From our house to yours, Happy 233rd Birthday, America!
Michelle Malkin highlights the following excerpt from a John Adams letter to his wife, Abigail.
I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more. You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. — I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. — Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not.
Certainly we still celebrate the day with all manner of games, sports and illuminations, but do most Americans still understand it as a Day of Deliverance? Do they truly grasp the concept of Liberty? How is it that this last November saw college and high school students enthusiastic about the election when they are functionally illiterate about American civics and history? If you asked someone under 30 to describe Liberty [big "L"] today, how would they answer? Would they understand what the American Revolution was fought over? What the phrases “American Experiment” and “American exceptionalism” mean? Indeed, if you asked them if America was a democracy or a republic would they know the correct answer?
Or has Liberty just become another old-fashioned concept to be scrapped in favor of a cradle-to-grave Nannystate? “Liberty” to engage in boorish, crass, exploitive personal behavior “free” from even social criticism, but (in exchange) have the State control your employment, your earnings, your property, your relationship with your doctor, even your choice in church and press? What kind of bargain is that?
What is Liberty to you?

“Liberty” to engage in boorish, crass, exploitive personal behavior “free” from even social criticism…
That is the illusion. The reality is that the left/Proggs are replacing the old social criticisms with new ones designed to keep themselves as the favored ones with all the Correct Ideas and Solutions To Lifes Problems.
Live Free or Die.

The problem is that the Left doesn’t believe in social criticisms – they believe anything worth criticizing must be made into law. It isn’t enough that your Green neighbor lectures you about using incandescent bulbs in your sconces instead of florescent … now he will make sure you don’t have a choice by outlawing the incandescent bulbs.
Comment by Darleen on 7/4 @ 9:59 am #
SGT Ted
Oh, and the Left believes if something is legal and you criticize that “legal” behavior in any manner, YOU ARE A HATER!!1!!1 (and worthy of being covered under “hate” statutes)
Comment by JHo on 7/4 @ 10:06 am #
Adams also said, “All the perplexities, confusions, and distresses in America arise, not from defects in the Constitution or confederation, not from want of honor or virtue, as much as from downright ignorance of the nature of coin, credit, and circulation”.
Franklin: …the inability of the colonists to get the power to issue their own money permanently out of the hands of George III and the international bankers was the prime reason for the Revolutionary War.
Which means that liberty lasted only until the Federal Reserve Act. Not 223 years, 137.
Have a happy 4th, folks.

I am trying to figure out if he meant shoes, like horseshoes, or shows, like let’s paint the barn.

“What is Liberty to you?”
If you do not harm anyone else (their persons or their property) to be left alone (by the force of the State) in your work, endeavors, hobbies, faith, home decor, choice of whisky, hunting, fishing, etc.
And if someone tries to take that away, to Hell with them.

God rest Adams and Jefferson, who both died on this day in 1826.
Three cheers for the red, white and blue,
for the red is the blood of our brothers.
The white is the light of the star
that has led us to where we are.
The blue is the hue of the sky
where on high the Almighty falters never.
Our banner for two hundred years!
Oh pioneers! Here’s to the stars and stripes forever!

I live and breathe this Philadelphia freedom
From the day that I was born I’ve waved the flag
Philadelphia freedom took me knee-high to a man
gave me peace of mind my daddy never had
Oh Philadelphia freedom shine on me, I love you
Shine a light through the eyes of the ones left behind
Shine a light shine a light
Shine a light won’t you shine a light
Philadelphia freedom I love you, yes I do
If you choose to you can live your life alone
Some people choose the city
Some others choose the good old family home
I like living easy without family ties
Till the whippoorwill of freedom zapped me
Right between the eyes

Liberty (to me) is being here at COB Speicher near Tikrit in the middle of the mother-of-all dustorms, helping some of the best and brightest our nation have to offer protect themselves against the enemies of liberty.
While I miss my family, friends, and usual activities this 4th of July… I am honored to be shoulder-to-shoulder with these HEROES. My family and friends are at home enjoying the fruits of our country’s military efforts here, and that makes my decision to volunteer to come here worth every second.
“Freedom is NEVER free….”

It occurs to me that an explanation may be in order (although it will probably be lost on those who actually need it). The keen eye will observe that I phrased that in the opposite sense from how it is usually done.
I deliberately did that to clarify the difference between “freedom” and “liberty”. Robert Heinlein famously said that you can’t conquer a free man; you can only kill him. He was right about that. Your opinion of my terpsichorean endeavors is irrelevant because I am a free man. Many people love (their own) freedom. The more difficult position is to permit liberty of others, especially those engaged in what one knows to be damnfoolishness.
We may preach to fools, try to educate them, but we have no moral justification to impose our “superior wisdom” upon them by force. Nor have they to impose theirs on us. When it’s a two-way street, it’s Liberty.
Comment by SBP on 7/4 @ 2:56 pm #
How is it that we’ve gone from men of sterling character like Washington, brilliant minds like Jefferson and Adams, to the posturing metrosexual fraud now occupying the White House?
How did it come to this?
I do not think those men would be pleased with what we’ve allowed to happen.
When Dr. Franklin was at the Constitutional Convention in 1787, a woman on the street asked him what form of government had been decided upon.
“A republic, if you can keep it.”
If.
On this day, let’s think about the men who pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor in Philadelphia in 1776. They weren’t dealing in sound bites or talking points. They were effectively signing their own death warrants, had they lost or been captured by the British.
Let’s also think about the other men and women, past and present, who put their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor on the line to uphold and defend the Constitution of our Republic. They have never failed. Though there have been terrible attacks on our country, and many bloody wars, besides that family squabble in 1861-65 our country has never faced a serious existential threat from without.
Those of us at home are the ones who should be ashamed. I know I am.
God Save the Republic, and God Bless all men and women who are in danger on its behalf.

