First, Obama plays the race card again
Nobody really thinks that Bush or McCain have a real answer for the challenges we face, so what they’re going to try to do is make you scared of me. You know, he’s not patriotic enough. He’s got a funny name. You know, he doesn’t look like all those other presidents on those dollar bills, you know.
Leave aside yet another Barry gaffe, this time about the many dollar bills that bear the faces of people who were not presidents, kind of to be expected in the rush of the audacity of the declaration that “nobody” anywhere in anyway can think that those ugly Republicans are up to any good, Barry’s own campaign frankly admits
Obama aides said the candidate’s remarks were no different from applause lines he has used for months. At a mid-June fundraiser in Jacksonville, Fla., for instance, Obama said: “They’re going to try to make you afraid of me. He’s young and inexperienced and he’s got a funny name. And did I mention he’s black?’
This “to criticize or joke about Me, you must be racist” meme that has been a subtle undercurrent in the ostensible post-racialist twaddle Camp Obama has peddled from the beginning is getting just a bit too much publicity. Enter, stage left, Barry’s star power peer, Ludacris releasing a particularly loathsome rap …
paint the White House black and I’m sure that’s got ‘em terrified
McCain don’t belong in ANY chair unless he’s paralyzed
… reinforcing the only thing the Dems have to run on … White people are ‘terrified’ of a black president and McCain is teh OLD!!!!1!1!!
This also conveniently provides a wonderful opportunity for Camp Obama to “denounce” Ludacris.
Ludacris’ lyrics get repeated, Barry gets the trifecta of keeping McCain’s age in the spotlight, his own race card off the table and a chance to channel Claude Rains and be shocked, SHOCKED by the rapper’s crudeness. A stance that gets Practically Perfect Barry lots of sympathetic and [even more] admiring press for his “Sister Soulja” moment.
If you think this moment wasn’t contrived, I have some nice ocean front property in Arizona to sell you.

Good gracious, it’s only August. Will we have Jacksonj and Sharpton as the point men for dissecting and identifying all negative ads as “racist” and “fear mongering?” Maybe Obama’s campaign can put up a “hate thermometer” on their website, updated daily with new incidents of campaign bias.
The way this guy has successfully pimped both race and slavery (original sin) causes me to request that when our government apologizes for the institution they expressly exclude Barack.
Harsh, I know, but thor doesn’t seem to mind if, like sashal, the election of the empty suit Chicago machine politician lier expunges the hated neocon. Just out of curiousity, thor, what’s your reaction to Ludacris’ rap about McCain? While I’m sure nishi is cackling like the Wicked Witch about it I was just curious as to whether or not you had anything to say.
Other than, you know, the usual imputing of racist motivations in those who criticize Obama.

Michigan’s got TWO (fucking) retards running things, who have NO idea what they are doing and cannot lead. Jenny can’t lead because she doesn’t have a CLUE how to do it, and Kwame can’t lead because he doesn’t have the morality to do what’s right and has put his own personal goals ahead of everything else.
If anyone, when they were running, had evaluated whether EITHER of them had anything that proved that they were qualified to handle office (neither did) than perhaps Michigan and Detroit wouldn’t be as fucked.

McCain really seems to have this snake by the tail. With the “bare-knuckle†support of the NYTimes being necessary to attempt to stop the hemeroging, it’s obvious that McCain has hit the jugular of Campaign Obama.
And this racist claim is just so bogus to not be believed. The only campaign who even mentioned race until the McCain campaign comments yesterday was .. you guessed it .. the Obama campaign, who kept referring to racial stereotypes of whites.

When Jennifer Granholm was running for governor, I remember one of the Detroit News’ columnists, Laura Berman, getting all excited and encouraging people to vote for granholm because she would be the first woman governor. That was it, the sole reason that Berman saw to elect a governor.
Voting for anyone based on such irrelevant criteria as that person’s type of genetalia or the color of that person’s skin is about as vapid a reason as it gets. Doing so does have one benefit, though – it lets everyone else know how shallow that voter is and how trustworthy is his judgment.

thor, you appear not to have had your third drink yet, and Karl isn’t here to irritate you, so you’re being coherent. That being the case, I have a question: what qualifications do you see in Obama?
Now, I’m not a big one for qualifications in the first place. Serving in a major political office requires a completely different skill set from the ordinary one(s), and I’ve been known to suggest that we’d get a better set of politicians if they were selected at random. To improve on that, I would suggest that we allow people to check a box on their income tax return to say they were willing to serve — and select politicians at random from those who don’t volunteer.
But you appear to believe in qualifications, and to see something in Obama’s background that qualifies. What is it? The man’s never won a contested election; every project he’s ever been associated with has resulted in disaster for its putative beneficiaries but generated lots of graft, which I suppose is a “qualification” for Chicago politics; his only accomplishment is his own self-aggrandizement. What do you see as Obama’s substantive qualifications for office?
Regards,
Ric
Comment by Education Guy on 8/1 @ 6:40 am #
Obama should be careful about going for the race card too often, as I imagine the sort of votes he needs now won’t much like hearing that the reason they may disagree with some of his policy suggestions is due to the fact that they are terrified of his blackness. Some of them are likely to start wondering if that is going to be his response to every criticism should he get elected. I don’t suspect the American citizen is so stupid as to not notice that were there the sort of racism he seems to find around every corner, that he would have risen to being one of the 2 possible choices for the position of the most powerful man in the world.

