Republican marriage [Darleen Click]

The kerfuffle over South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford’s slipping the media (and his partisan critics’ leash) doesn’t show any signs of abating as of yet. Skimming of the commentary has been an interesting lesson because if one scrapes away the partisanship the other bit of hysteria centers around Sanford as husband.

Cassandra covers this in her usual pithy style concerning a commenter that attacks Sanford’s wife for being “unconcerned”

[commenter] Really? Not concerned? Your husband just picks up and leaves, without telling you anything, and that’s fine with you? His phones are off, he’s gone for several days, over Father’s Day weekend, and you’re not worried at all?

Control issues, anyone? We’ve heard rumors of wives who don’t remove their husbands’ testicles before they let them out of the house each day, but frankly we don’t believe them.

Ace finds it “weird” that Jenny Sanford told the Associated Press she didn’t know where her husband was but maybe he should consider two things, first the AP didn’t give an exact quote from her and maybe she was lying to the press in order to protect her husband’s privacy. I know there has been many a time that I’ve told some pushy telemarketer “No, my husband is not available right now and I have no idea when he is getting back.” If I were in Mrs. Sanford’s position I would demur from setting the dogs on my husband, too.

Good marriages are not only great partnerships but they also long endure when each person respects the other’s desires for “me” time in addition to the usual “we” time. And neither partner should be the Parent (“Mommy, may I?”) in the relationship.

Little Miss Attila

Go back and re-read Cassie’s entry; she’s been adding to it all day. Are she and I married to the only real men left in the entire freakin’ country? Do we only want Momma’s boys or Daddy’s girls in the White House from here on out? Teddy Roosevelt is doing backflips in his grave right now: apparently no one is allowed to go on a writing retreat, take a road trip, or hike, hunt, or fish if they have any political ambitions at all. Unbelievable.

Yep, looks that way … well, at least for any politician with an “R” after their name.

    Argentina?

When Teddy almost killed himself exploring the Amazon, he took his son with him and he told his wife where he was going.

The hyenas of the media love to cut an up and coming Republican from the herd and evicerate him or her, I get that Darleen. But this handling of the matter by the Governor’s staff has been hamfisted and has made this story have legs now.

  2. Comment by Joe on 6/24 @ 8:30 am #

Darleen, I am all for going on an adventure when it suits you. And I do not think the Governor need brief everyone on his travel itinerary. But when he returned after the thing became a story, you don’t make up fake stories to the media. That is like trying to calm down piranahs with buckets of blood.

How about saying it is none of your business? Then let them spin their wheels. This appears to have been handled in a hamfisted manner.

  3. Comment by SarahW on 6/24 @ 8:45 am #

Oh, the dissembling to nosy inquiry is possible. So there is a possibility he isn’t a total flake, with regards to his respect for his family members.

But assuming the worst, there’s no excuse for taking off and being unavailable in parts unknown to your own spouse. That’s not “manliness” is jerkiness. I wouldn’t stand for it. My husband wouldnt have to ask my permission to take time for himself, but he would have show some respect for my feelings.

  4. Comment by Log Cabin on 6/24 @ 8:46 am #

Gosh, you don’t think Sanford being a potential challenger to the messiah has anything to do with this dustup, do you?

  5. Comment by Joe on 6/24 @ 8:48 am #

It is possible he told his wife where he was going and this is about not wishing to discuss details with the press. I get that. A state governor is not the President, he should be able to get a little alone time if he needs it. But if this was just about taking an adventure, don’t create a quasi scandal by having your staff lie about it to the press. That is just stupid.

  6. Comment by Joe on 6/24 @ 8:49 am #

Log Cabin, of course it does. Which is all the more reason for Sanford’s staff not to BS about it to the press.

  7. Comment by JD on 6/24 @ 8:52 am #

Oh, for the sake of fuck. A hamfisted manner? The media and the Left went apeshit – conspiracy theories, oh whatever will we do hysteria, and all sorts of other shit – just because a guy wanted to go hike the AT, and did not get clearance with the media prior to doing so. Good fucking lord. Hamfisted? Bzzzzzzttttttt. Wrong.

