Yesterday I pointed out the lawlessness that exists right over our southern border. In many respects, portions of Mexico are no longer under government control. What if Baja were fully under control of criminal gang and they decided they didn’t like the border fence in San Diego nor the law enforcement efforts of California and started firing rockets into San Diego — Say about 80 rockets in one day that rained down on a 25-30 mile area from Chula Vista to downtown San Diego to the Naval shipyards in Coronado to even a few reaching the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station. What do you think the US response would be?
A shrugging of shoulders with talk of erecting a balloon fence? Or a series of military raids to take out the rocket launch sites and the leaders who installed and operated them?
And what would you say of the people who immediately started condemning the US for its response?
Well, as usual, Israel gets fed up with hundreds of rockets fired into its towns since Dec 19th (while “The World” is strangely silent), fights back, and suddenly it is Israel that is to blame for being “addicted to violence”.
And count on American Lefties, both large and small, to engage in their thinly veiled anti-Semitism.
“Disproportionate” applies here, but not the way the anti-Israel groupies mean it.

The situation is clear, and has been since the founding of Israel: after centuries of persecution, pogroms, ghettoes, rape, and robbery, the very concept of Jews who shoot back is horrifying. What if they decide to generalize?
If I were advising an Israeli ambassador or “press secretary”, I would tell him or her not to utter a word of their own. Instead, carry a small amplifier/speaker set connected to an iPod Shuffle pre-loaded with a selection of Palestinian and Hamas pronouncements on the subject, and when asked a question, simply press the button.

Domestic SWAT teams don’t use rockets because they aren’t designed for the job required. If their is ever a domestic hostage situation of the scale that requires rockets, rockets will likely be used.
The reason you don’t give in to hostage takers is because then taking hostages would work. If it works, more criminals are going to do it and more innocent people are going to die. When Hamas, or any other terrorist organization is allowed sanctuary by surrounding themselves with innocents, you are encouraging that behavior and ultimately putting more innocents and risk.

The reason you don’t give in to hostage takers is because then taking hostages would work. If it works, more criminals are going to do it and more innocent people are going to die. When Hamas, or any other terrorist organization is allowed sanctuary by surrounding themselves with innocents, you are encouraging that behavior and ultimately putting more innocents and risk.

That would be excessive force in most cases, yes. If negotiations break down, however, SWAT teams do use automatic weapons, grenades, whatever is required, and if some hostages are killed that is the breaks. The hostage analogy is wayyyyyy off. In this case the hostages are voting the hostage takers into their position, donating money for the hostage takers to purchase body armor and stun grenades to fight off the SWAT team, and allowing them to hold weekly “hate the SWAT” parades down the streets of their city in the years leading up to the standoff.

Any attack on a nation should be met by a proportionate response – and that proportion being what you have, and what you think will keep the attack from being repeated.
I will note that the Egyptian foreign minister condemned Hamas for instigating the Israeli attack. I think that means (a) do not look for help from Egypt, and (b) Egypt isn’t taking any refugees. If the Egyptians move additional military forces to their border with Gaza, then (b) is being emphasized.
The Palestinians want war, and they should be granted all of the war they can stomach.

It isn’t a riddle at all, if you were honest you could admit that. My question gets to the heart of your question, in fact. What would happen if we cast the genies spell on the Israelis, for instance? If they threw their weapons in the sea and vowed to never fight again? They would be immediately overrun, slaughtered to a man, and peace would be achieved.
What would happen if we cast the spell on the Palestinians? Relief groups from around the world would descend on the area, Israel would stop attacking them, drop its border security, and begin trading with the Palestinians and hiring them to help its labor shortage. Peace would be achieved.
So to answer your question, peace is always achieved when one side decides it isn’t worth the fight anymore, the question you should be asking is which side should be discouraged from fighting.

I would argue that the Israeli government is objectively better than the Palestinian one, because it recognizes basic human rights, abides by the rule of law, feeds its people (and some of its neighbors), is a world leader in science and technology, and in general possesses all of the features of a modern, civilized state.
The Palestinian “government” has done none of these things, in fact they seem to regard a reversion to barbarism as a feature. Example among many: I see that their “government” has just legalized crucifixion again.