I am with Thor on this. There is so much interesting pathos that is manifested in each and every (increasingly more hysterical and shrill) post about Obama on PW. He is completely the opposite of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, yet he has been branded as a race hustling pimp – he can’t speak about his race without someone “shaking with rage”. That, combined with the virulent, vicious anger coming out of this place at the idea of the United States apologizing for participating in slavery – is tragic and deeply disappointing to me.

Carin, Ric, B Moe, if you don’t think Barack Obama is qualified to be President, I’m OK with that. I think he has a chance to win without the benefit of your votes.
Barack Obama was, evidently, a good student. He was admitted to and graduated from Columbia. Shrtly thereafter he moved to Chicago and learned the wily ways of inner-city politics before attending Harvard Law. He became President of Harvard Law Review and graduated magna cum laude. He spent roughly ten years in state of Illinois political offices before winning a seat in the Senate by the largest margin in Illinois history.
The rest is history, as they say, and when they say that they’re describing his Presidential primary upset of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. Obama’s victory was likely the greatest upset in American Presidential primary history.
He is who he is. His accomplishments are what they are. He’ll win or lose based on if he wins enough votes in the electoral college. He is young. He’s not the most experienced. But anyone who says Barack Obama is not accomplished or experienced to a degree is fuckin’ deluded.

Lisa: “He is completely the opposite of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, yet he has been branded as a race hustling pimp – he can’t speak about his race without someone “shaking with rageâ€Â.”
No, Lisa. It is simply that he cannot claim to be a racially-transcendent candidate and then play the race card without being called on his hypocrisy.
Lisa: “That, combined with the virulent, vicious anger coming out of this place at the idea of the United States apologizing for participating in slavery – is tragic and deeply disappointing to me. ”
“Virulent, vicious anger?” What would disturb you more, Lisa — an old woman shaking her finger at you? Even you admit that almost no one cares about the matter — if no one cares and the mischief that would follow being fairly obvious, why bother?
thor: “Barack Obama was, evidently, a good student. He was admitted to and graduated from Columbia.”
Not that impressive, particularly by your own standard — one could point out, using your argument, that Bush was a good student, having been admitted to and graduated from Yale and Harvard.
thor: “He spent roughly ten years in state of Illinois political offices before winning a seat in the Senate by the largest margin in Illinois history. ”
He did almost nothing whilst in state of Illinois political offices, voting “present” much of the time. That “largest margin in Illinois history” was achieved against a political tomato-can — a carpet bagging last minute replacement candidate with no local ties.
thor: “He is who he is.”
He is who he has to be, playing the man of the people in the streets of Chicago, the coastal elitist when before San Francisco donors, etc.

I’m not hysterical… I am, in fact, very disappointed. Before I knew anything about Obama I was very curious and pretty hopeful. I, indeed, wanted to see some talent in the next generation that will be coming up.
I don’t doubt Barry’s love of country, I just question what kind of America he DOES love? Barry specifically disses McCain and Bush’s love of country “they don’t care about the challenges”, which is underlined by Harry Reid’s “Republicans want to deny power to old people and disabled people”. Barry has outlined a vision of America that resembles authoritarian Europe, not American values of liberty, self-sufficiency, charity and optimism.

