I think you’re taking this too seriously, Sdferr.

    You’re probably right Dan.

It was refreshing to hear Laura Ingraham this morning declare that Obama didn’t actually mean to link the two lipsticks, and Brit Hume, whom she interviewed, agreed. Glenn Beck also agreed that it wasn’t deliberate.

I don’t think it was, either, but c’mon, O! Surely you are brilliant enough to see how the linkage could be made! You couldn’t wait a few weeks more to use that analogy?

  6. Comment by Mr. Pink on 9/10 @ 11:01 am #

People keep calling this guy smart. Is there a new definition of intelligence today that relates to the intelligence YOU think everyone else has? Cause this m#ther f#cker must think we are all complete idiots.

  7. Comment by psycho... on 9/10 @ 11:02 am #

I watched it without sound, so as not to be prejudiced by the dumb shit he says. Just watched.

There’s a moment where he looks back at the giant-headed black dude stage right, to make sure a line came off. Any comedians here? You know. The “black check” means you know you’re dying.

Whatever he said then, that’s when he fucked up.

  8. Comment by TaiChiWawa on 9/10 @ 11:02 am #

    Next on “That’s Our Barry”:

“Now Ms. Palin says she has a clean record, but I say hogwash!”

    “What? What did I say?”

  9. Comment by Mr. Pink on 9/10 @ 11:03 am #

There is no way he wasn’t refering to her as a pig. His very next sentence was calling McCain old.

  10. Comment by SarahW on 9/10 @ 11:04 am #

No, all the evidence points to deliberate allusion.
And yet, perhaps he is shocked, shocked, to find people affronted.

    What a handy distraction.

  11. Comment by Dread Cthulhu on 9/10 @ 11:05 am #

Dan Collins: “I think you’re taking this too seriously, Sdferr.”

I’m not so sure — the Obama campaign seems perfectly comfortable with the on-going meme that a vote against Obama is a vote for racism. Why shouldn’t Obama enjoy the rough side of the media?

  12. Comment by Dread Cthulhu on 9/10 @ 11:08 am #

dicentra: “It was refreshing to hear Laura Ingraham this morning declare that Obama didn’t actually mean to link the two lipsticks, and Brit Hume, whom she interviewed, agreed. Glenn Beck also agreed that it wasn’t deliberate.”

I respectfully disagree — do you think it a coincidence that the two examples he used were an old fish and a pig with lipstick, when he’s running against an elder statesman and a female governor / hockey mom?

I think, as a minimum, he didn’t look too closely at the speech, pre-teleprompter loading, and that one of his speech-writers, as a minimum, was being too cute by half.

  13. Comment by Mr. Pink on 9/10 @ 11:10 am #

Honestly Obama should fire his speech writer and just have random comments from the DailyKos fed to his teleprompter.

  14. Comment by Sdferr on 9/10 @ 11:13 am #

Dread, the dude wasn’t on a teleprompter for crying out loud. It wasn’t a “speech” per se, which isn’t to say he hadn’t thought about his remarks at least in outline before he gave them, just that there was an ad lib-by feel to them. Obama is always too cute by half, that’s just who he is.

  15. Comment by Dread Cthulhu on 9/10 @ 11:14 am #

Mr Pink: “Honestly Obama should fire his speech writer and just have random comments from the DailyKos fed to his teleprompter.”

That shores up his base and scares the bejeebers out of middle America… what do you have for an encore?

  16. Comment by Mr. Pink on 9/10 @ 11:17 am #

For an encore he can play Excitable Andy in a game of one-on-one basketball and laugh as O! tries to stay at least 3-1/2 inches away at all times.

  17. Comment by TmjUtah on 9/10 @ 11:18 am #

Watching Barak Obama ad lib on the stump is liking watching a neighbor pursue his dream of manned space flight via his garage workshop.

The table saw runs around the clock, but aside from intermittent visits from the fire men and building inspectors, not much else happens.

  18. Comment by Dread Cthulhu on 9/10 @ 11:20 am #

Sdferr: “Dread, the dude wasn’t on a teleprompter for crying out loud. Obama is always too cute by half, that’s just who he is.”