  8. Comment by JD on 6/24 @ 8:53 am #

I am going to go take a shit. I will be incommunicado for several minutes. Should you try to reach me, if will not be answering the phone. Should that make you hysterical, if you call my Better Half, she will not know my exact location, which should send you right over the edge.

  10. Comment by JD on 6/24 @ 8:55 am #

Did he tell his staff to lie about it? Or did they make something up because they did not know?

  11. Comment by Brock on 6/24 @ 8:58 am #

I know there has been many a time that I’ve told some pushy telemarketer “No, my husband is not available right now and I have no idea when he is getting back.”

I prefer the honest approach. Such as “Yes, my wife is home, but you’re an unwelcome telemarketer and will not be speaking with her. Goodbye.”

Frankly, as a husband, I’d be very worried if my wife just disappeared for five days without saying where she’s going. She’s not on a leash by any means, but I love her and am concerned for her safety. I think it would be weird if she really didn’t know. I suspect she just lied because she’s not as confrontational as I am (my answer would have been “He’s off camping. No, I’m not going to tell you where. It’s a private activity and none of your business.”)

  12. Comment by maggie katzen on 6/24 @ 9:01 am #

Hey, has anyone seen JD? he’s not answering his phone.

  13. Comment by pdbuttons on 6/24 @ 9:01 am #

    I would of said
Sarah Palins giving him outdoor lessons

  14. Comment by Matt on 6/24 @ 9:02 am #

I’ve sorta been in the same situation his staff was in – ie covering for a boss who you know is doing something kinda crazy but telling the client what he is actually doing may end badly so you lie. IE its the day before trial and the boss is off playing golf- the client calls wanting to talk to him – now if I tell the client “he’s playing golf” not only will the client likely fire my firm, my boss would then fire me, even though I was telling the truth and I had not been told to lie. Hiking in the US sounds a little better then “well he’s disappeared out of the country”, I guess.

Sanford should know better- I don’t think he did anything wrong but perception is everything and for a presidential hopeful, its the only thing. Public servants are held to a higher standard and the gov. of a state probably shouldn’t be in the habit of picking up and going out a weeklong excursion without taking precautions (like planning ahead).

  15. Comment by JD on 6/24 @ 9:02 am #

    AWOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Call the media.

  16. Comment by Obstreperous Infidel on 6/24 @ 9:03 am #

Joe, you do seem to be jumping to conclusions and the press is leading you to them.

This guy just went up a few notches in my estimation. Any time you can fuck with the media, go for it. And of course his wife knew where he was. Or not. If that’s there thing, it’s their thing. Go get em’ Gov Sandford.

  17. Comment by Joe on 6/24 @ 9:03 am #

JD, having an R after your name does not mean you have your staff say you are hiking in Georgia and then go, oopps, he really was in Argentina. This story was nothing and Sanfords idiot staff made it into something. Hamfisted? Yeah. That is exactly what it was.

We can rail how the press and Sanfords enemies are mendacious, but it does not help things when Sanford does self inflicted injury by not getting in front of this BS story from the get.

  18. Comment by pdbuttons on 6/24 @ 9:04 am #

    ” outdoor lessons”
    much better!

  19. Comment by JD on 6/24 @ 9:05 am #

Oh for the sake of fuck. Hiking the AT for 5 days is not doing something crazy, Matt. It is essentially walking along a dirt path, a not too uncommon activity.

My Better Half would have said the exact same thing in the same situation.

  20. Comment by Joe on 6/24 @ 9:06 am #

What Sanford should have said: Fuck you, it is none of your business. That would have raised him a few notches for fucking with the media.

Frankly, I was with you yesterday when it came out he was hiking. But when the story changed to him being in Argentina? That just feeds the press frenzy. It is stupid.

  21. Comment by JD on 6/24 @ 9:06 am #

Fuck that, Joe. Take it up with his staff. How was he supposed to get in front of the fucking story while on the AT?