Does you honestly believe that a Chicago bred politician leaves anything in his/her campaign to chance?
Why do you think O! rarely goes off script or off teleprompter?
Comment by Great Banana on 8/1 @ 7:18 am #
I agree that “accomplishments” or “qualifications” matter little to those of us who have a consistent political philosophy. If Obama had any actual accomplishments or experience to boast of, I still would not vote for him, as I think he is wrong on every single issue and I think his life-long associations pretty clearly demonstrate that he is an extreme left winger / black liberation theology guy.
However, I am interested in the idea that some of you (Lisa, Thor) claim he has “qualifications” or “experience”. Would you at least admit that if you were deciding purely on “experience” or “qaulifications” then you would vote for McCain? I’m not saying that you should vote for McCain, as I understand you are leftists (Lisa – just admit it to yourself, you are) and you want to further a leftist ideology. I don’t agree with that, but that is a respectable decision.
Thor seems to claim that Obama is qaulified b/c:
1 – he was a “good” student (Has he released his grades from any school yet – I was under the impression that those are being kept a big secret);
2 – He got into Harvard law (again, has he released his LSAT score or his H.S. grades? Just curious if he actually “earned” his admittance versus being an affirmative action admittance)
3 – He was editor of the Harvard Law Review (it is my understanding that he neither wrote on the review or graded on the reveiw (and I don’t beleive he has released his Harvard grades. How exactly did he get on the review? Was it, again, affirmative action?)
4 – He was elected editor of the Harvard Law Review. I will admit he appears to be pretty good at winning elections. Not sure if being a good candidate is an actual “qaulification” such as we are discussing here.
5 – he was a politician in “wily” Chicago. That is true, but please point to anything he did as a State Senator that serves as a “qaulification”. What big ideas did he push? What big legislation did he author and get enacted? What did he actually do?
6 – he won the primary. Again, I admit that this is impressive. But, if we are treating winning campaigns as, in itself, being a “qaulification” to be president, McCain has won many more than Obama and many more important campaigns (# of times for U.S. Senate).
Obama does not have any experience in self-sacrafice, in the military, in business. His record does not demonstrate any political courage or big ideas. If you are truly claiming “good grades”, graduating from a “good school” and winning a state election are grand qualifications and/or experience to be president, then I truly am baffled.
Now, if you say that you don’t care about qualifications and/or experience, that you want someone who you agree with politically – that I can understand and respect. Indeed, I think most people don’t base their vote on “qualificaitons” or “experience” or else Bill Clinton would never have beat Bush I. Jimmy Carter would never have defeated Ford. JFK would never have defeated Nixon. Bush II would not have defeated Gore.
Now, if both candidates had pretty much the exact same views and philosophy, then “experience” and “qualifications” would probably be the main issue. but, they don’t – which is really the whole point of elections.
But, to consistently claim that Obama has as much or more “experience” or “qualificaitons” as McCain is simply not credible. And, again, I dont’ really think that matters. I just don’t understand the knee-jerk reaction to claim that Obama has some great experience that will make him a great president. It just doesn’t strike me as factually credible. Now, that isn’t to say that he might surprise all of us on the right and end up being a great president (I, of course, would be very surprised), but I just find it hard to believe that anyone could look at his resume and jump to that conclusion.

Many Africans came to America in a chained heap of human flesh. They were subsequently chained to a plow and treated and traded like farm animals. Only after many decades after the civil war had passed, a war that threatened our country’s existence like no other, were African-Americans granted and afforded full legal rights as all other American citizens had been granted before them.
That is a scar on our nation that only time, trust and forgiveness can heal. It is a scar like none other. No matter who says what, Lisa, every good American is sorry for the past transgressions of the few who perpetrated that crime against humanity in the name of this country. I will not fingers or blame others. This country owes and gives a great deal of sympathy and thought to slavery all the horrible repercussions of slavery.
Never again, in our name. To understand and recognize the greatest of all sacrifices that this particular group of immigrants gave to America, and all their talents since witnessed, I, for one, am glad as many African-Americans can now refer to themselves Americans with a pride like no other group can. Africans gave and sacrificed more as a group. Period. They should have never had to.

I am so mad at his “O” ness that I don’t know what to do. Just imagine, this Negro has had a race card all along and keeping it to himself. Please, please, please, “O” man, if you have a race card could you tell the field where to get one? I could really use that bitch.
Now stop being selfish. I know you used yours to get into Columbia, and to Harvard Law. And, you used it to become Editor of the Law Review no less. But you didn’t stop there; you got into the exclusive club of 100 white men (otherwise known as the U.S. Senate), and now you want to use your card to become the leader of the free world. Wow! What a card you must have. What did Mr. Morton’s boy say? That you pulled it from the “bottom of the deck”? No wonder I couldn’t find that bitch.
Oh field stop it, you know you have played the race card a time or two. No, not that I know of. Although I am quite sure that the race card has been played against me. But don’t get me wrong, if I had one to use like his “O” ness, I would be playing that bad boy from the top of the deck, not the bottom. You think an Amex black card is the shit, wait until you see how much clout my race card would have.
Mr. Field, this is the bank, your mortgage is due. Ahhhh did you know that I was black? No sir we did not. Well I happen to have a race card right here, and I was planning on using it. Is that going to be necessary? No Mr. Field, that’s fine. We will let the mortgage slide for this month, you just hold on to that card: Sir, did you know that you were doing 100 MPH in a 35 MPH zone? May I see your driver’s license sir? No officer, but I do have a race card. Ahhh, never mind, just be careful next time. You have a nice day now. Thank you officer, you do the same…..You gotta love it.
The possibilities would be endless. But I guess I will never get one of those race cards because I just wouldn’t know where to apply for one. White folks keep shit like that from us black folks. They can only afford to let a few of those cards get out there. Jessie got one, and so did Al. Now I hear that his “O” ness got one too. I knew I couldn’t trust that Negro.
Hee hee.