It was a canned line — he bobbled it the first try and backed up for a second chance. He wanted that line, that *specific* line, in that speech at that moment. This also a fella that was using teleprompters in his town hall meetings, which ’splains his reluctance to do joint town hall meetings with McCain.

He went where he went with malice aforethought… matched only by his running-mates thoughtlessness, asking the fella in the wheel-chair to stand up and take a bow.

  19. Comment by Mr. Pink on 9/10 @ 11:20 am #

It is laughable to think that now Joe Biden is the one telling O! to restrain his mouth.

  20. Comment by cranky-d on 9/10 @ 11:24 am #

I’m willing to assume it was not deliberate. If you have ever watched him extemporize, you can see that he is incredibly bad at it. He apparently has great difficultly picking the words he is going to say next, and I think this time his internal censor took a short vacation. I think it might more be that he was grabbing at some folksy aphorisms in order to make himself look more like “one of us” (you know, the great unwashed masses) and again failed miserably.

  21. Comment by Topsecretk9 on 9/10 @ 11:24 am #

His whole “Paulesay, Paulesay, Paulesay” riff was an almost line by line ripoff of a WAPO cartoon

    http://newsbusters.org/blogs/warner-todd-huston/2008/09/10/did-obama-steal-his-lip-stick-pig-speech-political-cartoon

Which suggests this was all carefully crafted. His army 300 failed him and he failed them, because he doesn’t have the acumen to know to strike it. Judgement.

  22. Comment by Sdferr on 9/10 @ 11:29 am #

Yoiks. Nice catch-gasm, TSK9 and a well done to you Nwsbstrs peoples too!

  23. Comment by mojo on 9/10 @ 11:33 am #

Yeah, keep pluggin’ there, Jughead. Smarmy is JUST what I’m lookin’ for in a Presidential candidate.

  24. Comment by Dread Cthulhu on 9/10 @ 11:33 am #

Yeah, TSK9… that is a great catch and opens up a greater question — did Biden write the speech for Obama?

  25. Comment by Dread Cthulhu on 9/10 @ 11:35 am #

Throw in the fact that Obama’s shills are out there saying “lipstick can’t hide Pallin’s track-record” undercuts the lack of malice / intent in Obama’s use of that formulation as a poke in the eye.

  26. Comment by Log Cabin on 9/10 @ 11:39 am #

It is laughable to think that now Joe Biden is the one telling O! to restrain his mouth.

Yep, and Biden yesterday spent his time telling some guy in a wheelchair to “stand up”! It seems that the team of Robinette and Hussein are in a competition to say the stupidest thing. There is just too much comedy gold this week to spotlight it all.

  27. Comment by Techie on 9/10 @ 11:40 am #

After telling us on at least four separate occasions that Republican messages have to be searched for “racist code words and subtexts”, I’m enjoying making Obama! twist in the wind for a bit for something taken at instant face value.

But that’s just me. My Democrat Sexism Decoder Ring gives me the go-ahead.

  28. Comment by cranky-d on 9/10 @ 11:49 am #

The evidence is mounting against me I think. I tend to prefer to not ascribe to evil what can be blamed on stupidity, but in this case I am starting to look wrong. Such is life.

  29. Comment by cranky-d on 9/10 @ 11:50 am #

Yep, and Biden yesterday spent his time telling some guy in a wheelchair to “stand up”!

So Biden is now a faith healer? Wow. I heard that means he’s kinda weird, then.

  30. Comment by Randy R on 9/10 @ 12:03 pm #

The McCain campaign knows that The One’s Achilles’ heel is his thin-skinned narcissism which is why they turned the smiling assassin and her stiletto loose on him at the convention. They had to know that watching some nobody from Mayberry-on-the-tundra making fun of him would send him around the bend. This was probably Obama’s attempt to get back at her with a zinger of his own but he’s just really, really bad at it.