  22. Comment by Joe on 6/24 @ 9:08 am #

Hiking the AT is great. I have done it myself. Going to Argentina is great too (I have not done it yet, but I want to do so).

But when you are a Governor, with an R after your name making you a target, and you tell the press you were hiking the AT and then switch to, oh I was really in Argentina, alone, and suggest his wife did not know where he was (which may or may not be true), that is not the way to handle the media.

  23. Comment by JD on 6/24 @ 9:09 am #

This whole thing is really just a bunch of media people acting hysterical. It is silly beyond all belief. If I was Sanford, I would hold a press conference every time I left the room, every time I had to go to the bathroom, and anytime I needed to change locations.

  24. Comment by JD on 6/24 @ 9:09 am #

I see Joe has bought in to the media narrative.

  25. Comment by Joe on 6/24 @ 9:10 am #

The media can all go fuck themselves. This is not about the media anymore, I do not care about their narrative, this was a non story that Sanfords enemies were just churning. It was nothing and a competent staff could have slapped it away like a fly. Yet Sanford’s staff managed to make it into a frenzy by not knowing where he was, then claiming he was hiking the Applicachian Trail, then saying opps, he was really down Argentina way…alone.

I like Sanford. But this is a self inflicted injury.

All this moaning about worrying about “perception” and “giving the story legs” sounds an awful lot like the pussified hand wringing about Rush’s “I hope he fails” comment.

Fuck the MSM – it’s well past the time to stop acting like victims of abuse who blame themselves and make excuses for their abusers.

  33. Comment by sdferr on 6/24 @ 9:17 am #

The President of the United States is a moron who lies openly (“I have been consistent”) about his policy in a press conference with regard to an ongoing potential world historical revolution for freedom at the heart of Khomeini’s Islamic tyranny and isn’t immediately called on it and hammered to the ground. The President of the United States has Jimmy Carter out playing footsie with the declared terror organization Hamas on his behalf, promising god only knows what to them in the name your government, but the Governor of South Carolina goes to Argentina instead of hiking in his neighboring state of Georgia and this is important?

  34. Comment by Joe on 6/24 @ 9:17 am #

The media are mendacious fuckwads. I expect candidates like Palin, Jindal and Sanford not to let them get the best of them. You can wring your hands and play victim all you want and cry like little girls how unfair it is, but that just makes you a victim.

  35. Comment by Joe on 6/24 @ 9:19 am #

And my advice to Sanford is get in front of this story, tell the press to kiss his ass and fuck off, and be done with this nonsense. But don’t make up BS stories and get caught doing it. That is what was stupid, not going to Argentina.

  36. Comment by JD on 6/24 @ 9:21 am #

His staff told the press yesterday he was hiking the AT in Georgia. Then today it is disclosed he was really in Argentina. That is the BS story.

I am not buying into any media crap. I could care less if Sanford takes a vacation. I think this a non story that Sanfords staff managed to let the press make into a story.

That is what is stupid about it.

So, Joe, you are suggesting that said Rethuglicans need to kowtow to media sensibilities in order to insure fairness and decency?

    Yea, that’ll happen.

Here’s a thought: If the Governor of South Carolina, irregardless of his party affiliation, decides to travel to an Aleutian Island to hobnob with the Inuits without telling his staff and his staff elects to suggest that he’s actually building log homes in the Adirondack … so what? The media will be “fuckwads” as you put it regardless of full transparency or some small misdirection. It’s entirely within their nature. By suggesting that those ‘Thugs need to frame their actions, in every circumstance, to avoid roiling the media waters strikes me as no different from watching our “language” in a vain attempt to curry something less than a total press beat down.

Who does it harm? You? Me? JD’s “giant movement?”

Really, not only do I not care a whit I’m somewhat annoyed that, again, one of my ideological brethren needs to remind me about how “careful” we all need to act and speak in the Age of Hopenchange.

Um, Joe? Fuck that! (not you, ‘that’.)

Let the press have their hysteria and move on. It just ain’t worth the angst.

