With the Democratic no-go on Guantánamo (I’ll leave it to the better informed to ascertain the degree that the Democratic Congress came to the rescue of an embarrassed Obama administration and cut off funding for the shutdown to allow him an out with the now familiar excuse of “they did it — not me, who keeps promises”), I think we now have come to the end to the five-year left-wing attack theme of Bush “shredding the Constitution.”
Except for the introduction of euphemisms and a few new ballyhooed but largely meaningless protocols, there is no longer a Bush-did-it argument. The Patriot Act, wiretaps, e-mail intercepts, military tribunals, Predator drone attacks, Iraq, Afghanistan — and now Guantánamo — are officially no longer part of the demonic Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld nexus, but apparently collective legitimate anti-terrorism measures designed to thwart killers, and by agreement, after years of observance, of great utility in keeping us safe the last eight years. [...]
In short, all the fury, the vicious slander, the self-righteous outbursts, the impassioned speeches from the floor, the “I accuse” op-eds by the usual moralistic pundits — all that turned out to be solely about politics, nothing more.
Quite so. The down votes on funding the closure of Gitmo and the transfer to the homeland of the detainees is a pointed reminder of just how poll-driven the Dems’ attitude towards the WOT has been since 9/11. For all the missteps and blunders that have been committed over the past eight years, thank g-d that we’ve stayed after it, insisting that American blood is not cheap, and that murdering our citizens reaps consequences that are inexorable, severe, and conclusive. There are so many countries out there which lack the will, the means, or both, to defend themselves against The Jihad. The “world citizens” infesting the party in power got a sharp rebuke in Congress today.

Looking back I think Bush a lot knew where this was headed. That piece of shit what is president now doesn’t seem near as confident his policies will survive even ten minutes after his dirty socialist economy-trashing ass is out of power.

What America needs now is a truth commission.
You know, one to go back and identify those authors of “the fury, the vicious slander, the self-righteous outbursts, the impassioned speeches from the floor, the “I accuse†op-eds” and make them eat crow. Publicly.

Comment by Joe on 5/20 @ 7:34 pm #
Harry Reid is not doing this out of principal, but political shrewdness. Obama may even be in on it to give him cover with the nut roots (the lopsided vote suggests that). Still, it is still good.
Comment by SBP on 5/20 @ 7:40 pm #

No question, feets. Last year, Bush had a bunch of talk jocks in the Oval for a pow-wow. One of the things he told them was that it didn’t matter whether McCain or Obama won, whoever had to sit in that office would pretty much have to continue doing what Bush was doing, because once they started reading those Presidential Daily Briefings, they’d realize that there isn’t a lot they can do differently.

Occam’s Razor also implies some nasty razor burn. Take care of that thumb Carin. It’s what separates you from the animals.
Arlen Specter is now climbing onto the “the CIA is a bunch of liars” wagon. Welcome aboard Arlen! Wow, you add a certain, oh, I don’t know, air of “what do you need me to say Harry?” to the mix. Maybe it was either cop to the “liars” meme, or get hazed as a freshman Dem Senator. I hear part of the ritual is holding Robert Byrd’s balls in your mouth. Just for the men of course. The Dem ladies do something else. You’re not supposed to enjoy a hazing.

And its not like Sadaam Hussein was paying suicide bombers or anything.
Hell, Hussein (sadaam not teleprompter jesus) was a stabilizing influence in the midde east- his people adored him and he was well known for his just ways and respect of human liberty. There was no reason to remove him unless we were directly attacked by him.
Wait, you mean he tried to shoot down our planes in the no fly zone ? Well, that’s hardly an attack. Wait, Bill Clinton said regime change was necessary in Iraq ? Well, he was just saying to distract from his latest scandal so the neocon warmongers would leave him alone by giving them some red meat to chew on. Wait, you say Hussein (the iraqi one not the marxist one that’s running our country) refused to comply with numerous resolutions sent by the UN and subsequently broken by Iraq?
I agree with sammy and the left- none of these things matter. What matters is peace, love and dope. And socialism. Lots and lots of socialism.

The twin forces that drive the growth of the Federal government to Caesarean proportions are progressive social policies and worldwide defense commitments. A confirmed big-government man won’t get rid of either, whatever the hippie left screams about.

You’re being unfair to the Caesars, Andrew.
Comment by Andrew the Noisy on 5/21 @ 9:21 am #
I disagree. There were a handful of enlightened ones: Augustus, Vespasian, The Five Goods, a few others. Most of them, however, were nothing but tinpot thugs and upjumped boys. And the strain of the office wore down many a good man. Tiberius’s first nine years in office were among the best in the empire’s history. Then he got crochety and paranoid (See also Claudius, Domitian, Constantine) Hell, even Caligulia had a good few months before he went insane.
Bottom line: we don’t want to go there.
Comment by SBP on 5/21 @ 9:27 am #
So, Andrew, where would you put O!?
I’m thinking Elagabalus, myself.
Comment by Rob Crawford on 5/21 @ 10:10 am #
Seriously, Andrew, I don’t think any of the Caesars ever planned to run the lives of Roman citizens to the extent Obama wants to run ours. They may have considered themselves gods, but I can’t imagine them declaring that Romans are no longer permitted to eat garum and have to ride around in one-horse carts made of cheap wicker.
And I can’t imagine Titus demanding Romans stop digging into the earth, holding up the loss of Pompeii to the effects of Global Angering as a dire example.
Comment by Andrew the Noisy on 5/21 @ 12:36 pm #
Obama would me more entertaining if he were like Elagabulus. As it stands, he’s more of a Nero type: vain, unserious, not untalented yet firmly convinced of his own genius.
Rob, the Roman emperors made worship of the state and themselves compulsory, persecuted religious minorities, violated property rights to feed the Leviathan state and grew an army of petty clerks to eat out the people’s substance. And under Diocletian, controls were placed on the economy for the so-called common good, restrictions on trade, employment, even one’s right to seek one’s own profession.
The result: one thousand years of feudalism.
The Augusti may not have had a nice pre-fab ideological framework for their actions, but the result was the same: tyranny in purest form, with the corresponding degeneration of their civilization.
Comment by Rob Crawford on 5/21 @ 12:50 pm #
Andrew, I was trying to make a joke.
I know how bad the emperors (and the late Republic) were.
ISTR that Gaius Julius Caesar ordered a census and audit of the population of Rome to determine who truly was entitled to the free grain ration. Two thirds of those receiving the ration were ineligible — owned too much property or not Roman citizens.
Thankfully, no one’s repeated the mistakes of the Roman Republic, right?