They should have never had to
Agreed. We can sit here all day and go over all the historical tragedies and evil deeds and say “it should not have been so!”
But it was HISTORY. There comes a point when it is interesting to note it, but not to take it personally or take it out personally on people who just look like slave owners (for slave merchants, those were people who looked like the slaves). And it is also less than honest not to study American slavery in its entirety and in context.
My family was brought here as slaves in 1697. I’m sure it was hell to be sold to work on a Virginia plantation, that the family was bound for over sixty years, but I can’t think of any other country I, now in 2008, I would rather live in.
Comment by Mr. Pink on 8/1 @ 7:57 am #
To understand and recognize the greatest of all sacrifices that this particular group of immigrants gave to America
To be technical they did not sacrifice, they were persecuted. I would personally say there is a huge difference because when you sacrifice you do it for a reason knowing full well what will happen to you.
“That is a scar on our nation that only time, trust and forgiveness can heal. It is a scar like none other.”
Sorry to burst your bubble but pretty much every country in the planet has had legalized slavery at one time or another. We are not special. I am sure if you go far enough in my ancestory you can find some cannibals or murderers but I do not think I should have to sit and “feel” guilty about something I did not do.
Comment by Great Banana on 8/1 @ 7:58 am #
That is a scar on our nation that only time, trust and forgiveness can heal. It is a scar like none other. No matter who says what, Lisa, every good American is sorry for the past transgressions of the few who perpetrated that crime against humanity in the name of this country.
Am I sorry that the past happened? Do I think slavery was wrong? Yes. Do I bear any blame for it whatsoever? No. do I feel guilt? No. Do I think we owe an apology to every black person living in america today? No.
Sorry, but that is emo b.s. Christian were enslaved by the romans. Where’s my apology? the irish were shit upon for years in america. Where’s my apology.
Some of my ancestors died fighting for the North in the civil war to free slaves. Where’s the gratitude from the black community to me?
This is a b.s. political issue trumped up to try and perform the greatest wealth re-distribution ever attempted by man. It is cover for the most leftist, socialist/marxist policy ideas that can be imagined. it is nothing more. Plus, when we have the offial apology, will that be it? Can we finally “move on” and stop this ludicrous racial spolis system? Will the left stop claiming that everything said or done by the right is racist or “racist code”? Ha!!
That is why there is anger. It is a huge snow-job. If the Congress was simply going to issue a resolution apologizing to the people who were enslaved (without claiming that it was different or worse then other peoples/nations engaged/engage in [including the very africans who captured and sold their fellow africans in the first instance]), then there would be no anger.
but, that is not the case. This is political theater, and is meant to push incredibly bad policies. And, it will not be the end of the racial grievance/spoils system. So, I frankly look at it as total and utter b.s.
Moreover, most blacks in america do not come from a slave background. thus, it is a lie built on a lie. They are trying to sell the idea is that every black living in america today had an ancestor who was a slave in america in the past. That is simply not honest.
I’m frankly sick of hearing about slavery. America has apologized for it through blood, through amending the constitution, through passing many (unconstitutional) affirmative action laws, through passing many anti-discrimination laws and enforcing those.
Blacks in america have more opportunity and live better than anywhere else on the planet – even african countries. Even poor blacks in america have more and live better lifestyles than the vast majority of africans in africa.
So, yes, I am angry about the constant attempt to guilt me into accepting marxism/socialism as atonement for the sins of my past. Sins that I and nobody from my family ever engaged in. Sins that have been washed clean by blood and action.
The point is that it will never be enough. Each time the victim/racial/grievance spoils lobby will come forward with their hand out asking for more. Each time they will call me a racist and claim that I owe them something for the sins of the past.
Well, I don’t owe anyone anything. I don’t owe any black person an apology, I don’t owe any black person a dime of my hard-earned money. Don’t tell me I do.

Well if we wanna get back to topic, Obama’s continued insinuation that teh Evil Reich Wing will say “look at the black man, do not vote for him because he is black” is pretty disgusting and stupid.
1. Why would a racist need it to be pointed out to them that Obama was black? Is there a sizable portion of the white supremist voting block that is blind?
2. Insinuating 50% of Americans (which is just a ball park figure of the people that are Republicans) are racist, disgusts me as an American. Saying we are being “scared” if we do not vote for him is also insulting to my intelligence.
Comment by Pablo on 8/1 @ 8:07 am #
Am I sorry that the past happened? Well, no. Not really. I wasn’t there and I didn’t do it, nor did any of my ancestors. Am I apologetic towards black folks due to slavery? No. They weren’t slaves and I wouldn’t have owned them if they were. Their great-grandaddies weren’t slaves either. I have nothing to regret and you have no damages to seek reparations for. It’s the 21st freaking century, people. Focus!