  47. Comment by Scribe of Slog on 6/24 @ 9:31 am #

Joe – Are you slow? I asked what Sanford lied about, not what his staff did.

  49. Comment by sdferr on 6/24 @ 9:32 am #

JD, evidently it is extremely important that you and I know every detail about the recent whereabouts of the Gov of South Carolina. That either of us should have missed those details only demonstrates how uncaring and poorly informed on the most important issues of the day we can be. May I suggest an auto-da-fe for us that we might get right with the godly narrative of the day? A public flogging in front of the Washington Post offices might suffice I’d guess.

  50. Comment by Danger on 6/24 @ 9:33 am #

I saw JD’s comment but you did not have to elevate it and besides that when do two wrongs make a right?

  53. Comment by BJTexs on 6/24 @ 9:37 am #

Joe: Try to see it in terms of the fundamental difference between manufactured perception and real harm.

Seriously, what’s the harm here? The press got to chew a raw bone for a couple of days? The press finds ways to chew the bones of Republicans just by twisting their words into Gumby figurines. This is no big deal and will fall so far down the memory holes as to end up in a parallel universe.

Regardless of where the Governor was, he obviously wanted to do “whatever” discreetly…

What’s most amusing is folks in the media and the blogosphere whipping themselves up into a frenzy over this. “Why, the nerve of Sanford to go somewhere without telling all of us!”…

Have we gotten so used to politicians like O!, and blowhards like Al Gore, traveling around with their own media entourage that to not wish to do so is considered less than sane?

If Sanford had the confidence in the abilities of his staff and Lieutenant Governor to do take a few days off, under the radar so to speak, then that’s his prerogative.

Whether he was on the appalachian trail or in Argentina; who cares? It’s none of our buisness what anyone else does unless they make it so. And if he was in Argentina?; who cares? What is the implication if he was, that he’s another eeeeevolll RethugliKKKan making deals or getting pointers from old Nazis, or Peronistas…

Any South Carolinian who doesn’t like it can choose to vote for his opponent in the next gubernatorial election…

And as for his Wife? I applaud the lady. She reminds me of my own wife in that she understood her husbands wishes, honored his desire for discretion, and restrained herself from getting more involved in the media circus surrounding this episode. She most likely knew where he was anyway…

I guess that we’ve become so used to seeing disfunctional marriages, and ones of convenience, in the public eye for so long that we are all shocked, Shocked!, when as a society we come across one that seems to actually honor the vows they took before God and their families…

This is a great story and has been well-handled by the media. Very, very few things make me wish I was still in MSM, and I cannot recall ever having been interested in being a political reporter–they are broadly considered the most unlucky SOB’s in every newsroom and are, too sadly, the least inquisitive of the reporter species–but this story is the exception.

Sanford and his wife, who is assuredly lying, screwed up big time. The governor of a state is an exceptionally important position and just “peacing out” is absurd.

meta take away–Sanford aint running for diddly in ‘12. I was sort of a fan, but no longer. We need a grown up on Pennsylvania avenue. Its been awhile.

This is all about intent. My intent is not to criticize Mark Sanford for taking a few days off. Nor is it my intent to carry water for the press and media. They are mendacious and their intent is to attack any up and coming governor or republican challenger to their demigod Obama.

But Sanford is a public figure and politician. Frankly yesterday listening to Ingraham speak about this whole non-story, I thought about the same as most of you. What a complete load of chickenshit (or as I like to call it JD). Joel Sawyer, the governor’s spokesman, told the press yesterday that the Governor hiking the Appalachian Trail. South Carolina will still be there with or without its governor, hell the state might be better off if more of its politicians took more time off.

But then it turns out Sanford was in Argentina.

So rather than some non story about a friggin vacation, the story is now about why did the Governor’s staff not know where he was, then say he was hiking in Georgia, then switch to him being in Argentina? It is incompetence on the Governor’s staff part in making a media storm out of nothing.

