my mind, this should set the seethe-o-meter at these joints to 11. As I understood Obama’s pledge, the policies that underpinned Gitmo as a prison would be immediately reversed.

Obama calls for immediate withdrawal from Iraq
Associated Press
CLINTON, Iowa — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is calling for the immediate withdrawal of all U.S. combat brigades from Iraq, with the pullout being completed by the end of next year.
“Let me be clear: There is no military solution in Iraq and there never was,” Obama said in excerpts of the speech provided to The Associated Press.
“The best way to protect our security and to pressure Iraq’s leaders to resolve their civil war is to immediately begin to remove our combat troops. Not in six months or one year — now,” the Illinois senator says.”

Comment by Mr. Pink on 7/8 @ 10:51 am #
Yeah Obama is doing a great job thor and you should trust him. Here is a short list of bullshit that can be compiled with a simple google search.
This one makes me laugh. “I have worked to rebuild trust in government by allowing every American to go online and see how their tax dollars are spent.”
“Here’s what I can tell the American people: 95 percent of you will get a tax cut. And if you make less than $250,000, less than a quarter-million dollars a year, then you will not see one dime’s worth of tax increase.” I guess only people that make over 250 thousand dollars a year smoke, drink, buy gas, heat their homes, or very soon have their employers give them health care benefits.
“Is this money well spent? This is taxpayer money, it is going to be adding to the deficit short term and if we can’t justify it, then we’re not going to spend tens or hundreds of billions of dollars, just to make somebody happy, if it’s not good for the economy.” How is that stimulus working out?
“I don’t take a dime of their [lobbyist] money, and when I am president, they won’t find a job in my White House.” Hhahahahahah he violated that in his first week.
“When George Bush came into office, we had surpluses. And now we have half-a-trillion-dollar deficit annually. When George Bush came into office, our national debt was around $5 trillion. It’s now over $10 trillion. We’ve almost doubled it.” And what is Obama’s solution to his critique of Bush??? Why let’s fuckin quadruple the deficit. If that statement is not shameless hypocricy for political gain then I do not know what is. If only we could go back to half a trillion dollar a year deficits this jackass wants 3 trillion dollar a year ones.
“I can no more disown Rev. Wright than I can my own grandmother.” That one is my favorite.

Let me help you out Carin, this is part Obama’s doomsday speech if we did not pass his fuckin stimulus which noone read.

Fail Thor. Epic fail in fact.
As a grad student writing my masters thesis, I spent time at Fort Meade in 98-99 when they declassified all the US attache assesments from 1942-43..these were US officers attached to US embassy in Moscow whose job was to liaise with Red Army over questions of material and supplies.
Their analysis of Russian combat experience, based on real-time interviews and conversations with Red Army officers, was that supplies and food were a very big factor in remarkable turnaround in Russian efficacy. Example: Prior to Stalingrad, the Russians lost about 6-7 men KIA for every German; after Stalingrad, that dropped to 2-3 where it remained until German surrender. This was result of two things: The Germans got their best and most experienced soldiers killed and wounded critically to the point where they were not able to replace them, and the Russians finally had the supplies and morale to sustain offensive operations for an extended period of time.
Fortunately, i also was able to access the captured Gehlen org. documents (German military intelligence) which confirmed same, also at Fort Meade.
Ivan would have won regardless of US socks, Dinty Moore stew and gasoline. It just would have been in 1946 and cost an additional 2 million dead or so.
Comment by thor on 7/8 @ 12:20 pm #
As long as you’re into dreamy hypotheticals, how many millions of Americans do you think would have died if Hitler was Canadian and had the same military strength invading America as when he invaded Russia?
Let’s speculate with American blood and guts versus Russian. Maybe it’ll help you put a human face on those people, who were evil people, all Russians are evil, as you know, and all ‘tooopid too, not smart like Carin and the bunny woman, Maggie.