Our trolls are stuck with the medieval mindset that war is a matter of ‘justice’ (which is just the flip side of ‘revenge’). War is about defending the country (which, in the long run, includes defending allies). Take the whole history out of the picture. If country A is attacked by country B, country A has a right (and must) take whatever steps are necessary to stop country B from attacking; any respect for the population of country B is optional. In this case, country B has not responded to diplomacy, so country A’s options are either do enough damage to country B that they give up or completely annihilate country B.
What makes me fear Iran today is that the same people that are saying that Iran will be deterred from using nuclear weapons are the people blaming Israel for the death of Palestinian human shields. I am expected to believe, however, that if Iran acquires and uses nuclear weapons, these same people will not hesitate to kill 70 million Iranians, most of them innocent.

Once in a great while one of them will deliver him or her self of some pronunciamento that seems to me relevant to the subject of the post as modified by normal thread drift, or pertinent to the meta-subject of the blog, which is the use and misuse of language to encode and transmit, or obscure and conceal, data, information, and meaning. When that happens I offer my thoughts. For convenience, I usually address them formally to the person who set me off, but if they are intended for anyone it is myself (as I often find that expressing my views helps clarify them in my own mind) or other readers.
I most especially don’t give a damn what monkyboy (“alphie”, “parsnip”, others too many to mention, but he(?) will live in my heart under the name he was using when I first encountered him) thinks about anything, but even a lorem ipsum generator throws up an intelligible word occasionally.

Yep. Seeing war as either theft or revenge is such a medieval way of looking at things, and is easily disproved by looking at the behavior of the US after World War II. If a country is attacked and fights back, it can be hard not to make it personal. But the goal and the moral imperative of the defender, must be to stop the attacker, period. By not inflicting enough damage on the Palestinian state to get them to commit to stopping the war, Israel is going to prolong the war and lead to more deaths in the long term for both themselves and the Palestinians, because eventually Israel will either need to give up and die or need to inflict a mortal wound on the Palestinian state.
War is ugly, but sometimes it has to be done. We face the problems with terrorism because past administrations didn’t want to pay the bill (including the bad press of civilian casualties) until the problem got to the level it did. Part of the blame, however, must fall on those that excused using civilians as human shields and gave a distinct military and moral advantage to those that deliberately violate the laws of war.
It’s hard to sit there and say that one would be willing to kill 70 million people for the crimes of their leaders, even as a hypothetical. I’m not sure I would be willing to give that order were I the one that had to do it. But by ignoring that question, we’re making that hypothetical situation more likely to occur. But, instead, the trolls blather on…

Press reports claim 15,000 to 20,000 Hamas men under arms in Gaza, organized into five regional commands. If further claims of 200+ KiA so far are correct or nearly so, I’d think Israel has quite a bit of attacking yet to do if they intend to severely undercut Hamas ability to reorganize and retaliate in the coming weeks and days.
Sadly, it is too late for Hamas to move their installations and stored weapons from among their civilian populations. Those populations have now something amounting to fair warning however. It is not too late for them to remove themselves from buildings they know to be potential targets. I would expect to see just such an exodus over the next few days.

Progressives always leave wiggle room, but in this case they don’t leave enough.
“The main motivation behind war is always theft…” So other motivations may exist, but they are always subordinate to the main motivation, which is theft.
Applying Progressive principles to the American Civil War is entertaining.
The South was not recognized by the North as a State. In fact, the main point of the war was whether or not the South could establish itself as an independent State.
The South’s intent as stated by the North was to preserve its cultural heritage, a central part of which the North intended to abolish.
The incident the North used as an excuse to kick off the war was the shelling, by the South, of a fort belonging to the North. The “shells” were from piddly-ass “eight-pounder” cannon, incapable of doing any damage to the fort that couldn’t be corrected by a few minutes of shoveling. Clearly a mass response, enormous numbers of troops attacking (and killing civilians, damaging private property, etc.) was disproportionate.
Regardless of how you parse it, if you apply the same logic used by Progressives in the matter of Israel vs. Arabs, the American Civil War was a horrid injustice perpetrated by the strong, warlike North against the defenseless South. My grandmother on my mother’s side, and her ancestors, would be highly gratified.