So JD, do not tell me what my intent was. The proper response from Joel Sawyer should have been, the Governor is on vacation and beyond that it is none of your business. Or Fuck Off. I would have been good with either.

And BJTexas, you shove that ice cream of yours up your ass.

    SDFerr,
we know Obama lied through his teeth on his past associations with leftists. We also lost that fight, sadly.
This has nothing to do with that.
The governor of a state isnt allowed to just, well, “peace out.” Just walk away because its all a little much. Sorry, that’s just not in the cards, right or left, if you are a governor. His staff screwed up and his wife lied. Im not even certain how to handle Sanford’s state of mind.

You CAN make an argument that it is being overplayed and that Iran is way more important; Id agree. But any news org. has to move what sells, and what gets eyeballs is a governor with larger aspirations just evaporating into thin air whose staff likely lied for him.

  102. Comment by Bob Reed on 6/24 @ 10:48 am #

    mcgruder,

With all due respect, and like I noted in #65, as long as Gov Sanford had confidence in the abilities of his staff and Lieutenant Governor, what does it matter that he took off on a private vacation? If South Carolinians disapprove thay can register that sentiment at the ballot box…

Once again, have we become so used to the rock-star persona of politicians, traveling with huge press entourages and publicized itineraries, that for one to do something discreetly becomes either proof of insanity, poor judgement, or nefarious activity?

And, while I’m sure your this episode stimulates your mewsman’s instinct, I really don’t think it will damage his chances should he choose to try for the RethugliKKKan nomination in 2012. And as far as this leading to the opening act of the “Palinization” of Sanford? Being a veteran, I think he would do much better with Gobson, Couric, et al than Governer Palin did; being that she was fresh out of the gate…

    Best Wishes

No doubt the newsmedia loves to catch out politicians in lies when they commit them, the better to inform the public of the character of their political leaders. That’s precisely why when Pres. Obama said yesterday that his Iran policy has not changed and that he is being entirely consistent from the beginning to this very moment, the reporters in the room pressed him and pressed him, never letting up, insisting that they get a straight answer to an obvious falsehood told straight to their faces, even at the possible cost of publicly embarrassing the most powerful man in the world! Oh, wait.

Salt Lick. I did not do this post. I did not create the story. But it is a story now, even though at its heart it is a nonstory (unless Sanford was doing more than tangoing down Argentina way). The mendacious media did that, helped in large part by an incompetent press secretary who did not have the common sense to tell those jackals to go fuck themselves.

  116. Comment by mcgruder on 6/24 @ 11:02 am #

Having worked with CNN in the past, i think their decision probably presages what is going to be a media walkdown of the revolt. Eventually, the crackdown will win, if I may be so bold. The Iranian government has more guns and more of an appetite for blood than the protesters do. It is ugly, but true.

they are going to win, and win going away. The free peoples of the world, or their elected governments, are not going to lift a finger in any material sense (although the CIA is likely working hard to foment the rebellion with local “hires”); no guns, no money, no lofty rhetoric.

they didnt in 1956, 1968, nor in 1989. Diplomats, and the staffs of full-timers who control them, despise uncertainty and change. they loved the corrupt thug Sadat, they quiver with glee when Mubarrak looks our way. He mostly does what we want, and trust me, I know for a fact he has been a big old hand in GWOT. There’s just not a whole lot of Frontline type exposes looking into how the Egyptian state police handle AQ, or potential AQ members. Hell, they’re only doing what we ask, when we ask it.

At CIA and State, this Iranian shit is a big karma bummer.

So its really nice Instapundit has a green top stripe. The dissidents are going to lose, people are no longer watching hours uninterrupted of Iranian protests and all that blood….and in the middle of the work day.

Thus the Sanford story plays well. Sometimes the news Gods do shine on you, even in Columbus circle in a rainy June, when September cutbacks are looming.

OI, the governor of a state has a pretty clear command and control function on a lot of levels, both politically/legislatively and from a public safety and order perspective.

It is unusually poor judgement to just leave, with a fairly uncertain story as your cover.