Comment by mcgruder on 7/8 @ 1:00 pm #
Thor, see the thing is this: its not a dreamy hypothetical. It really happened, in the way that Tuesday just happened. Everything I just told you were the statements of Russian officers to their US counterparts or German intelligence analyses…of why they were losing the fucking war. See, they concluded that the swag from U.S. was a real helping hand. Saved lives, kept the guys who bore the brunt of German war aims warm and fed, that sort of thing.
What’s dreamy and hypothetical is your keen metaphor, the Canadian line. What’s even better is the premise underlying your triple-A rated comeback: that it didnt happen. Cool.
I have just now spend some time on Amazon.com and E-Bay and I don’t see what you seem to have, which is this amazing projection machine, enabling you to assume and divert mental and emotional resources to issues and dilemma’s that have no grounding in reason. Slick though. Coming up with an organic and thoroughly imaginary American civilian hatred for their Russian counterparts. My two teens are always texting about going to Kiev and getting them some Ukranian scalps, never shut the f-ck about it on facebook either. Its always, “Dad, How long could it take US armor to get from Bavaria to the Dnieper-Oder line?” Probably your kids too, eh?

mcgruder, we have a lot of experience with thor. He’s something of a master of the ad hominem; you can tell he’s feeling insecure about something when he starts spraying crap around, usually about queers.
thor had the eye-opening experience of dealing one-on-one with Russians. Many of us — even some here — have had the same or similar experience(s), but thor is above all a self-important narcissist; those of us who came away with an even slightly variant set of conclusions do not agree with him, and therefore must be fools.
As to why they have “…some latent beef with us…”, it’s the same as with anybody else in the world: our system works better, imperfect as it is. I am old enough to remember watching Kruschev on TV, banging his shoe on the UN podium and promising to “bury you!” Unlike many people, I also recall the context — Nikita wasn’t threatening military overthrow or anything resembling it; he was claiming that the Russian (Soviet, then) system would succeed beyond its own wildest dreams, bringing plenty to all — they would bury us in consumer goods and the other products of Soviet industry and commerce. Precisely the opposite happened, of course. The American military is parasitic upon its consumer-goods industries; the Soviet consumer-goods industries were parasitic upon the military, and the result was economic stagnation waiting for Reagan-era tactics to give it the final push. Russians may know that in an intellectual sense; but they lived under the Soviet system well beyond the lifetime of anyone currently active, that is what they remember from school, and consciously or unconsciously that is what forms the basis of their expectations. That system is what is supposed to work, and when it does not they have no way to reach an accord with that on an emotional level. Therefore they (and thor, who has formed a bond with those elements of Russian society most likely to feel that way) end up feeling envious and put-down, and respond in all the usual ways.
It’s really no different from European jealousy. The damned Americans are low-class scum who ran away from their duties and responsibilities so long ago, and the rational expectation of European classists was that they would naturally fail — mere peasants and manual laborers could not, absolutely could not, even support themselves, let alone succeed, without the wise guidance of their betters. It didn’t work that way, and the Europeans are still smarting from it. Shows, too.
In the Russian case, it doesn’t help that they sometimes feel (justifiably, in many instances) that their contributions have been ignored. It’s not just WWII, either. The Rus took the real brunt of the invasions of the steppes tribes, reducing the impact on Europe — and it cost them horribly, not just in lost economic growth but in decimation of the economically active population and being forced to at least partially assimilate the invaders. It’s not an accident that the word for the beloved homeland, the rodina, shares a root with narod, which can best be translated as “screwed” in modern English usage.
Regards,
Ric

B Moe, the reason Alaska is a sensitive issue is because their loss of it was and remains a symptom of weakness.
Russians are very, very, very sensitive to feelings of weakness. It makes sense that they should feel that way — they really were weak, in fact well-nigh helpless, against the Kazakhs, the Mongols, and the other steppe tribes, and somewhere in the heart of every patriotic Russian is the solemn resolve, “never again!” That’s where the paranoia that everyone who’s dealt with Russians remarks on comes from. WWII just reinforced the lesson.
Unfortunately the conclusions gained from the lesson, and the resulting policies, have a strong tendency to be irritating to the neighbors and therefore counterproductive. It’s a pity.

