It’s a *great* pick. Livens up the conservative base without scaring off the evangelicals (like Romney would have done). Puts some of the women for Hillary in play. Gives McCain a way to say, “Let’s drill in ANWR” — and not look like a total flip-flopper but a guy who got taught a thing or two by the nice lady who’s actually from Alaska, been to ANWR, and knows it’s a dump that won’t be badly affected by a couple of well-placed drills. And yes, the moose will be okay.
But more fundamentally, it says that McCain is willing to listen to somebody who differs from him on some issues. She’s a credible, proven tax-cutter and has taken on “big oil”, which will play well among many. She’s worked and raised a family and is more of a “normal” person than Obama or Biden (thus also better than Romney). And really, she’s got no less actual foreign policy experience than Romney or Jindal, whom many people wanted to see on the other half of the ticket.
This was a terrifically happy surprise. For the first time, I’m enthusiastic about supporting McCain.

I’m amazed he made the almost-least-worst choice — Olympian judgment, by McCain standards. And his looking past her apparent incorruptibility (though probably only far enough to see her vag) is plain freakish.

He only needs two or three points of them, in less than a handful of states. Any woman gets him that many overall, and the type she is gets him the right ones (unless she suddenly gets way sexier — or crush-on-Palin dudes take her place in the media (which is how I’d do it if I were working for the other guy, which they are)).

That’s not a bug, it’s a feature. Last I saw, it still remained to be seen whether the lite-gubnor up there, Sean Parnell, will be running for Congress. Presumably that will be settled by the end of the GOP convention.
I still think she’s not seasoned enough to justify this — it is exactly as Jeff says, identity politics in action, and extremely disappointing to see in a GOP presidential ticket.
Then again, with McCain what can we expect?

I don’t think she was chosen solely because she’s a woman. She was chosen because she’s a woman with more experience than the candidate the Dems are running for President.

I agree that I would have preferred she remain governor for a while longer before he debut in national politics. I thought she, along with the governor of LA, would’ve made a formidable pair. I also agree that it is obviously identity politics at its finest, but that is really my least objection since I hope it will bring the reality of identity politics even more to the forefront and hopefully make some people see how destructive it is.
The more you think about it, though, the more unassailable she becomes. You cannot attack her on experience or age unless you are willing to see the fallout attach it self to Obama. She certainly has the conservative bonifides, which are important to the purported base that McCain enjoys annoying.
Anyway, it’s done. We shall see how she does in her debate(s).

I’m with jeff on this one….back to the basement working out and thinking about my own little pot of paradise, and eschewing the watching of the Republicratic cartwheels.
so what the hell, where do you see the differences in USA a year from now with either party in the White House? Gridlock, is my answer.

And a reasonable one, except I think it far more likely with the GOP ticket than with the Sainted O! and Cottonmouth Joe. But gridlock has it’s upsides as well.
For one, it’s hard to keep the rest of the Dinobots in line without him.
