The powers that be [Darleen Click]

This is fun.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers Jr. has backed off his plan to investigate wrongdoing by the liberal activist group ACORN, saying “powers that be” put the kibosh on the idea.

Mr. Conyers, Michigan Democrat, earlier bucked his party leaders by calling for hearings on accusations the Association of Community Organization for Reform Now (ACORN) has committed crimes ranging from voter fraud to a mob-style “protection” racket.

“The powers that be decided against it,” Mr. Conyers told The Washington Times.

The chairman declined to elaborate, shrugging off questions about who told him how to run his committee and give the Democrat-allied group a pass.

Yeah, because it is a real mystery who has the juice to make that happen. Uh-huh, yeah, right, whatever.

Related: here is background on this.

A source inside the Environmental Protection Agency confirmed many of the claims made by analyst Alan Carlin, the economist/physicist who yesterday went public with accusations that science was being ignored in evaluating the danger of CO2.

The source, who chooses not to be identified for fear of retaliation, said that Carlin was rebuffed in his attempt to introduce scientific evidence that does not accord with the EPA’s view of global warming, which largely relies on IPCC reports. The source also saw Carlin’s report and said that it was ‘based on 8 points of peer-reviewed, recent and relevant scientific publications’ that cast doubt on the wisdom of regulating CO2 as a pollutant. [...]

Alan Carlin, who had hosted a series of seminars featuring peer-reviewed scientists who disagree with the IPCC reports (but were unattended by members of the workgroup developing the Endangerment Finding) went public (UPDATE: Mr. Carlin, who I interviewed this evening, says that he did not approach the Competitive Enterprise Institute and did not know they were involved until a reporter contacted him on Tuesday). via the Competitive Enterprise Institute after realising that there would be no debate about the science. The lectures by the scientists are available on the EPA website, but were not even mentioned in the Finding. Carlin was advised to get an attorney–and has since been reassigned to mundane work, some of which is normally performed by outside contractors.

Fucking Conyers and Caralolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick both voted for this Cap and Trade scheme, despite the polls which say black support it at around 25%. Who the fuck do they represent? Certainly not their constituents.

they support keeping themselves in power. That’s about it.

  2. Comment by serr8d on 6/27 @ 10:19 am #

We knew the probe would go nowhere. Best it was called off; a half-assed job by Conyers and Dems would serve only to help ACORN cover it’s tracks.

This is just another straw heaped on the elephant’s back.

““The powers that be decided against it,” Mr. Conyers told The Washington Times. “

I’m with whoever said this was just a card he played to get a deal for his wife. He never has any intention of investigating, unless the bluff was called, and then only until a deal was struck. Horsetrading of corruption, now done publicly since there is perceived, by the left, to be no need to hide it anymore. Out of the closet they are coming.

During the Senate recess, we must all write to our Senators regarding cap-n-tax, and among other things cite the repressing of this information by the EPA…

It must be made clear to them that this legislation is based on feelings, not science, and that they will be held accountable for adding this new tax to Americans backs; because it truthfully effects the lower and middle income folks disproportionately…

Make it clear to them that they will be held accountable!

Unfortunately it is going to take a revisit to the economic fun of the Carter Years to get the hope and change we want.

The damage that will be done in the short term will be enormous.

But if this spending manages to keep socialized medicine from coming, there might be a small blessing. You can easily roll back cap and trade when voters realize their electric bills double. You cannot so easily roll back entitlement expansions.

I suspect elections will be eliminated before 2010. I mean, why not?

  11. Comment by serr8d on 6/27 @ 11:09 am #

Why eliminate elections (and inflame a few on the Left) when you have ACORN and Presidential Community Organizing to wrap ‘em up for you, anyway you like?

No, they won’t eliminate elections; they’ll just make sure they win the ones they need.

    Obamanomics.

I remember an interview with Joe Pantoliano about the Sopranos. He said the most violent episode of that show in his opinion was not the murders or beatings, but when Tony and the boys dismantled the Ramsey Outdoor store when the owner got behind on gambling debts. He was a former friend of Tony. When he asked why Tony did that to him, Tony got defensive about the victim being a degenerate gambler (which he was) and then in a moment of clarity Tony admitted–”It is what I do.”