Um, those things are just a tiny bit different than a Congressional resolution apologizing for a practice that was abolished 140 years ago. Let’s keep with apples to apples comparisons.
To tell you the truth, I’d have no problem with a, if it hasn’t already been done, formalized Congressional resolution apologizing for slavery. I really wouldn’t. They invent new racisms daily for this, but that’s usually microtargeting for specific thingers… when they need a centerpiece for their marxist banquet table, it’s always slavery slavery slavery. Ohhh. I guess I am not a citizen of the nation. I guess when my nation does something, it does not involve me. I’m glad I got your opinion on what my citizenship is worth and my place in my country. Please, tell me what else I should not have an opinion about that my government does? Let me know so I can make sure to shut up.
Again, you are not owed an apology Lisa, get over it and stop calling those of use who disagree with you as racist and “disappointing” you.
It is time for you to get over race. It is time for black america to stop obsessing about it. That is what will resolve the issue – when black america stands up to evil men like Sharpton and Jackson and tell them enough – you don’t speak for us.
Like I said – if it was an honest apology – pointing out that histoically america engaged in slavery the same as most european and african countries were engaging in it at the time, and that it was wrong, I would be fine with that.
Why can’t they do that instead of packing the “apology” with lies?
Also, once the apology is done, can we stop with the constant claims of racism? Can we move away from racial spoils? Will the Jacksons and Sharptons of the world go away? Will I get my apology for the shit the Irish took? Will the black community thank me for my family members dying to free them?
It’s all nonsense.
Comment by SarahW on 8/1 @ 8:18 am #
Lisa, I think this is Darleen’s point, though she is perfectly capable of speaking for herself, but It is just flat wrong to say Republicans are campaiging with devious references to how by the way, Obama is Black. If “race card” is a tired word, what would you have me use for dishonesty like that?
Obama wants me very much to know that he is black, and to accept that this is a point being made against him by his political opponents. Fark that. He may be racist, or hang out with racists, or cultivate relationships with racists when it is to his advantage. Maybe in that way race is an issue. But I can’t think of anyone but that horrible incontinence paraphiliac, David Brown, who stumbled in here this past week, who thinks about Obama’s race the way Obama implies his opponents do (and that one guy is as far from a Republican sensibility as you are likely to get.)

Comment by BJTex on 8/1 @ 8:21 am #
Lisa, who is the NATION? It’s you and me. That resolution is crap because of it’s ridiculous wording but, more so, it apologizes in my name. We are the nation. I’m not angry about it but as the grandson of immigrants I’m a little annoyed at the way the concept is being presented.
Come now, Lisa. No one is offering that as a position and it’s not as if we don’t highlight both slavery and the holocaust frequently and well. I’m OK with that and I fully embrace such a position. My only concern is applying the argument of uniqueness (i.e the holocaust is unique to Nazi Germany like African slavery is unique to America) as an artificial prod to further national guilt. While there are unique aspects of the American experience with slavery it’s institution is not unique to America. Thus to suggest that any of us want to sweep this under the carpet and not examine history is false. In fact, I’d like to see a discussion that accurately reflects American slavery in the context of the historical record of slavery in general.
Our politicians are not up to the task when it comes to this apologizing thing. They are more concerned with burnishing their racial bona fides with a small group of victimization junkies than with estblishing a reasonable, accurate historical record.
Again, I’m not angry about it but feel as though I have the prudent right to question content and intent without being told that it’s a no brainer and why do I hate teh black people.
Still love ya, girl!

No. Not really. Baracky only half plays the race card. Mostly it’s about hey I’m special and different and not like the others. His race does make him special as far as candidates go, but when he’s the one that puts it forward it really a lot calls attention to how he has a huge specialness deficit in what he brings to the job. McCain says hey, it’s not a race thing to attack your faux specialness. Stop using race as camouflage for your vacuity and callowness. You are right on this point. I assert he and any other person should have an operating philosophy that America is either ready for a black candidate to win on the merit of his ideas, tract record and character, or not, and let the chips fall. Coupla questions, not that either matter.
1. By what authority would a people vote a guy into office on the basis of his anticipated racial policies? No, before the moonbats present blow a gasket, I don’t mean a mere, raw election, but by what constitutional authority would a people, using emotion, myth, envy, competition, intolerance, and greed, among other avarice, insist that an individual, one clearly not empowered to do so by any authentic mandate of the office under the original and clear strictures of the republic, perform politically-aligned, morally-tinged tasks (probably by way of the color of his skin, just as this ass is already today as self-appointed emissary to the planet) in order to serve a specific yet vague ideal, one visibly no more honest in it’s intended effect than it will be just in its principle?
2. Given the trajectory of said anticipated social engineering, social manipulation, and socialism throughout history, by what logic would any idiot think such wishfulness and legislated strife could possibly produce a beneficial outcome?
IOW, no right to do such a thing, and no practical cause to justify trying. Is this somehow a mystery? Have we become a nation of selfish, envious, mewling children?
So why do leftists routinely do such insanely stupid shit like this, directly in the face of their having no fundamental right to do so, no moral right to do so, and no practical benefit of having done so?
Which they will, ignoring human nature and history, all functional thought aside. Carry on. Nothing to explain here.