This is actively discouraged in the private sector and is likely a firing or disciplinary offense. In the public sector, as an elected official, one has more room to come and go. Still, it indicates poor judgement to leave the state C/C function in an uncertain state. Moreover, from a leadership perspective, real leaders simply dont up and leave in a scattershot fashion.

lets be clear: You wouldnt have a problem if say Corzine of NJ or Granholm of Michigan just walked away? I’d be happy to see them neutralized from more bad decision making, Ill grant you that, but Id definitely criticize them.

When you went for your most recent job, there was no public discussion of your finances, personal decisions such as how many times you were married, any “lapses in judgement” from the student years nor parsing of your public statements.
Governors and candidates for governor do regularly undergo what i described, and more.

I’m from SC as well. Our Gov Sanford is one of the most libertarian Republicans you’ll find. He’s in his 2nd (last) term as governor
and we’d all be really surprised if he does run for President. Even if Ms Jenny (wife) lets him run – she wasn’t too keen on leaving the coast
and living in Columbia as the state’s First Lady. I sincerely doubt she’d be willing to move to DC and put up with the idiots there.

The SC Govs office is not a ’strong’ office and we have the most Good Ole Boy legislature around. Most of the blame for the current situation
in this state can be seated squarely in the legislature’s lap.

Keep in mind too that this is not the first time Sanford’s gone walkabout, so to speak. But it IS amazing how this time it’s such a big deal….

No I agree and I wasn’t saying it was. Jetting off to another country without either telling your staff where you are going or giving them a viable cover story is what I considered a little more unusual. Hiking in the AT’s was actually a more viable story, given the circumstances- less access to cells, computers, etc.

Anyway, I do agree the media is getting hysterical about this and I think it is silly – but unfortunately, when the opposition controls the press, anything, no matter how small, can be blown up and out of proportion. If Sanford wants to be president, if I was his advisor, I’d advise taking any more spur of the moment junkets out of the country.

    Wwll Sammy,

How about Obama taking about how we need to stop running up these horrible deficits; unless of course, it’s to pay for one of his redistrbutionist schemes?

Or, How lobbyists would not be allowed in his administration; unless of course of he felt like hiring them?

Or, how Obama would bring a new era of Transparency!, Ethics!, and Integrity! to DC; and not only has he broken the “every bill will be posted in advance of sighning” pledge, the “no signing statements!” pledge, but he has also mysteriously fired an 2 IG’s-one in direct violation to an act he signed prohibiting the manner in which he did so…

Or, The Brilliance!, and Judgement! that we heard so much about?; why are they cancelling missle defense, proven to work much better than the naysayers will ever admit, when that is precisely the threat that we face emerging in Iran and N Korea?

And, we just won’t talk about the “evolution” of Obama’s stance over the recent events in Iran…

It’s just another waypoint along the continuum of Obama’s ever evolving positions in everything!

Our “betters” would like to call it pragmatism; me, I think it’s just old lack of principle and courage of your convictions…

So Sammy, what about Obama’s secularly sanctimonious proclamations and that many were “just words!”?

Joe, I got that the first five hundred and fifty five times you posted it. My point was that you were elevating that into a faux paux of Clintonian proportions, evidenced by the five hundred and fifty five times you posted.

But appears the press smelled real fear, pressed the story, and Sanford’s press secretary made a half assed attempt to save his boss’ career.

Or the press were just making a big deal of a little story and got lucky. Unless, of course, you could divine the odor of fear through your monitor.

Sammy, your comment at 223 is telling. Because this story was about catching the Governor in a scandal. It was never really about him keeping in contact with his office. The Press was hoping something would come of their suspicions, and apparently they got lucky. Political reporting has merged with TMZ. And this is what the media does.

Now that the husband of the Secretary of State, a former President, is handing with strippers in Argentina… that is a story too. TMZ quality. Granted we know Billy C. is a horndog. But that does not mean the story is not newsworthy.