And you thought the Sopranos would only be back in reruns.

One takeaway on the Cap’ntrade vote is that this was a big FU from Pelosi to the Republicans. Peeling off 8 Republicans and then having that eight votes be the margin between victory and defeat for the measure told the Minority leadership that she could get some of theirs and will be able to adjust the votes on her side to make them the ones seen as the cause of her victory. Not only victorious but has allowed 44 Democrats cover for 2010 and there are now 8 republicans that can be targeted by a “conservative” Democrat.

That makes sense, because they are likely appealing to the Western world. Why do the police have “POLICE” on the back of their uniforms? Is there no Farsi word for police? Or is English the predominant language in Iran? This really struck me.

As far as the Iranian uniforms go, they are simply hoping, that much like the 60’s “Batman” TV show, that by writing “Police” on their backs thay will be seen by foreigners, especially American, as the legitimate authorities, versus the “eeeeeevil demostrators”…

And for what it’s worth Cynn, I wasn’t mocking or taunting you with my haiku; just trying to keep up with buttons, and, you know, cast my “glory days” in an artistic light!

    Really, no offense intended…

    Cynn,
What I meant darlin’, was that when I was flying low over the Iraqi desert on TARP missions years ago, it was so we could all speak our mind…

While we disagree on nuances, we all agree on what is really right, for our nation…

And when not, why vilify, over mere political differences..?

Like we been saying, there will be a huge push to revise the circumstances by which the Obamanation was elected. There were never writhing crowds, there were never fake Greek columns, he was never partying with Stevie Wonder in full Hoover-esque tone deaf elegance. Potemkin president.

Dash, Patton had the cure for that kind of denial in Germany, when he marched the burghers out to the camps and gave them an up close and personal look at what they chose to let happen. Wonder what the Won will leave behind so we can do that to the fools like cynn who put this creep in charge?

The last four would boom and zoom the little Yak’s right out of the sky (the Spitfire would turn with it) and all would simply tear up a mere 17,000 inferior Yak-9’s.

Let’s be fair to thor and our russian allies.

They did a fair job of running over the Wehrmacht, and it only cost them 20 million dead.

It seems foolish to suggest that World War 2 1/2 in the winter of ‘45 would have been a cake walk for either party. They had better tanks, we had better planes and artillery, our soldiers were equally veteran. Our generals were about the same mix, really.

    But consider the following:

    1) The Americans had only begun to tap into their manpower. Our casualties for the same four-year period barely scratch the half-million mark, and that’s including accidents and non-combat-related deaths.

    2) Only half the American army was in Europe. The rest were just finishing up on Japan. Up and to the left from Hokkaido and the Soviets can learn the joys of a two-front war. Not that it would have been much fun to cross the Siberian hinterland, but it may well have provided a tonic to Chaing’s dwindling efforts, AND put a serious hurting on the “Infinite Manpower” of the Soviets. And can you say “liberated and armed zeks charging at Moscow like a Nemesis from the Gulags”? Knew you could.

Advantage: USA. Face it thor, for all their ferocity, the Nazis were upjumped cruiserweights. This would have been Foreman/Frazier.

LTC John, it’s just futile to throw words at the machine our Government has become. We have to wait, wait, wait on the pendulum to come to it’s maximal swing, and hope that it does so without self-destructing.

Our next real political pendulum swing-indicators will be in the lead-up to 2010 elections. Or in the collapse of the dollar, the economy, whichever comes first. Of course, that would break the pendulum forever.

Honduras is undergoing a coup d’état by their military today. Pres Obama issued a statement:

Reaction to the apparent coup was swift. U.S. President Barack Obama said he was “deeply concerned” and called on all political actors in Honduras to “respect democratic norms, the rule of law and the tenets of the Inter-American Democratic Charter. Any existing tensions and disputes must be resolved peacefully through dialogue free from any outside interference,” he said.

The apparent source of the trouble seems to be:

Mr. Zelaya, an ally of Venezuela’s populist President Hugo Chávez, has been locked in an increasingly bitter battle with the rest of Honduras’s political establishment, including members of his own party, over the president’s plans to hold a referendum to scrap the constitution and potentially allow re-election, something currently barred under Honduran law.