Actually, Monster.. my fave Heinlein quote is:
“Anyone who clings to the historically untrue — and — thoroughly immoral doctrine that violence never solves anything I would advise to conjure up the ghosts of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Duke of Wellington and let them debate it. The ghost of Hitler would referee. Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor; and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Breeds that forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and their freedoms.”

Thanks for enduring the heat and sand for la Patria, Dewclaw.
For me, the most apt representation of what this country is about took place in the John Adams miniseries, right after they ratified the Declaration of Independence. After the Quaker dude had enumerated what they were up against, and told them — rightly — that the odds of coming out in one piece were zero and none, they all voted yes.
And then they just sat there in profound silence, contemplating the utterly insane yet utterly sublime decision they had just made. No cheering. No amen. No congratulations and handshakes.
Just. Silence.
And God bless ‘em for it.
May we see their like again, and soon.

“We had been told, on leaving our native soil, that we were going to defend the sacred rights conferred on us by so many of our citizens settled overseas, so many years of our presence, so many benefits brought by us to populations in need of our assistance and our civilization.
“We were able to verify that all this was true, and because it was true, we did not hesitate to shed our quota of blood, to sacrifice our youth and our hopes. We regretted nothing, but whereas we over here are inspired by this frame of mind, I am told that in Rome factions and conspiracies are rife, that treachery flourishes, and that many people in their uncertainty and confusion lend a ready ear to the dire temptations of relinquishment and even to vilify our actions.
“I cannot believe that all this is true, and yet recent wars have shown how pernicious such a state of mind could be and to where it could lead.
“Make haste to reassure us, I beg you, and tell us that our fellow citizens understand us, support us, and protect us as we ourselves are protecting the glory of the Empire.
“If it should be otherwise, if we should have to leave our bleached bones on these desert sands in vain, then beware the fury of the Legions.”
— Centurion Marcus Flavinius, Second Cohort, Augusta Legion to his cousin Tertullus in Rome.

Funny you should mention that John Adams series… they just showed the entire thing on AFN for the last couple of days. I watched most of it for the first time. I was inspired, to say the least!
I appreciate the kind words, thoughts, and prayers being sent this way. They are VERY much appreciated. I really don’t think I am worthy of it… as I am just a Desert Storm vet (Navy)over here in a civilian capacity. I’m training the US soldiers on the RAID Force Protection platforms. It’s a system that helps protect our soldiers from the bad guys over here and in Afghanistan.
The difference between me and the soldiers is huge… I can quit and leave theater any time I want, and the Joes don’t have that option. They get paid dick, have to put up with Olberdouche and Maddow being piped in on AFN (I guess to balance the few hours of FoxNews AFN plays), deal with this insane heat (imagine standing in a huge hair-dryer on non-stop high heat for three months), the sandstorms that literally rain dirt for hours on end, bugs, scorpions, camel spiders the size of pie plates, etc etc…
And yet they had a ton of peeps re-enlist today on the 4th. Just because they love their country and their buddies, and want to see this mission completed successfully.
I travel all around Iraq to the foward deployed FOBs, COBs, and JSSs unarmed… because these guys and gals got my back. And I am completely cool with it.
If even one soldier that might have been hurt or killed makes it back to the world in one piece because of the RAID systems I train, then I feel like I have made a difference… and my kids will be able to say that their Daddy wasn’t some mindless cubicle drone, that he made a difference.
The small sacrifice I make over here is nothing compared to theirs.
Again, thank you for the thoughts and prayers. As I said before, I’ll be sure and relay them to the true heroes over here… the Joes.
Have a great 4th everyone!

It is an Orchid Tree (Bauhinia) … looking a little weird right now, all the blossoms are gone and it is covered in long seed pods and just starting to get its green leaves.
It is quite pretty when in bloom or in full leaf but it is MESSY… even messier IMHO than Jacarandas (and that is saying a lot). When those pods dry out you can hear them “pop” and they fling their seeds (about dime-sized) all over. Sounds like someone tossing pebbles at your window. And those seeds will root rapidly and you’re mowing or pulling or trying to kill sprouting trees in you lawn/garden beds for months.

And when the tagline, “Knock it off,” popped up on the screen, I actually talked back to the TV and told it to do something that would be even harder for a TV to do to itself than, like, a living person.
Which, if the TV were actually gay gay instead of just, you know, stupid gay like TV always is, it might have tried anyway.