What they do not want to talk about tells us all we need to know about them. Let the Iranians die, so long as Teh One can lie to their faces and say he has not changed his position. Hell, invite them over for a BBQ, on the freakin 4th. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

  253. Comment by Sammy on 6/24 @ 2:54 pm #

Because this story was about catching the Governor in a scandal. It was never really about him keeping in contact with his office.

We, for me personally, the story is entirely about being out of contact with his office. The fact that we has out of the country exacerbates that issue. The fact that he was hanging out with some Argentinian hottie is (to me) utterly irrelevant. Granted, that’s the focus of the media, but that’s not why this story actually matters.

    Comment by alppuccino on 6/24 @ 1:47 pm #

Wow. Sammy watches Obama watch himself watching the slaughter of young Iranians, and laps it up like ball sweat, not saying a word. But then Sanford pops a hottie and Sammy is absolutely animated.

So exactly how would you stop Iran? Or would you just draw as much attention as possible to the fact that (barring 400,000 boots on the ground within Iran proper (a.k.a declaring War on Iran, something the people we’re supporting would vociferously oppose)) we can’t actually do jack about it?

If they had spent 1/100th of this coverage on Edwards when he was actually running for President

I think Edwards dropped out about 1ms after admitting the affair, so he quickly became irrelevant. He probably could have generated more buzz if he had completely vanished for 5 days, leaving the campaign running around saying “Where is he? No one knows! No one knows!”

There is one slight difference between Bill and Mark.

You mean besides Bill was exploiting an intern young enough to be his daughter?

I said “is” not “was”. You can Bill’s current trip to Argentina covered with the same detail as a sitting Gov. The other story was covered in all the gory detail one could possibly imagine.

But it’s fine for reactionary leftists to “poke the pool boy” ala Bawney Fwank, right, toady?

You have some problem with an openly gay Senator? You see that as equal to a Governor flat out disappearing (and leaving the country) for 5 days, with no contact possible between him and his office?

  256. Comment by Bob Reed on 6/24 @ 3:12 pm #

    Sammy,

    What Sanford did is indefensible…

Just like Barney Frank’s partner running a gay escort/prostitution service out of his/their Capitol Hill townhouse…
I was living in DC at the time; it got a bit of play in the local media, but virtually none nationally. And, there were no ethics repercussions either…

I’ll bet money that Sanford will step down quickly; probably within a week-unlike Blago…Otherwise, the legislature in SC will impeach him for dereliction of duty…

‘Cuz you see, for all the whinneying about The Hypocrisy!, conservatives don’t typically circle the wagons to protect their own; unlike the left, which plies every excuse imaginable or fantastic in their efforts to protect their own-regardless of circumstances.

I do respect the fact that you’re not hitting him on the adultery thing, although you did play the hypocrisy card earlier, and instead are being critical of his dereliction of duty.

That said, I wish you would acknowledge Obama’s hypocrisy on many of his campaign pontifications, and especially, as of late, on fiscal issues…

  257. Comment by sdferr on 6/24 @ 3:14 pm #

A wise president would not have invited Iranian diplomats to US embassy July 4 celebrations in the first place and therefore wouldn’t have to embarrass himself by rescinding the invitation. He would have been able to differentiate a committed tyrannical enemy from a potential negotiating partner. He would rhetorically support seekers of freedom against the tyrants who murder them from the moment those freedom seekers showed their will. He would do everything in his power to de-legitimize the tyrant and nothing to prop the tyrant up. Certainly he would not want to show himself to be an enemy of freedom in the eyes of the men and women who put their lives on the line to gain freedom from the tyrant.

Like apartheid was stopped in South Africa. Keep it in the public light. Let the regime know that they are being scrutinized. If you know the name of a jailed dissedent, Call and write the Iranian embassy or consulate and ask after their health. It just may keep them alive. “we can’t actually do jack about it?” Which means we do nothing at all?

The Democratic Party has never tried to position itself as the party for American Family Values and it certainly has made itself the guardian of the institution of marriage. Let me explain this word hypocrisy to you. Being a hypocrite is to espouse one principle and live by another, the fact Republicans are outraged about this is exactly the opposite of hypocritical. They ask people to honor their oaths, and if they don’t they hold them accountable.