Honduras’s Supreme Court had declared the referendum illegal, and last week the military said it wouldn’t help the president distribute the ballots. The president responded by firing the top military chief, leading to growing tensions within the army. The Honduran Congress had also considered having Mr. Zelaya declared “unfit” for office. [...] Voicing the fears that sparked the military’s action, retired Honduran Gen. Daniel López Carballo justified the move against the president, telling CNN en Español that Mr. Zelaya was a stooge for Mr. Chávez. He said that if the military hadn’t acted, Mr. Chávez would eventually be running Honduras by proxy.

190 – no pendulum swing if nobody ever hears about this rubbish. I am fairly sure if the depths to which this Congress has sunk were widely known, many House and Senate incumbants would be looking for new jobs in late 2010.
But where are people going to hear about this – on The View? In their AP reprints in the local paper? Local TV News? ABC, CBS, NBC, NPR, PBS, CNN, MSNBC, Radio Pacifica?

Had idiot Patton so much as pissed the Russians off, your Russian daddy would have named you Katyusha. Our only hope would have been our light armor. We might’a been able outrun the Russian T-34’s back to that beach at Normandy and make a swim for home.

The Russians defeated Hitler and then Stalin told Truman to fuck off. We were in no position to challenge the Russian army so we obeyed Stalin. Cry all you want, but that’s what happened. The U.S. military gained certain advantages some twenty years later but that was not the case directly after WW2, a.k.a. The Great War.

Uncle Sam’s dough boys were no match for the fierce Russian army. We were outgunned and outclassed in that theater. Best to be honest.

Fausta has the word on the Honduran change o’ President (h/t Dan Collins). Looks as though the initial report to the effect that a coup was under way may have been incorrect. Per Fausta:

    1:40PM
CNN en español mentioned that Zelaya was arrested by court order. This signals that all the Honduran institutions were behind this move, in which case the president was overthrown, but it would not be a coup d’etat.

    1:50PM

You are incorrect. Little David was was created to test bombs that were to be dropped from aircraft. It was useful for that purpose. As an afterthought, it was considered a possbile heavy siege weapon for the invasion of Japan. It was much smaller, cheaper, and easier to transport than Gustav-type artillery. In the end, it was only used for its original purpose – a testbed. It was a reasonable use of resources.

    thor,
Although you’re correct in that last evening I was a bit inebriated, I stand by my comment on the superiority of our airpower and the effect that would have had the glorious Soviet armor you speak of…

In fact, generally the most feared among the late war Soviet tanks suffered from the same problems that their Geman counterparts did; the fact that their armor was optimized for defense against other tanks and anti-tank guns. But, their weakness was the armor thickness when viewed in planform. As a result they were vulnerable to air attack by tactical aircraft such as the ones I’ve previously listed.

And forgetting about tactical air support for a few momoents; have you ever seen the photos of the result of massed level bomber attacks on German armor formations in Normandy? Of Tigers flipped upside down like so many tinkertoys? How do you think your beloved Soviets would have fared against that..?

    Not too well I believe…

And the IL-2 Sturmovik and it’s derivatives? A damn fine tactical bomber. But, while better than the Stuka, was far inferior to the A-20, A-26, B-26, just about any of the Tactical bombers we manufactured…

And in your fantasy I don’t know what would have been flying cover for your “Flying Chariots of the Glorious Red Army!”…

    Our P-38’s, P-47’s, and P-51’s would have torn them a new you-know-what…

    Face da troooooof!

  374. Comment by Wm T Sherman on 6/28 @ 5:38 pm #

So, to recap: Conyers’ nasty wife has been convicted of taking bribes. Conyers has halted an investigation into ACORN, and the reason he gives is that some higher authority has forced him to do it. Who could comprise this higher authority, these “powers that be,” other than the White House or the heads of his own party? Whether that’s the real reason or not, it is interesting that the only explanation he could come up with was to blame Obama and/or the Democrat leadership. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Maybe he has good reason to believe his lame explanation will suffice — all sorts of other crap is passing by without opposition or question.

I not only loaded rounds with it, we made our own bombs with it. Waterproof fuses off a M-80 and a lot of tape. Hell yeah it worked.”