Oh, and the self evident answer to #129 (thanks; I’m here all week).
Because of the religion of leftism. Yes, religion. Faith, hope, mandated “love”, the myth of equality (not under the law; inherent, born-into-it equality of behavior and treatment) hierarchy, dogma, subscription, organization, cant, rhetoric, rules, law, enforcement, force, speech, faith in things not seen (or proved, ever) and even excommunication.
Religion. You know, leftists, that thing the separation clause prevents. Well, the invented, opportunistic, variable, partisan, extra-constitutional, intolerant separation clause as regards what it prevents — behaviorally and even mentally — in others.
You know, typically because of simple congressional majorities with single-digit approval ratings. Because of the living constitution or something.

Here is what I posted in yesterday’s thread:
Darleen, KtK is merely engaging in intellectual thuggery. The charge of racism is used today; back in the 1950’s it would have been a cry of “And you sir, are a Communist!â€Â.
Social ostracism is supposed to follow the charge, no matter how baseless it is, with the accused vainly offering a defense. It is the tactic of a scoundrel with nothing left in his intellectual quiver. I think KtK may be learning that the old charge is losing its sting, and the ostracism isn’t as forthcoming as it once was.
Remove KtK and put in Sen. Obama. It is still the same cheap bit of McCarthyism that the left purports to deplore, yet uses without hesitation.

As always, I welcome Obama to cut me a fuckin’ check for his ancestors’ enslavement of mine — and his and his family’s resultant fraudulent advantage over me and mine — or Whitey can shut the fuck up. Whichever.
There is no “nation” to “regret” its “tragic” blah. There is only us. Unfortunately, One of us is trying to drag the rest into the lie that is his life, to make it real, finally — by incredible force. Even cultural giant Vanilla Ice couldn’t pull that off. As the cheat becomes more blatant, it’s bound to make a few us straight players a bit pissy.
For the sake of this point — Brazil or the Netherlands. They swapped way the hell more slaves for gold than anyone else did, and no one gives a damn. Almost no one even knows. The “Western” side of the African trade was theirs, but it’s the U.S. and Britain who take — give themselves — all the shit. That’s pimpin’.

The African experience in the West, as the academics call it, is unique. Not only should blacks learn from the “black experience,” so should whites, latinos, asians, even the lowly blubber eating Inuit.
And if African-Americans have an extra twinkle in their eye when they witness Barack Obama being sworn in as President of the United States of America, just understand that their extra twinkle of pride didn’t come on the cheap. America makes everyone eat a shit sandwich; they got a foot-long Subway with extra shit. Comment by Ric Locke on 8/1 @ 9:28 am #
Hysterical? Nah. Intentionalism, remember?
The problem with an apology for slavery, even past the hysterical (!) overstatement of the existing resolution, is that there is no way in Hell it can go back far enough. Slavery goes back to the earliest forms of human organization; it is a necessary, even inevitable, concomitant of an agricultural economy — if you don’t have machines you get slavery, or one of the euphemisms for it like serfdom, because there’s no way to get sufficient production to provide everybody with an independent lifestyle.
The trade routes and economic arrangements by which my ancestors brought Lisa’s to this country were established by the Romans two millenia before anybody in Eurasia knew there was an American continent. The Roman Empire developed them into something like what we have today for cars or other industrial products, with producers, agents, transporters, jobbers, and dealers, and made the system so pervasive that we have, today, an entire ethnic group whose identifying name is Slav(e). There are unique factors about the American (and British) practices, but having people bought and sold like agricultural machinery is not among them — that’s the constant, and very nearly the definition, of slavery throughout history. Any representation that that is not the case is so utterly fraudulent as to cast doubt on any other statement(s) by the same people.
The truly unique thing about modern slavery is that it no longer exists in any Western or Western-derived society. That is absolutely a new thing, a complete departure from one of the fundamental bases of society throughout the ages, and it’s only been around for a century and a half, not nearly enough time for a full adjustment of society|ies to the New Regime.
The unique thing about American slavery is its direct correlation with race, and the thing that makes its sequelae problematic is the unfortunate observation that American blacks do not, in their masses, achieve. We are desperately flailing about for an explanation for that fact, and don’t seem to me to be any closer to such an explanation than we were in, say, the Fifties — if anything we are farther away. “The legacy of slavery” is an attractive explanation because it’s simple and seemingly fairly obvious, but it’s not really “simple”; the correct word is “simplistic”. Placing all the blame|cause for a complex social phenomenon on a single influence is easy, and we all ought to be profoundly suspicious of simple explanations. At best they tend to be incomplete, and they are quite often completely wrong.
More later, perhaps.
Regards,
Ric