Please. The conflict in that region will end when one party moves or dies. Some cultures are simply incapable of peaceable coexistence in the same region. To claim that talks and diplomacy will fix a blood feud of that nature requires the willful dismissal of history of the region and the scope of the conflict.
The only thing left to do is pick a side or leave the lot of them alone to fight it out amongst themselves. I simply can’t fathom how anyone could pick the Palestinian side of the fight. Their culture is barbaric. Israel is a bastion of human rights by comparison. I mean, looking at organizations like “Queers for Palestine” one can’t help but laugh. Take those same people and drop them in Gaza – their lifespan will be measured in minutes.

I actually don’t think this to be the case. The problem is that the people pushing the Palestinians in to the fight, namely the Palestinian leadership, the leaders of Syria and Iran, and the hardline Wahabi extremists (including a couple big important Saudis) don’t have anything at risk themselves. In fact, they all benefit from the exploiting the violence. The violence will end when Israel manages to make them part of the conflict. By targeting the Hamas leadership, they’ve taken the first step.
What the US can do is bring pressure to bear on the Palestinian backers to add costs and risks to supporting the continued Palestinian warfare, but it’s impossible without substantial international support. And because those backers have oil, the more ethically challenged Western nations are going to look the other way, at least until the monster they’ve let grow starts threatening them, too.

I don’t think most people making the “Iran is going to be deterred from using nukes, because the USSR was deterred!” argument would seriously be in favor of actually killing 70 million Iranians should they actually acquire and use nuclear weapons. So the whole idea of deterring Iran is meaningless, because the Iranians don’t actually expect anyone (besides whatever survives the destruction of Israel) to carry out any retaliation. The whole idea of taking out the Iranian military facilities is to actually avoid having to determine whether to render Farsi a language only spoken in hell.

Sorry but I got a shitty degree in International Politics, and everything I learned and was taught in those 3 and a half years tells me that our interests as nation states are diametrically opposed. Not even going into the history of our two nations, a meaningful, lasting, implemented “peace” treaty (considering we are not at war I am imagining you are saying we will just “get along” with a treaty) is simply fuckin impossible. Of the answers the trolls can give, I don’t know which would be the dumbest. Iran has not been harmed significantly by its almost entirely one-sided war against the United States, so there’s no reason they would stop just because some paper says so. The left’s been pretending Iran’s a peace-loving kite-flying happy paradise for some time now. I believe the US would try to follow such a signed document, only because the international community and the domestic media would hold up any US breach to public scrutiny. They don’t care what Iran does now, and they’re not going to start. And if they don’t believe Iran would be serious about a peace treaty, then why even make the claim?
Iran’s not going to stop until those in power feel that engaging in war (including war by proxy) is personally more risk than it is beneficial to themselves personally. I suspect Ahmidijinadad would even risk his own life if it meant going down in Islamic history books as the guy who killed Israel.

In addition to rewarding a regime that had recently had their finger in our eye, it would be a sellout vis-a-vis the Israelis. Iran has been the most aggressive in funding the Palestinian terrorist groups as well as their Lebanese and Syrian counterparts.
I may be wrong, but If we can’t facilitate peace between the Israeli’s and their immediate neighbors, I don’t have much hope for the kind of deal you’re speculating. And I don’t think that the Saudi’s, UAE, and Kuwaitis would be too happy with us legitimizing Tehran as the big player on the block by favoring wit the “special” kind of treaty it would require…
I wish you could be right, since Iran and Russia are getting a little too close for my former cold warrior comfort. But wishes, are like opinions and assholes; everyone has them! And wishes won’t get secure the middle east…
Unfortunately, I see a upcoming nuclear exchange in the middle east over the next few years. I happen to think that this is one narrowly defined scenario where it would be less devastating, for all parties involved and in the region, if it were our penetrator warheads striking the underground Iranian nuclear development facilities than a surface blast exchange between the Iranians and Israelis…

Well have to agree to disagree on this one. Ultimately, after outfitting their air force and heavy armor, the Iraqi army will be more than a match for the Iranians. And, they’ll have benefitted from training with the US forces and fighting against the insurgents; while all the Iranians do are push around unarmed civilians…
Except for nukes, Iraq will be the strongest regional power within 4 years. Until then, we’ll provide air power to back them up; A-10’s and Apache’s are a good substitute for heavy armor…
And O! has alrady promised to nuke them if they used nukes on anyone in the region. If you believe he can be held to his word, then that will prevent Iran from being the biggest boys on the block…