  31. Comment by JBean on 9/10 @ 12:10 pm #

He apparently has great difficultly picking the words he is going to say next, and I think this time his internal censor took a short vacation. I think it might more be that he was grabbing at some folksy aphorisms in order to make himself look more like “one of us” (you know, the great unwashed masses) and again failed miserably.

The thing is, there was no stuttering, um, uh, uh on this one — it wasn’t off the cuff. You can count on it. What torques me is how when he’s criticized for this stuff, he whines that it’s him being “smeared.”  Enough already. He knows exactly what the game plan is, Chicago style. He is no innocent.

  32. Comment by Stiv on 9/10 @ 12:10 pm #

They want to keep Barry rattled, and if a little phony outrage keeps him coming back for more that’s how they should play it. He’s still running against Sarah Palin and that’s right where they want him. It’s hard to be a Lighworker when you think you have to prove you’re not a Lightweight. They just have to be careful not to overplay it.

  33. Comment by Topsecretk9 on 9/10 @ 12:12 pm #

the democrat party site- on Palin – Aug. 30th – complete with make-up on a pig image

Palin does not change one single thing of what the Republicans are offering which is four more years of George Bush. All that McCain did was to put lipstick on the Pig (the Bush Administration whose failed strategies have wrecked our nation). Nothing has changed except for an exciting and sexy dash of lipstick to freshen up their tired old face of more of the same.
The same people who do not like the Bush Administration for what it has done to this nation are not going to be fooled by the lipstick on the pig. And it they think that the American public are so stupid that they will rush over now and kiss their pig of a platform because it is wearing a fresh touch of lipstick, well I think they will be surprised. Economically, the majority of Americans are at the breaking point. Most American families literally cannot stand another four more years of the same.

That is exactly why we had so many Republicans giving testimony at our convention as to why they were crossing over. The message was the same: They simply could no longer afford to vote Republican. Palin does not change that message. She is more of the same.

from TSK9’s link at 33. Some times a good old fashioned proof-read would just be wrong.

Joe Biden is no John Kerry. He shoulda brought the Lightworker.

  37. Comment by steph on 9/10 @ 12:26 pm #

No, he is no innocent. I believe it was a deliberate allusion, evidenced by the audience’s reaction to it (they’re a fun group, by the way. Is this the same audience who laughed so heartily at his remarks about speaking another language? Woo-hoo, so very funny).

However, I think it is now we who now are being a liitle too thin-skinned, and more protective of Palin than we need to be. If we are going to get upset about remarks like these, the O will become “victim” in some eyes, deserving of sympathy.
Getting caught up in this crap diverts attention from issues. I think McCain/Palin can win on those merits alone.

McCain: “the vietnamese can break my bones…
Palin: … but names can never hurt me”.

  38. Comment by Randy R on 9/10 @ 12:27 pm #

Somebody should get a screen grab of that Pig In Lipstick page before it slips down the memory hole.

I’m not so sure — I think we shouldn’t dwell on it, but we should call him on it. Obama doesn’t know how to handle fly-over country. Keep him flustered, keep him focused on Pallin… just stick and move.

This isn’t about protecting Palin. She’s a big girl, and no stranger to dirty politics, judging by the mud being slung by her rivals in Alaska. I’m sure that didn’t start with her nomination.  It’s about letting the left set new lows for political discourse for eight years, with only a maybe a year’s break after 9/11.  It started with the “stealing the 2000 election” theme, then progressed to Bushhitler fighting a war for oil backed by redneck Xtianist Rethuglicans, marching in fascist lockstep to establish a theocratic dictatorship.

Bush took the high road, or whatever it was he was doing — and didn’t fight back, except to get out the vote in 2004.  What did that accomplish? Add to that the pigfest by congressional Republicans, Bush’s spending, his fading into the sunset on Gitmo and other issues, and the Democratic takeover in 2006 was inevitable. You don’t win anything with a dispirited electorate. The discourse can’t get any lower than what it is, so fight back.

  41. Comment by pan on 9/10 @ 1:18 pm #

Wow. If you think that the comment was clearly intended that way, you’re an idiot or so hopelessly party-before-country that you’ll believe anything that party tells you to believe. And that’s all besides the point that the attention from the “Liberal Media” for this silliness if off the charts.

