… for choosing Pastor Rick Warren to give the invocation, if for no other reason than it is irritating the crap out of the usual Leftcult bigots.
Heh.
UPDATE Erstwhile conservative, Excitable Andy, gets his self-pitying scold on…
Shrewd politics, but if anyone is under any illusion that Obama is interested in advancing gay equality, they should probably sober up now. He won’t be as bad as the Clintons (who, among leading Democrats, could?), but pandering to Christianists at his inauguration is a depressing omen.

Go read Machiavelli’s Mandragola. It’s the same book, disguised as a political tractatus. The reason that it was so reviled in the Renaissance is that it’s not really directed at the Prince at all, though that is it’s animating cover, under the regime of censorship. In fact, it is a representation to the people that has one over-riding message: you are taking it up the ass.

The thing is that Rick Warren is about as mainstream as an Evangelical gets. If you listened to how he ran the “Civil Forum” his church hosted last August, he was pretty even-handed with both Barry and McCain…which drove the Left into fits.
That the Left wants to cast Warren as some evil, slobbering, faux-Xtian can, and should, backfire on them. They refuse to see a good faith disagreement of policy with the reasonable Warren - Warren MUST BE A HATE-FILLED BIGOT for daring to disagree with them. They try to paint him into the cartoon stereotype they create with any godbotherer.
Mandy, Jill, et al, all tools.

Once again: the Petulant Left was never part of the Obama clique. Claiming a place at the table will get — justly so — the response, “I didn’t ask you to sign on, you jumped on the bandwagon…and now, you’re getting thrown under it”.

Pastor Warren’s invocation (if he’s actually allowed to go through with this) will be the inaugural high point for me. This is a political curve ball, but whether it’s thrown at the lefty sorts or to the conservatives remains to be seen. I’m betting the invocation won’t happen.
Comment by McGehee on 12/17 @ 8:59 pm #
My sense of Obama’s views on that ghey stuff is that this is a lot less cynical than the proggs would like to believe. After all, (so they say) if Obama hadn’t brought out the black vote in California, Prop. 8 would have lost.
In any case, I’m not inclined to make anything out of it. The more that proggs hear from us dextro types about Teh O!ne, the more they will find excuses to defen him even while he makes them cringe and wail and rend their garments.
That’s really a dish best marinated in pure progg angst, unsweetened by gratuitous dextroschadenfreude.

The only thing that surprises me is that there are some Obama cultists who are daring to criticize him.
Look at the blanket denial we saw here in regard to the lying-to-the-press incident.
These people have projected their own desires and beliefs onto the empty suit, even when the empty suit’s own statements demonstrate otherwise.
Obama will bring peace — despite the fact that he threatened to attack Pock-ee-stawn, a friggin’ nuclear-armed nation.
Obama will legalize gay marriage — despite the fact that the President has no authority in that area, and despite the fact that he’s on record as being consistently opposed to gay marriage.
Obama will clean up government — despite the fact that he comes from one of the most corrupt political cultures on the planet, one in which you don’t get anywhere without knowing people and exchanging favors.

You scratch the surface, Spies, you scamp: During a period of great anti-American sentiment and coupled with the reascendency of much of the globe historically most hostile to the US or its principles, Obama will preside over the biggest and longest-term economic implosion in nearly a century. All this despite the inherent superiority of Lightworkers.
While desperately needing to reindustrialize without the cash to do it, how will we provide for our own defense against the Arab world’s designs, the communists (should they alter their post-crash position on international commerce), and the corruption of the resurgent, militarized Russian state?

Oh, yeah, JHoward. It’s not going to be pretty.
The really amusing thing is how many of them were convinced that Obama was lying just to get elected. “Oh, he’s really in favor of gay marriage… he’s just saying that!” Never did it enter their minds that voting for a highly-skilled liar might not be a good idea, nor did they ever question what other things he might be lying about.

That’s so freakin’ worrisome. The problem being that BHO’s fall will be all-of-us inclusive: his fall will be our fall.

Where was that sentiment the last 8 years? I mean did we not have the 9-11 attack, 2 wars, Russia invade Georgia, and Iran’s continueing nuclear research? I guess when George Bush “failed” it was just in existential things such as his Iraq “adventure” or whenever people can blame him for an economic downturn.
Comment by JHoward on 12/18 @ 8:17 am #
Indeed. It’s evolution in action. We wanted a Savior and got what we deserved. We tried to dope the way things work and we lost.
So now we’re faced with not only competing on equal terms, but competing with five dozen trillions in current and future overheads and a locked up monetary system before we leave the blocks. Seems to me our only hope is to out-compete on natural resources. Of course, we’ll instead spend inordinate sums and time on seeing to the slack and the grifting, the corrupt and the powerful, that being the New New Deal.
This would be a superb time to reinvent classical liberalism. Do we have the stomach for it? Based on the election, probably not. Let’s see what we feel like doing in twelve or eighteen months.

Barry will not be the shining light of hope for the gay crowd and it’s likely they already know it.
My gay Sis in law’s partner is pretty savvy politically. She has been complaining all along that Barry doesn’t give a hoot about gays. She never in her wildest dreams foresaw what happened in California when Blacks rushed to the polls, voted 96% for Obama and 70% for Prop 8.Barry will protect his church constituent blacks before he concedes anything of importance to the LGTB crowd.
What I find both amusing and ironic is that gays find themselves much in the same position as conservatives and the so-called “Religious Right.” Both sides were forced to vote for a candidate that they knew really didn’t represent their interests or stay home. Neither were going to to bring themselves to vote for the opponent. In the case of Gays I suspect that the realization is dawning that, as a political force to be reckoned with on a national scale, their influence is not nearly as grand as they have assumed it to be.
That realization has got to leave an emerging mark that no amount of intimidating Mormons on marriage will heal.