I think Great Banana pretty well summed up what over half of all white Americans (and other non-blacks) think, if only to themselves.. The rest, a minority, appear to be guilty liberals comfortable with the idea of perpetual apology for something they never had a hand in.. If O!, the Great Uniter, really wants to move this country forward then along with acknowledging that slavery was bad and wrong (by our 21st century standards) he, at the same time, acknowledges that no living black American has ever been a slave and no living white American has ever owned or traded in African slaves.. He could also state flat out that in light of the huge amounts of money spent on affirmative action over the last century and a half we’re now even steven on the whole reparations issue and going forward we will all, regardless of race, ethnicity or gender, be be treated and protected the same under the law, and be valued each as to their own merit, capabilities and achievement.. And finally put an end to institutionalized, government backed racism in this country once and for all.

Comment by Jeff G. on 8/1 @ 9:31 am #
First, I thought the “nation” was responsible for doing away with slavery, too. So that means the nation owes the nation an apology. Kinda cancels things out — but what the hell: as a representative of the nation I both offer and accept my own apology.
Then, there’s thor’s whole twaddle about extra twinkles. As if a certain skin color is what makes “ancestors.” Meanwhile, the only reason the “black experience” is still separate from a more generic American experience is that it is purposely bracketed off in such a way that keeps it its own separate experience — and so keeps alive the requirement that we know and understand that experience.
Personally, I see the US culturally as capable of swallowing all of that ethnic outsiderism up into its giant maw: thus, there is no “black experience” outside of the “experience of blacks within the US,” which makes the “black experience” part of the American experience.
And I’ve had plenty of those kinds of experiences. I feel no compulsion to ride every ride. Some of just don’t like rollercoasters.

Uh, Thor -
“No matter who says what, Lisa, every good American is sorry for the past transgressions of the few who perpetrated that crime against humanity in the name of this country.”
You do know that every culture on the planet has a history of slave owning and trading, right? Why is it the only western nation that fought a bloody civil war that contained “freeing the slaves” as one undeniable pivot point can never seem to embrace the victory and look forward for one f*cking day, instead of supporting a frankly sad and shameful industry of race pimps and grievance grifters? That the trade still thrives in places like the Sudan, and could be said to be the basis of the service industry across much of the mideast, and fails to incite the same outrage from all the tired old players in the game.
What bullshit you spout – “the few” – with such an earnest attempt to project compassion and reverence. Race prejudice was an accepted societal norm across western societies until the beginnings of the abolitionist movements (which began primarily in England) and such prejudices were still widespread in business and government practices until the civil rights reform corrected the most egregious of the discriminatory practices and laws.
We have come a long way. The progress has come at a fearsome price, paid by many millions of our ancestors across all the color and culture lines.
But I never owned any fucking slaves. Nobody you know ever owned any – unless you have Saudi emigre friends who import Paks or Filippinas for years at a time. My Scandanavian and Italian antecedents got here in the 1870’s, and my Sioux ancestors… well, their experience is another chapter for another time.
The debt is paid. It was paid for at places like Antietam and Fredericksburg and Selma and Memphis. Pay respect to the memory of those that went before, resolve to go forward in good faith and work toward ending the last vestiges of racism in our society. The goal now should be ending race based affirmative action and all other government actions that serve to segregate and separate us by color or ethnicity.

As a Chicagoan, I can guarantee that Obama is an empty-suit Chicago politician. Obama’s role as a “community organizer” (give me an effin’ break) was to get elected and help get the vote out to get his cronies elected. The entire Chicago political structure is built on those two activities. Obama owes his entire political success to Emil Jones, who greased his way through the Chicago Democratic Machine and by a fluky win in the Senate race that he would have lost except for his opponent’s scandal. He has not done a single thing legislatively or for his constituency to be considered for the highest office. He’s a fluke and a symbol of how morally bankrupt the Democratic party is right now.

Oh you crazy white people. I still love you though, even the wildly insane Jhoward. I have some meetings (I am applying for a race card – hee hee).
As always, I love the conversations here, they clear the sinuses. But alas, it is the weekend. I am going from Comcast to FioS so I won’t be able to get online for however long Verizon jerks me around – however: As your Official Spokesperson for Teh Blacks, I say this profound thing:
Have a nice weekend!

