    Exxon finally drills Pt. Thomson

    It’s something Alaskans have waited for for nearly 30 years. There is finally activity going on the Pt. Thomson unit of the North Slope.

    “Today, Exxon began drilling the first of two wells that they had planned to drill,” said state Division of Oil and Gas Director Kevin Banks.

    “We’ve been wanting to develop for decades now,” Gov. Sarah Palin said on the phone from Juneau. “And here as of 2:30 this morning we’re finally seeing a well.”

    The last time there was any sort of well drilled at Pt. Thomson was in 1983. But the state says Exxon has been sitting on some of the land they had leased for longer than that.

    “Some of these leases were leased to Exxon and it’s partners as long ago as 1969,” Bank said.

    Because of that decades long wait, the state finally told Exxon in 2006 it had had enough time to get the field developed and pulled the plug on the leases. Exxon appealed saying it really was ready to drill this summer.

    Funny you should mention Mencken. Over the weekend I was reading an anthology of Mencken, things that he wrote in his notebooks (which are better written than most writer’s published works), and it was amazing, reading his comments on FDR and the New Deal, and statism in general, how much of it, with just a change in names, could apply to “Il Dufe” and the current gang of “mountebanks” and “uplifters.”
