NYT reporter escapes Taliban, is rescued by Pakistani army…(The Sanity Inspector)

David Rohde, a New York Times reporter who was kidnapped by the Taliban, escaped Friday night and made his way to freedom after more than seven months of captivity in the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

His Afghan colleague made it out, too. Congratulations to both, and I look forward to reading the no doubt cracking good story behind these events.

Can’t help thinking though, when I get to this bit:

Until now, the kidnapping has been kept quiet by The Times and other media organizations out of concern for the men’s safety.

Wish they’d take that consideration more often, even if it would put them on the same side as American presidents with an R after their names.

The bottom line is this: No classified secret necessary to fight terrorism is safe once the Times hears of it, at least as long as the Bush administration is in power. The Times justifies its national security breaches by the mere hypothetical possibility of abuse–without providing any evidence that this financial tracking program, or any other classified antiterror initiative that it has revealed, actually has been abused.

Good thing no one declared these men’s kidnappings a national security issue.

Ed Morrisey at HotAir had the info months ago and called the Times and they asked him and others not to release the info. He has a story up about it.

Let’s all hope that the NYTimes learns something about operational discretion from this episode…

Cap’n Ed showed his gentlemanly class and discretion by keeping mum ’til the writer was safely home…

And, let’s hope they passively gathered some good intel…

I’m looking forward to reading the accounts…

    A bit OT, apologies TSI.

Back from a trip to HotAir with a letter from Mousavi’s office addressed to Pres. Obama. Allahpundit tipped me to at Michael Ledeen’s joint, which, go visit, as there are disclaimers about the letter and an update quoting Mousavi’s speech today. Here is the letter in full (and ouch):

From the Office of Mr. Mir Hossein Mousavi

To the President of the USA, Mr. Barack Hussein Obama:

    Dear Mr. President,

In the name of the Iranian people, we want you to know that when you recently made the statement “Achmadinejad or Mousavi? Two of a kind,” we consider this as a grave and deep insult, not just to Mr. Mousavi but especially against the judgment of the Iranian people, against our moral conviction and intelligence, especially those of the young generation that comprises a population of 31 million.

It is a specially grave insult for those who are now fighting for democracy and freedom, and an unwarranted gift and even praise for Mr. Khamenei, whose security forces are now killing peaceful Iranians in the streets of every major city in the country.

Your statement misled the people of the world. It was no doubt inspired by your hope for dialogue with this regime, but you cannot possibly believe in promises from a regime that lies to its own people and then kills them when they demand the promises be kept.

By such statements, your administration and you discourage the Iranian people, who believe and trust in the values of democracy and freedom. We are pleased to see that you have condemned the regime’s murderous violence, and we look forward to stronger support for the rightful struggle of the Iranian people against the actions of a regime that is your enemy as well as ours.

Still giving him what he wants, you two are…

The NYT won’t “learn” anything from tis – they will easily distinguish, in their own minds, between what Ed did and their ‘brave’ dissent from BOOOSH! I suspect they credit themselves with saving the Republic with every revelation, and justify ever time they hold their tongues (tpying fingers?) with the current administration in place. But we won’t ever hear what that justification is – unless it is seen in some weak editorial page offering. They are what they are – it isn’t unknown anymore. Look at their sales – the true believers and some offices, librarires and such buy it. Nobody else.

    Ronald Reagan:

“We welcome change and openness; for we believe that freedom and security go together, that the advance of human liberty can only strengthen the cause of world peace. There is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace. General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Why is it so smart for Obama to be slient on Iran, when it was so bad for Bill Clinton to be silent on Rwanda and Pope Pius XII to be silent on the Holocaust…

#27 B Moe: The Secretary of State isn’t responsible for hurricane relief in Louisiana. What could she do? Assemble and deploy the First Diplomatic Light Infantry?

    That is the difference.

And with respect to other commenters, during the Cold War we were prepared to go to war with all of the Warsaw Pact countries – despite our feelings towards their captive populations. And yes, that did include nuclear “glass parking lot” strikes.

  36. Comment by B Moe on 6/21 @ 12:07 pm #

And Obama isn’t responsible for the people of Iran. I agree he should be more aggressive in his statements, but ragging on him for taking his kids out for ice cream is ridiculous.

B Moe, indeed – leave the President out of it – the reportage of such harmless frivolity (and not what is happening around the world) maybe not so much.

This is a huge development if it proves true:

1:54 pm: Al Arabiya follows up on the story we translated yesterday, examining what Rafsanjani is doing amid all the turmoil. (h/t Nico):
Iran’s religious clerks in Qom and members of the Assembly of Experts, headed by former President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, are mulling the formation of an alternative collective leadership to replace that of the supreme leader, sources in Qom told Al Arabiya on condition of anonymity. … [Ed: Note the glaring mistake. Rafsanjani is the head of the Assembly]

Members of the assembly are reportedly considering forming a collective ruling body and scrapping the model of Ayatollah Khomeini as a way out of the civil crisis that has engulfed Tehran in a series of protests,

The discussions have taken place in a series of secret meetings convened in the holy city of Qom and included Jawad al-Shahristani, the supreme representative of Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, who is the foremost Shiite leader in Iraq.

Sheesh, Barbara Slavin no less. h/t M. Goldfarb who says:

Clemons concurs without hesitation. It’s ironic then that Obama became the first American president to say otherwise just three months ago when he taped a new year’s message to “the people and leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran.” He referred to the country twice as an “Islamic Republic.” It was jarring for many to hear a U.S. president refer to the Iranian regime by its formal name. Kristol wrote in the pages of this magazine that in doing so President Obama was “kowtowing to a regime that is anything but republican, implicitly forswearing any plan–any hope–of regime change to free the Iranian people.”

Indeed, this administration had no plan or hope of regime change, but suddenly it is faced with the very real possibility that the regime will fall. And yet President Obama is still stubbornly clinging to a policy of engagement and normalization even as State Department officials privately concede that the “chances for meaningful engagement with Khamenei regime have been set back considerably.” So will Obama continue to refer to Iran as an Islamic Republic? Will he continue to persist in a policy of engagement no matter the crimes committed by those who would sit on the other side of the table? Or will Obama seize the chance to be on the right side of history?

  41. Comment by fnord on 6/21 @ 6:14 pm #

Keeping mum in this case is unsurprising. It is obvious that a New York Times reporter is a fully human being. The rest of us rubes, not so much.

Probably depends on what day it is and who he is talking to, like everything else.