  42. Comment by mojo on 9/10 @ 1:23 pm #

Ah, but pan, we’ve been getting exactly this level of mendacious bullshit from the left for freakin’ decades. Sure, we know “lipstick on a pig” is a well-worn metaphor, but we just like having the opportunity to fuck with y’all on that level. It’s refreshing. Invigorating, even.

As for the liberal media, they manage to beclown themselves without our help.

  43. Comment by Dread Cthulhu on 9/10 @ 1:26 pm #

Pan: “Wow. If you think that the comment was clearly intended that way, you’re an idiot or so hopelessly party-before-country that you’ll believe anything that party tells you to believe. ”

Then why did the crowd cheer for a tired rubber-chicken of a phrase, pan? Why is he so defensive in the aftermath?

Obama’s words created an opening. Obama’s narcissism and thin skin all but guaranteed he’d whine at the riposte. Any way you slice it, pan, Obama’s comes up bologna.

  44. Comment by AJB on 9/10 @ 1:28 pm #

Does this blog ever actually discuss issues relevant to the well-being of the world and the country? Or is it just another repository for stupid gaffes and sensationalistic trash that doesn’t matter?

“This Election is Not About Issues”
    Rick Davis, McCain’s campaign manager

    Pretty much sums it up.

  45. Comment by TaiChiWawa on 9/10 @ 1:30 pm #

If you think that the comment was clearly intended that way, you’re an idiot

If Obama did not recognize the way his comment might be perceived, he is an idiot.

  46. Comment by mojo on 9/10 @ 1:32 pm #

Hey, are we back to the “intentionalism” topic?

  47. Comment by Mr. Pink on 9/10 @ 1:40 pm #

You know the lipstick/pig comment was about Palin because his next comment mentions an old fish and change, where he would be referring to McCain pulling a Clinton at the RNC convention and stealing the other parties platform. I would think that would piss O!off since it the CHANGE is thing he can run on.

An Obama backer is going to try to argue this is about issues? Are you serious, dude?

  51. Comment by Percy Dovetonsils on 9/10 @ 2:01 pm #

“Does this blog ever actually discuss issues relevant to the well-being of the world and the country?”

Yes, but this is a HELL of a lot more fun. I’ve never before watched the news and, seeing the Omessiah bumble about, used the same phrase once uttered by the great Joe Pesci: “Dance, you stuttering prick!”

(And really, like you give a flying f*ck about our discussions or opinions.)

  52. Comment by JD on 9/10 @ 2:02 pm #

AJB is finally right about something. This election is about the suspension of disbelief and subsequent adoration of The One.

  53. Comment by Matt, Esq. on 9/10 @ 2:05 pm #

Barraky was engaging in a double speak. He didn’t MEAN to call Palin a pig but if the faithful disciples took it that way and cheered, then he’s ok with it.

  54. Comment by Bob Reed on 9/10 @ 3:27 pm #

I’ll give O! the benefit of the doubt this time; He couldn’t be stupid enough to try another slick maneuver like when he gave Hillz the finguh, could he???

In any case, he would have been better off just stating that he had no bad intent, and apologizing if anyone took it that way. As it came off, his tone-combined with the crowd reaction-makes it sound like some prankster laughinly apologizing to a crowd after pulling a sophmoric practicle joke…

    O! : No guys, really, I didn’t mean to put itching powder in Richie’s jockstrap…No, c’mon guys, really I didn’t..!

Or maybe he should have just said something like:“I’m disappointed in Barack…He’s not the messiah I used to know…”

I can’t watch this yet but one of Baracky’s NPR hoochies gave him four unfiltered unchallenged unquestioned minutes to make it all better and form what I can tell what our Baracky did this morning was call a fairly-rare-for-him press conference to talk about how stupid it is to talk about what the Republicans want to talk about. He’s sort of a twit I think, at least sometimes.

    A victim.

    Someone deserving of sympathy.