Ric

thor,
I’m curious why you discount mcgruders research, using actual historical documents, as phony and competely dismiss it out of hand. The US documents were based on interviews with Soviet officers; and astoundingly they agree with the contemporary German intelligence analysts.
Do you think the Soviet officers were somehow sucking up to their American counterparts? This kind of defies the ordinarily proud nature of the Soviets, the Russians in particular…
“This was result of two things: The Germans got their best and most experienced soldiers killed and wounded critically to the point where they were not able to replace them, and the Russians finally had the supplies and morale to sustain offensive operations for an extended period of time.”
I personally think that this statement by mcgruder comes about as close as possible to succinctly explaining a very complex matter of history; that being how the Soviets were able to turn the tables on the Germans at Stalingrad and after…
Although I still disagree with your Soviet-centric view of the Nazi’s defeat, and the idea of “who won” WWII, I must agree that mcgruders points have merit…

Bob, it is a simple fact that a lot of the US-centric notions of how the war went are simply wrong.
The Germans had better gear, better-trained soldiers, and the advantages of the interior position; they had already placed their industry on a war footing (the treaty with Stalin allowed them space to do that) and organized their military forces. None of the Europeans had done any of that, and the US certainly had not; the Russians tried to, but didn’t have the industrial strength to accomplish the needed actions (which is one big reason Stalin signed the damn treaty).
Now, Germany is a small country and the people they wanted to blow away were much larger; but they had an answer to that — blitzkrieg, “lightning war”, get it over with while their advantages were overwhelming. The only reason it didn’t work was because the Allies were able to hold in a couple of critical places, allowing them to spin up to the conditions necessary to defend successfully.
American manpower was important but not really decisive; Russian manpower was much more important, but still not sufficient. What happened was, American industry got itself in gear to provide war materiél and worked overtime to provide it, and the Russians threw manpower at the problem. It took both to win. If the Russians hadn’t soaked up German soldiers, we couldn’t have gotten enough stuff across the pond to accomplish much; if we hadn’t thrown millions of tons of stuff across the pond, the Russian sacrifices would have been in vain.
But memories of death and dying are much stronger and more lasting than those of cranking out P39s and Jeeps in a factory, so the Russians tend to have a much greater emotional reaction — it’s personal, understandably so.
Regards,
Ric

Comment by mcgruder on 7/8 @ 6:12 pm #
Thor, actually you can’t fashion another opposing viewpoint on this. There isn’t one to be had.
Its not, as Ric Locke ably laid out, a question of differing interpretations over history (the USSr’s 20mm plus dead quite deservedly informs much of their worldview, just as the massive losses of the western Front still resonate with UK-French people); its a plain fact.
The German military intelligence organization run by Reinhard Gehlen (the fellow whose networks of several hundred Russian spies and German operatives/analysts became our chief USSR eyes and ears starting the second week of May 1945) concluded that our shipments of material were a decisive factor in the growing lethality and potency of Russian forces in the early winter of 1943. At the same time, US military attaches were being informed of the same thing…By the russians.
Got that? The Russians thought that without radios (that worked), gasoline, medicines and canned meats, sugar, tobacco and milk, they might have had a lot harder time pulling off what they pulled off.
Thats not a debate boomer, and it seems a dubious conspiracy.
maybe that does or does not tie in to my confusion over why Russia still foments some moderate antagonism our way, but have a real fine time at Fort Meade proving me wrong.
But Thor, I TOTALLY beleive you on your sex tours/adventures of Russia. I bet they stack the women two deep along the Inner ring road, heaving slavic tits at the ready, for when you show up. Because guys who talk about the amount of deflowering they do–you get virgins too, natch!–always are really having a lot of consensual sex. Of course, thats after a day of heady international business negotiations, surely resolved favorably for the accounts of Thor Ltd, Road Town, BVI.