This post set me thinking about contrived moments. I wonder if any MSM outlet will take a hard look at Pfleger jumping under the bus so that O! could quit that church. Clearly he had to leave, if he just quit he would have looked very weak, if a black preacher gave the “get out of church” sermon he would have completely alienated his base. I’d love to know if he and Pfleger explicitly contrived that, or if Pfleger saved O’s campaign on his own. And now of course any mention of that church, Jeremiah Wright, Black Liberation Theology etc. is old news, gutter politics, and rascist.

- Problem is the race card is going the way of Lava lamps and pocket protectors, and the Black American community is seeing how they’ve been used as vote cattle by the Dembulbs all these years.
- When the race card is finally put out to pasture the Left will deflate like a week old party balloon.

The Left needs racism so that they can always be heard taking the brave noble stand of being against racism. It’s not in their interest to have the racial divide close. Thus where it does not exist, it must be invented. And in almost every case where they invent it they’re so f’n lacking in self-awareness that they fail to see the projection of their own putrid, gutter level race-based assumptions and stereotypes. I’ve mentioned before a white coworker who thought he was so “down” that he had no qualms about calling J.C. Watts an Uncle Tom. When I asked him if he thought that because Watts didn’t conform to the way he demanded black people collectively as a race are supposed to think, he got huffy and left the room.

i’m voting for obama, that said, i voted for mccain in 2000. mccain lost my ‘08 vote when he (and the other two) folded like a house of cards on the eve, literally, of the senate campaign season 2006. torture:brought to you by the family values party. i cried for three days–my sister calls me “a bleeding heart liberal”, sounds about right–but i felt such despair at the cynicism* and the shameful vote that resulted. as i watch the campaign i see mccain tossing any number of his “principled positions” under the bus.
does anyone seriously doubt obama’s words? isn’t he speaking the truth? there have been racially tinged no, neon colored (!), comments all over the web ever since obama threw his hat into the ring. attempting to scare people away from this risky barrack HUSSEIN osama is exactly what they’re doing! does anyone believe they aren’t? i don’t think, and obama didn’t say, that these efforts are necessarily coming from mccains campaign, but isn’t that exactly what’s happening?
obama hasn’t ” played the race card”, it’s BEEN played! eak.

i’m new to this blogging business (and old, to boot) but is name calling and ridicule (of any voice other than your own) part of the protocol?
i have a question, now that i’m on a mostly republican and christian site, can any one explain to me how the republicans get to call themselves the”family values party”? and since when did the “religious right” become our (apparent) moral arbitters. is it just because they called ‘first dibs’? is it because they’ve repeated it so often that they get to keep it? i just don’t see it.
i don’t see family values OR morality evidenced by the republican party except on two issues 1)abortion … one issue.
one last question, when did capitalism become a christian value?
o.k., i’m done. i hope someone answers these questions, they’ve been on my mind for awhile now. eak.

Elaine,
To answer some of your points:
Name calling and ridicule are permissible if, like hoot, you indulge in drive-by trolling. Flinging poo like some zoo monkey will get you nowhere.
Many, if not most of the posters here, seem indeed to “seriously doubt obama’s words”. I know I do – I think he’s nothing but a slick machine pol that’s all mouth and no trousers. Your mileage obviously varies.
I have no idea where you are going with your straw man on the religious right and the Republican party being the family values party
Comment by thor on 8/2 @ 12:13 pm #
Hairwhoa, Reff.
Not to be always the pest, but, fuck it, why not.
Prior to your code-speak in post #189 I posted dates in 1870 and 1947 in my #183 posting. In 1870 blacks were given the right to vote and in 1947 Jackie Robinson made his debut in MLB. In my heart I figured the connection to that historic baseball date would channel my code-speak directly to your antennae and you might reply, which you did, but obviously oblivious to my code-to-code mating call. We were close. (Testing 1,2,3 – an image of a cigar is in my head, did you see one too?)
If the American experience is a prejudicial one, wherein you have suffered a share of this great societal prejudice, which I don’t doubt, why are you not recognizing the great take away? I refer to the Jim Crow laws (I know you know where I’m going). What we gaveth the Negroish on papereth we yankeed awayeth in realitius. Love Negro long time we did not. Boom Boom Negro long time we did, emphasis on “long time.”
About the time blacks were told they could vote Goldman Sachs was breaking down the no-Jews-allowed wall on Wall Street in 1869. Similar dates, yes, equal in any other level or any other respect, No Fricking Way. Jews were not sold on the auction block by the pound. And Jews were allowed to hit a ball with a wooden stick in Yankee stadium long before Jackie stole home. I’m groupifying for reality’s sake.
I don’t generalize to mollify. When I said “unique” I meant unique.