    ————————————————————————————–

Before the first smokeless propellants were developed, circa 1885-1890, black powder was simply called gunpowder. After the development of smokeless propellants, the ancient formula of KNO3/C/S, in the ratio 75/15/10 or so by weight, was called “black powder” to make a distinction between it and the new propellants. Nobody would call smokeless powder “black,” as this would restore the potentially dangerous confusion that the introduction of the novel term “black powder” was intended to address; smokeless burns at much higher pressures.

Also, the simple fact is that nobody uses the term “black smokeless powder.” Nobody. A lot of smokeless propellant is blackish or dark green in color, but color is useless for classification of these propellants. Commercial product codes are generally used, as there are important and precisely catalogued differences in burn rate, pressure curve, and total energy among different smokeless compositions. Being ignorant of these things would be catastrophic for a reloader.

People who reload have great attention to detail. Their lives may depend upon it. So if you reloaded at all, which I doubt, you learned absolutely nothing from it. What does this tell us about you?

Putting smokeless in a pipe or other container to make a bomb is a rather common thing for adolescents. It is not at all unusual or exotic. Perhaps if you had made guncotton, nitroglycerin, ethylene glycol dinitrate, lead azide, or your own black powder and black powder fuses, you could claim some sort of particular expertise. But all you said is that you put some smokeless in a container. A chimpanzee could do that.

By the way, the quickest and safest way to make a fuse from black powder is to enclose a powder train in aluminum foil, not paper. If you use paper it will tend to flash through in an instant and give you an unpleasant surprise. There is a way of using a dextrin/powder slurry to coat string and make “black match,” but I have not done that. Why didn’t you make your own black powder and your own fuses? All you had to do was read up on it.

So, what do you think of this Conyers business? He didn’t say that ACORN was absolved. He said that he was forced to stop investigating. Who are the “powers that be” that he refers to when explaing dropping his investigation of ACORN?

If you were an inquisitive or curious kid older than 8 or 9 years, you would have remembered more than “it was black and granular.” And, if you were so very young that you remember so little, who were the reckless and negligent adults letting you make bombs out of a powerful explosive? It sounds like they didn’t care if you lived or died.

Also, you said “maybe I was a little kid back then.” Not, “I was a little kid back then.” Curious turn of phrase. The kind of phrasing a prevaricator would use.

For example, the USSR was highly dependent on trains, yet the desperate need to produce weapons meant that only about 92 locomotives were produced in the USSR during the entire war. In this context, the supply of 1,981 US locomotives can be better understood. Likewise, the Soviet air force was enhanced by 18,700 aircraft, which amounted to about 14% of Soviet aircraft production (19% for military aircraft).[6]

Although most Red Army tank units were equipped with Soviet-built tanks, their logistical support was provided by hundreds of thousands of US-made trucks. Indeed by 1945 nearly two-thirds of the truck strength of the Red Army was U.S.-built. Trucks such as the Dodge ¾ ton and Studebaker 2.5 ton, were easily the best trucks available in their class on either side on the Eastern Front.

“We could have really done some damage to Vladivostok! Woo.Woo. Or maybe using their newly acquired German U-boats they could have cut the naval supply lanes to Japan, like we once did, and starved our Japanese bases of petrol. I bet the Japs would have sided with Russia and we weren’t about to drop a bomb on Russia because we weren’t sure they didn’t have one to drop on us.”

    ————————————————————————————–

Soviet troops were in Manchuria and Korea. Their supply line (not lines, line, singular) was the trans-Siberian railroad. A long, easily cut single route. Plus shipments from the United States, which I suspect did not continue after the war.

You seem to forget the massive amount of Western aid that the Soviets received. Not just materiel, but also blueprints for manufactured items, factories and chemical plants.

Given that neither the Germans nor the Soviets had a significant submarine presence in the Pacific, and that the U.S. had an enormous naval presence, and that Japan was in ruins, and that the Soviets attacked Japan at the end of the war, I don’t see how any of this could have happened.

Regarding your accounts of reloading and maintaining five cars – are you saying that you grew up in the United States? What then is your Russian conection?

