Free for me, not for thee [Darleen Click]

Irony

Deserving to be in the spotlight this month is the University of Cincinnati which has announced a policy that allows free speech in one designated campus area only.

Free speech is permissible in the specified area but only after being authorized and scheduled by the Campus Scheduling Office.

Those individuals failing to comply with the policy are threatened with criminal trespassing charges.

They have had some good football teams in recent years, IIRC, but it’s time to change the name to the Care Bearcats.

Well I find this to be a refreshing bit of intellectual honesty on behalf of the university administration…

I mean, most colleges long ago stopped being places of, you know, learning and the free exchange of ideas and outlooks…

  3. Comment by Mr. Pink on 12/18 @ 9:46 am #

I agree Bob at least they are being honest. Cudos to them.

Clicking through to the F.I.R.E. site/article reveals a dateline on this story Dec. 5, 2007. So a year has passed since the institution of this little bit of crazy and thus, some follow up on its effects (or lack thereof, such as ignorage entire may have produced) would be warranted, I think.

Only a bureaucrat could conceive of something so obviously obtuse and present it with a straight face.
“You have free speech – but only in the designated area and only when authorized.”
    “But how are we supposed…”
“Silence! You are not on the schedule and you are not in the zone! Go sign up, and no talking when signing up because you are not in the zone nor have you received your free speech ration card! Silence!”

    I blame liberals.

  10. Comment by alppuccino on 12/18 @ 10:42 am #

One part of the story that was missing is that before you enter the “Circle of Free Speech”, you have to put an explosive collar on. The Dean of Liberal Arts holds the button.

  11. Comment by JD on 12/18 @ 10:44 am #

It is the Bearcats folks. This should come as no suprise. Their men’s basketball program has one of the highest felon to player ratios in the country, and their degree to player ratio is one of the lowest.

Wasn’t the aptly named assclown, the uncite-able, wringing his hands about Rage! earlier up this thread?

Didn’t his dark lord Obama instruct his disciples to be magnanimous in victory, and to reach across the aisle in a gesture of singular solidarity and bonhomie?

I’d cite something here, but that seems so, you know, passe

  74. Comment by assclown on 12/18 @ 11:22 am #

It’s a sad fact these days that any speech which contains rebuttal or disagreement with the left-wingers in this nation is subject to interpretive contortions to suss out nonexistent meanings, and then promptly branded as hate-speech…

I hate to be a dick – ha, ha – but a lot of State universities have a free speech area, and all it means is it’s a place to protest/speak anytime you want, actually I think your free speech has only a set amount of hours of freedom. They have a box and you get up there and stand on the box, ya see, and you speak during your allotment of a designated free speech allocation, meaning, yes, there’s someone there to keep the free speaking all organized, you can’t just have everyone free speechin’ at the same time, duuuh.

At my preferred institution of higher education, the free speech’n box-area is on the pathway between the food court, which includes at least half-a-dozen capitalist food enterprises such as Pizza Hut, Subway, Quiznos, China Express, etc.., and some the buildings which house some of the professors of Liberal Arts. You grab some nachos and a Coke and you take a seat, yep, nice circular area to sit, and listen to “they treated me like a dog, Mr. Wally” screeds and such. The big bang is that you don’t know what whoever is free speechin’ is going to free speech about, well, unless you check the list, so it’s sort’a like open mic night at the Improv. Many readings are made by those who like to write, at least it’s that way on my campus since the free speech box is about twenty paces from the Creative Writing Lab. Sometimes whoever is free speechin brings some friends with slogans on placards, “Save the Bushes,” stuff like that. Most often its just dudes and dudesses reading poems of songs of freedom.

Been there. Seen it. All evil. Mostly Libruls. Carry on.

I’ve been to Europe. Much like here, some things work well and others not so well. You can frame an argument with selected examples either positive or negative. America is a socialist country and only slightly less so than the healthy countries you’d cite as evil failures.

Take the flag pin off. There’s no easy panacea to all problems however the system of funding social services is organized. The only agreement you and I will come to is yes, it is easier to change structures in countries such as Denmark, Finland and even Japan than America. I realize that.

Yes, thor’s attempt at rational debate is laudable. The ascension of the bailout model and retro depression-era thinking are certainly socialist in nature, although the European comparison is superficial in a lot of ways. European socialism is much more entrenched than American socialism, i.e. free tutition to university, labor laws whose intent in the employer-employee relationship is to empower the latter to the detriment of the former, larger unsustainable entitlement programs, cf. Sweden, and wholesale demographic malaise. I was in the Czech Republic with a smattering of students from across the country, and more than an insignificant proportion of us began to entertain conservative values after we took the metro out to the old Communist housing projects.