Making transparency and honesty, and running against a “culture of corruption” a primary plank in your parties platform, then looking the other way and even actively covering up corrupt and crooked politicians, that right there is hypocrisy.

Stephen Gobie never did write his tell-all book, Capitol Offenses, but he still has a juicy story to tell. A male gigolo, in 1985 he placed an solicitous ad in Washington, D.C.’s weekly gay paper, the Washington Blade: “Exceptionally good-looking, personable, muscular athlete is available. Hot bottom plus large endowment equals a good time.” That was all that U.S. Representative Barney Frank needed to hear. A powerful Democratic representative from Massachusetts and one of the few openly gay politicians at the time, Frank met with the hunky Gobie on April Fools’ Day, 1985…

…Over the next few months, he ran a prostitution ring from the congressman’s home. In 1987, the Washington Post broke the story. An attempt to expel Frank from the House of Representatives failed on a vote of 390-38, but he was censured with a vote of 408-18. Happily, Frank’s political career has survived and he still serves in the House of Representatives.

It’s slightly more possible than powering the country with unicorn farts, which is what the whole “Green Economy” idea is all about.

Ted, in my accounting classes, banging a top officer of a public company you are supposed to be exercising auditing oversight of for years before confessing just ahead of the papers was called “breach of fiduciary duty” and resulted in you getting fired, losing your CPA license, and then having the defrauded shareholders and the SEC and the US Attorney take turns using you as their round-bottomed doll. For years. Of course, Barney (and thor) wouldn’t have regarded that as a punishment…..

You would think that a certified financial genius like thor would know that.

“Excuse me, but it was Barney Frank who announced his relationship with the gentleman at FNMA to the media so as to avoid any conflict of interest.”

The relationship doesn’t have to be clandestine to be a conflict of interest. It is a conflict of interest no matter who knows it.

I’m sorry but the first step in resolving your fantasy addiction is to admit you have a problem.

The national media didn’t cover that story? That’s pure projected fantasy. Please slap yourself.

This comes straight from memory recall, didn’t Barney Frank begin dating the ex-FNMA officer who only later become appointed to some sort of FNMA board? Hence Barney and partner’s need to be official in declaration of relationship, sort’a like knowing Wendy Gramm is Phil Gramm’s husband!

Like I said, you’re no Barney Frank. He is an ethical man.

They cover everything. Some get 24/7 for weeks and on the front page of every paper and news magazine. Others get mentioned once on page 32, bottom left. Both would be considered “covered”.

Well, if Sanford’s wife did throw him out a few weeks ago, and I haven’t clicked that link someone provided to confirm that, then she was not lying when she said she did not know where he was and she was not concerned.

I feel for her sons. But for their sake, at least the Gov did not run off with Barney Frank. (Eeewwwww!)

Earth to noisy moron, Cuba has higher favorability ratings than the Republican party

    Uh-huh. ‘Cording to whom?

Cause according to Rasmussen, the generic congressional ballot is within the margin of error for a dead heat, and two weeks ago was a dead heat: http://tinyurl.com/genball

And Obama’s approval ratings have been bleeding away for some time: http://tinyurl.com/preztrack

And the blameshifting for the economy away from Bush and towards Golden Boy has already begun: http://tinyurl.com/RR0293

But don’t let me interrupt your Little Red Fevre Dream. Nothing like the passion of a useful idiot.

Now that I’ve read through this blog, I have to go take a hot shower and scrub all the grime off me. Then, I have to delete the link to this schoolyard, where fat little toads sit bravely in front of the computer monitor and throw their excrement at anybody who posts a word using more than three syllables. This guy “JD” should go live in Afghanistan or Pakistan for a year or so and learn some manners. And whoever is moderating this site should go back to primary school and learn how to read so that they can identify pointless, obscene comments and delete them before they infect the whole blog. Come to think of it, forget it. It’s too late for this blog. Too many monkeys throwing shit at each other.