So, Conyers is a corrupt little man, like many others. Does this matter?

    thor, reloading ? BWAHAHAHHAA!

He is a fiction writer, you know. And not a very good one, either, it seems…

Smokeless powder burns uniformly. As it burns, at rates defined by it’s composition, it’s granular shapes and sizes, it releases gases that, when confined to a cylinder, will expand, creating pressures that propel a projectile down a barrel on it’s way; you know the rest of the story. Black powder explodes rather than burns. Black powder is pretty cool stuff, if it’s used correctly. Smokeless powder is much safer, but still dangerously flammable. It’s not much suitable for any real bombmaking, but don’t go buy a canister of Vihtavuori N-350 (my current favorite) just to find out for yourself. Load some nice .44’s and .45’s with it instead.

The coarseness of black powder (FFFFg, a very fine powder suitable for, say, a flintlock’s ‘touchpan’ to Fg, coarse ‘cannon’ fodder) determines it’s speed of ignition and loading characteristics. I’ve used FFFg in revolvers and FFg in muzzleloaders. If you use too fine a powder in, say, a rifle with a long barrel, you risk overpressure and a burst barrel. FFg in revolvers won’t give adequate pressures in a shorter barrel.

You don’t see so much black powder around anymore, for obvious reasons. There’s a black powder substitute, Pyrodex (complete with smoke!) for modern-day sissies users. But it’s not as ‘unsafe’ as the real thing. Perfect! for our worried society, for those who can’t drink out of a garden hose without a cringe of guilt.

Black powder can either burn or detonate. Detonation is a chemical reaction propagated by a pressure/shock wave, rather than by convection and conduction. Orders of magnitude difference in the burn rate. The detonation velocity of black powder is about 1250 feet per second – not very impressive by modern standards. Modern high explosives have detonation velocities from around 18,000 to 25,000 feet per second. However, in black powder firearms, the distinction between burning and detonation of black powder matters – leave an air space behind a bullet/wad, and you may get a detonation that bursts the barrel. It was discovered in the 18th century that decreasing the powder charge in a shell, i.e. leaving an air space inside by not completley filling with powder, roughly tripled the number of shell fragments – the air space encouraged transition to detonation, and thus a more brisant explosion that tended to have a more shattering effect.

Progressive burning powder was invented before the switch to smokeless powder. Progressive burning, i.e. the rate of burning and thus gas generation increases with time, is a function of geometry of the powder grains. A cylindrical grain with axial holes in it will increase in surface area, and thus burn rate, as the reaction proceeds. One Colonel Thomas Rodman discovered the principle, more or less by accident; he was working with black powder and artillery construction during the Civil War. Google “prismatic powders.”

There are exceptions to control of burn rate purely by geometry – modern ball powder is spherical grains of nitrocellulose with a surface impregnation of inhibitor, so that the burn starts slow, and increases with time. The reason that progressive burning is desirable, is that the volume behind the projectile increases with time; increase in the burn rate makes better use of the pressure limit of the barrel. Simple grains of powder, roughly spherical or spherical/irregular, whether black or smokeless, are regressive burning: burn rate is maximum at ignition, and decreases with time, as the grains burn off get smaller, and have smaller surface areas.

    Hey thor,
I’ve seen a map of the former Soviet Union…And I also am aware that during their push on Berlin, that the Soviets emplyed virtually all of the armies they could assemble to crush the Germans. They left skeleton forces in the east, due to a tacit agreement Stalin had made with the Japanese not to engage their armies in China and Korea; he was smart enough to realize that he couldn’t fight a two front war, because they simply didn’t have the industrial base to support one-logistically…

You’re also willfully ignoring the large number of trucks, planes, locomotives, and supplies that we were giving the Soviets to enable them to keep up the offensive. You are also ignoringthe fact that the Soviets didn’t have atomic weapns, or that technology, or even the means to build them; and wouldn’t have it until the Rosenbergs stole it for them a few years after the war ended…

    But we did…

Our air forces had proven their power in bombing the Germans into submission, virtually destroying their many of their heaviest armored before they could even engage. And we had defeated the U-boats in the Atlantic, just as with the Japanese in the Pacific. So, to fantasize abut captured u-boats somehow neutralizing the pacific fleets? Whatever chronic you’re smoking, I’d love to have some…