You may have a point there, Rusty. Would have eliminated many dilemmas that Obama finds himself steeped in.

What about illegal enemy combatants? Any mention of those?
Comment by thor on 7/8 @ 9:20 pm #
Just so you understand why I’m about to call you a fuckhead: you don’t know anything about me, jackass, nor who I was employed by nor why I lived and worked in Moscow for close to three years. I don’t give a fuck about your thesis paper, nor how accurate you think it to be, though I would agree some of what you’re touting is the topical consensus view.
The wet end of my dick knows more about Russia than you, fuckface. That’s what I honestly think.
Comment by B Moe on 7/8 @ 9:50 pm #
Exactly. Which is why it is so fucking retarded for you to try to argue from a position of authority.
Comment by thor on 7/8 @ 9:57 pm #
If it comes down to actual whores then I’d like to acquire a roomful of the top French variety first and foremost. French bitches are so, so utterly fashionably hot, and their hats! Maybe I’ll learn a bit of the Cuban-class of Chekhov’s fallen angels, who I hear are compare favorably with highly marketable Colombian and Argentinian flesh. I’m into discovery, and, as you know, all the hot chicks dig Jacques Cousteau and Conquistadors with big swords.

How boring the Constitution – I read your mind.
Comment by B Moe on 7/8 @ 10:05 pm #
Probably not.

By the way, mcgruder, it’s to those towns on the outer ring road where the pimps take dicktards like you for your little sex tours, just so you get your ring roads straight next time.
Weenie-fied American Boy Scouts and their guilt-riddled machinations of pure and sexually driven Russian dyevs, it’s enough to make any Russophile barf in their borscht.
To The Finland Station! Bmoe, I’m taking you home, son. To the untamed land! The Motherland!

Is your gay lover the jealous type, is that what you’re trying to say?

“Just so you understand why I’m about to call you a fuckhead: you don’t know anything about me, jackass,…”
Yes we do.
You’re a liar, a coporaphiliac, a braggart, one with nothing to back it up, unlettered in history and economics, a liar, and a sociopath with the personality of a rabid rattlesnake and the soul of an NKVD torturer.
And a liar. A proven liar.
So, yeah, whore, we know lots about you.
Now why don’t you improve the human genetic heritage and go kill yourself?
Comment by N. O'Brain on 7/9 @ 4:29 am #
Oh, and you project a lot.
Freud would have loved to talk to you about that.
Comment by B Moe on 7/9 @ 6:03 am #
Don’t sugar coat it, N O’Brain, tell us what you really think.

The Russians got screwed by the Romans.
The Russians got screwed by the Mongols.
The Russians got screwed by the French (!)
The Russians got screwed by the Germans.
Oh, and I forgot the Chinese the first time through. They’d go in there twice — once as assistants to the Golden Horde, and in their own right just between the French and the Germans.
Now thor tells us how great it is to screw Russians.
Fun, that. The narodniy of my acquaintance wouldn’t find it quite so amusing.
Regards,
Ric
Comment by JHo on 7/9 @ 8:44 am #
But I question your very authenticity, Ric.
Comment by Ric Locke on 7/9 @ 9:31 am #
Which bothers me not at all, JHo.
I’m sort of thor-ish that way.
Regards,
Ric

thor uses the word hick like a closeted homosexual uses the word fag. And for the same reason, since he is obviously a callow, uncultered oaf. Living outside of the US doesn’t change that in any way.

The fools life is one big projection.
Comment by B Moe on 7/9 @ 9:03 pm #
They call them retro-bush deniers now. What I heard.
Comment by Mikey NTH on 7/10 @ 1:52 pm #
I think you missed where the Russians screwed the Russians in that list, Ric.