Why, thank you for the notation of my superior civility. Just a question, good Sir, have you seen the housing projects in America? Your comparing apples to apples thus I’m certain you have.

Were there any other properties in the Czech Republic that caught your eye besides the Soviet era housing projects? A few edifices, or maybe some quaint worthless statues or gargoyles or anything of the like?

Ohhh I could tell you the sound that each and every one of those Moscow motorcycles make, actually. See, when you’re a White God living in a Stalin-scraper in the city center you need to keep your window open at night in the Summer to gain access to the stinkin’ polluted cool air. This relevation might scare some here, but here it comes – Moscow is a big city, much like New York City (show of hands of those who know what NYC is?). Come summertime in the evil empire, every babushkafucker within 10-thousand miles of Moscow makes point to remove his muffler and jolly ride through the city at high speed. A resulting plethora of exhaust pipe harmony bounces off the walls of the buildings and into the open windows of all the visiting White Gods’ and Muscovites’ windows.

4 a.m. fun of killing flies to the sounds of Suzukis – They ain’t got no cure for the summertime blues in Moscow either, outside of well-aimed Baltika bottles. But the Baltika beer bottle wars are another symphony of sound for another time.

  241. Comment by Pellegri on 12/18 @ 1:32 pm #

Can we abbreviate Free Speech Zone to FSZ so we can have more nifty acronyms like assclown?

Also, I did my homework. Turns out both the DNC and the RNC had FSZs during the 2004 elections, and.. (scrolling, scrolling) …whoa! Here’s ACORN again, being supported by the ACLU versus the Secret Service in protesting the existence of FSZs at Bush’s assemblies that kept protesters away from where cameras could see them.

*headscratch* Didn’t Obama do something like this? (Did McCain?) And how much does the Secret Service change from presidency to presidency? Because it sounds more like this is a Secret Service thing than a policy of Republicans or Democrats or the Green Party or whatever–which makes the indignation against it ring hollow when people started protesting it in 2003 without looking for any prior information on the practice.

Also, sir ass, hypocrisy can’t ignore the arrow of time. If the political left was wailing about FSZs in 2003/2004 but now chooses to overlook them as they pop up like mushrooms on college campuses (traditionally thought to be a bastion of progressive thought, etc.) in 2008, whereas the political right was ignoring their existence previously and is now annoyed at them, I’m inclined to say the former is hypocritical while the latter is simply uninformed. Or doesn’t care, since their condemnation of an FSZ’s existence is meant as a blanket condemnation, and do we REALLY need to list every specific instance?

    //

All I know about vacationing in the Czech Republic–well, then Czechoslovakia–was the time my mom had to sleep in her room’s bathtub with a raincoat on because she couldn’t breathe due to allergies while on the feather mattress provided. Living south of San Francisco, cynn, I’m not sure it does.

I mean, there are some very nice parts of San Francisco! …but then they get overrun by hobos and gang violence. Case in point–the Metreon used to be a very swanky, upscale Sony…gimmick, I guess, since it was hip and trendy and had all these neat little restaurants and an arcade based on the art of this one guy and a “The Way Things Work” store and all sorts of stuff. Then the vendors leasing there progressively went out of business, and it started to fall apart. Now it’s a monument to decay and…kinda sad. Last year there was a fatal shooting right outside–and this was supposed to be a decent part of town.

I dunno; perhaps I’m being too harsh on SF. But while I enjoy my visits there, they’ve always been tainted with memories of the parts of town where my parents told me to lock the car doors so we didn’t get jacked at a stoplight.

While we bat our trolls about free speech zones at political events or governor’s mansions 12 years past, college campuses are enforcing rules that not only restrict free speech but try and indoctrinate students into “proper” views on a variety of subjects.

Note in the article that despite a firestorm of protest and the programs cancellation, the residence department has attempted to re institute the program three times since then. Thankfully the faculty board has rejected the requests, no doubt still smarting from the whupping they took when this “all whites are racists” training program was running.

sorry. Here was something interesting. I saw a guy get wired today. He was sort of a hispanic sort and they tucked a mic inside his collar. They got out of some some car on Ventura and there was another car parked in front of that one what people got out of. This one was a parking enforcement vehicle. And some Latina lady that had done the wiring got a camera out of the parking enforcement one – a real very professional digital movie camera thing. They weren’t trying to be hidey or anything, but they didn’t look like they wanted to be ask what was up. And we watched them for awhile but they didn’t do anything with the camera. It was probably something very mundane and journalisty or an internal video for whatever purpose but you couldn’t tell for sure and it bugs me I’ll never know.