The soviets would have been hard pressed to deal with the assets we had in Europe, and while formidable, would have been quickly bombed into the stone-age by strategic air assaults; and the vaunted tank armies you wax on about would have been destroyed by swarms of tactical bombers just as the Germans had been…

And the forces that would have been available after Japan’s surrender, especially the air components, would have moved steadily across the vast expanse of the east…

The Soviets were spent after their offensive on Berlin. And they were right to not try and fininsh driving across Europe. Stalin realized that it was a can of whip-ass that he dared not open. He had seen the effects of the atomic bomb, and realized that until he could acquire that weapon, and the means to deliver it, that he just coudn’t compete. He also knew that his air force could never compete with ours. So, he counted on the wests war weariness, and bluffed well himself…

He knew that to do otherwise would cost him all he had gained…

    Victory!
See, I can declare it too!

Remember, send me some o dat chronic holmes; it seems to give you some grand hallucinations!

    Peace-Out!

What, just because the Russki’s had never set foot in a u-boat you doubt they would have been much superior to the German commanders?

Hater! What makes you think who thor voted for has anything to do with the superiority of the Russian Navy?

When last we heard from you, thor, it was to witness you establishing your cartoons, again, and again, questioning reality when they failed you. It works like this:

    HICK!

    Oh. You’re not a hick.

I question your being a hick!

    YOU’RE NO HICK, HICK!

And so on and so on, ever angrier and ever more foolish. Next: The supremacy of your next fiction over against your next cartoon. Do go on. Trucks and planes; warriors and armadillo shooters.

    Fantasy thor, fantasy?

How would the Soviets get to LA? A swimming version? They had virually no Navy, save for small squadrons at Vladivistok and in the Black sea. A few small flotilla’s originally operating in the Murmansk and Leningrad areas…

And those Kama trucks, as far as I can find they didn’t exist…

    http://www.o5m6.de/

The relocated factories you spoke of were mostly tank and artillery, and the ammunition for both. The trucks those katyushas you spoke of were predominantlyUS SUPPLIED!

The IL-2 was junk compared to the aircraft we built, and was certainly no fighter; the Soviets used US SUPPLIED! P-39’s generally, as well as some Yak, Mig, and Lagg’s. And except for the tight turning Yak, the P-39’s faired the best!

The Soviets were tough thor, that’s a fact. But as I said earlier, the fighting in the Pacific theater was every bit as savage and wrought with privation as the eastern front…

The T-34’s were excellent tanks. But they could be desstroyed by tactical bombers just as easily as Panthers. There is no concievable reality where the Soviets could have even come up to fight with the US Army Air Corps. They had taken on the other great airforce on earth, the Luftwaffe, and while suffering early setbacks destroyed them completely…

Stalin was right to fear that force, and correct to exploit the war weariness of the free societies…
    Because he would have lost!

Hope you did well at poker…

I’m lookin’ forward to recievin’ that chronic from you soon…

How would the Soviets get to LA?

thor’s invasion of LA merely requires an 80’s timeframe, Bob. By which time all appropriately insidious plans were in place except for the one defusing Reagan. Dangit.

But perhaps the greatest obstacle for the ekranoplane has been simple difference. The ekranoplane exists in a mode of operation between a sea and air vessel and has never been embraced by either transportation industry*. Similarly, despite their great lead in this technology**, the Soviet military was never able to realize any of its strategic military potential because neither airforce or navy would take responsibility for its use. Today we should understand enough about the technology of transportation in general to recognize the ekranoplane simply as a ‘fast ship’ class of marine vessel akin to hydroplanes and hovercraft. And yet the ‘image problem’ for the technology persists and only a single vehicle has, to date, come close commercial deployment; the Orlyonok, a turbo-prop driven design originating in the Soviet program as a fast troop carrier which was adopted in the post-Soviet era by the Volga Ship Yards for use as a commercial vehicle. Current status of the Orylonok is not clear but this may prove an off-the-shelf starting point for the Wingship development program.

The Soviets. Beaten because they couldn’t agree how to invade Los Angeles.

    * Heh
    ** Heh, he said industry.
